Will You Be the Mommy?
Stand By YouYoochun sat idly as he watched Junsu chase the ball with some kids from the orphanage. He and Changmin were sitting on a mat under the tree in the middle of the yard where kids came to play before supper. Yoochun couldn’t help but smile at how adept Junsu was with the ball even at his young age.
“Look at me Chunnie! Look at me!” Junsu shouted at him as he ran past the two kicking the ball with all his might. Yoochun waved at the younger boy as he quickly grabbed the leaf that baby Changmin was shoving up his mouth.
Keeping an eye on his little brother, Yoochun began to ponder the situation they were in. He knew that something bad must have happened at work for his hyung to have spanked him like that. Yunho rarely lost his temper with him let alone Changmin. Sighing deeply, Yoochun got a hold of Changmin and hugged the baby boy trying to will away the feeling of emptiness in his heart. It was times that like this that he missed their mom the most.
Burying his face deeply against Changmin’s chest, Yoochun felt hot tears escape from his lids. Changmin began to squirm uncomfortably trying to push Yoochun away. Yoochun afraid that the other kids would for crying, he pulled Changmin closer. Unfortunately the baby didn’t like what was happening and started to cry. Suddenly, a pair of chubby arms got a hold of Changmin shushing the little babe.
“Don’t cry Minnie. It’s okay.” Junsu said patting the little boy’s back who looked at his older brother, eyebrows furrowed and lower lip jutted in a pout. “Chunnie didn’t mean to make you cry baby.” He said soothingly. Yoochun quickly brushed his eyes dry hoping that Junsu didn’t notice he was crying.
Looking up from where he was sitting with Changmin, Junsu looked at Yoochun, head tilted to one side as he looked at the older boy inquiringly. “Why are you sad Chunnie?” He asked softly.
Yoochun leaned back on the tree trunk behind him, pulled his knees up to his chest and with a look on his face that was far beyond his age said, “I just... I just miss my eomma.” He answered brokenly.
Junsu got up and sat beside his Yoochun and put his head on the older boy’s shoulder patting his friend on the knee. “It’s okay Chunnie. She’s with my mommy in heaven. They’re friends too you know.” He said trying to console his best friend.
Yoochun couldn’t help but smile a little at the little boy’s words. Junsu, who was five, was only about two years younger than he was but more often than not, Junsu would be the one who ended up making Yoochun feel better.
“Thanks Junsu.” Yoochun said patting the little boy on the head.
Junsu looked up his face, his face lighting up with a grin when he saw his best friend smile. “You don’t have to miss your mom too much Chunnie. Jaejoong hyung can be your eomma.” He said squishing Yoochun’s cheeks between his chubby hands.
Laughing as he grabbed Junsu’s hands from his face, “Is Yunho hyung your appa then?” He asked.
“Ne.” The little boy nodded solemnly.
Yoochun laughed as he noticed Changmin crawling away from the mat. Jumping up, he quickly rushed over to his brother who was apparently making his way towards Jaejoong who was fetching them to get ready for supper.
“What are you boys up to?” Jae said with a smile as he picked up baby Changmin and reached over to ruffle Yoochun’s hair making sure he carefully avoided the bump on his forehead.
“Joongie hyung!” Junsu said running towards his older brother. “Can you be Chunnie and Minnie’s eomma?” He asked excitedly.
Laughing at his little brother as he covered his mouth, “What makes you ask that Susu?” Jaejoong asked calling his little brother by his favourite nickname.
“So that Yunho hyung can be my appa.” Little Junsu answered seriously.
Smiling at his little brother, he grabbed Junsu’s hand as he carried Changmin on the other. “Su, we’re not eomma and appa, we’re your hyungs.” He explained patiently.
“But... but...” Junsu said trying to keep up with everyone as they walked, walking as fast as his little legs would carry him. “But, we’re a family.” He finally said.
Jae didn’t answer but instead looked at Yoochun who looked at him inquiringly.
“Well, yes. I mean, we are a family Su. But... we... uh...” Jae trailed off not know what to say for in truth, he did see their little bunch as a family of sorts.
“I... I think you’re like an eomma, hyung.” Yoochun said silently then stopping and dropping his chin to his chest, afraid that he might have offended the older boy.
“Oh.” Was all Jaejoong could reply as he stopped looking at Yoochun.
“See! See!” Junsu squeaked. “You could be the eomma and Yunho hyung could be the appa!” Junsu said happily as he skipped around Jaejoong’s legs as Changmin squirmed around trying to grab at the little boy below him laughing and squealing at his antics.
Jaejoong tightly gripped Changmin to avoid him from falling over. He knew that Yoochun’s revelation shouldn’t be taken lightly as the boy rarely ever shared his feelings about any subject.
“Do... do you really think I’m an eomma to you Chunnie?” Jae asked gently.
Yoochun slowly looked up and then nodded slightly before answering softly, “I mean... you... you remind me of my mom sometimes.” He said almost in a whisper.
Jae exhaled slowly his heart being tugged by the rawness of Yoochun’s feelings. Approaching the younger boy, Jae cupped Yoochun’s face and tilted up it so he can look into his eyes, “Then I am honoured.” He said.
Yoochun felt his tension drain away. He was so afraid that Jae might get mad for being compared to a woman but he was happy that the older boy didn’t feel offended. Smiling shyly at Jaejoong, Yoochun bowed politely at Jae and simply said, “Thank you hyung.”
Jae smiled as Junsu ran over to hug the now smiling Yoochun. “See Chunnie! We’re now a real family!” He said happily. “Now, we just need Yunho hyung to be our appa.”
Jae suddenly bit his inner lip at his brother’s last statement. It was one thing to allow Yoochun to let him be seen as an eomma, it was another thing for his little brother to ask Yunho to be his appa.
“Susu, I don’t think that’s good idea.” Jae ventured slowly.
Junsu looked up at his hyung, head tilted to the side and said, “Why not hyungie?” He asked innocently.
“Well...” Jae started unsure of what to say.
“We could ask him politely.” Yoochun suddenly said shyly.
Junsu nodded his head somberly. “Yes, yes. We will ask him politely hyungie, we promise.” His little head shaking as he looked at his older brother.
Jae shook his head. He wasn’t sure how to properly explain to the two younger boys that two guys can’t be considered eomma and appa. “It’s just not the way things are done boys.” He said gently.
Junsu’s eyebrows furrowed in deep confusion. “Why not hyungie?” He asked seriously.
Jae bit his inner lip again wishing for a moment that he wasn’t so open to Yoochun’s feelings. But then he quickly quashed that feeling for it was a gift for Yoochun to open up to anyone that way. “It’s just the way it is, love.” He said again.
“But, we’re a family right, hyung?” Yoochun asked, his face also started to get confused.
“Uh, well, yes.” Jae answered.
“So, why can’t Yunho hyung be the appa if you’re our eomma?” He asked.
“Ah... well...” Jae stammered wishing the bell for supper would sound soon.
“Don’t worry hyung, we’ll ask Yunho hyung properly after dinner.” Yoochun said decisively thinking that maybe Jae felt that Yunho might reject the idea if they were too forward about asking.
Junsu nodded his head again as he pulled Yoochun into their dorm room saying, “Come on Chunnie, let’s wash up really quick so we can get ready and ask Yunho hyung before dinner.”
“Okay!” Yoochun said happily, turning to bow first in front of Jae and saying, “We’ll go get cleaned up eomma.” He said with a mischievous grin at the older boy who couldn’t help but smile as he looked at the two younger boys run into the room.
“Ah, what am I going to do with those two, huh, Minnie?” Asked Jaejoong looking at the cute little baby in the eyes.
Changmin chortled with his cute baby laugh as he blew a raspberry at Jae squeezing his cheeks between his little baby hands. “Ma!” He suddenly said just as Yunho entered the room looking at them in surprise.
