Chopsticks

Anew

Kris leaned quietly against the backwall, scanning through Seohyun's playlist amidst her elegent piano playing in the background. Just like her piano playing, her music held quite the reflection. Slow, mellow, and captivating. Yes, they were mostly ballads; and if anything, fit the winter season perfectly.

But well, almost too perfectly in his opinion.

Kris knocked lightly against one of the piano legs closest to him, making Seohyun turn away from her piano playing. "You pick", he swivelled her phone in his palm for her to retrieve, but was immediately rejected. "It's a duet, we decide together."

He sat there a moment, with her phone still in hand. "Ofcourse", he retracted his arm, and plugged in his earphones while scanning through them once more. This time, actually listening to them. But before doing so, he snuck a glance at Seohyun and shook his head. "She's so stubborn."

Seohyun on the other hand, couldn't help but turn to the piano for comfort. Her hands always felt so restless when she was bothered with something. It was to the point where she needed to distract them with something. "I'm glad he didn't ask about it", she sighed in relief. Although she had just told him they needed to decide together, it was as if she had been completely ignoring him for the last 45 minutes. Well, she couldn't help it. After that phone call, she couldn't help but wonder.

The uneasiness between his breaths were just almost audible, while his voice, though still deep and familiar, was no longer calm. There was a sense of urgency in his voice, which seemed to fall almost immediately when Seohyun's voice was heard across the other line. Was he expecting someone?

"Is this how you play?"

She shrieked a bit as she felt Kris leaning in behind her, while playing with two of his fore fingers against the keys. She could still feel her heart beat against her chest, and rose her voice in a fright. "Please don't scare me like that!"

"Did I?" She could hear a smirk roll down his words, as he continued to press one key after another. "You were the one spacing out."

She noticed his face leaning in on her right, now facing her directly. She couldn't help but gulp, and shift to her left. "A-are you playing chopsticks?"

He shrugged. "The only song I know how to play."

She smiled as she watched him play. "Continue from there."

He looked at her questioningly, but obediently obeyed. She continued to keep an eye on his fingers, and soon joined in, startling him a bit. "Just repeat the sequence", her eyes told him. He nodded, and soon found them to be in a slight mouse chase. It sounded almost exhilirating, and a bit of a nerve wreck, as if he was being chased. It was a simple song his mom taught him when he was younger. Yet, he didn't realize how thunderous it could sound.

Seohyun soon darted against the keys, almost as if she was down to chase him. He however, continued at his normal pace, with his repeated sequence being unbroken. Strangely enough, although he continued to play the same keys over and over, they seemed to become louder and more intense. It was almost as if the story of the little mouse chase they were playing had reached it's . Will the mouse get it's cheese?

They both found themselves enjoying the little spectacle of the little story they had set up for themselves, and were soon captivated in their own little world. It was strange how a simple song turned duet could be so captivating, yet exhilirating enough to make their hearts skip a beat. And they definitely weren't complaining.

Kris reminisced of the time his mom taught him this piece. Come to think of it, it was before his dad had left. When they were together at a little piano shop beside the hotel room they rented during their vacation. That's right, during the cold winter day, he continually cried until they visited that music shop. It seemed so long ago yet he could remember it like it was just yesterday. It was before all the madness happened. Before his mom's smiles turned almost forced and when she woke up from her sleep in tears. Before his mother's eyes seemed so swollen every passing day after his father had left and before-

He stopped wide-eyed as he made a deafening mistake to their duet, making their little story shatter into invisible shards.

Seohyun glanced over her right across his keys, and couldn't help but still have a smile plastered on her face. "Kris-sshi, that was fun-

Her smile immediately wore away at his expression, which seemed almost slightly afraid with a hint of guilt. Her gaze softened as his eyes stayed fixated onto his large hands, that stayed plastered. Was there something she should've done? She didn't know either.

"Kris-sshi?"

"So did you decide on a song?"

Seohyun instantly rose from her seat in a startle, and bowed. Kris soon followed her, as they greeted their senior. She hid her arms behind her back, rubbing her hands in embarrassment. Seeing Kris at that moment made her want to console him. But before she was even able to reach out for him... "Did sunbae-nim see that? So embarrassing..", she closed her eyes, trying to erase the memory.

"Did you?" KangTa turned from one to the other still waiting for a response.

Kris noticed Seohyun in her own world, and handed KangTa her phone. "This song sunbae."

Realizing Kris' action before her, she immediately opened her eyes to KangTa nodding in approval. "This is great Kris-ah. Good work Seohyun-ah. I think this will be perfect before the closing song. We start rehearsing tomorrow. I'm assuming you both are almost done with individual preparations with your groups?"

They both nodded in unison, with KangTa nodding in acknowledgement. "That's good. That's perfect timing. Then, i'll leave the rest of the preparations to the both of you. We will be starting dress rehearsals this coming Saturday." He checked the clock hung on the wall, and checked his watch. "I should get going."

Seohyun discreetly tugged Kris by his jacket sleeve, and casted him an angry stare. He immediately looked away, although he had already expected this much from her.

"I will see you both on Saturday. Take care going home", KangTa waved them goodbye as he exited the room, leaving an angry Seohyun behind.

"Kris-sshi! We were supposed to choose a song together! Why didn't-

"Well I couldn't help it with you spacing out so much."

"We-well..", she fidgeted a bit until she timidly gave in. "Sorry."

He smirked a bit as she looked down to her feet, guilt silently riding on her shoulders. Despite her usual promptness and almost stern personality, she could sometimes act like a little kid. He slid her phone into her hand, and gestured at the fourth one down. "I picked that one. It was the least sad among the 10."

"Sad..?" Her head rose at the remark, after Kris had rushed passed her and towards his phone set on the ground. "What do you mean-

"Be right back." He exited the room in a flash, with his last words almost inaudible. He slammed the door behind him, leaving Seohyun to jump a bit in her place. Again, the urgency in his voice was so clearly evident despite the inaudibility of his voice. She shifted a bit in her spot, gradually growing worried of him.

She sighed, until something seemed to flash from the corner of her eyes. She slowly crouched down, and reached for the sqaure sheet of neon green stuck against the floor. She flipped it over, and rose her eyebrows. "My note? Where did this-

"Ow!", she nursed the throbbing spot on her head, and winced uglily at the pain. She rolled over and rested her back against the hard, cold floor, while still nursing her head. She opened her eyes slowly from the pain, until the sight before her forced them completely open.

A colorful array of beautifully arranged post-its filled the underside of the piano. It was organised so precisely to form a mosaic of a rose. "Wow..", she couldn't help adore the spectacle before her. It was so artistic and beautiful. Moreover, the post-its that governed the little masterpiece were her's.

She immediately took out her phone, snapping a little picture of the sight before turning to admire it again. However, her little moment of admiration soon came to seize with the thundering of footsteps. "Oh no."

"What.. are you doing?"

Kris rose a brow as Seohyun laid flat on the floor. Seohyun immedately rose, while brushing away her clothes. "N-nothing, I just dropped something."

He nodded a bit amusingly, and pointed to her hair. "Your hair"

She looked at him questioningly, until she turned against the mirrored wall infront of her, completely embarrassed. Her hair was in such a hot mess from rolling around underneath that piano in addition to bumping her head against it. She sighed irritably as she tried to remove the hairpin from her tangled hair, which didn't seem to be moving.

Kris rubbed the back of his neck until he walked over and seized her by the hands. She looked at him across the mirror, as he stood behind her and set her hands down. "You owe me chocolate milk for a week."

Still not realizing what he meant, she winced a bit when he started untangling her hair. "Wait, Kris-sshi, that hurts!"

"Because you keep moving. Hold still."

Surprisingly enough, his hands were so gentle. She could make out the gentleness in his work as he slowly tugged her hair away from tangled knots, and as he slowly ran his fingers down her hair. She found herself blushing a bit at his small gesture, and yet, couldn't help but continually stare at him.

It was funny how thoroughly concentrated he looked. His lips slightly apart in concentration and his eye brows arched towards the middle as his gaze narrowed down at a particular angle. She giggled at the sight, until he rose to look at her. "What?"

"Nothing." She restrained from shaking her head but smiled. "You seem quite experienced that's all."

He stopped for a second before continuing. Her smile soon faded away as she noticed what she had just said. It was possible.. That Kris had done something like this before. Afterall, he was seemingly popular and he always had a way with his words that attracted a lot of people. Moreover, he didn't really talk much but he was still very caring and attentive.

It was all possible.. Yet, why did she feel so bothered?

"Hyung! We brought you some-

Chanyeol and D.O froze in the doorway before Kris and Seohyun had spotted them from the mirror. Seohyun immediately gasped and waved her hands in denial. "No, no it's not what you- Ow.." she nursed her head as she frantically turned back to face them, as she pulled away from a tangle Kris had been working on.

"It's not what you think." Kris repeated Seohyun's sentence to completion and turned to them rather expressionless. "Well atleast, that's what she wanted to say."
