            I checked my phone at the end of class.

88 new messages

Those little…

I skimmed through all the messages as I walked to the community center for my babysitting shift. Most of it was completely irrelevant (no surprise there), but at the very least it was entertaining. (And I would have to change Baekhyun’s name in my phone asap).

I got to the meeting room and wondered who would show up today. I suspected it wouldn’t be many because it was just me to watch them. However, when I got to the room I noticed the door was slightly propped open and I heard faint voices coming from inside.

“Bing, want the blue block?”

“Ya!”

“Here, this one was a “B” on it!”

“Appa!”

“YIXING!” I said as I burst through the door. The look on his face told me he obviously wasn’t expecting anyone to be here.

“Oh my god! Where have you been? Do you know how worried sick we’ve all been??! No texts, no calls, no nothing! You just disappear!” I said before I realized I was yelling. Bing was staring at me like I had gone mad but Yixing just sat on the floor with his head bent down, not meeting my eyes.

“Yixing I thought you had more sense than to pull a stunt like that.” I continued. “We were thinking only the worst possible scenarios. You know what Jongin asked? He thought you had gone back to China!”

“I didn’t go back.” Yixing mumbled.

“What?” I didn’t hear him.

He looked up for the first time and met my gaze. His normally soft, friendly brown eyes looked cold and were welling up with tears.

“I said I didn’t go back.” His voice cracked and he paused. “It came to me.”

“What on earth are you talking about?”

“She came back.”

“Who?”

“Meihua.” He said the name it was the most precious word that had ever passed his lips.

“Bing’s mother.” I said slowly, putting the pieces together.

Yixing nodded and pulled his son onto his lap. I sat down on the floor next to him.

“She came back.”

“For… for good?” I asked, but Yixing just shook his head and stared at Bing in his lap. He started to pet his son’s head as he cleared his throat.

“No. For… closure.” He picked his words carefully, as if he did’t want to have to say them. I guess saying them out loud just made them feel more true.

He didn’t continue, so I did the only thing I could think of doing. I grabbed his hand in mine and just held it. I rubbed his palm with my thumb as he closed his eyes and tried to piece his words together.

“Do you know how she left?” Yixing asked.

“No.”

“Just gone one day. Here today, gone tomorrow. I had seen it coming for a while, her parents were furious with her, but I thought she could stand up to them and stay.”

“She… couldn’t.” I finished. Yixing looked at me and nodded his head with a small, sad smile.

“It’s been two, almost three years since I had heard anything from her. Then, all of a sudden I get a call from an unknown number and it’s her. She was in Seoul and wanted to meet.”

“So you met her?”

“She’s married.”

“Hm?”

“She’s ing. Married.” Yixing cursed, something I had never heard, or even imagined, him saying before.

“Pregnant too. With her ‘real’ son.” Yixing spat. “That’s what she called it. Her real son.”

“Ouch…”

“Yea. Ouch.” Yixing chuckled a dry laugh. “So what does that make Bing? What did that make us? We were nothing to her. Just an experiment, a vacation from her real life.”

He was getting angrier and angrier as he spoke, so I stayed quiet.

“She told me the truth. She didn’t leave by force, she left on her own accord. She had had her adventure, had her fun. She was done. Ready to start her real life, the way she envisioned it.”

“And I’m guessing this real life… didn’t include you?” I asked as nicely as I could.

“I guess not.” Yixing shook his head and began to tear up. I scooted next to him and he leaned his forehead into my shoulder. Bing had begun to sense something was wrong, because he turned to lean into his dad’s chest and cry with him. Like father, like son; even if he didn’t understand why.

I took my free hand and began to Yixing’s hair, trying to comfort him the best I could. After a while, I knew what to say.

“Yixing, look at me.” I stated.

He picked his head up and looked at me with wet, sleepy eyes. He sniffled and rubbed his nose with the sleeve of his sweater.

“You’re better than this.” I said. “She doesn’t deserve your tears. You don’t deserve to be hurt be someone like this.”

“So what am I supposed to do?” Yixing asked. “I waited two years for her! I thought, for some stupid reason, that she would come back! I was stupid, ok? I was dumb enough to wait two years for someone who didn’t even care about her family! What does that make me, Yisoo? What? I’m an idiot. I waited like a fool for something that would never happen. And you know what? Deep down, I knew it would never happen. I knew but I just kept waiting. Because if I didn’t move on than I thought she would come back. I thought not thinking about it would stop it from happening. I was stupid.”

“Yea, you were.” I said.

“What?!”

“I’m agreeing with you!” I said. “You were stupid and blind. You should’ve seen it coming.”

Yixing had stopped crying and was now just looking at me like I had grown a second head.

“You were stupid.” I said again. “But you aren’t anymore. You’ve learned from this. As much as it . You’ve learned, and it’s going to make things better.”

“It’s going to get better.” He echoed.

“Better to stop waiting and start living your own life. Better this happened sooner than later. Yixing, this is a blessing in disguise.”

“But…”

“But nothing. Look, you never would’ve listened if me or one of the guys had told you waiting for her was pointless. You would’ve just kept waiting and ignored us. For as much as it hurts now, it’s better to hurt a lot now than slowly deteriorate over time waiting for something that would never happen.” I said.

“Besides, you don’t need her.” I continued. “Look at Bing. He is amazing, and you raised him to be that way. He’s exactly like you in all the best ways possible. He doesn’t need his mom to be happy, and neither do you. Besides…” I trailed off, not knowing if I should say what was on the tip of my tounge.

“Besides… what?” He asked.

“There is someone… else.” I said slowly. “Someone who likes you. A lot. And I know she loves Bing, too.”

“Yisoo, I don’t know if I’m ready for something like that-“

“I’m not saying you have to be. I’m saying, it’s there.” I interrupted. “Miyeon likes you a lot, Yixing. And I really think she’s worth a chance.”

Yixing didn’t reply for a while. He just leaned back onto my shoulder and began to rub his son’s back.

“I’m not waiting anymore. Not for people who aren’t worth it, or for love to come to me.” Yixing said after a while.

“You’re not.” I affirmed.

“I don’t need to, I’m done waiting for life to happen to me.”

“That’s right. You’re going to live your own life.” I said.

“I am.” Yixing said, and after a pause, “Thank you.”

“To me?” I asked.

“Yes to you!” He laughed lightly. “You’re not just Kyungsoo’s kid sister or a babysitter, Yisoo. I hope you know that.”

“Sure.”  I mumbled.

“You’re not.” Yixing stated firmly. “You’re part of our family.”

            With that, I felt my phone buzz again and saw that I had another 28 new messages.

            “Some family we got here.” I laughed as I read through the texts (Luhan had not realized it was a group message and had asked Sehun to get his One Direction cd out of his car. Needless to say, endless heckling had ensued as Luhan had tried to convince them the cd was Jaehan’s, not his own.)

            Yixing laughed and replied.

“I wouldn’t ask for any other.”
