The Wolf

The necklace made a huge ruckus in the following hours. People were shouting and yelling at each other, and several times their wives had to go between their husbands, to stop them from starting a fight. Some people said to burn the necklace, while other claimed it would only make the wolf angry, and feared that by doing that, the whole village would be cursed. Some said to send you out in the forest and give you to the beast in hope that it would leave everyone else alone, but your parents and some other families that were close to yours, refused to do that. Some said that you should at least wear the necklace, as it was not just a warning, but also a gift, but your parents refused to let it come near you. You had also been locked in a room at the villages Inn, and everyone besides your family was forbidden to see you.

Personally you were still in shock. You just sat at the bed and starred at the wall in front of you, all kinds of different thoughts going through your head as you were completely unable to sort them out. You also wanted someone to talk to, but your friends weren’t allowed to enter, and Lucy had things to sort out regarding the marriage, while Tao had to take care of Alice while your parents tried to calm down those who wanted to send you away as fast as possible.

After a while you looked down at your hands, and got surprised as you saw how wet they were. You lifted your hands up to you face and realized that you were crying. You hadn’t even noticed all the tears that were streaming down your face, and now that you did, you wondered why you were crying. If it was because of the loneliness, the fear of what was going to happen next, or simply because the whole situation just became too much for you. You sat there as those new discovered tears flowed down your face and these new thought and questions went through you head. You ended up gripping your hair and almost screaming out in frustration as you suddenly heard a knock on the window.

You looked up and landed your eyes on the window. You wondered how anyone could have knocked on it, considering that you were on the second floor and not on the first where the windows would have been reachable. You wiped your tears as you heard another knock and walked towards the window. You carefully opened it, afraid that someone could see it and believe that you were trying to escape. You looked down, only to get a rock flying past your ear. Your eyes widened before you looked down at the culprit.

“What do you think you’re doing? Have you gone insane?” You hissed down at him, only to have him smile back up at you.

“I thought I’d keep you company” Luhan said as he grabbed a hold of the wall and started to climb. “Move over, I’m coming up”

Your mouth dropped as you watched him climb up the wall, and as he reached up, you just looked at him with you jaw dropped and eyes big.

“Mind letting me in before someone sees me?” He said with a little smile, obviously trying to hold back his laughter. You snapped out of it and moved over so he could climb in. And as soon as his feet hit the floor and he turned around, you threw your arms around him and buried your face in his shirt, not wanting him to see the fresh tears that started to pour out of your eyes like a waterfall. You felt a wave of relief as Luhan laid his arms around you and hugged you tightly, while he slowly started to your hair.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t come sooner, but it’s pretty much chaotic outside.” He said with a calm and soothing voice, as you just replied with nodding, not yet ready to depend on your voice to bear. “Oh, and before I forget; Tao told me to say hi.” You looked up at him and raised your eyebrow.

“Tao wanted to check that you were okay, but since he had to take care of your sister, he couldn’t do that, so he sent me instead, I would have come anyway though” He said as he smiled at you, and you thought you could see a hint of sadness in his eyes. “I really got worried when I heard about what happened, but what’s most important is that you’re safe” He said as he bent down and kissed your forehead.

“I want to go home.” You whispered. “I just want to go home and pretend like none of this happened. I want to wake up in my bed and find out that this is all a dream, and that there’s still a week left before Lucy is getting married, but I know that it won’t happen. I know that no matter how hard I pinch my arm I’m not going to wake up.”

“I have an idea that might help” Luhan said as he looked down at you again. “Why don’t you try to go to sleep? I’ll try to be here when you wake up, if no one else comes before that of course, and then I’ll watch over you and take away all the nightmares that try to enter your head. And when you wake up, I promise that everything will be better.”

You slightly nodded as he took your hand and walked you over to the bed. As you lay down, he covered you with the blanket and sat down on the floor next to you as he held your hand and started to hum on a melody that sounded so sweet to your ears that your eyelids slowly began to feel heavier before they closed and you entered the realm of dreams.

-

You woke up several hours later, and a smile spread on your face as you realized that not only had you just had a night’s sleep without any nightmares, but you were also lying in your own bed. You jumped out of your bed and rushed over to the window and looked out through the glass. Down on the ground you could see that everything looked just like normal. Your smile widened, as you almost began to hope that the whole thing about the wolf just had been a dream after all. And with that in mind you ran downstairs and picked up an apple on your way out the front door. You walked over to your father who was busy with fixing one of the fences. You stopped behind him before you tapped his shoulder and smiled at him as he turned around.

“Hi dad. Need any help?” You asked, but he just smiled and shook his head.

“No need, I’ve got your brother helping me already. Why don’t you go help your mother instead? She could need your help right now since she doesn’t have Lucy around to help her out anymore.”

You forced out a smile as you nodded, while on the inside your heart sank to the pit of your stomach, as you realized that what you had hoped was just a dream, was as real as the daylight you were standing in. You silently walked to the garden to help your mom, while inside your head you were screaming.

-

The day went by faster than you had expected, and soon you were back in the realm of dreams. In this dream you were on a big plain of red grass. Farther ahead laid a blue forest and behind that you could see a chain of light pink mountains, the tops of them covered with purple clouds. You looked around, only to see that everything seemed to have the wrong color, except yourself. You were alone, and as you looked around you started taking a few steps in different directions. You kept on going like that until you heard the snapping and rustling of branches. You looked towards the sound and saw a silhouette. As you squinted your eyes and looked closer, you could see that the silhouette belonged to a boy. He stood still and looked at you as you took a few steps closer.

“Hello?” You said, still not able to see his face. He kept standing there, not saying a single word, and then he just turned around and started to walk.

“Hey! Wait!” You called after him as you started to run. You ran over the plain, the tall grass whipping your legs, but you couldn’t care less about that, you just wanted to find out who that boy was. You had heard that people sometimes found answers for their questions from persons that appeared in their dreams, and you hoped that the boy would be one of those dream persons.

As you broke through the trees you looked for the boy. He was standing not too far from you, and as soon as you saw him, he turned around and continued to walk. You ran after him again, and every time you found him he would just turn around and keep on walking. You continued like this until you were almost tired out. It was weird, you though, how he could walk so calmly and yet be so much further ahead of you.

You stopped once again and supported your hands on your knees, while you tried to steady your breath. As you looked up again, the boy stood halfway up a small hillside. As he turned around again and started to walk, you took a deep calm breath and went after him, this time you were walking, as you didn’t want to collapse on top of the hill. As you walked up the hill, you couldn’t help but to think of how weird the whole dream was. Nothing had its natural color, there was only you and a boy whom you couldn’t see the face of and who kept leading you farther into the depths of the forest, and to add something to the list, you were exhausted. That was what confused you the most. You were exhausted in a dream. A dream for you, were a place where nothing really made sense, and pain and exhaustion were feelings that wasn’t really there. And yet here you were; your feet acing and exhaustion building up for each step you took.

As you reached the top and the ground flattened out, you didn’t even bother to look for the boy, instead you supported your hands on your knees again and tried without success to steady your breath once again. But as you heard sounds coming from right in front of you, you couldn’t help but to look up. And the sight that met you made you forget about your pains and exhaustion as you held your breath and looked at the black wolf that stood before you on a big boulder.

It looked bigger now than before, as it stood upright in its full pride; ears and chest pointed forward and tailed raised in a posture used by the wolfs of higher ranking in the pack. Standing on top of the boulder made it look majestic as well, and you couldn’t help but be amazed. The wolf looked down on you, and you suddenly felt scared again. This could be a different twist of one of the nightmares that had haunted you, and if it was, you wouldn’t want to be in it anymore. As you took a step back, you could hear a laughter floating in the air around you.

From behind a tree next to the boulder, you could see the boy stepping out. He walked over to the wolf and laid his hand on the wolf’s back, his face was still unclear and covered with shadow as he turned his head towards you, and only his mouth was visible as he started to speak.

“You seek answers and yet, when you have your chance to get them, you back away.” He said with a laugh in his voice as he shook his head slightly. “I have to say that I find your behavior amusing.” He said as a smile played over his lips, but as the wolf snarled a little, the boy shut his mouth, though his smile didn’t disappear.

“I do believe you have some questions and answers that you hope to get? Speak your questions, and I will answer on my friend’s behalf.” He said, as you nodded slightly and cleared your voice.

“Why are you doing this to me? Why are you appearing in front of me and scaring the hell out of me and my family? Why aren’t you doing this to anyone else?” You asked, desperate to get your answers, and as you looked into the yellow eyes in front of you, it didn’t sound like it was the boy, but actually the wolf that spoke the words you heard.

“I never meant to scare you. I felt lonely the day I first met you. I had wandered away from the rest of my pack, as I still felt lonely in their company. When I saw you I noticed that you were different. That is why I came again. As you might have guessed, it was my doing to leave the wooden piece in your bag. It was a gift, but of course I didn’t expect you to understand that. As I barked, it was never of the intention to make you scream like you did. I would very much like to explain everything to you right away, but I’m afraid that I can’t. You will have to wait for the right time to come.” He answered calmly.

“What? I don’t understand…”

“And I don’t expect you too.”

“Wait a second, what about the necklace? Is that to just a gift? And in that case, why are you giving me these things?”

“The necklace is not just a mere gift. It’s for protection.”

“Protection?” You said, only getting more and more confused.

“Yes, protection. And it would be wise of you to wear it. It will do nothing but gather dust if you hang it up on the wall.”

You gathered your thoughts once again in search for another question. You had had so many of them just minutes ago, and now you could only remember one of them. And so you asked: “Why me?”

“I already told you. You are special.” He answered calmly once again.

“I know you said that already, what I mean is-“You cut yourself of and let out the breath you hadn’t noticed you were holding.

Laughter could be heard once again, this time it wasn’t coming from the boy, but actually from the wolf itself. Your eyes widened as you realized that.

“Make the most out of the days to come, because when you leave it will be too late, and the things that were left unsaid will stay unsaid and regretted.” The voice of the wolf said. And as you looked in front of you, you could see the boy and wolf melt together in both figure and voice as the words where whispered in the air.

“We’re coming for you.”
