The Wolf

The sound of feet moving towards you woke you up from your slumber. You opened your eyes slowly and turned around towards the sound. You smiled a little and let out a yawn as a pair of yellow eyes, almost hidden behind black hair, looked back at you.

“I thought you were sleeping.” Kai said as he sat down next to you and took some of your hair between his fingers. You smiled as he began to play with it.

“Well, I was until you came. Your steps woke me up.” You looked up at him and found him looking surprised back at you. “I thought you were a heavy sleeper. At least that’s what you used to be.”

You looked up and blinked confused at him. “And how would you know that? Don’t you sleep at night?”

“No, I have an inner wolf that likes to howl against the moon every night to test who’s a heavy sleeper and who’s not.” He said with a smile and laughed when you punched his arm. “You’re getting stronger.” He said and rubbed his arm a little. You looked up at him and raised an eyebrow. “Who said I was ever weak?”

“No one really. Just an impression.” He said with a shrug of his shoulder before a smile tugged the corner of his mouth upwards. You raised both your eyebrows in surprise and sat up. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Kai smiled and ruffled your hair a little. You frowned. You hated when he did that, and he knew. “Nothing.” He said and stood up and stretched out a hand for you. “I said I wanted to show you something.” You looked at him for a short second, a little suspicious, before you took his hand and let him help you to your feet.

Kai led you out of the cave and into the night. You held on to his hand as you followed him. It was difficult for you to keep up with his pace in the darkness. Kais sight was better than yours and any other humans in both the day and the night. He could easily see the rocks and roots in the pale light of the stars and the moon; to you on the other hand, it all just morphed together in shades of black and grey.

Before long, Kai slowed down and walked slower. You weren’t sure if it was because he wanted to, or if he understood that your night vision wasn’t as good as his was. Either way, you were thankful for it. Now you could walk normally and have less fear for stumbling over something for each third meter.

“Where are we going?” You asked after a while. You had been walking for a while now, and you had lost track of how far from the den you had gone. Kai gave you a smile over his shoulder. “It’s a surprise. We’re almost there.” You furrowed your brows in thought, but didn’t say anything. As long as he knew where you were, you were fine with that.

You kept walking for a few more minutes when Kai stopped. You yawned and walked straight into his back. Surprised, you jumped back and look questioningly at his back. He turned around with a little smile and took both your hands. “We’re here. It’s right outside the bushes. Now, I want you to close your eyes and don’t open them before I say so. Okay?”

You looked at him for a second. Was it really that smart to close your eyes? What if he was just pranking you? You shrugged of the thought and closed your eyes. Kai smiled and tightened his grip on your hands before he started to walk. You followed him blindly and swore that he’d pay for it if he were pranking you.

You furrowed your brows when you almost stumbled on a rock or some roots or whatever it was, but you kept going. You felt a little uncomfortable when the branches of the bushes swept over your face. You wanted to open your eyes and pull your hands back to cover your face, but you didn’t. You just furrowed your brows and allowed him to lead you to wherever you were going.

You smiled a little when you no longer could feel the branches on your face. Hopefully, you could open your eyes soon and see whatever it was that he wanted to show you. You were almost sure that he had stopped and stopped in your tracks for a short second. However, your guess was wrong, and Kai kept moving. With a yelp, you stumbled over your own feet at the sudden pull in your arms and lost your balance.

Kai tried to catch you, and almost succeeded, but ended up falling to the ground as well. You landed on top of him with your face against his chest. You didn’t dare to look up. You were afraid you would blush and embarrass yourself. You were afraid that he’d be angry with you. However, Kai only laughed. “Open your eyes, Avry.”

You slowly opened your eyes and raised your head. At first, all you could see was Kais smiling face in front of you. You thought he had taken you to somewhere in the woods, but then a light appeared in your peripheral view. It came closer and closer until it turned into a firefly that flew between your faces. You looked at the firefly with amazement and followed the little glowing insect with your eyes. Soon you saw more of them. There were hundreds of fireflies flying around in the moonlight. Soon you could see the rest of the place.

The fireflies were dancing in the air around and above a lake. The silent water reflected both the stars and the moon, and all the lights of the fireflies around it. Your eyes widened at the beauty of the lake in the night as you sat up. Kai got to his feet and helped you up before he encircled his arms around your from behind and rested his chin on your shoulder. “This is what I wanted to show you.” He said in your ear. His voice sent shivers down your spine. “The lake is a beautiful place at day, but at night it becomes magical.”

You leaned back a little and nodded. You weren’t sure what to say. His sentence pretty much summed it up. Your eyes glided over that scenery in front of you. As your eyes adjusted to the darkness, you could see silhouettes of other couples around the lake. Maybe this was some sort of popular place to go on dates or things like that.

You had to smile a little at all the cute lovey-dovey couples. However, one caught you attention. On the other side of the lake, in the middle of a swarm of fireflies was a couple sitting against a huge boulder. The girl leaned against the boy and looked like she was head over heels for him. The boy had his arm around her shoulders in a sort of protecting way. They seemed like normal sweet couple. However, the boys’ eyes were locked on you. You looked back at him for a while, but his eyes didn’t move an inch. You tried to look away, but after a while, you ended up glancing quickly over at him. He was still looking at you. You frowned a little and turned your head to look at Kai. His eyes was on the reflection in the water. He looked like a little kid who was fascinated at seeing fireflies for the first time. You smiled a little at that.

“Kai.” You said to get his attention. He snapped back to reality and blinked a little before looking at you. You smiled. “I was just wondering about something.”

“What is it?” He asked and rested his head on your shoulder again.

“That guy over there by the boulder, he’s looking at me. Not like the others do. He won’t look away, not even when I stare back at him. Who is he?” You could feel Kais arms tightening around you. You looked down at his hands and placed yours on top of his.

“That’s Junhyung.” You furrowed your brows a little. For some reason unknown to you, Kai didn’t sound too happy about the guy. You decided to let I slide for now. You didn’t want worries to ruin your mood. You smiled up at him and placed your hand on his cheek to get his attention away from Junhyung. “What is this place? Hana showed me more places than I thought was possible, but she didn’t show me this place.” You heard him chuckle from behind you.

“It’s the lake. It’s not that much to look at in the day. A nice place to take a swim on a hot day, but not very much to look at. At night however, well, you can see for yourself. It becomes beautiful don’t you think?” You nodded, and a smile formed on your lips as you could feel warmth filling you up from inside. It was an unusual feeling, but you liked it.

“I thought you’d like to see it, and also if you were going to see it, I wanted to be the one to show you.”

“Well I’m glad you did.” You said as you leaned back into his embrace. “It’s beautiful.”

“I know. And do you want to know the best part?” You could almost hear the smirk in his voice. Not sure if you were going to like the answer or not, you asked. “No I don’t. Tell me.”

“Because it’s still summer, the water isn’t too cold.” Your eyes widened, but before you could protest, he had already picked you up in his arms. You tried hitting his chest and begging him to put you down, but he just laughed.

Some of the other couples turned their heads to look at you, but every time you thought one of them would help you, they just smiled at your childish acts. Obviously, Kai throwing someone into a lake wasn’t something new.

“No no no no! Don’t do this! Kai do-” The rest of your protests drowned as he simply just threw you into the lake. You shut your eyes tightly and held your breath as your body crashed into the water.

The cold water hit you and your eyes shot open. You opened your mouth to scream at the coldness that surrounded you. Your mouth quickly went shut again as the air left you. You waved your arms and tried to get a hold of what’s up and down. Finally, your foot hit the ground beneath you and you stood up.

You broke through the surface of the water with a gasp for fresh air as the cold-water trickled down your body. The water reached just above your stomach. You blinked away the water in your eyes before you looked at Kai who could hardly hold back his laughter.

A smile started to form on your lips as you put your hands back in the water. With a quick movement, you raised your arms and flung the water at him. You could see his eyes widen as the water hit him. You could see surprise written all over his face as he looked at you, standing stiff at the rocks by the edge of the lake. You couldn’t help but laugh at his shocked expression.

However, that laughter soon died when he began to chuckle and move towards you. He walked straight into the lake as if he didn’t even notice the water. You slowly walk backwards as he came closer. You were about to turn around and run when your foot hit a rock and got you out of balance.

You fell into the water again and hurriedly tried to reach back up to the surface. When you did, you stood up quickly and rubbed your eyes with your hands to get the water out of them. When you looked up again, Kai was standing right in front of you.

“You can’t do anything. I’m already soaked and standing in the middle of the lake.” You said with a smile, as you believed that would save you from whatever he was thinking about. However, you were wrong. With a grin, he raised his arms and flung the water right in your face.

You looked at him with shock as you blinked your eyes and started to laugh. You took a step closer to him as you shook your head. “Oh, you shouldn’t have done that.”

Kai just laughed at your attempt to seem threatening. However, his laughter ended as you jumped at him and pulled him into the water. The only bad thing about it was the fact that you were pulled into the water with him.

It was an unplanned move, but you didn’t regret it. You surprised him and got your revenge, and besides, you were already soaked, so going under the water again wasn’t really a big deal. You tried to steady yourself to get up from the water, but was surprised when Kai slung his arm around your waist and held you down with him.

You thought you couldn’t be more surprise, but once again, he proved you wrong by kissing you under the water. However, you just smiled and placed your arms around his neck as you returned the kiss. It wasn’t an intense or needy kiss, but a soft and sweet kiss.

When you both ran out of air, you reached for the surface again. Your arms was still secured around his neck as he pulled you up from underneath the water. Your eyes locked with his as a smile spread across your face. Kai gave you a quick peck before lifting you up in his arms again. “We should get out of the water before we both catch a cold. Hana would never leave me alone if you got sick right after she met you. I think she likes you.”

You smiled a little and nodded your head before you leaned against him. You didn’t mind being carried out of the water. “She’s nice. I hope that we’ll get along as well as we did today. She even planned to show me around tomorrow too, but this time she decided to let you tag along. Her brother didn’t seem too happy about the ‘girls only’ restriction.” Kai chuckled as he let you down on the dry ground.

“Understandable. He’s been asking a lot of questions about you. He’s curious.”

“Well then hopefully he’ll get most of his questions answered tomorrow then.”

“Let’s hope so, but right now I think we’ll have to get back. Chanyeol was mad at me for letting you walk off with Hana. If he finds out that I took you out in the middle of the night too I’m dead meat. He’s worried about you, and he doesn’t want you to push yourself too far.”

“I think I’ll be safe. After all, if something happens I’ve got you to protect me.” You bumped into his arm with your shoulder.

“You’ll always have me to protect you.” He said and kissed your forehead before entwining your fingers. “Come on. I’ll follow you back to the cave.” You nodded and tightened your grip at his hand. A smile formed on your lips when you felt him press back.

You took one last glimpse on the lake. The moonlight reflected in the water you had just come up from. The fireflies flew around and cast their yellow light over the place. It was so beautiful; you didn’t want to leave just yet. But as your eyes met with Junhyung again, you had a change of mind. Something about him just felt wrong, and you didn’t like it. However, you just shrugged it off and started walking next to Kai on your way back to the den. Leaving the other couples and Junhyung, and all the uneasiness about him behind.

* * * * *

I'm sorry this update took some time, but I really had problems finishing up this chapter. In the end, I ended up just taking inspiration from something that happened today.
I was walking home from school with one of my classmates when we passed this water that I walk by on my way to and from school. Then we he started joking and he ended up taking my bag and putting it on a rock out in the water. When I went to get it, he came up from behind and pushed me so that I fell into the water. Not funny. The water was cold and I got soaked, he hardly got any water on his shoes. I ended up using his shoes and forcing him to carry my bag. And let me just say that those shoes were big! I felt like a penguin walking around in them! And in addition, I was soaked. I'm just glad we hardly met any people. But I'll get my revenge on him :)

Love you all ~
