The Wolf

You frowned as sunlight hit your face. You let out a yawn, still too sleepy to wake up just yet, so you turned your face away from the light and tried to fall asleep again. You felt yourself slowly pulled back to your dreams before a gust of cold wind blew over your back and made you shiver. You frowned again and curled into a ball to keep yourself warm. You had just settled into a comfortable position when another gust of wind blew over you and made your body shiver again.

You silently cursed while you searched blindly for your blanket, believing that you were home in your bed; with the window left open from when you fell asleep. You decided to scold Tao for leaving it open after the conversation you had with him last night, just like you did every night before you went to sleep.

You felt something warm a few centimeters away from you and scooted closer to it. Once you felt the warmth that was emitting from it, you snuggled in closer to it and buried your face in the soft fabric. You smiled a little as you finally relaxed again. It smelled good and the warmth made your entire body relax once again. You even thought you could feel a heartbeat, but figured that it was just your imagination playing tricks on you.

It wasn’t before your source of warmth began to move, and something was placed around your waist to pull you closer, that you realized that it had to be something else than a blanket or a big pillow.

You slowly opened your eyes and widened at the sight in front of you. The beautiful face of a boy met your sleepy gaze. He was still sleeping; eyes closed and with a deep and steady breath. His soft black hair was messy and covered his forehead. You looked down at your waist to see his arm around you.

You blinked a few times, still too sleepy to figure out who he was and why he was sleeping next to you in your bed. You slowly sat up, trying not to wake up the sleeping boy. You didn’t want him to wake up and demand that you explained something you didn’t even know yourself.

You figured the best thing you could do was to go to Taos room, wake him up and tell him about the boy sleeping in your bed. He would know what to do, he always did. You looked down to climb of your bed, when you realized that you weren’t on your bed, but on a leaf covered ground. Panicked, you looked around at the stone that surrounded you. The wind wasn’t coming from your window; it came from a cave opening. Moreover, the boy wasn’t in your room or in your bed; he was laying on the ground inside a cave.

Horror filled you as you lost all memories of what had happened that past time, and of your new friendships. You panicked and felt suffocated. Your breath got heavier and soon you were panting for air as tear of fear and frustration started to fill your eyes. In your dreams, you had been home. Everything had been the way it used to be, and now you were in a cave with a sleeping stranger next to you.

You couldn’t hold it in anymore. You didn’t know what to do. Your feelings overwhelmed you, and you did the only thing that seemed reasonable at the moment; you screamed. You put your hands on your ears and screamed at the top of your lungs, hoping that someone would hear you and find you. That someone would find you and take you back home to your family, and away from this place and the stranger beside you.

Kais eyes shot open at the sound of your scream. His ears twitched and his eyes immediately caught sight of you screaming beside him. The high-pitched sound made his ear hurt, and he quickly grabbed your shoulders to calm you down.

“Avry! Calm down, your safe. There’s nothing to be afraid of, so stop screaming.” He said as he locked eyes with you. Still affected by the sleep and current lack of memories, you screamed even louder, desperately trying to get his hands off your shoulders so that you could get away from him.

Kai let out a little sigh, realizing that you were unable to recognize both him and your surroundings. He grabbed your hands, that were trying everything from scratching to punching him to get him away from you, and locked them in a tight grip in one of his own before he used the other to pull you towards him.

He let go of your hands and wrapped both his arms around your shoulders. You tried to push him off, but he was simply too strong. You tried to hit his back and even attempted to use your nails to scratch him, but he wouldn’t budge. He just tightened his embrace and started whispering in your ear for you to calm down.

“Avry.” He called your name softly, and something in his voice made you calm down. The feeling of fear slowly died down, and your hand stopped hitting his back and fell lifelessly to your side.

Kai still held you in his arms for a little while longer, just to be sure that you had calmed down before he let go of you. He knew you could be strong if you needed to, and fear usually made people even stronger. If you were to let you fear take over and attack him, he would have problems with not hurting you while he at the same time tried to hold you back from escaping.

Kai never wanted to keep you anywhere against your will, but your scream was loud, and it could have attracted unwanted attention. Letting you run away now would be a bad idea, as it could lead to consequences he didn’t even want to think about.

When he was sure that you had calmed down, he slowly let go of you and leaned back, making some space between you. You stared at him blankly. Something about him seemed familiar, but you just couldn’t put your finger on it.

“Who are you?” You silently asked and looked at him, studying his facial features and trying to figure out why he looked so familiar to you.

“Avry, it’s me.” Kai said with a hint of hope in his voice. This wasn’t the first time you had wakened without memory of where you were and who they were. The first days after you had met Kai and the others had gone just fine, but after about a week, you had started to wake up some nights and freak out when you couldn’t recognize where you were.

The worst time was when you had camped near a river. You had heard the sound of the running water and walked out of the cave. Your father always told you to follow the river if you ever got lost. It would always lead you to civilization and to help. You had remembered your fathers’ words and tried to get to the river. You had successfully gotten out of the cave and was moving away from the camp when you had met Sehun. He had been out on patrol.

You didn’t recognize him as anything else, but a big monster wolf, and freaked out and started to scream while you threw rocks at him in an attempt to make him go away. Kai and Chanyeol had both heard your scream and came to you as fast as possible. Chanyeol, being the strongest amongst them, had held you still, while Kai had tried to calm you down. It had helped, and after that, you had stayed inside the cave for the rest of the night and the day after.

You looked at Kai and tried to remember his face. You knew you had seen him before, but you still couldn’t recognize him. Kai seemed to understand, and let out a little sigh before locking eyes with you again.

“It’s me, Kai.” He said and smiled a little at you, hoping that his name would ring a bell. You looked at him, still feeling a little clueless. You blinked at him a few times before it all came back to you and your eyes widened.

“Kai!” You said, as you looked wide-eyed at him. “It’s you. It really is you!”

Kais smile widened as relief washed through him. He pulled you towards him and embraced you once again. You blinked a little at his sudden movements, before you slowly raised your arms and hugged him back. You felt a little confused when you could feel tears building up in your eyes, but you let them fall, figuring that they were happy tears.

“Don’t scare me like that.” Kai softly spoke in your ear after a few seconds of silence. “I know it’s not the first time, and I know that you can’t help it. However, this is the first time it has happened when I’m alone with you. What would happen if I weren’t able to handle this on my own?” You bit the inside of your cheek at his words and nodded slightly while your arms tightening around him.

“You really scared me Avry, please don’t do it again. Not when I’m alone with you without any guarantee of stopping you and bringing you back to reality before it’s too late. If something bad where to happen to you, I wouldn’t know what to do or if I would be able to forgive myself.” His voice got lower and softer by each word, until his voice was nothing but a soft whisper in your ear. However, you heard him, and his words gave you an uncomfortable lump in your stomach.

“Kai…” You said as you eased your grip around him and leaned back to get eye contact with him. Kai blinked at you and waited for you to continue. “I’m sorry for letting this happen, and if I’m somehow able to prevent it from happening again, then I promise to not make it happen again. It scares me to you know. In my dreams, I were home with my family, and everything was back to the way it used to be. Then I woke up, and suddenly I was somewhere that was definitely not my room, with a person I couldn’t remember, sleeping beside me. It scares me, every time.”

Kai nodded silently. He didn’t need to say anything; you knew that he knew. The first time it happened, you had been totally devastated and unable to stop the tears from rolling down your face. You had cried nonstop while the boys had taken turns on comforting you and trying to calm you down by talking to you or simply just hug you while telling you that everything was going to be all right. During those hours, you had talked to them about everything your mind could come up with, and therefore, you had told him about how you had believed that you where home until you opened your eyes and realized you weren’t.

Kai raised his hands and wiped he tears from your cheeks. You still didn’t know why you were crying. You didn’t feel sad, or happy enough to cry. It was all just weird and confusing. You smiled a little as he rested his hands on your cheeks, and the warmth from his palm spread throughout your face. Kai smiled at you and kissed your forehead before he sat back down on the ground and leaned his back against the boulder he had used as a pillow while sleeping.

You sat down next to him and shyly leaned your head against his shoulder. You thought about everything that had happened since you were taken away from home, and wondered how everyone was doing. You missed them, and you were sure they missed you too, but you couldn’t help but to wonder if everyone lived they lives as normal, or if some of them were spending some of their days wondering where you were or if you were even alive.

The probably think I’m dead.

You bit your lip as the thought passed through your mind. You didn’t want to think that way, but you couldn’t deny that it made sense. You let out a sigh. You still didn’t even know why Kai had abducted you. You had asked not just him, but the others as well, many times, but they all told you to be patient. You were sick of it.

“Kai.” You looked up at him, only to be met by his beautifully deep brown eyes. “Why am I here? Why did you take me away?”

Kai let out a sigh. You had asked him the same question at least ten times already, and you never seemed to get tired of asking it. He understood though, he would have felt the same way if he was you. “Avry, I’ve already told you-”

“Stop it.” You cut him off before he could finish the sentence you had heard too many times. “I’m tired of waiting. Tell me why I’m here, or I’ll have to find out myself. I don’t know how I’ll do it, but if it means walking straight in to the heart of the den then I’ll do it. And we both know that you wouldn’t want that to happen.”

You didn’t like to threaten him. You felt like you had no right to. He had been taking care of you, and without him and the others you would probably be dead a long time ago. Still, if it were the only way to make him speak, you would do it.

Kai let out a sigh. He had different reasons why he didn’t tell you. It was easiest to just say that you had to be patient for a little longer. However, patience was something you had very little of, and he knew that he wouldn’t be able to keep you on your toes for much longer.

You almost yelped as Kai suddenly slung his arm around your waist and pulled you up on his lap. He secured an arm around you and looked into your eyes before he started to speak.

“Don’t ever think of entering the den without me. It would be like trying to walk through a wall of fire without being burned.” You nodded a little, surprised by the sudden seriousness in his eyes. “I don’t know very much, and that’s why I’m telling you to be patient, so that I can gather more information before I tell you anything. However, seeing how impatient you are, I guess I’ll just have to tell you. Are you sure you want to know?”

You nodded slowly. Even if he could only give you a small amount of information, you would take what you could get. Kai nodded back at you and grabbed your wrist. You looked confused at him before you looked down at you hand.

Kai slowly turned your hand until the inside of your palm was pointing upwards and the backside of your hand downwards. Your eyes widened at the sigh in front of you. A few centimeters under your palm, you could see a mark on your skin that you had never seen before.

It was a black wolf paw print. It wasn’t big, about two times the size of your thumb. It was clear as black ink on white paper. Around it was a circle. The circle was not as clear as the paw print, and looked like it was made out of vines, entwined into each other, with a few small flower buds growing out of them. It was beautiful, and it looked like a tattoo. The only weird thing about it was that you were too young to have any tattoos. It wasn’t a birthmark either, because you had never seen it before.

“W-What is this?” You stuttered as you looked at it with amazement.

“That,” Kai said and carefully his finger over the mark. “Is the mark of one of the wolf clans. The mark of one of the mightiest wolf clans has ever been in this land. And considering how many there are, and how powerful some of them are, that makes it pretty strong.” You looked at him with confusion written all over your face. You had almost no idea what he was talking about. Kai laughed a little at your confused expression.

“It’s special because that mark hasn’t been used since before I was born. You see, a clan can consist of more than one pack. They are part of the same clan and the same family, but they live in different parts of the territory, and therefore become different packs. There are no borders and hostilities between them, and they have the same Alfas as the others.” Kai stopped to make sure that you were still paying attention before he continued. ”The wolves within the clan went to war against each other. I’m not sure why, but they did. In the end, they split the clan into two different packs. They divided the territory and put the border in the middle, dividing the packs into the northern and southern part of the territory. The packs have been sworn enemies ever since.”

“That’s terrible.” You said shocked. War was bad, but a war were family went against family was even worse. Kai nodded and tightened his grip around you. You rested your head on his shoulder and waited for him to continue.

“The packs are still at war. They don’t fight in the open, but stay at their own side of the border, waiting for the right time to strike. The reason I recognized it, is that my pack is the one who took the northern part of the territory. The once that we were running from the day you ran away with Sehun, are the pack that took the southern part of the territory. The same pack that Lay belong to.”

You looked up at the mentioning of Lays name. You knew he belonged to another pack, but this was more than you had expected. “So that is why you were so angry at him from the second you saw him, even though he hadn’t done anything to hurt me…”

You let the end of the sentence hang in the air and Kai nodded. “Exactly. Lay isn’t among the worst of our enemies. When I was a kid, I even befriended him. That was before either of us learned why we were meant to hate each other. Of course, we wouldn’t let a silly thing like our ancestors grudge destroy our friendship, but then things happened. We began to realize more of what was really going on, and I guess you can figure out the rest yourself.” You nodded a little to what he said. It surprised you that Lay and Kai had been friends, while the day before they had tried to kill each other.

“You see, the thing is, that Lay would never hurt you unless you did something that hurt him deeply personally. He’s not like that, but as you saw yesterday, the wolf inside of us has an instinct to protect what belongs to it. Moreover, if something belongs to the enemy, it’s only natural to take it or destroy it. Humans feel the same, but not as strongly or in the same way. Because you have been together with me, Chanyeol and Sehun for such a long time, our sent sort of mixes with your own. It’s as if you ran through a field of flowers. You would still have your own smell, but the smell of the flowers would attach itself to you for a certain amount of time before it would wear off. Our smell is the sort of the same, and it’s enough to awaken the animal inside and let the instincts take over.”

You nodded again. It was a lot of information to process, and it took time for you to let it all sink in. Kai squeezed your hand and you looked up at him. He met your gaze and smiled down at you. His other hand secured a strand of hair behind your ear and his movement made you smile.

“You don’t have to be afraid. I won’t let anything happen to you. Not as long as my heart is still beating and I’m able to move.” You couldn’t help but to smile at his words. They really made you feel safe.

“Thank you Kai.” You said softly before you carefully leaned in and place your lips on his. Kai blinked at you before he happily wrapped his arms around you and returned your kiss.
