This was a particularly tricky story to write. I did the best I could without straying too far away from the requested theme, I hope you like it.
Hyemi was a quiet girl. Whether it was around one person or twenty found it difficult to talk to people, except her best friend Woohyun. They had known each other for so long they can’t remember a time when they weren’t friends, at least Woohyun can’t.
Growing up Hyemi had many memories of time spent together from tea parties in magical lands to sleepovers sharing secrets late into the night. At some point along the way she had even learned to appreciate his rather cheesy sense of humour, even if it made her cringe half the time.
Though recently all she’s had are these memories. Woohyun had recently debuted as part of the group Infinite and as a result they have not spoken in months. Feeling like she had lost part of herself in the friend she deeply missed, once the Infinite merchandise began to be released she bought Woohyun’s solo poster and pinned it up inside her locker. Somehow finding comfort in being able to see her friend again even if only a picture of him was her secret way of coping with school when she had difficulty talking to other people.
Once their debut promotions had finished, a now extremely popular Woohyun returned to the school. Seeing the same wonderful smile she always had Hyemi was surprised when she felt like he wasn’t really Woohyun. Sitting through class trying to work out why she felt like he was an imposter, the answer slowly began to sink in as the end of the day grew nearer. After class had ended, Hyemi headed towards her locker to collect the books she’d need for the homework she’d been given through the day but was stopped by Woohyun “Okay what’s going on?”
“I don’t know what you mean.” She replied, trying to get past him to retrieve her textbooks. Stopping her again Woohyun pressed “You’ve been avoiding me all day… I thought we were friends.” Feeling a sharp pain spread across her chest, Hyemi spat “I thought so too, but you haven’t spoken to me in over a year! A single text, that’s all I hoped for just to know how you were doing but not a word… what other way am I supposed to take that?”
Seeing the hurt she had caused, Hyemi chose to ignore her guilt and carried on to get her books. Once she had made space in her bag, Hyemi stopped and quietly turned back to Woohyun.
“You bought my poster?” he smiled almost in disbelief. Turning a soft pink she mumbled “And your EP… and watched your variety shows.”
“Why?” finding herself surprised that he had to ask, she smiled “As much as it hurt that you ignored me, it was never going to stop me supporting you. You’re my best friend and I want you to be happy.”
Exchanging a silent truce, the two friends hugged and promised that no matter how much time passes they will always be best friends.
