A sigh comes from the girl as she stares at herself in the mirror. A new uniform was what she was wearing. She looks at herself, finding the uniform fitting her perfectly. But she missed her old uniform, it was comfortable and the jacket was a bit looser around her. A typical uniform for a public school. But now she was going to an elite high school, one for people that can afford that school. She's only been at the school for at least two months, and she didn't like it. No, no one bullied her like in the other school. At the new school, everyone just wanted to be friends with her because of her reputation and money. Yep, she regretted giving her father her paycheck months ago to buy that stupid lottery ticket. Now she was regretting on how she used to wish that she had all the money. But she was happy, maybe.

The girl hurried into the car and let the paid driver drive her to school. Once she got there, it felt like she entered another realm. It wasn't a great feeling, Doyeon felt empty. Why? She hasn't been liked for who she was, and she regretted wanting to have a friend for once. Doyeon hurries inside the school and towards her class, ignoring her classmate's greetings and other crap. She hung her head low and didn't bother to look up once, until she landed on the ground with a light thud. "Sorry," a deep, husky voice says. A hand is extended out to grab hers, but she only slaps it away as she gathers her books into her arms before standing up straightly. "I should have watched where I was going," the boy says as he nervously chuckles. Doyeon glances up, seeing a dark-skinned boy with a shy grin on his face as he rubs the back of his neck, embarrassed. She glances down at his hand, finding a map of the school and his classes. Ah~ A new student I see. I'll let you off, maybe. She doesn't say anything to him and turns away and walks towards her class again. "W-wait!" the boy calls out, making Doyeon pause as he rushes up to her. "Do you know where class ten A is?" he asks. Doyeon just stares at the boy, then glances away and walks back towards her class. "Hold on!" the boy whines. I'm taking you to your class, idiot. She sighs and continues to walk, while the new boy stalks closely behind her. The girl steps into the classroom, while the new boy glances up to look at the sign above the door. "Oh, here it is... Thank you- uh..." He glanced around him, finding the girl nowhere to be found until he sees a familiar figure in the very first seat. The bell rings, and the transferee grins.

"Yah, what are you still doing out here? Go to class!" one of the teachers scolded.
The boy innocently blinks, "But... I'm new here."
The teacher stares at the boy for a while and nods, "Oh, you're that new kid, Kim Jongin, huh?" Jongin smiles and nods. The elder exhales and steps inside the classroom, "Kim Jongin, welcome to the school. You will be sitting next to Jang Doyeon in the front," the teacher says, pointing at the empty seat as he opens the book on his desk before looking up at the class. Jongin hurries to close the door and rushes to his seat, taking his backpack off his shoulders. He smiles and realizes that he was sitting next the girl from earlier. "Alright class. Just... Do something. I'll come back to check on you later," the teacher mutters before closing his book and stalks out of the classroom. "Someone give the new kid his books!" he hollers as he leaves.

Jongin smiles and glances at Doyeon beside him whose hands were digging through her desk. "Thanks for the help earlier. I wouldn't have gotten here if it wasn't for you-" Jongin's eyes widen when she slams three thick textbooks and two other thin books.
"Those three books are for math, science, and history. The rest are for English and literature," Doyeon says before turning to her own books and starts to work.
Jongin stares at the stack of books in front of him. "T-this is all we have to do?"
"We need to finish all the books before the end of the year," the girl mutters before tying her hair up into a ponytail and starts flipping through her textbook.
The new kid sighs sadly and one by one, sets his textbooks into his desk. He glances around, finding half of the class studying, and the other half goofing around. "How can you guys learn all this stuff?"
"You're in an elite school, and in a class with people who have the highest scores on their last exams. What do you expect?" Doyeon says, her eyes still on her book.
Jongin pouts, and glances at the girl's book, realizing that it wasn't a textbook, but a novel. "Aren't you suppose to be studying too?"
"I finished my books," she simply answers. She pauses and glances at the boy's desk, then back up at him. "If you want to remain in that seat, you better start trying to finish all those books. We're seated by our scores."

The boy glances around, and finds him in the second seat. "I'm in second seat here?"
"Mhm," was all the girl said to reply.
"Wow... My old school never did this..." He glances at Doyeon and smiles, "Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Jong-"
"You're Kim Jongin, I know," Doyeon cuts him off. "Jang Doyeon," she replies.
Jongin continues to smile, "Nice to meet you. Call me Kai, please."
"Whatever," the girl mumbles.

Jongin looked at the signs, looking for his classroom again. Where is it? Ugh. I'm lucky to use the restroom during lunch... He turns around the corner and smiles as he sees his classroom number again and rushes towards it. The dark-skinned boy glances inside as he slowly opens the door, finding Doyeon still at her desk, peacefully reading her book, read three quarters of the book already. Not realizing it, Kai was staring at the only girl in the classroom, admiring at how her eyes gazed across the page of the book. Her eyebrows knitted together slightly, in full concentration and completely in a different world. The corners of Kai's lips slowly curve up into a soft smile. He liked how the sunlight that escaped through the blinds and reflects against her pale, milky skin. This boy didn't like just anyone easily, but when he looked at Doyeon, a sudden change emerges, and his heart beats fast after such a cliché moment.

His attention suddenly snaps when he sees Doyeon glance over at him with cold eyes, "What are you doing here?" she questions. Kai's face turns red as he stands up straightly and rubs the nape of his neck. "Shouldn't you be out making friends or something? Like all newbies do?" she asks before turning back to her book. As harsh as her words were, Kai found her voice to be the softest that he has ever heard.
"Sorry," he mutters. "I-I'm not good at making friends anyway so..."
Doyeon scoffs, but her eyes are not removed from her book, " for you."
Kai slowly steps towards his desk and bites his lower lip, "Maybe you and I could be friends."
Doyeon pauses and glances up at the boy, "What makes you think that I want to be your friend?"
The newbie shrugs and shyly sits in his seat, "You just seem like a nice person to befriend... A-and... Really, you're the only person I've talked to all day."
The girl just stares at him, Kai glances at Doyeon and their eyes meet. She sighs and glances elsewhere, "I don't just
befriend people. And I don't want to be friends with people like you... Rich kid."

Kai blinks, "Why? Is it because I'm rich? What? I'm confused, Doyeon."
The girl smiles to herself sadly and shakes her head, "Never mind..."

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

A good one year later, and everything changes for Doyeon and Kai. "Uhm, see there's this girl I like, and she's very nice, smells good, friendly... Only I see her as that, but no one else does apparently," Kai says as his face starts to redden. "I really want to tell her that I like her... But I can't."
Doyeon stares at her friends Kai looks back at her, "If you told someone else, they'd accept your feelings. But with the girl you like now, she will have to reject your feelings for her," she answers, obviously knowing that the confession was of her.
Kai hung his head low, "I know..." He sighs and sits back in his seat, "I already knew she would..." He raises his head up, smiling brightly at his best friend, "But that's okay! I'm still her friend, that's good enough than losing her," he says.
Doyeon continues to stare at him, finding his eyes slightly red. She sighs, feeling a tad guilty of hurting the boy, "Yeah," she mutters almost inaudibly.

"Do you like anyone, Doyeon?" Kai asks. The girl averts her eyes away from Kai's and exhales, shaking her head. "Not yet?" he questions, smiling softly at him. "I probably should have done that too... Wait." He glances away and softly sniffles, "Whoever you get to be with, is going to be lucky to have a smart, pretty girl." Doyeon only sighs sadly as a response, still feeling guilty.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Kai sighs as he flips to the next page of the novel he was reading, and wow, did it remind him so much of how his relationship with Doyeon started. He should have just ignored the book in the first place, but for some reason, he couldn't stop reading the dang book. Maybe it was because he wanted to know how the main character's relationship would be like in the end, since the main male lead was the one who wanted to befriend the girl, and she rejects him every time like he does. Jongin nibbles on his lip nervously as he continues to read, desperately wanting to see the ending, thinking that maybe it could tell him what could happen to his and Doyeon's friendship. He flips to the next and last page and reading the three sentences that will end the story, 'She didn't turn back to look at me one last time. I knew our friendship has ended, and we weren't going to be friends anymore. Just less...' Kai stares the page before shutting the hardcover book. "Stupidest book and ending I have ever read," he grumbles as he tosses his book onto his desk carelessly.

"There's no book with a stupid ending, Jongin." The dark skinned boy glanced over at Doyeon who was sitting on the boy's desk, eyes on her own book.
Kai slightly smiles at her, "Really? Here, read this book then," the boy says and holds out the book he just finished reading. Doyeon just ignores him, making him throw his book on his desk again. "I'm bored... Let's go do something!" the boy whines.
"Go by yourself," Doyeon utters, giving the boy no attention.
Jongin sighs and glances at the clock, "Aren't your cousins coming over today?"
Doyeon flips to the next page of her book, "Why do you think I'm here?"

"So you're just going to stay over here for the night again? Gosh, Doyeon. You've been hiding here for over a week or two. I gotta have some time to myself and other people!" Kai says.
"Those are the words that come out of your mouth, but your eyes says otherwise," she mumbles.
Kai raises a brow, "You're not even looking at me."
"I know you too well that I don't have to look at you," the girl replies.
Kai chuckles and sits besides Doyeon on the bed. "What are you reading?" the boy asks, but get no response in return. He frowns and suddenly grabs the book from the girl's hand, smirking as he bookmarks the page that Doyeon was reading with his thumb and hops of the bed and jogs across the room, trying to read the cover. "Just Listen," he reads the title out loud. He flips through the pages of the book, grinning. "What is it about?"

Doyeon gets out of the bed and rushes over to the tall male, snatching the book out of the boy's hand, "About listening," she answers, glaring at him. She sets a piece of scrap paper into her book as a bookmark and grabs her bag, "I'm leaving. You're annoying me," she says as she walks past Kai and out the room.
Kai smiles and races after her, "Aw, did I make Doyeon mad?"  He stops her by wrapping his long, strong arms around her, pulling her into a hug from behind, "Kim Jongin is sorry," he says, smiling as he buries his face into the girl's shoulder.
"Let go," she commands, but Kai only shakes his head and continues to hug her. She exhales sharply and looks up to find the boy's mother staring at the two of them. Quickly, Doyeon pushes the heavy Jongin away from her. Kai was the confused one, blinking at her from her sudden push, then followed her gaze to his mother. Oh... Doyeon greets his mother and bows her head politely at the elder who keeps a stern face on, but nods back.

"Are you two going back to your house?" she asks Doyeon who replies by a nod. "Let's go in the same car then..."
Kai raises a brow, "Why are you going to Doyeon's house too, mom?"
"I promised her parents to have a dinner with them today," his mother says.
"But... Her cousins are over-"
"That's one of the reasons I'm going over as well. Come, kids. Don't want to be late," his mother says before turning around to walk towards the front double doors.
Kai sighs and follows behind her, only being held back when Doyeon grabs his wrist. "I don't want to go," she tells him.
He gives her an assuring smile and holds her hand, "I'll stay over night with you if you want. I won't let your family bother you," he says. Sighing, the two quickly exits the manor and into the waiting black car.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

"Oh, and he's going to be a doctor as well! A surgeon is what he said he would be," her aunt says, laughing oh-so annoyingly. "And the eldest just got a degree in law school. Oh! I'm so proud." Doyeon rolls her eyes in disgust as she listens to the conversations shared around the table. Out of all the flaunting adults around the table, only Kai's mother remains silent as she eats her steak, obviously in no interest about the gossips and bragging around the table. Oh, how Doyeon wishes her parents were like her. "Ms. Kim! You've been silent for a while... How's Kai doing?" her aunt asks.

Jongin's mother only glances up at Doyeon's aunt and gives a subtle roll of the eyes, exhaling sharply as she sets her fork and knife down and sips on her wine, "Great," was all she said. Doyeon glances at Kai who was eating his food peacefully.
Her aunt raises a brow and laughs, again annoyingly. "What do you mean by great? Is he getting a good grade? Is he a good child? Is he in the top fifty like my son?"
Her friend's mother finally lifts her head to look at the woman across from her. "Why don't you ask him yourself?" she replies coldly.
A scoff comes, then an eye roll from Doyeon's aunt. "Well, how are you doing, Jongin?"
Kai stops eating after hearing his name and sighs, setting his knife and fork down as well, "Great. Like my mother said. Please stop asking," he mutters.

"Are you still going out with Doyeon?"
The question makes Kai and Doyeon pause. Who the hell would ask them such a question? Kai glances up and raises a brow at the girl's cousin. "Excuse me?"
"Are you two still dating?" the boy questions again.
"What makes you think we're dating, or even were dating?" Doyeon asks in a harsh tone.
A shrug comes from the elder teen, "You two just spend a lot of time with each other, so I thought you two have been going out with each other. I'm actually glad that you two aren't. I mean, why would Jongin go after an ugly girl like you?"
A loud slamming of hands came in contact with the table, shaking the wine glasses and dishes, making all conversations stop. Everyone glanced up at the furious Kai except for his mother who was still eating quietly, while Doyeon continues to glare at her cousin. "Don't you dare insult Doyeon!" Kai exclaims.
"Why can't I? We're family, it's not like it will affect our relationship," the boy slyly replies.

"You-"
"Kim Jongin," his mother warns.
Kai presses his lips into a thin, firm line, glaring at the chuckling boy across the table. No one insults Doyeon like that! As pissed as he was, he takes a deep breath before storming out of the house, leaving Doyeon alone, still shooting death glares at the ugly one across from her.
"Doyeon," her mother says, but Doyeon keeps herself in place, her fists clenched to the point where her knuckles were white. "Doyeon!" her mother scolds louder. Instead of replying to her mother, she pushes her seat back and storms out of the house, looking for Kai.

"Kai?" she calls out, looking around.
"Over here," she hears him say and finds him sitting on the steps of her house. She walks down and sits beside Kai. "Rude family you got in there," he comments.
A sigh escapes from both their lips as Doyeon scoots closer towards Kai, resting her head on Kai's broad shoulder, wrapping her arms around his waist. "Sorry."
A soft chuckle comes from Kai who slung his arm over Doyeon's shoulders. "It's okay... As long as you're not like them, it's okay..."
Doyeon shifts in her seat beside him, "Why does it matter if they insult me or not? You seem so mad at them..."
"Why wouldn't I be? They insulted you, Doyeon!" Kai said, frowning.

Doyeon keeps a straight face on her, showing Kai that she didn't care, "So? If they insult me, then they insult me."
"Doyeon, I don't know what your definition of insult is in your world, but in my world, it's rude-"
The girl cuts Jongin in mid-sentence, "So what if people insult me? They can't affect my life. Even if they tried, their words won't hurt me. My opinions on me matters more than their opinions on me." She glances down at her folded hands in her lap, "Yeah, insults hurt, but only if it's from yourself. It's you that is able to control yourself and talk yourself down."
Kai presses his lips into a straight line, "You're weird, Jang Doyeon. You're very weird..." he mutters, letting out a heavy exhale as he holds his friend closer.
