First Meetings and Flirty Jongdaes

You're Taken?

Minseok sighed. Ever since they changed the subway timetable his nice, relaxing morning train ride had turned into a lost battle to the elderly workers for seats, and a severe sense of feeling like a mint-thin guzzled into the stomach of someone who should not be at an all you can eat buffet. Not to mention today was a Friday, and the trains always seemed at least a hundred times busier.

“Breathe Minseok, at least there’s still enough space to do that,” he muttered under his breath, glaring at his shoes and sighing - he’d only just gotten on the train too. But he couldn’t be all negative - at least he was in a position where he could lean against the wall next to the door. Sometimes he really wished he was old, and then he wouldn’t have to stand all the time and he’d be able to scrutinise noisy minors. Why the hell did they change the train timetables anyway? They were perfectly fine the way they were before.

Minseok looked at his phone and checked the time, only lessening his mood as it turns out he hadn’t even been on the train for two minutes.  Sighing, he mindlessly scrolled up and down his Facebook feed, until after what could have been a few seconds or minutes the train harshly swerved, and all of a sudden he found himself pushed up against the walls of the train with two hands either side of his face. Minseok followed the line of the arms and finally came to the owner of said hands, and what he noticed was that this guy had the most amazing jawline and was staring at him with a certain expression that he couldn’t quite comprehend.

Now, standing this close to a random stranger was nice and all, but Minseok felt quite awkward with the way that this guy was looking at him, especially as he had been doing it for a good 20 seconds. “Uhh - are you going to-,” Minseok stuttered, feeling nervous under the constant stare, “…Move your arms?”

The man snapped out of his reverie and smiled what could have been the most beautiful smile Minseok had ever seen. “Oh, sorry about that, the train turned and I wasn’t stable enough. Then I just got caught up looking at your face. Good job on that one. Ten out of ten on genetics, 'ya know.”

Minseok looked at him awkwardly, “You’re quite forward, don’t you think?”

The stranger smirked, “Well, what’s the use of talking in riddles?  I might as well tell you what’s on my mind – I mean it’s not like you didn’t notice me staring anyway.”

Minseok stood there, a slight blush covering his cheeks – he never could take compliments well, “Didn’t you ever learn it was rude to stare?”

The stranger continued to smirk, “But shouldn’t we appreciate the finer things in life?”

Minseok laughed, mainly out of embarrassment, “You don’t even know my name.”

“But a name is just a word, is it not?”

“It’s a pretty important one though, isn’t it?”

The stranger stood in thought, before nodding, “You have a point... So tell me; what is it?”

Minseok rolled his eyes. “It’s Minseok, and yours? It’d be nice to whether my girlfriend murders you after she finds out about this, what if I don’t have a TV nearby?”

Stranger’s eyes widened, before laughing, “My names Jongdae, but you’re taken? Damn... Since when?”

Minseok went over the name in his head before he’d registered what he had said. Said creepy stranger with the name Jongdae was sad he was taken, what is this? “Since last week, actually,” he said smiling, he had been pining over this girl for weeks, and in the end he didn’t even have to ask her out because she did it.

Jongdae frowned before smiling, “Damn, I just missed out, didn’t I?”

“Guess you did,” Minseok shrugged. He was into guys too. “but I’ve liked her for a while, so I don’t even know.”

“Well she must be pretty lucky then, for you to like her.”

Minseok grinned, “Oh but I’m the lucky one. She’s Girls Generation quality.”

Jongdae gasped, “Wow, I’ve got no chance.”

Minseok laughed, before the both fell into a somewhat-comfortable silence despite the bustle of the train.

. . .

Ten minutes later, Jongdae’s eyes widened and he felt around in his pockets, before looking at Minseok with a pretty good pleading dog impersonation.

Minseok looked at him funny. “What?”

Jongdae looked down embarrassed, “I left my phone at home, and I forgot to tell my friend that I wouldn’t be able to make it to his house when he asked me to… Could I borrow yours for a minute? You can have my wallet or whatever, I won’t steal it.”

Minseok laughed, before pulling his phone out and handing it to him, “Go ahead, just make sure they don’t call back or else I won’t know what to do.”

Jongdae smiled whilst taking the phone, “Thank you so much, you’re actually the best.”

Minseok just smiled back, “No problem.”

Jongdae dialled the number, and spoke into the receiver for a few seconds about being late before handing back the phone. “Thanks a lot, seriously you saved me there.”

“Don’t worry about it, ’s fine.”

The train stopped, and  Jongdae moved so he could exit the subway, “I’ll make sure to pay you back, I promise. Maybe I’ll see you around sometime? But not your girlfriend,” he winked, “I don’t want to see her.

Minseok chuckled, “Maybe, this is my usual train anyway. Have fun at work, doing whatever you do.”

Jongdae smiled and answered back with a will do! before stepping off the train and onto the platform. Minseok watched him walk away through the train windows, and found himself wondering if he's ever hear from him again, before turning to his phone for the next five minutes of his trip.

 . . .

Turns out Minseok heard from him earlier than he’d thought, as the next day he received a message from an unknown number.

From: Unknown
Hey, remember me? ;)

Minseok wrinkled his face in confusion, who could be messaging him?

To: Unknown
Uhh, no. Who are you?

A few minutes later, he received a message back.

From: Unknown
Pfft, and I was so nice to you too.
I guess that the finer things in life aren’t always what they seem ;)

A light bulb went off in Minseok’s head, and he quickly typed back a response.

To: Unknown
Oh! Forward guy on the train, right? Jongnight or something? ;)
How did you get my number?
Did you actually just ring yourself yesterday to get it?
Because that's a little weird I’m ngl.

Minseok smirked to himself, he was pretty funny to be honest.
But how did Jongdae get his number?

From: Unknown
No, I actually got the number off my friend, who I actually rang.
You free tomorrow? Because I wanted to take you out for coffee or something to say thanks -
if I didn’t get there on time I’d walk in to the house with him and his boyfriend doing something and as much as I should enjoy that, not my friends, no thank you.
It’s happened before. Not fun.
And put my name in your contacts, doofus. You look like the forgetful type ;)

Minseok laughed until he read the last bit, where he immediately scowled so hard that he forgot why he was scowling, before deciding that he probably should put his name there, just in case.

To: Jongdae
Pfft, sure ;)
Well in the morning I am, that cool with you? Around 10 or something?
Oh wow, okay. Too much information.

A few minutes later he got a response back, and honestly wondered why he had even agreed to go along with him. All he’d done on the train was hit on him, but Minseok honestly thought he was joking, no matter how flattered he was. He was pretty funny too and seemed friendly enough. They could be friends, right?

From: Jongdae
Yeah that’s cool. Meet me at 10 at the Vinci Café… You know the one with all the clocks? Near the gardens next to the river.

Minseok pulled a confused face, before deciding to go along with it, because he could always look it up later anyway.

To: Jongdae
Sounds good, I’ll make sure to order something expensive, since you’re paying ;)

From: Jongdae
Whatever you wish, princess. I’ll see you tomorrow!

Minseok read the last message, and set a reminder before putting his phone away, a slight smile gracing his face.
