Chapter 8: Guilt
Never a Replacement.
You got on the ambulance with Junhyung. He was bleeding a lot, and you started crying before you noticed that you were. You held his hand all the way to the hospital. Even when he was in pain, he tried hard to smile at you, to make you stop crying.
‘What do you call a grizzly bear with no teeth?’ He looked up at you, trying not to show the pain. ‘I… I don’t know.’ You tried hard to play along, even though you were really worried. You sniffed. ‘A gummy bear!’ Junhyung said, and giggled at his own joke. His face suddenly twisted in pain. ‘Aaah…’ He made a slight sound.
You held his hand tighter, as tears fell from your eyes. You didn’t know why, but your heart hurt as you saw Junhyung in pain. Once the both of you reached the hospital, Junhyung was pushed into the operation room, and some nurses brought you to the emergency ward to bandage your wounds.
As the nurses finished bandaging your wounds and led you to a seat to wait for your medicine, all you could think about was Junhyung. Once they left you, you ran off to the operation room where Junhyung was. It was quiet in the hospital, especially at the corridor where you were waiting. You couldn’t stand it any longer.
You took out your phone, thinking of who to call for help. You wanted to call Kevin, but somehow you knew that Junhyung didn’t like him a lot. So you decided to call Doojoon instead. After you told him that Junhyung was in the operation room, Doojoon said he’d rush over and put down the phone.
After another 10 minutes, you saw Doojoon running towards you, with a really worried look on his face. He slumped down beside you and tried to catch his breath. You filled him in with the details and starting crying again as you reached the part where Junhyung came to protect you.
Doojoon put his arm around you, and let you snuggle into him as you cried. He was worried about his best friend as much as you were, but he didn’t show it much. After a while, you stopped crying. ‘Go wash your face. And don’t wet your wounds.’ Doojoon reminded you. ‘I’ll go get your medicine and some drinks.’ He managed a little smile, and left after you went to the toilet.
When you were done washing your face and went back to the corridor, Doojoon was talking to the doctor. You ran over, listening to their conversation. ‘His wound was quite deep… lost a lot of blood… should’ve hurt a lot… strong guy… safe for now… can’t do large movements… moving him to the room…’ That was all you could make out.
You felt dizzy. You were happy that Junhyung was safe, but at the same time, guilty, because you put him through so much pain. After Doojoon was done talking with the doctor, the doctor turned towards you.
‘Which one of you is his family member? I need you to fill in a few forms and pay the bill.’ ‘Excuse me, the patient inside doesn’t have any family members, and we’re the two that are closest to him.’ You spoke up. The doctor frowned a little. ‘Then is he going to pay for himself?’ The doctor asked.
‘I’ll pay for him.’ You said calmly. Doojoon looked at you. ‘It’s not cheap.’ He said. ‘Does he have insurance?’ The doctor said again. ‘No.’ Doojoon said firmly. ‘Okay, so you can go to the counter to fill up the forms. Payments will be made when he leaves the hospital.’ ‘Okay.’ The doctor left.
‘Doojoonie ah. You follow Junhyung to the room first, okay? I’ll go fill the forms.’ He looked at you. ‘You okay?’ He felt that you were a little… different from usual. ‘I’m fine.’ You forced a smile on your face. You weren’t fine at all. You didn’t know where to get the money, your whole body hurt, you felt really guilty, and you were tired.
You walked towards the counter, as Doojoon waited outside for Junhyung to be pushed into his room.
Once Junhyung was pushed out of the operation theater, Doojoon walked forward. Junhyung had his eyes closed, but he opened it as he was pushed into the elevator. The nurse said, ‘The medicine just weared off not long ago, so he should still be a little dazy.’ Doojoon looked at him. He closed his eyes again, blinking from the bright lights.
Once they reached the room, the nurses transferred him to the bed in ward. He was in a single room. ‘The doctor will come around later. You can stay with him for now.’ The nurse said and went out. Doojoon sat down beside him. ‘You okay?’ Doojoon said quietly. Junhyung frowned a little. ‘I’m… fine.’
Doojoon chuckled. ‘Still trying to act tough, huh.’ Junhyung smiled. After that, the both of them just kept quiet. Doojoon was thinking about the money, and Junhyung was just resting. When you opened the door, the both of them turned to look at you.
‘Junhyunggie…’ When you were outside the ward, you already promised yourself not to cry, but as you saw him, you couldn’t control the tears that started to roll down your cheeks. You walked towards him, rubbing the tears.
He smiled, and sat up slowly, wincing. Then, he reached his hand forward to wipe your face. ‘I’m fine, don’t cry.’ His gentle voice said. You sat on the side of his bed, and without any notice, you just hugged him tightly, while sobbing. He was taken aback and his wound hurt, but he hugged you back anyway.
That night, you stayed with Junhyung in the hospital. Doojoon left around midnight, and headed over to the shop where Junhyung worked to inform them that he wouldn’t be coming to work for a couple of days. Dongwoon, Hyunseung, and IU came, but they only stayed for a while. Dongwoon brought you and Junhyung some toothbrushes, clothes and other daily needs.
After all of them left, you sat at the couch near Junhyung’s bed. He was flipping through a magazine, obviously bored. You asked him to sleep, but he couldn’t, because he just wasn’t used to sleeping so ‘early’, as he usually had to work.
‘Junhyunggie… There’s this thing that I’ve always wanted to ask you…’ You looked up from one of the magazines, and said timidly. ‘Mmm, what is it?’ Junhyung was looking at some watch on the page of the magazine, and he didn’t look up.
‘Uhmm…’ You hesitated. You didn’t want this to lead to somewhere bad. ‘Is there something bothering you?’ Junhyung sensed something weird, and this time, he looked up. ‘It’s nothing… just… I was wondering… Do you know that girl? That… Goo Hara.’ Junhyung flinched a little at her name.
‘Yes.’ He said straight forwardly. ‘And… I think I owe you an apology. Hara was probably attacking you because of me. I’m really sorry.’ Now, Junhyung got you even more messed up. What did this have to do with him? Oh wait… you thought. Hara said something when she was attacking you just now…
‘Anyone that messes with my boy, deserves a little punishment!’ Those words rang in your head. ‘My… my boy?’
