A Hundred Days

Whistling a happy tune, Wu Fan grabbed his pen and continued finishing what he ought to have finished few days ago. He was in good mood, alright, and nothing was going to stop him from being pleased. It must have been because of the lunchbox Soojin had brought. Or maybe it’s because he was just so hungry that he didn’t have energy to be as happy as he is now a while ago.

Carefully, he took a quick peek at Soojin, wondering what she’s doing. He let out a chuckle at the sight of her giving so much attention to the present he gave her. It amused him on how the smallest thing could make her that happy. In fact, it was the first time for Wu Fan to see someone like that.

Soojin puffed her cheeks and bit her lip, an intense look shading her face. She was holding the phone with such forethought as if it was going to fall any minute. Unable to contain it, he chuckled.

That got Soojin’s attention. She looked up quickly. “Did you say something?”

Wu Fan shook his head speedily, scared that he has been caught or whatsoever. “N-no!” he answered, stammering. “I mean… I did. Go get me some coffee.”

She nodded, getting to her feet right away. “If it takes me longer to get back, that means I’m distracted,” she says before disappearing. She muttered something else but not loud enough for Wu Fan to hear it. Although he understood few of the words like office is boring, he couldn’t help but chuckle.

Wu Fan leaned back, his eyes landed on the jaded, silver-looking ceiling of his office. He couldn’t help but feel rather good today. He doesn’t know whether it was because of Soojin, or her amusing behavior or the lunchbox she gave him.

Well, she didn’t really give it to him. He was so interested in it that he got it without having to ask. It was Soojin who willingly offered it to him instead.

And it wasn’t because he was hungry. Looking at the lunchbox reminds him of his mother. His mother who used to make him lunchboxes, too, when he was a kid. When he was still in nursery school, his mother would stay with him as long as he wanted her to stay. She’d sit with the other mothers, who devote themselves into taking care of their kids, and watch him from afar.

When he entered middle school, his mother had stopped coming to school. But she provides him homemade lunchboxes every morning and kisses him on the forehead. To make up for the constant absences of his father, his mother tries her best to be there for him.

High school came by so fast; Wu Fan didn’t see it coming. His father had made the surprise announcement of moving to Seoul for their business expansion. He didn’t like the idea but what can he do? He’s supposed to follow along to his father’s wishes.

And it was when changes begin to happen.

His father barely goes home. His mother has gradually become eventful that she hardly asks him how he was. Their house was bigger and prettier now but he’s never felt so alone. The house could be one of the most beautiful houses in Seoul but it was empty. His parents weren’t around anymore. The home-based lunchboxes were gone. Her mother was gone. Her father has eventually become estranged to Wu Fan.

He misses it. He misses it so much. Maybe too much.

It’s been ten minutes since he requested Soojin to bring him a coffee and she’s not even here yet. He had thought that she was fooling around and would really come back soon. But seeing as how it’s taking her so long to get the coffee, she was resolute about not coming back in a little while.

Grabbing his phone, he clicked speed dial one. He didn’t have any other reason about having her in speed dial one but because she’s his secretary.

“Yah, where are you?” he asked as soon Soojin answered.

“Oh, wow,” Soojin spoke from the other line. “The ringtone surprised me.”

“Where are you?” Wu Fan repeated, ignoring what she said. “Where’s my coffee?”

He could hear Soojin groan in disagreement. “I got your coffee like you wanted,” she told her. He could imagine her puckering her lips, something she does when she’s annoyed. He actually finds it rather cute. “But they’re not letting me in. They think I’m lying when I said I’m your private assistant.”

He snorted. “Of course, it’s because of what you’re wearing.” He lets out a sigh. “Stay there. I’m coming down.”

He hung up, pushing himself off his seat in one swift manner. Grabbing his coat, he went for the door, deciding on what to do for today. He can’t even believe it himself that he was going to do it but he had no choice. If Soojin was going to be his private assistant for a hundred days, she needs to change her style. Groaning inwardly, he did a double take, trying to figure out whether helping her would actually make sense to him.

Because the last time he checked, being helpful wasn’t really in his dictionary.

In the end, he found himself leaving anyway. He wanted to scream at himself. He wanted to smack his head and ask why it’s not working so well. But he still tried to reason out his screaming uncertainties by putting his work as top priority. I’m not trying to help her, he pondered, smacking his lips together. I’m trying to help myself. If I want a good reputation, then I better know how to dress my assistant up like a professional.

That was enough to convince himself. At least for now.

When Song Qian noticed him coming out of his office, she immediately stood up. I think it has become her habit ever since she started working. She always looked scared and she stutters a lot when she’s talking to him. Wu Fan begins to wonder if he was really that scary to make his secretary tremble in fear. It seemed incredulous.

“Cancel the rest of my schedule for today,” he declared, wearing his coat. He noticed how few of the employees popped their heads up as if they were listening. “If anyone calls, make sure you write them down on a note.”

Wu Fan lost count on how many times he said that last line. Whenever he has to go somewhere—personal reasons or when he just wants to relax—he uses that line. But he never really gets the note from her. Even if he gets it, he never reads it anyway.

When he met Luhan along the way, along with his wife, Yoona, he gave a brief bow. Always the curious one, Luhan asks where he’s going and Wu Fan answers him with nothing but a brief, cold ‘Somewhere’. People who don’t know Wu Fan would start to think on how rude he is but to Luhan, he knew Wu Fan was up to something interesting.

Luhan gave Wu Fan a brief nudge on the arm, chuckling when he whispered, “Spill the details later, President Kris.”

And sometimes, Wu Fan would deliberate whether Luhan is really a man or just a woman inside a man’s body. He’s more curious and a gossipmonger than most female employees in the company.

Chapter 25: That's hard and probably awkward. I probably don't wanna see them. The guy you love with the girl he's supposed to marry, even if he doesn't love her. That's really heartbreaking.
