Counting Her Days

“So let’s go.” Hyunseung stated, helping me stand as a slid his left arm around my waist, holding me up, While Dr. Park went to another room to tend another patient.

“Oppa, I can walk and I’m heavy. You should save your energy.” I muttered, turning slightly pink.

“What difference does it make? I used to give you piggy backs before.” He replied, slowly walking forward.

“Yeah, and you used to like giving them to Hyuna more.” I retorted.

“Well, that’s because I had a crush on you before! And I was shy whenever I would be around you.” I froze and he seemed to notice that. He used to like me? Plain old me?

“Are you okay?” He asked. I breathed a silent sigh.

“Yeah, my ribs just hurt.” I replied, feeling downcast for some reason.

“Okay, be careful next time, what happened anyway?” He asked and I felt my panic start once again. I couldn’t tell him the way I’m being treated because for sure he’ll be pissed and probably make a scene.

“Hyunseung! Take care of my baby girl cause If I see another bruise on her I will literally rip your hands off arasso?” Hara asked, giving Oppa a stern glare.

I silently gave Hara a silent thank you, happy that she understood me well.

“Yes ma’am!” He returned with a mock salute, I rolled my eyes; then Hara returned the smile and went out to help Dr. Park.

“Seung-ah! Take care of her because I won’t be with you when you’ll be going back.” I snapped my head towards Yubin unnie who stood up carrying her things.

“Eh ? Where are you going unnie?” I asked, standing a little straighter giving a bit distance from me and Hyunseung oppa but she pulled me closer.

“I’m going to drop by my son’s apartment.”

“You have a son?” I asked, surprised with the sudden information.

“Yes, he was out of the country with his father and now he’s back.” Yubin unnie said.

I merely nodded my head, once again feeling like the life has been drained out from me.

Then it hit me.

Where do I go?

I glanced at the clock and saw that only 3 hours passed. The party isn’t over yet.

“Uh, Hyunseung oppa, you go ahead, I’ll just-uh rest here first.” I said pulling away from him, walking crookedly back to the bed.

“What? Wae?” He asked, staring at me.

I glanced toward Yubin unnie then at the clock, silently telling her I couldn’t go back to the house yet. It’s going to end in a disaster.

Luckily she understood.

“Ah! I forgot! I told my son he’d be meeting JiYeon today. Mianhe seung-ah!”

“But you won’t be there for the party-wait do they even know you’re here?”

I didn’t answer him

“Oppa, how’d you know I was here by the way?” I asked, changing the topic.

“Oh, I needed a health certificate for some application forms and this was the nearest clinic to my apartment, I went in and saw Yubin unnie with tears, I asked her and she told me you were here.”

“Ah.” Was all I said before I shooed him out.

“Oppa! You go now, you know how Hyuna hates it when people are late!” I said.

“Arrasso, it seems like you really want me to go, I’ll leave now! Annyeong!” He gave me a kiss on the forehead and left the clinic. I glanced at Yubin unnie only to see her smile at me knowingly which I rolled my eyes to.

“Don’t even say it.” I muttered, limping lightly back towards the bed.

“I didn’t say anything.” She replied, smirking at me.

“Unnie!”

“What? I’m just smiling at you!” She made an excuse then gathered her things.

“Okay, let’s go! I wouldn’t want my son to be waiting!”

“Uh, Unnie are you sure it’s okay for me to join you? I mean isn’t this your big reunion?” I asked, feeling like I’m intruding.

“You’re family Ji Yeon! Plus I’m sure my son would love you!” She said.

“If you say so.” I replied still sounding a bit hesitant.

The ride towards Yu bin unnie’s son’s apartment was filled with questions, me asking while her answering.

I found out the her son’s name is Doojoon, he is 21 years old two years my senior, not very welcoming at first but will come around eventually.

Honestly, he sounds intimidating to me.

“Ji Yeon-ah, we’re here.” Yu Bin unnie announced, opening the cab for her to get out.

I trailed after her and stared at the building before me. It was painted orange with a white stripes, looking like the striped highlighted every floor and It looked liked it had about twenty-five floors.

“Ji Yeon? What are doing staring at a building like you haven’t seen one at all?” Yu Bin unnie asked; laughing at her own joke, She entered the building, and headed to the elevator with me hot on her heels.

“Unnie, are you sure you don’t want some alone time with your son? I mean I could wait out here. I really don’t mind.” I asked, for the second time as the elevator slowly descended.

“AISH, I said I was sure and I bet he already has some friends over.”

The elevator dinged open and I stood aside as some people went out.

“Unnie, are you sure?” I asked again.

“YAH! If you ask one more time, I will literally throw you in the Han river.” Unnie threatened.

I immediately shut my mouth, knowing to take her threats seriously.

Too soon, the elevator reached the 15th floor and it was time to get out.

“Uh-“ I stood frozen for a minute, I really felt like something bad was going happen, but then again with me around, it’s impossible for everything to be perfect.

“AISH! Come on!” Unnie urged and pulled me out of the elevator herself before it had a chance to close.

“Go on, knock.” Unnie ordered.

“Me?” I asked, pointing to myself.

“No, I’m talking to a ghost, of course you!” She said sarcastically, but before I even had a chance to raise my fist to knowck, the door opened to reveal a very very very handsome boy.

“Uh… hi?” I asked with an unsure smile, my cheeks burning up with embarrassment when I noticed my hand was still frozen in mid-air.

“Annyeong! What do you- Ommeonni!!!!” The boy, who I assumed was Doojoon, launched himself into Unnie’s arms, making her stumble a few steps back.

“Aigoo! Gikwang how are you!?” She asked, and immediately rushed inside the apartment forgetting about me.

Okay, so maybe he isn’t Doojoon.

“Doojoon-ah!” Unnie yelled, the minute she stepped in. I was still outside, once again hesitating.

“Are you coming in or are you just going to keep staring at my ?” The guy named Gikwang asked. I raised my eyebrows toward him.

He thought I was staring at his ?

“Ah, You’re one of the serious ones.” He stated then his left hand out.

“I’m Lee Gikwang! Nice to meet you!” He introduced himself and smiled at me, showing perfectly white teeth and a little dimple.

“I’m Ji Yeon and I guess it’s nice to meet you too.” I replied, shaking his hand.

“You guess?” He asked.

I rolled my eyes.

“It’s nice to meet you too.” I repeated and couldn’t help but smile at his expression.

“Who’s that?” A deep voice sounded from my right, I turned my head and was met with dark brown orbs that were staring at me with so much intensity that I thought I’d fall.

“YAH! YOON DOOJOON DON’T SCARE HER!” Unnie said, slapping her son’s muscular arm.

He ignored her.

“Who are you?” He continued, making his way towards me. I unconsciously took a step back, bumping into Gikwang who immediately pulled me behind him.

“Yah, Hyung you’re scaring her! I swear I will never get a girlfriend if you keep arriving and scaring them the minute I try to get to know them!” Gikwang whined stomping his foot like a child.

I couldn’t help but laugh, I looked up and locked eyes with Doojoon once again, only this time, I can see the corner of his lips tilt up; Almost like he was smiling.

Then it was gone.

“Omma, Kwangie, can you please buy groceries?” Doojoon asked, not waiting for their answer and walked towards the front door.

“Why can’t you do it yourself!?” Gikwang asked.

“Because  don’t want to.” Doojoon replied simply.

Yubin unnie who was unpacking some of her things during the whole exchange finally spoke.

“Arasso, I need to get some toiletries too. Ji Yeon, I have your medications, I’ll get you your medicines too and you rest here arasso?” I saw Doojoon take a deep breath like he was trying to control his temper and I nodded.

“Why can’t she come with us?” Gikwang asked with a pout.

“Because, she’s tired.” Yu Bin unnie said, then dragged Gikwang out of the house but not before telling Doojoon to take care of me.

Once they were out, everything turned tense. Not even awkward. It was literally tense, like Doojoon was going to kill me any second now.

“Shouldn’t you be in your mansion?” Doojoon asked, with cold eyes and leaned on the wall, his muscles shirt, hiking up at the biceps.

I didn’t answer, instead I looked down.

“I’m talking to you.” Doojoon said, coming near me, tilting my chin up.

“”No, I shouldn’t be in my mansion.” I answered, my voice breaking at the end.

“So, you choose to be here and ruin the time I have with my mother?” I knew it. I knew I was intruding.

“Sorry, I-I told Yu Bin unnie I didn’t want to intrude bu-“

“So, now you’re blaming my mother? It’s natural for her to say it’s okay! She practically works for you!” He screamed, making me flinch at the iciness in his tone.

“I-I’m sorry.” I took a step back and raised my arms, to protect me in case he was going to hit me.

A tear fell from my eye as I looked back up at him.

“I-I- I’ll leave as soon as Yu Bin unnie comes back, I promise.” He took a step forward, his gaze softening. I took a step back, still in my protective position; didn’t notice the bag Yubin unnie dropped and tripped. Luckily, he caught me before I could face plant and pressed me against him, holding my waist tight, making me flinch at the sudden contact.

“Ah.” I whimpered and bent forward, pushing him away from me.

“Are you okay?” He asked, bending down to see me.

No I’m not okay. That’s what I wanted to say but instead, I nodded my head and stood up but I couldn’t. There was a new pain near on my stomach and I felt like I was burning.

“Ah.” I whimpered again. Without thinking, Doojoon sweeped me off my feet like I don’t even weigh a pound and placed me on the couch, his face void of any emotion.

“Lift your shirt.” He ordered.

“What?”

“Just do it.” He demanded.

“No.” I replied sternly. Is he stupid? I am not letting anyone see my fat.

“Just lift your damn shirt up, It’s not like I’m going to you. You’re not even worth .” I snapped my head towards him and glared.

“Yah, just because I’m fat doesn’t mean-“

“Just shut up, no one fat girls- know what? Let me do it!” Before I could protest, he lifted my shirt up and I looked away, feeling embarrassed.

“Who did this?” His voice sounded harsh. Cold. Loathing.

“I- No one I tripped.” I answered, not looking at him.

“Liar.” That one word made a bundle of emotions stir in me. He knew I was lying?

“I-I’m not lying.”

“I don’t believe you Ji Yeon. Just, please tell me.” He said, softly, inhaling then exhaling like how he did a while ago.

“My- my dad.” I stated, looking down.

“YOUR DAD DID THIS!?” He asked, looking incredulous.

“I-I’m used to it.” I flinched once again, shying away form him.

“That’s why my mom protects you so much.” He muttered talking to himself more than me.

“Were you jealous?” I asked.

“That’s why she cuts her vacation short.” He continued and ignored me once again.

He chuckled dryly then looked at me.

“Very. I was very jealous. I thought she chose you over me. If only I knew.” He shook his head and looked down.

“Is that why you hate me?” I asked.

“I don’t hate you, like you said, I was just jealous.”

“Does your father do this a lot?” He asked.

“I-”

“Don’t you dare lie.” He demanded.

“Yes.” Then for the first time in my life, I broke down crying.
