Chapter 26

As I Am

“Okay, what about this?” Rhythm pulled a dress off from the rack and showed it to Sarang and Minsung who shook their heads. Rhythm put the dress back onto the rack and threw her hands up.

“I give up. You two are impossible,” Rhythm went and sat down on a chair, tired from hours of going through boutiques and shopping for a dress for an event that Sarang had coming up.

“It’s not that hard, noona. But the dress wasn’t black. And Sarang always wears black for these events.”

“Look, I like black as much as the next person but why always black? Sarang would look so much better in something other than black. I picked out some cute dresses but because they weren’t black, they were rejected. I call bull!” Rhythm snapped, crossing her arms in front of her.

“Rhythm, are you hungry?” Sarang didn’t even spare the girl a glance as she combed through the rack of dresses, trying to find something that would be appropriate for brunch.

“Yes! Starving!” Sarang and Minsung shared a look before going back to dress searching.

“We’ll go eat right now. Let’s just finish looking through this rack and then we’ll go,” Minsung pulled out a dress and showed it to Sarang. She studied it for a bit before shrugging.

“Ugh! Can you be any slower? I’m hungry!” Rhythm whined.

“Jiwoo doesn’t even act like this,” Sarang informed her with a bit of laughter in her voice. Rhythm just whined even more, saying she didn’t care how Jiwoo didn’t or did act.

“Fine! Minsung, hand me the dress you just pulled out. I’ll get that,” Sarang took the dress Minsung handed her before going over to the check out counter.

Rhythm let out a happy yell and quickly followed after Sarang.

“Next time I’m just going to carry snacks with me,” was all Minsung muttered as he followed after the oldest of the group.

The trio finally left the boutique and hurried to the nearest restaurant.

“So tell me again why you always wear black to events that your family gets invited to?” Rhythm asked as the three ate lunch.

Sarang just shrugged as she picked at her own dish, “I don’t know. It’s just something the four of us have always done. Ever since I was little, we’d all worn black, regardless of the event. If the four of us had to show up, black was our color.”

“It’s the Shin family signature color,” Minsung added in, having witnessed firsthand the family’s fashion choices.

“I still think other colors would look just as great on you but whatever,” Rhythm mumbled, still a bit annoyed at her rejected dresses due to the fact that they weren’t black.

Jiwoo sat on his noona’s bed as he watched her go through a jewelry box and take out a few pieces of jewelry here and there before putting it back into the box. Sarang had been watching Jiwoo since this morning—both Sangdo and Hyosang were out of town and it was finals week for Sangwon—and the two had just gotten home from their day at the zoo. Sarang expected Jiwoo to fall asleep soon, judging by how he was currently fighting his drooping eyes but according to him, he wasn’t sleepy and wanted to see what his noona was doing.

“I like that necklace, noona,” Jiwoo said about the necklace that Sarang had just taken out.

“You do?” Sarang let out a light laugh as she saw Jiwoo slowly nod his head. She placed the necklace carefully on the bed.

“Alright. If Jiwoo says the necklace is nice, then the necklace is nice.”

“What are you looking through jewelry for?” Jiwoo asked, deciding to lie down instead of sitting up.

“I have to go somewhere tomorrow and I need to be dressed nice,” Sarang explained as she began rifling through the jewelry box for pieces that would go with the necklace.

“Is that why your nails are painted?” Jiwoo wondered, lazily lifting a hand to reach for one of Sarang’s.

Sarang grinned as she held a hand out to the little boy who placed the hand on top of his back.

“I like the color blue, noona,” Jiwoo mumbled with a yawn as Sarang patted his back, lulling him to sleep.

Sarang looked at her nails, examining the color she had them painted. She looked back at Jiwoo who had finally gone to sleep and smiled a soft smile. Sarang ruffled his hair before going back to looking through the box. When Sarang finished, she carefully picked up Jiwoo and carried him to the room she had fixed for him and laid him on the bed, putting a light blanket over him. She went to her living room, planning to unwind and mentally prepare herself for tomorrow when the doorbell rang. Sarang opened the door and couldn’t help but smile when she saw Sanggyun.

“Hey. I forgot to text you that I was on my way and when I remembered, I was here already,” Sanggyun explained, stepping into the apartment when Sarang moved off to the side.

“It’s fine. Can I get you anything to drink? Jiwoo is asleep,” Sarang said, all in one breath. She cursed herself in her mind, wishing she wouldn’t be so awkward around Sanggyun. Four years and he still keeps her from sounding like a normal human being.

“Water, please. And he is? I guess you two had a busy day,” Sanggyun chuckled as he followed Sarang to the kitchen.

Sanggyun couldn’t help but look around in awe. He’s been to the apartment already but it still surprised him by how nice it was.

“I finally took him to the zoo. I didn’t get to take him a few weeks ago and I had promised him I would,” Sarang poured Sanggyun a glass of water.

“He’s gone so many times before. Sangwon always takes him. I don’t think he’ll ever grow tired of that place,” Sanggyun and Sarang both shared a laugh.

“Oh! I got something for you,” Sanggyun jolted a little, surprised by Sarang’s exclamation. He followed her when she simply said ‘follow me’ as she hurried past him.

The two went up the stairs and to her bedroom. Sanggyun stopped at the doorway instead of going fully into her room.

“I was going through my closet and I found this in the back. I’ve been meaning to give it to you but I keep forgetting,” Sarang explained as she pulled out a hanger from her closet.

Sanggyun peeked his head into the room and saw the blazer in her hand, “My jacket.”

Sanggyun stepped into the room, Sarang holding the blazer out to him with a small smile on her face.

“Sorry I kept it for so long,” Sanggyun chuckled as he took the piece of clothing from her.

“That night was something,” Sanggyun quietly said as he examined the jacket, still in the plastic from being dry cleaned.

Sarang looked up at him, trying to keep from blushing. She began to rub her arms as she tried to think of something to say.

“Are you cold?” Sanggyun wondered, taking notice of Sarang’s actions.

“No. I’m not cold,” Sarang was quick to drop her arms as if her hands had been burned.

Sanggyun studied her expression, “Thank you, again. For that night.”

Sarang ducked her head, having grown shy, “Don’t mention it. It was nothing.”

Sanggyun wanted to push it further but didn’t get a chance to when Jiwoo walked in.

“Noona? Appa?” The two looked at the little boy who was rubbing his eyes.

“Hey, bud.” Sanggyun smiled at his son, opening his arms, Sarang taking his jacket from him.

Jiwoo trudged over to his dad, lifting his own arms and being picked up by his dad, “We should probably get going. I need to figure out what to make for dinner before hyung gets off of work.”

Sarang entered the formal dining room flanked by her brothers, their father leading the way. They were at the house of a colleague’s of their father who was holding a brunch type event in honor of something. Sarang wasn’t too sure, she just knows that she had to show face since it was a family event. Other people and their families had also been invited and it made Sarang question why they didn’t hold this event at a restaurant instead. It felt too crowded and personal for her liking.

“Sungwoo! You’ve made it!” The host of the event approached them with open arms and a wide smile, his wife by his side.

Sungwoo greeted the two, the kids bowing to the couple. As usual, they were praised for their good looks, Sungwoo laughing at the compliments before complimenting their own children who were somewhere in the crowd.

“Go mingle, my children. Jiho, stick with me,” Sungwoo instructed.

Jiho moved to stand next to him while Yooncheol and Sarang stuck together.

“Be good,” Sungwoo called out to the two as they turned to walk away.

“Of course, dad,” Yooncheol called back.

“Who do you take us for?” Sarang added.

The brother and sister found a spot in the room and stayed there, sipping on a glass of water as they quietly talked. They would politely greet people who approached them but even early in the day, they kept their chic persona.

“Well, well, well. Seoul’s very own Addams Family,” Yooncheol muttered a ‘down, girl’ to his sister as the owner of the voice got closer.

“I thought it was going to be a good day when dad said that Aera wouldn’t be coming. Guess I thought wrong,” Sarang muttered before turning to face said owner.

“Jeon Hae-Ju. I would say it’s a lovely surprise running into you here but my father didn’t raise a liar,” Sarang stated.

Hae-Ju grinned a tight grin, “Shin Sarang. Shin Yooncheol. I saw your dunce of a brother earlier. I’m surprised he’s the one that’s going to take over the company after your father retires. I should’ve set my sights on him instead of you.”

Hae-Ju smirked at Yooncheol who tightened his grip on Sarang’s arm.

“And I should’ve set my efforts on breaking your neck instead of your nose,” Sarang hissed, trying to pull her arm away from Yooncheol.

“Real classy, Sarang. Go ahead, cause a scene. Show everyone your true colors. That it isn’t just headlines. Ruin the nice brunch that one of your father’s colleagues is throwing and ruin their business relationship,” Hae-Ju grinned, knowing she was getting a rise out of the youngest Shin.

“This is exactly what she wants, Sarang. Remember what you told me about Sanggyun and Jiwoo,” Yooncheol warned, only loud enough for Sarang to hear.

“She called Jiho oppa a dunce,” Sarang said through gritted teeth.

“Let her go, Yooncheol. All publicity is good publicity,” Hae-Ju sneered, “Maybe you’ll pay for my hospital bills this time.”

“That’s enough, Jeon Hae-Ju.”

“Ahhhh, and the Brady Bunch has decided to join the fun. Park Sehyuk. Park Se Hee. Kim Minsung. What are you three up to?”

“That’s enough, Jeon Hae-Ju,” Se Hee repeated her previous statement, calmer than the first, “Walk away and enjoy the rest of the event without a problem or you’ll be escorted out.”

“Do you let your little sister just call the shots or are you all bark and no bite?” Hae-Ju ignored Se Hee’s warning and turned to Sehyuk who just smirked at her, taking a sip of champagne from his glass.

“No need to give any attitude just because I refused to sleep with you,” Sehyuk chuckled.

“I know you heard me, Hae-Ju. Walk away or you’ll be escorted out,” Se Hee ordered.

“In other words; leave, ,” Minsung snapped.

Hae-Ju studied the group before letting out a huff and stomping away.

“Guess the devil really does wear Prada,” Yooncheol let out an ‘oomph’ when Sarang elbowed his stomach.

“Don’t sully the title of a good movie by using it on a like that.”

Chapter 26: Omo omo omo! You mess with Sarang, you mess with ALL her high class friends !!! Rather than Sarang wanting attention, it is that who wants attention... ppfft... I love Sarang's friends and brother ♡

Thanks for the update!!! I was waiting for it and now worries! Take a break if you need^^ I'll be here if you need me!!! Oh and something for you to note. Please either have two spaces or lines when it's the next scene cause it's confusing when it's only one enter. I was happily reading Sanggyun and Sarang then suddenly the scene change and there was no big difference of change and end up I need to read like twice or thrice to notice that it was a change of scene ^^||
