Chapter 21

As I Am

A/N Italics in this chapter represent a flashback. After this chapter, it will go back to representing English. Also, Girl's Day is queens and I love their music.

Sanggyun stood by the large gates of the high school and watched all the students as they walked out of the building. Some were in groups, some in pairs, some by themselves and Sanggyun couldn’t help but reminisce over his high school days. A small part of him still wishes he could’ve done things differently but every time he sees Jiwoo’s smile, hears his laugh, or just hear Jiwoo call him ‘appa’, that part of him grows smaller and smaller.

“Oppa!” “Hyung!” Sanggyun was pulled away from his thoughts by two specific voices.

“Sohee! Donghan!” Sanggyun broke into a wide grin, lifting a hand to wave at the two who hurried over to him.

“Ha! He said my name first!” Sohee, the only daughter and the youngest of the Kim family, stuck her tongue out at her older brother, the youngest son of the Kim family.

“I was born first anyways.” Donghan fired back. Sanggyun laughed at the two before throwing an arm around them each.

“I love you both equally so it doesn’t matter.” Sanggyun said, in hopes of preventing a fight from breaking out between them. It worked. Sohee smiled up at him before snuggling into his side while Donghan just felt happy to have at least one of his hyungs by his side again.

“You two hungry? We can eat before you two have to go to your cram school.” The two groaned at the mention of their cram school.

“Did you have to remind us, hyung?” Donghan wondered, feeling like he should just sprint in the other direction in hopes of not having to go.

“Yeah, oppa. I thought you were going to take us to meet our nephew?” Sohee pouted. Sanggyun sighed at this. Ever since Stacy’s visit last month, he’s been trying to be more involved in his little siblings' life again. Or as involved as he can be without their parents finding out and putting a stop to it. Prior to that, he had just been texting them and calling them and sending them pictures of Jiwoo.

“You know why I can’t do that, Sohee.” Sanggyun said. Sohee sighed this time, moving a bit away from Sanggyun.

“Okay, oppa.” Sohee began to pick up her pace so she was walking ahead. Sanggyun just frowned, halting to a stop. He’s never wanted to hurt his siblings but it was difficult. When he had told their parents about being a father, they had kicked him out of the house and refused to talk to him and didn’t allow Donghan or Sohee to contact him. The same thing had happened to Taeyang when he decided he didn’t want to follow their parents’ dreams for him and go to college. He instead wanted to pursue music but instead of being forced out, he left on his own, claiming to not want to live under a roof with parents who don’t support their child. Sanggyun, Donghan, and Sohee had been kept from contacting him when that happened.

“It’s been hard on her, hyung. You were the one she would always go to. We both were, actually. We love and miss Taeyang hyung but he was so much older than us. You tried your best to get to our level and when you had to leave, it was just us. Eomma and appa became stricter and it was harder to talk to them. We just miss having our family be complete and we hate not being able to meet our nephew. We hate having to do everything in secret.” Donghan explained, deciding to play the big brother role for his only sister and also be a form of comfort for his older brother.

“I know, Donghan. I know. It’s hard on us too. Taeyang hyung regrets not being a better brother to you two when he had the chance. I know he doesn’t reach out to you two as much but he just doesn’t know how. And Jiwoo asks about you two a lot. And eomma and appa. I just wish he was able to have at least one set of his grandparents. And I wish you and Sohee weren’t in the middle of all this drama. I’m sorry I haven’t been the best brother to you two.” Sanggyun apologized, trying to hold back the tears. Donghan didn’t say anything and just pulled him into a hug. The two brothers stayed like that for a bit until Sohee was sprinting back towards them.

“I just saw eomma’s car coming this way! Sanggyun oppa, hide!” She shrieked, looking back to make sure the car wasn’t close. Donghan pulled away from Sanggyun and shoved him into the store nearest to them before joining his sister on the sidewalk. The two stayed there, trying to figure out what else to do when the car finally appeared on the street.

“Act natural.” Donghan whispered to Sohee who just nodded her head. The instantly put on the biggest smiles possible when the car slowed to a stop at the side of the road and their mom got out.

“Why are you two not on your way to cram school?” Sohee and Donghan looked at each other, confused expressions on their faces.

“What do you mean, eomma? We’re on our way there?” Sohee said with a sweet smile.

“Yeah, eomma. We’re on our way.” Donghan added.

“Your cram school is in the other direction.” Their mom said, not believing her kids for one second. “Also, where is Sanggyun? I know he’s here with you two.” Sohee and Donghan gulped before grinning again.

“We haven’t talked to him in ages! We don’t know where he is or how he is?” Donghan exclaimed, Sohee elbowing him because his answer was way too over the top. Their mom sighed and rolled her eyes before rubbing the bridge of her nose.

“I may have been born at night, but not last night. I’ve seen the messages and I know you two have been in contact with him. I didn’t want to say anything but then you three planned to meet. So where is he?” Sohee and Donghan stayed quiet, not wanting to give away their brother.

“I can stand here all day if I have to.” Their mom snapped, causing them to flinch.

“We really don’t know what you’re talking about, eomma.” Donghan insisted, Sohee nodding her head. “Do not lie to me.”

“That’s enough, you guys. You don’t have to cover for me.” Donghan and Sohee snapped their heads to look at their brother who stepped out of the shop he had been shoved into. They watched as he walked over, standing between them and their mom. Sanggyun bowed deeply to their mom.

“Hello, eomma. It’s been a while.” Sanggyun greeted, keeping his head bowed as he straightened his body. Donghan and Sohee watched on quietly, scared of what their mom would do.

“Sanggyun. How have you been?” Their mom finally spoke up, her voice void of emotion.

“I’ve been well, eomma.” “And Taeyang? How is your brother?” All three were surprised at the mention of Taeyang. For the six years since he has left, Donghan and Sohee had never heard their parents mention Taeyang and when Sanggyun left four years ago, it was the same thing.

“He’s doing well, too. We’re sharing an apartment.” Sanggyun explained. Their mom was silent for a moment before sighing and stepping forward. Sanggyun flinched with her movement but tensed up when he felt her wrap her arms around him in a tight hug. He stayed tense for a few seconds before relaxing and hugging her back, just as tight.

“I’ve missed you both, so much.” He heard his mom say, voice thick with emotion and it was taking a lot for him to not cry.

“We’ve missed you too, eomma.” Sanggyun whispered, loud enough for her to hear. They finally pulled away from each other, but his mom didn’t let go of him. She kept a hold of his arms as she looked him over.

“You don’t look like you’re eating enough and I’m sure your brother isn’t either. Let’s meet up for lunch. All of us. When are you free?” Their mom spoke. Sanggyun was surprised by this. The hug was one thing but wanting to see them again was another.

“Hyung and I are off next Saturday.” But we had promised to spend it with Jiwoo, was what he wanted to add on but he was unsure of where his parents still stood with their grandson. Maybe if he worked them a bit, they would be more open with having a grandson.

“Perfect! What’s your number? I can text you the details!” Their mom happily said. Sanggyun gave her his number, looking at his siblings who were just as confused as them. “Great! I’ll text you! Tell Taeyang I say hello! Kids, get in. I’ll drive you to your cram school.” Sohee and Donghan stood still for a second, still confused about what had just happened before hugging their brother bye and getting in the car. Sanggyun stayed where he was, waving them off as their mom drove away before deciding to pick up Jiwoo early.

“I guess you were right when you said you heard eomma crying to halmoni. She really did feel guilty for six years but how does appa feel? Will he be okay with it? What if he-hey, are you crying?” Donghan was shocked to see that Sohee was indeed wiping away tears.

“I’m just really emotional after what happened, okay.” Sohee said, sniffling a bit. Donghan nodded his head, blinking his eyes in an attempt to keep his tears at bay. Their mom could be heard also crying and they ended up at their cram school with puffy eyes and tear-streaked faces.

Sarang laughed as she watched Jiwoo dramatically fall into the ball pit before springing back up and catching up with the friends he made at the kids’ café. She would take pictures or quick videos on her phone of him playing so she could send them to Sanggyun. Jiwoo happily yelled as he ran around with his friends, all of them playing a game that Sarang didn’t understand but enjoyed watching nonetheless. It made her entire being warm at just the thought of all these children getting the opportunity to live and grow like a normal child with no worries or stress.

“Hey, stranger.” Sarang jumped a little at the sound of Sanggyun’s voice as he sat next to her at the table she was at.

“Yah.” Sarang lamely warned before smiling at the newcomer. “How did it go with your…meeting?” That had been the excuse he had given her when he asked if she wouldn’t mind picking up Jiwoo in the afternoon. Sangwon had been watching Jiwoo in the morning but had to work later, Sangdo was currently out of town for the next few weeks, and Hyosang was working on new music so Sarang had been his last resort to watch Jiwoo.

“It went, okay. I was actually wondering if you could watch Jiwoo next Saturday.”

“I thought you and your brother were off next Saturday?” Sarang wondered.

“We are but something came up. If you can’t, that’s fine. I can just cancel.” Sanggyun quickly said.

“No, it’s fine. I can watch him. I just have a shoot later on that day. Around 5.” Sarang informed him.

“Perfect! We should be done around that time. Thank you so much, Sarang! Sangwon has finals coming up and on top of his regular job, he doesn’t get a lot of time to study, and Hyosang hyung has been working hard on his music and-“ “Sanggyun! It’s fine! I love spending time with Jiwoo, it’s no big deal.” Sarang laughed, cutting off Sanggyun’s rambling. He just chuckled sheepishly as he rubbed the back of his neck. His awkwardness went away when he heard an excited ‘appa!’ and he prepared himself for his son to come running and fling himself at him.

“Hey, Jiwoo! Are you having fun?” He asked but the bright eyes, wide smile, and red cheeks gave him all the answers he needed.

“Yeah, appa! I’m having so much fun! Are you coming with me and noona to get fruit after this?” Jiwoo wondered. Sanggyun laughed as he replied, “If it’s okay with noona.” Sarang smiled as she nodded her head.

“Of course it’s okay with me.” Jiwoo let out a cheer before kids calling his name caught his attention. He told Sarang and his dad that he needed to go before running back to his friends.

Later on, that night as Sanggyun got ready for bed, he couldn’t help but think over the day’s events. He was thankful for Sarang who briefly distracted him from the trip down memory lane that he had been on ever since seeing his mom again. But now it was just him and his thoughts. Jiwoo was asleep, as was Taeyang who went in early the next day.

14-year-old Sanggyun sat awake in his bed as he watched an 18-year-old Taeyang pack a bag, trying to be as quiet as possible since 11-year-old Donghan was currently sleeping. Sohee was lucky being the only girl since she was allowed her own room while the three boys had to share.

“Hyung, where are you going?” Sanggyun whispered as Taeyang dumped a handful of shirts into his bag. Taeyang didn’t answer and continued to go through the drawers and closet to grab whatever was his.

“Hyung” Sanggyun called a bit louder. “Where are you going?” Taeyang finally stopped and looked at Sanggyun.

“I’m leaving, Sanggyun. I can’t stay here anymore.” Taeyang answered.

“But why?” Sanggyun wondered as Taeyang went back to packing. “Is it because eomma and appa won’t let you do music?” Taeyang stopped once more and let out a sigh.

“I can’t live under a roof with people who refuse to support me.” Taeyang simply said, making sure he had everything before moving to close his bag.

“I support you, hyung.” Sanggyun replied. He noticed Taeyang stiffen before he made his way over to Sanggyun’s bed. Taeyang sat down and placed a hand on Sanggyun’s head.

“Sanggyun, promise me that you’ll take care of Donghan and Sohee. Be a good, no, a better big brother than me. I’m sorry it has to come to this but I’ll always be there for you, okay.” Sanggyun slowly nodded his head, not wanting Taeyang to move his hand and stay a bit longer. But it didn’t help. Taeyang ruffled his hair, stood up, grabbed his bag, fixed Donghan’s blankets that had messed up in his sleep, turn off the lamp in their room, and walked out the room. Sanggyun wanted to chase after him and try and stop him but he was too heartbroken to do anything. He couldn’t even speak against his parents the next morning when they ordered him, Donghan, and Sohee to never talk to Taeyang again and if they did, they would be in trouble.

“What do you mean you got a girl pregnant?” Sanggyun didn’t even try to hide his flinch when his dad slammed his hand down on the table.

“I don’t know what happened but we, and she, and now” Sanggyun struggled to speak through the lump growing in his throat and it was getting much more difficult to see his parents through the tears growing in his eyes.

“You are 16. How will you raise a baby?!” His mom yelled, tears in her eyes.

“He won’t raise a baby because there won’t be a baby.” His dad said, getting a gasp from Sanggyun.

“Appa, no. Appa!” Sanggyun exclaimed, not believing what his dad was suggesting.

“Either that or get out! I will not have this disgrace brought to my family.” His dad threatened. Sanggyun sat there for a moment, looking between his mom and dad before getting up and storming out of the house. He only looked back when he heard Sohee and Donghan call out for him but he didn’t stop and their brokenhearted expressions haunted him for months.

“Yah, what are you doing up still?” Sanggyun jumped when he heard Taeyang’s groggy voice.

“I was just…thinking.” Sanggyun simply said, looking down at his hands. He had moved from the bathroom to the table sometime during his trip down memory lane. Taeyang didn’t say anything as he went over and sat down with him.

“Let’s just go and see what they have to say. It has to be good if eomma reacted that way. We owe it to at least Donghan and Sohee. They’ve been stuck in the middle this entire time. If this goes good, then Jiwoo might be able to get that family you’ve always wanted for him. Now c’mon, you got work in the morning and need some sleep.”

A/N Okay, so I didn't really know how to start this chapter and Rani, a friend of mine, was like 'Make the chapter fluffy with Sanggyun and Sarang hanging out with Jiwoo' and I was like 'Great idea, Rani! I'll do that!' and then I started writing and this happened. There was a little bit of fluff but uh...yeah. Sorry, Rani. And sorry Y'all. Comments make me very, very, VERY happy!

Chapter 26: Omo omo omo! You mess with Sarang, you mess with ALL her high class friends !!! Rather than Sarang wanting attention, it is that who wants attention... ppfft... I love Sarang's friends and brother ♡

Thanks for the update!!! I was waiting for it and now worries! Take a break if you need^^ I'll be here if you need me!!! Oh and something for you to note. Please either have two spaces or lines when it's the next scene cause it's confusing when it's only one enter. I was happily reading Sanggyun and Sarang then suddenly the scene change and there was no big difference of change and end up I need to read like twice or thrice to notice that it was a change of scene ^^||
