ch. 10

Why Now?

"I've been having trouble sleeping...

The electric song echoed throughout the sweat-scented studio as the last of Moonbyul's trainees exited from the room while bidding her goodbye. The coach herself stood up against the mirror with her pressed up against it while the rest of her leaned forward, slouching, not giving a damn about her terrible posture.

"Goodbye, unnie! Good luck with the rookies today!" yelled one of Moonbyul's favourite students just before  leaving the room. Moonbyul chuckled to herself and sent a lazy wave.

"I'll try!" She retorted before pushing herself up by her heels and immediately turns herself around with a little twirl, throwing her arms up freely to stretch herself out. Moonbyul stared at herself in the mirror; eyes squinting at her own lanky reflection. It was hard to believe that within a span of only a month of coming back to Korea she had found her own place to settle in, gained her dream job and was in the midst of dating someone. It wasn't so often that her life was falling into place as easily as it was now and it scared Moonbyul.

She lived a life of complete independency and recklessness before coming back to Seoul and it was hard to believe that all of that was coming to an end. Sure, she was free to continue her travels, but with a serious job with many people counting on her and having someone that she genuinely liked in her life now it would be hard to escape the commitment.

Commitment.

Moonbyul hates the word. Well, hated. She always thought of herself as being a single woman for the rest of her life and not being able to find her true love to share her future experiences, but with Wheein around her nearly 24/7, it was hard to imagine a day without her. The little runt had grown on Moonbyul despite the messy introduction that they had to each other and the ecstatic personality that Wheein put out. Wheein was always energetic and attached while Moonbyul was usually isolated and relaxed, but now that they spent so much time together it felt as if Moonbyul's way of life was slowly shifting.

The blonde sighed and walked around in a circle, spinning her head to loosen her neck at the same time.

The image of her and Wheein's little argument about commitment flashed in her mind. Things had been a little awkward since then, considering the topic of their conversation was Yongsun.

"Cause all I think about is you.."

"How could Wheein ever think that I'd ever think of her like that?" She grumbled in her head, scrunching her hair up in her hands as she continued to walk in a small circle. "Yongsun is my best cousin's soon-to-be-wife. And her cousin. Of course I wouldn't have any weird thoughts about her...

Moonbyul stared at herself once more in the mirror, eyes narrowing at her twin. The long, wavy, chocolate locks popped into her head.

"No... thoughts."

Her eyes closed slowly as her head lulled to the side, letting her body follow in the same fluid motion as if the melody of the song was leading her entire body. Her legs lifted into the air and extended themselves, trailing behind her upper half and nearly caved underneath her as if she was about to fall but immediately caught her weight, and supported her into regaining her balance. Her arms flew and swung, only wanting to feel the air around her.

Dance was her escape; her therapy, her only method that fixed her stress, anger, anxiety, sadness. It was all that she knew that was concrete in her life; that it would be around for her to use at on any given day at any given moment. Starting from her youth, dance was her calling. Even if her parents disapproved she was determined to be a dancer and wouldn't settle for anything less. It began from hip hop to locking and popping to grooving and eventually it broke out to the elegant contemporary, lyrical and ballet. There was nothing about the sport that Moonbyul wouldn't try and she was always open to new and unique styles of dance. It was everything to her and if there ever came a day where she couldn't moonwalk or do a wave, God might as well take her then.

It was so easy for her to get lost within the movements and the music and it would feel as if it's only her and the tune. Those were the moments Moonbyul lived for. And that's exactly what was happening.

"Moonbyul?"

The blonde's eyes opened wide just as she was in the middle of going into a twist, suddenly losing her balance and sent her stumbling across the room. "Ohmanohmanohman-" She repeated as she tried to stop herself from flying into the cabinets, managing to fall onto her thigh before anything came into contact with her. She breathed out and pushed the hair out of her face while trying to get up from the floor. "I'm so sorry, hello--" Her vision finally became clear once every hair strand was out of her eyes, seeing Yongsun standing in shock in front of her.

Her eyes were wide as if she were a deer in front of headlights with the rest of her expression looking extremely confused and apologetic at the same time. "Sorry, I should've knocked!" She babbled and fiddled with the door. She was trying to get out of the situation as fast as she could and Moonbyul couldn't help herself but admit; it was a cute act. "I'll just go now, I am truly sorry-"

Moonbyul let out an embarrassing laugh and, from reflex, grabbed the other's wrist to stop her from leaving. "It's okay! It's cool! I was just... having a little freestyle party by myself." She tried to offer Yongsun the most confident smile, but with her red ears and rosy cheeks, it was a little hard to pull off.

Yongsun bit her lip gently before letting go of the handle and took steps into the studio, letting Moonbyul pull her deeper into the room, tapping the door closed behind her. "I really am sorry. I heard music but... I thought you were just hanging out." The other clicked her tongue and waved her hand back and forth in the air in front of her face as if she was diminishing an imaginary bubble.

"Don't worry about it. I was messing around. Seriously." Moonbyul grinned and pulled her phone out with her free hand to control the stereos, lowering the volume of the low tune that she was previously dancing to. "So; what brings you to my sweaty abode?"

Yongsun slowly pulled her wrist from Moonbyul's grip just before she replied. Moonbyul hadn't even noticed that she was still holding onto the girl's wrist. Her eyes stared at her arm as the other brought it back to the side of her body, but immediately looked back at her face. "So tiny..."

"Well, it is lunch and I don't have any other friends here yet except for you! And so, I brought us a little somethin'.." Yongsun's eyes turned into crescents and immediately lifted her other arm to reveal a sealed box of deep fried, boneless chicken and an extra bag from the convenience store with a pop bottle inside. "Let's have lunch?"

Moonbyul's jaw nearly dropped. "...you're the reason why I can't go on a diet these days."

"Admit it. You love greasy, delicious junk food." Yongsun stuck her tongue out and plopped her down onto the floor to set up their tiny indoor picnic.

"Shut up, Kim Yongsun." The other scoffed and sat down as well with an intense, eager expression on her face. Eating lunch together was something that they did nearly every day and if they weren't able to get lunch, one of them would end up in the other's rooms by the end of the day to give each other a snack. Food was a staple in their new friendship, and a day without eating with each other wasn't a true work day.

Moonbyul enjoyed the extra company, considering she had spent the last couple years of her lives eating mostly alone no matter where she went. Sure, she dated often but did she ever truly carry on a friendship with someone that she hooked up with in a foreign country? Not a chance.

"So, guess who I saw today walkin' around with Junghwan?" Yongsun said in a hushed tone as if it helped to keep her revealing of a secret still discreet, unhooking the lock contraption on the both.

"Oooooh, lemme guess... Heeyeon?" replied Moonbyul with a lift of her brow.

The other's tongue clicked. "Nailed it. Poor Heeyeonie... Junghwan's gonna break her heart."

"No worries. I can rush in and sweep her off her feet at the same time." Moonbyul said with a giggle and opened up her pack of chopstics, seperating them from each other before using them to pick up a piece of the beautiful, golden chicken.

Yongsun rolled her eyes while breaking apart her own pair of utensils. "You're gross. Keep your eyes on my cousin."

"No promises." The blonde replied with one more chuckle as she chewed on ther chicken. It still shocked Moonbyul, to this day, that she ever thought that her and Yongsun couldn't develop a friendship. Their relationship with each other went from awkward strangers to attached-at-the-hip work buddies in a matter of weeks and it was clear to her now why Minhyuk had fallen in love with her. Everything about her was so different than what it seemed; her mature and sophisticated appearance was nearly the opposite from her quirky personality. It wasn't often that Moonbyul found herself actually enjoying the prescence of any of her favourite cousin's significant others, but with the way that things were playing out now, she didn't want Yongsun to ever move away from the company.

Yongsun looked around the studio as she took a swig of soda from the plastic bottle, intruiged by the completely different atmosphere of the room. Inside here it was steamy and loud whereas her office was usually completely silent and relaxed. "You had a class in here right before this?"

Moonbyul reached out to the other and repeatedly closed and opened her palm, signaling that she wanted to bottle as well. It was nice how comfortable they had gotten with each other, the blonde thought, as they were even sharing drinks between each other. "Mhm," She mumbled as she put her lips to the plastic, taking a sip as well. "Why?"

The engaged lady looked at her with narrowed eyes before kicking off her ankle boots to the side and pushed herself up from the floor, clapping twice as she stood. "Teach me something!"

Moonbyul's brows furrowed. "You can dance?"

"Pft," Yongsun scoffed as she shook her head, placing her hands on her hips. "No way. But, I would like to learn from the best!"

The other stared at her for a moment as if she was crazy, and mostly because Moonbyul was way too full and tired to even stand up. Yongsun wouldn't take that from her and immediately came over to grab her arms to force her from her spot. "C'mon, you're teaching me and you can't get out of it!"

Moonbyul groaned out of habit, but caved in. It wouldn't be too bad; she'd give her an easy piece. "Alright, fine! You can be my guinea pig. I've been in the middle of making a partner piece for the older trainees." She mumbled and pushed Yongsun over a bit to give the both of them space. She looked up to see the other staring at her with a gleaming smile and Moonbyul couldn't help but smile back. There was something about Yongsun's smile that was so contagious. "Stop looking at me like that! Okay- we're gonna step to the side," Moonbyul said and situated her body to the right. "And then you're gonna sort of... sink your stomach in."

"Ah, so like this?" Yongsun followed the same move that Moonbyul did but in the most awkward and inflexible way that the dancer had ever seen. Moonbyul bursted out into laughter at the sight, bowing her head while clutching her stomach to try and contain herself. The loud sounds from her caused Yongsun to lift her leg to kick her square in the hip. "Hey- shut up! I'm a newbie!"

"Owowow!" Moonbyul cried while laughing and straightened herself again while patting her stomach. "Oh gosh, that was hilarious. Okay, I'll help you." She moved closer to the brunette and redid the move, hoping that Yongsun would get it this time. "You just gotta lean back, y'know?" Yongsun attempted once more and had improved within the few seconds, gaining a clap of approval. "Nice. Okay, then we're gonna turn around and face each other." They both did a little twirl into positions where they where face to face. "And then I hold my hands out and you're gonna twirl into me."

Yongsun's brows raised at the other, looking from her hands and back to her face. "Do I have to?"

"Yah, do you want to learn how to dance or not?" The brunette sighed and put her hands into Moonbyul's, which lead to a smooth twirl into the other's arms, suddenly finding herself secure against her chest. Yongsun blinked and looked to the side to see the blonde's face right next to hers; so close that she could feel her breathing against her.

Moonbyul felt a little awkward in this position. She didn't dare look back at the other and only stared at their bodies in the mirror for she was suddenly so aware of everything that was touching; their hands, their legs, their arms and nearly their heads. She couldn't help but gently rub her fingers against Yongsun's to adjust the position of their hands, feeling the other's digits abide by hers. Her fingers were more slender than she expected, and much colder.

"...are you going to keep going?" Yongsun asked, bringing Moonbyul back to Earth.

The blonde's jaw hung open slightly before stuttering out her answer. "Oh- y- yeah. Sorry, I was just thinking," She laughed embarrassingly and squeezed Yongsun's hands tightly, about to take a step to the side and mutter her instructions, but was interrupted by the buzzing of a cellphone against her thigh.

Yongsun immediately separated from Moonbyul and pulled her phone out of her pocket, checking the ID of the caller. "Aish, it's Minhyuk," She mumbled and bit down on her lip. Moonbyul stared at the other with a blank expression, but also noticed the small glance from her and back to the phone screen, as if Yongsun was considering on skipping the call.

"..You should take that. It must be important if he's calling you during work." Moonbyul said with a smile and made a gesture for her to go to the hallway to have her privacy.

Yongsun paused for a moment before going over to quickly put on her boots and tapped her screen to answer the call. "Don't move!"

"I won't." The blonde watched as the other ran off into the hallway to leave her alone in the studio to only hear the quiet mumbles from the hallway. She swallowed and closed her eyes, turning around to keep her back to the door. She looked down at her hands to watch as her thumb gently brushed against the middle of her palm, where all of the other's touch was. "What am I doing?

Fooling around so casually like this, even if it didn't mean anything, wasn't right.

Yongsun made her way back into the studio after a moment while tucking her phone back into her pocket with the same wide smile on her face. "Sorry, he just wanted to check up on me. Where were we-"

Moonbyul cut her off. "Oh- uh... I got a class coming in a couple minutes so I think we should clean up instead." She lamely lied, rubbing her hand against the back of her head. "I'm really sorry; I lost track of time."

"Ah..." Yongsun said with a small frown on her face and stood there quietly for a second. "..well, I guess we should then." They both quickly knelt down to clean up the mess that they had made and dumped their trash into the trash, and Moonbyul walked over to the door to let the other out. "Text me when you're done, I can give ya a ride today!"

Moonbyul shook her head and dismissed the idea. "I gotta go somewhere after work so don't worry about me."

"Oh okay. See you after work then?" Yongsun said with a pout.

"See you, dummy." Moonbyul replied and patted the other's head, watching as the other left to go back to her office. Moonbyul closed the door with a sigh and patted her legs. "Wheein, Wheein, Wheein."

Chapter 19: I hope you’re doing well too! Thanks for the update. I feel so anxious for them. That was an awkward but necessary conversation. I don’t think I’d ever be able to sit through that kind of conversation and act normal afterwards.
