ch. 9

Why Now?

Wheein sat up in her living room in a confused daze. "Why was Moonbyul with Unnie? And why did she look so happy? Why am I jealous over my own cousin?!", she screamed inside of her head.

After seeing the two of them inside the special café, she dashed home without another word to anyone. Her safe haven was her bouncy couch, and she needed it bad. The talk, between her and Hwasa, about finding out if Moonbyul was serious about her was beginning to fade in her mind as anxiety and doubt clouded her judgement.

She felt so stressed that she even forgot about the fact that her cousin was about to get married. To a man.

Wheein had always been the jealous type, but she had never been as frantic about someone else as she was now. She knew that Moonbyul was a bit of a floater and never stuck to one person completely, however, with these past couple of weeks together it was hard for her to detach herself from someone who she couldn't help but believe was supposed to be with. Everything Moonbyul did scared her and she didn't know whether she liked it or not.

The puppy laid on her stomach on her salt-and-pepper patterned couch, with a soft, fuzzy pillow curled underneath her head. She was still in her day clothes - skinny jeans and a striped sweater - but she had no intentions of changing out of them. Her overthinking had tired her brain out, which meant her entire body was just as dead.

It felt as if time was going by in slow motion; the clock ticked every 120 seconds instead of the regular 60, and it felt like she was back in class, waiting for her professor to finish their lecture. Except, this time felt worse. She actually looked forward to seeing Moonbyul after class; this was the complete opposite.

It was all a waiting game at this point. Moonbyul had texted her minutes ago to tell her that she was finishing up at work and would like to see her that night. Of course, Wheein replied with an, "ok", but it was different than her usual, "okaaay"s, and she hoped that the blonde got the hint.

Her boredom directed her to going onto her phone to check the single notification that she had from her email and see if anyone had posted another pointless picture up on Instagram. Her thumb scrolled the long feed; pictures of people, food, or animals that were edited with bright filters covered her screen. All of them didn't exactly catch her eye, but one picture certainly did.

It was posted on Moonbyul's account, moon_starz. (Wheein had it memorized in her head as if it was something to remember for an exam.) And what do you know? It was a picture of her unnie, Yongsun, sitting in front of her with a shy, candid smile on her face. Two large mugs sat close to the camera, but it was clear that the main focus of the photo was her cousin. The puppy growled at the screen and tossed her phone to the side, burying her face into the pillow afterwards.

Wheein was pissed; at the other and herself. She had no reason to be mad. Moonbyul wasn't even hers. But nonetheless, anger bubbled deep in her stomach.

The moment that Wheein felt as if she was going to fall asleep from waiting so long for the other, the doorbell suddenly rang, which was followed by a rhythmic knock. Her head immediately bobbed upwards and felt a pain hit her neck, as if she had whiplash.

"WHEEIN-AH!" A familiar voice called from behind the wood.

Moonbyul stood behind the door with a box of macarons, instant food goodies, and a wide, using-all-of-her-nose-muscles smile on her face. Her first day on the job had gone smoother than an aged liquor going down an old man's throat. She may have woken up late and disturbed her future cousin-in-law, but she gained a new friend from the situation. The girl didn't have any idea of the burning flame ball behind the door had in store for her.

Wheein unlocked the door, knowing that the other would hear it as it made a slight click whenever it was released. Moonbyul waited for a moment after hearing the click since Wheein usually greeted her with a scream and a hug, but this time she didn't get that.

She got the idea that she was to open the door herself after another minute of waiting, scrunching her brows as she did so. She opened it slowly and poked her head inside casually, but a confused pout was on her lips. "Hey," Moonbyul greeted as she stepped inside. "What was with that-..." Wheein turned and went back to the couch without another glance to the other, which puzzled Moonbyul even more.

Wheein always played the annoying silent treatment card on her partners when she was angry, but she felt as if this wasn't going to last as long as it usually did.

This whole act made Moonbyul go silent as she kicked off her shoes and made her way into the kitchen, putting her treats onto the counter slowly before going over to the couch where Wheein sat calmly.

Moonbyul stared at her with an uneasy expression before opening again. "Hey."

The puppy's lips were sealed shut.

"Wheein." Moonbyul called out again and took a seat on the coffee table in front of her. Wheein merely stared, but no signs of her breaking down were present in her gaze. The blonde sighed and decided to finally take a bigger step and reached forward to rest her hands on the other's knees. "What's with you?"

Wheein's face scrunched and tried to move her knees away, but Moonbyul's grip was too intense. "What the--" She mumbled and clenched her fists, letting out a frustrated scowl. "God- what is with you?!" Her voice raised and pushed the other's hands away. Moonbyul's mouth dropped at Wheein's movements and instantly removed her palms from her knees, squinting her flaming eyes at the other.

"It's been 5 seconds since I got here and I haven't seen you all day!" Moonbyul yelled back as her rage was overcoming the best of her. She had never been very good at controlling her temper when she was intentionally pushed to the edge despite her many attempts to cure it. "What the hell is your problem?!"

Her abrupt change in tone shocked Wheein, causing her to shake in her seat. A soft whimper escaped her as she lowered her head and clenched her fists in her lap. "I-..." She whispered, not wanting to look up at all. She hadn't realized until that moment that her selfishness was an entire mistake and she may have just jeopardized their entire relationship. "...I'm sorry..."

Moonbyul rolled her eyes at her weak apology. She didn't have the time and patience for a bull answer. "Stop that. Tell me what's wrong."

Wheein gulped before answering as she was trying hard to keep her voice from breaking and letting the tears that welled up in her eyes fall. "I just... I saw you with Yongsun unnie today..."

The blonde had to sit there in silence for a couple seconds after Wheein revealed the truth behind her actions. She was put back into her original state; confusion. Her body loosened and her expression softened, but mouth still hung open in disorientation. "..w- what? What about her?"

"I saw you and her in the cafe today." Wheein repeated, feeling a little more embarrassed now that she had come to her senses. Now that Moonbyul was in front of her she did feel more aware of her emotions and began to see them in a different light. "What was I so worried about again...?" She thought.

Moonbyul scoffed light-heartedly and covered half of her face with her palm, wondering why this girl even had extreme thoughts about the two of them. "We were just having lunch!" She assured, her mind flashing back to their time at the café

It never even occured to Moonbyul that the lunch would be a problem as they obviously didn't have any weird intentions with being together in public. It did feel a little strange to her however, with the fact that she could click with her cousin's, and her, future in-laws on levels that she had never truly experienced before. Yongsun, despite her proper appearance, was a pretty dopey person but she had a pure heart. There was never a time in their conversation where it was truly silent and their attention was on each other for nearly the entire time.

The only moments that had interrupted them was when Minhyuk had called her out of the blue and check up on her first day. Moonbyul had to admit - she was a little sad when the other picked up the call. They had been having a playful banter about whether an idol should be better at singing or dancing and Yongsun just so happened to be winning, but Moonbyul wasn't the type to let an argument go. She wanted to tease the other for as long as she could until the conversation died out and the end of the argument was nowhere in sight; until Yongsun's ringtone went off.

Moonbyul could distinctly remember the way she tucked her chocolate locks behind her ear as she answered the call, and the tiny lift of her pinky as she lifted her mug to her pink, supple lips before greeting her fiancé. The echo of her harmonious giggle rang in her head as she could only imagine the dumb joke Minhyuk had told her, but it was completely different from the cackles from her that were caused by Moonbyul's jokes. Moonbyul didn't exactly know which laugh she liked better.

The image of Yongsun's body half-highlighted by the sun and the other half dimmed by the shadows of the café clouded her mind. Yongsun's doe orbs connected with hers, as if they were the only ones in the room. "God, those eyes of hers..."

Wheein's voice interrupted her train of thought. "Moonbyul?"

Moonbyul coughed and snapped out of it, covering . "S- sorry.. I got distracted," She mentally slapped herself in the face. "What the hell was that about? "But... yeah! We were just out for lunch, Weenie...."

The puppy sighed and leaned forward to rest her forehead against Moonbyul's chest and wrapped her arms around her slim figure. "I'm sorry... I have no idea what came over me."

Moonbyul chuckled and wrapped her arms back around her; one hand placed on the back of Wheein's head, the other around her back. She held the tiny girl close to her in a tight hold as she pressed her cheek to her head. "It's okay. I can understand where you're comin' from."

Wheein's head lifted slightly, trying to get a good look at the older. "Do you forgive me?"

"Of course." Moonbyul replied with a grin.

Wheein responded by nuzzling her face back against the other's shoulder, wanting to stay in silence for longer. Meanwhile, Moonbyul's head was spinning. Her teeth clenched as she stared at the wall in front of her. "What the ?"

...

Yongsun sat on the queen-sized bed with her laptop set on top of her legs and her hair tied up into a greasy bun. She hated that about her hair; it never stayed grease-less for more than a day.

Minhyuk came over to the bed in his regular pajamas - only in boxers - and crawled over to her, picking up her laptop to set it to the side and settled his head down on her bare legs. "Hey, baby."

"Hello." Yongsun chuckled as she let him do as he pleased and rested her fingers in his hair, slowly running them through his silky, black locks. She loved the fact that they had never stopped being affectionate despite their busy schedules once they moved in together; unlike other couples that they knew and heard of. Her lips curved into a small frown as soon as she saw him lift his phone above his head and begin to tap on his screen. "Oh c'mon. I can't finish my work but you get to play on your phone?"

"Nonono. I'm tryin' to show you something; I saw it on Instagram!" Minhyuk chimed and continued to scroll down his screen. Yongsun rolled her eyes at her fiancé. She never went along with social media unless it was something extremely important, but something like Instagram wasn't worth her time. She had Facebook to update her life on.

"Alright then; what is it?" She raised her brows as she impatiently waited for him to come up with the surprise.

Minhyuk grinned as he finally located the photo that Moonbyul had posted hours before and turned the phone around to show her the evidence of their outing. Yongsun's eyes widened as soon as she noticed who was exactly in the photo; her. She took the cell and observed it carefully, absolutely in awe of the moment captured.

Although it had been edited with some type of app, the picture was adorable. It showed Yongsun with a wide grin on her lips, but it wasn't the regular frozen and perfectly posed photo. Her eyes weren't even focused on the camera. Her smile was bright and there was a bounce in her hair as she had moved just before Moonbyul captured the moment. She could remember the moment perfectly.

"Can I take a picture of you?"

Yongsun's eyes widened slightly at the sudden question. "...really?"

"Yeah."

She grew a little red. It was always awkward for her to take some type of solo photo as the attention was on her, and only her. "Why do you want it?"

"To keep this memory sacred, of course!" Moonbyul responded with a some smug smile on her face as she pulled out her phone. "C'mon. Let me do it!" She whined.

Yongsun had always been so weak to whenever someone pleaded to her. "...okay, fine! But just one so you better get it right the first time."

Moonbyul laughed cockily. "Of course I will. I'm a master at photography."

The brunette rolled her eyes and set up in a proper pose with her practiced smile. She stared hard at the camera for a long moment, but didn't hear any click from the phone to tell that the photo had truly been taken. "...are ya gonna take it or what?!"

"Duh," Moonbyul mumbled and pretended to take it, waiting for the perfect moment. "Ah. Beautiful."

"What?!" Yongsun's eyes widened before her expression turned into a bashful beam. "Don't say stuff like that!" The click of the camera was heard right just a second after. "..you didn't even take it until then?!"

Moonbyul ignored her and nodded in approval of her final product. "Now, that's beautiful."

Yongsun nearly felt her eyes roll into the back of her head as she reached over the table to smack Moonbyul on the arm. "You little bug-"

"I'm taller than you, dummy."

"Shut up!"

"Dummmy."

The brunette couldn't help but smile at the memory that was created not too long ago. "It did come in handy."  She read the caption over and over again, which read, "Cheers to my new work buddy! Or should I say, cousin??" with a small emoticon of a heart at the end of the message. She read it repeatedly until Minhyuk reached to take his phone back with a satisfied smile on his face.

"That was a really good picture of you, babe... I gotta get her to send that to me." He chuckled and turned his phone off, setting it to the side.

Yongsun let out of a soft sigh and looked down at him, pressing her palms against his cheeks. "You don't need a picture when you got me right here."

"...but you're way prettier in that one." Minhyuk pouted jokingly.

She clicked her tongue against the roof of . "Stupid."

Chapter 19: I hope you’re doing well too! Thanks for the update. I feel so anxious for them. That was an awkward but necessary conversation. I don’t think I’d ever be able to sit through that kind of conversation and act normal afterwards.
