“I just thought Lu Han was the one. We’ve been dating for six years. He and I got a job in the same country and lived together. He didn’t want to get married. He believed that if we got married, we would end up hating each other. Especially if we had kids.”

“That’s rough.”

Kris nodded, sipping on this coffee, “He said that if we weren’t married, we would have more time with each other. We could have on the kitchen counters, in the living room, over the balcony without so much shame or the kids walking in. He said we go to England without a moment’s notice. He promised so much.”

“So no on the kitchen counters?” Tao smiled, earning a chuckle out of the taller man.

“None. Like, we used to have , but it stopped. I was contented without it, but there was only so much I could get out myself. He didn’t even give me a reason. He just had his suitcases at the door, said he was going back to China, that he didn’t think a long distance relationship would work out and left. I couldn’t even stop him...”

There was a bit of silence. Kris kept staring at his coffee, and Tao played with his piece of cake. They were both in thought, mourning for their past loves.

“I recently broke up with my boyfriend,” Tao mentioned, “It was something so trivial, but I couldn’t stand him anymore. He was trying to change me. At first he wanted to change my eating habits, and then in was the bedding. I didn’t think anything of it, until he called me a panda. I don’t like the term; it makes me feel self-conscious about my dark circles. I was called that in elementary school and it annoyed me. So I flipped. I kicked him out, I threw his stuff out, and I was just done with him.”

“Do you feel better about it?”

Tao shrugged, “Kind of. Like, I enjoyed being cuddled up next to; the romantic gestures, the sweet kisses, but I didn’t like how he was changing me.”

Tao and Kris left the shop, and walked along the park, talking animatedly about their lives, what they’ve been doing the past eight years since that road trip.

Kris found out that Tao opened his own bakery near his apartment. He probably passed it every morning without realizing it. Tao dated many people, a list of ‘this one girl/guy’ or ‘I think it was’ was always growing. Kris didn’t realize that Tao had learned sign language for his best friend, and was pretty obsessed with the newest dramas.

Tao didn’t take Kris for the athletic type, but after hearing he was now teaching gym and English at the local high school was new. Tao learned that Kris tried to take martial arts but was so stiff, he quit after a month. He liked how Kris was taking an appreciation towards art, and tried drawing as a hobby, claiming he was the next Picasso.

It was probably until night time when Kris mentioned, “So, I guess this whole day made us friends.”

Tao was confused about what he was saying until he remembered the whole conversation on that day many years ago. He chuckled and asked, “Are you sure about that?”

“I’m pretty sure that our friendship will last a long time.”

Tao chuckled, “Promise?”

Kris looked over at the boy, smiling, “Promise.”
