In sync.

Love Me For My Imperfections.

“Run!” Jaejoong exclaimed. He and Minah ran off the bridge, towards the opposite direction of the night market. Minah couldn’t remember how long they ran, but they still could hear footsteps behind them. Jaejoong grabbed Minah’s wrist and pulled her into an ally. He pulled her close to her and hid themselves in the shadows while the fan girls ran past them.

They stayed like that for a while, until they knew the coast was clear. “That was close.” Jaejoong spoke. “Let’s go.”

The two of them walked back the way they came. While they walked, they noticed a neon sign hung on the red brick wall. It read, ‘Fortune Teller’.

“Was that there a moment ago?” Minah asked.

Jaejoong shook his head, “I’m not sure. But come on, let’s go, the guys are probably looking for us.”

“If they want to find us, they would have called. Come on, let’s go. It looks fun.”

“Minah, they get paid to tell lies. They don’t know anything about you, or your future.”

“Come on Jaejoong, why are you so stiff all the time?” Minah walked towards the door, which read open, “I’m going.”

“Minah! Wait–” Jaejoong went after her and entered the door after her.

Inside was pitch black except for more neon signs that pointed towards a hallway.

“This looks dangerous.” Jaejoong whispered.

“Stop being a wuss.” Minah replied.

“Excuse me?” He exclaimed.

Minah ignored him and continued walking down the hallway. She wasn’t scared at all. The orphanage is pitch black almost all the time. She’s used to the dark, and walking in it. She reached a velvet curtain and lifted it up. Inside was a small room. Again, it was dark. In the middle of the room is a round table with a crystal ball illuminating a soft blue light. Behind the crystal ball sat an old looking lady. Wrinkles covered her face and her head was wrapped in a scarf. Her eyes squinted when she saw them walk in.

“Take a seat.” She said. Her voice was coarse.

“You’re Korean?” Jaejoong asked.

“I’m a fortune teller, I can speak many languages.”

“How did you know we were Korean?” He asked again.

“Again, I’m a fortune teller.”

“Jaejoong, stop asking stupid questions.” Minah whispered to him. She went over and took a seat across from the fortune teller. Jaejoong stood at the door way, ready to run at any sign of trouble.

“Aren’t you a pretty little thing?” She said.

Minah cringed, she didn’t like being referred to as a ‘thing’.

“What would you like to know?” She asked, “I’m ready to answer anything.”

Minah thought for a while. What did she want to know? Why was she left at the orphanage? Why SM accepted her out of all the other applicants? Why her mom left her when she was young? Why her heart beats so fast when she’s with Jaejoong? Why does she see random visions that seems to be the past?

What did she really want to know? She didn’t know herself. Her mind is all fixed up of thoughts and feelings, it was hard to pick out what was important.

“Calm down, sweetie, take your time. Your aura is awfully ghastly.”

“I just have so much on my mind.” She replied.

“Sometimes, curiosity is what keeps us going. Sometimes it’s best if we don’t have something answered.”

“I don’t know…there’s a lot of stuff I’m dying to find out for a while.”

“Then how about just an analysis, followed by a fortune?”

Minah nodded, “Okay…”

“A small donation is appreciated.” She said.

Minah reached into her pockets and pulled out the crumpled bills, “This is all I have.”

The fortune teller nodded, “Give me your right palm.”

Minah placed her hand of the table and the fortune teller reach over and snatched her wrist. She yanked Minah closer and traced her palm with her long, pointy, fingernails. It tickled Minah but she resisted the urge to scratch.

“You’ve been a great distress to someone dear,

You’ve lived your whole life fear.

You’ve suffered great,

But you feel as if this is your fate.

You try to run away from the past,

And you’ve got curiosity that seems to be vast.

You try to find answers every day,

But nothing will be resolved this way.”

“I don’t understand… I–”

“There’s no need to my dear. It’s not in the interpretation.”

“But can you please–”

The fortune teller cut her off again, “Would you like to see your future?”

Minah nodded, “Yes.”

“Hand me your left palm.”

She did the same thing as she did with the right palm. When she finished she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She looked back at Minah spoke, “Maybe it’s best if you leave.”

“What do you mean?” Minah asked, “Aren’t you going to tell me my fortune?”

“I have to close down now anyways, you’ve been here too long.”

“Are you saying you’re a fake?” Jaejoong spoke up. “She asked for a fortune, aren’t you going to tell her? That is your job after all, unless you’re a phoney.”

“Unless you want her to suffer more, than you shall keep quiet!” The fortune teller spoke in English. Jaejoong understood it, but Minah looked lost.

“What’d she say?” Minah asked.

“Nothing.” Jaejoong blurted out. “Let’s go.” He turned around and lifted the velvet curtain and left.

Minah began to follow him, but heard the fortune teller speak, “You paid for two reading, but you only got one. Would you like another?”

Minah looked back. Jaejoong was waiting for her, but his will only take a while. “Sure.”

“That boy is special to you, no?”

“He’s just someone I work for.”

The fortune teller shook her head, “So blind to the most pure loves.”

“I don’t understand…I don’t like him like that. He’s someone I work for, I can’t have any feelings for him.”

“Oh, but you do. And you can’t help it.”

“You’re lying.” Minah turned around to leave.

“Hwa Minah, if I were you, I’d stay and listen. You did pay after all.”

Minah froze, how did she know her name? Her name wasn’t mentioned at all this time. She felt a shiver up her spine, almost as if there was a breeze in the room. Minah turned around and faced the fortune teller.

“I don’t believe in soul mates. Not now, not ever. But I do believe when souls are in sync.” The fortune teller said. “His aura lights up whenever you speak, whenever he lays eyes on you, whenever he’s around you.”

The old fortune teller’s eyes sparkled as if she just attained new knowledge. A shadow cast over her face and she bowed her head down. She was just about to say something until Minah heard her name being called.

“MINAH! I FOUND THEM! LET’S GO!” Jaejoong said, rushing into the room.

“Run!” Jaejoong exclaimed. He and Minah ran off the bridge, towards the opposite direction of the night market.
