JONGIN - or how to become Peter Pan
Over the rainbow, second star to the right and straight on till morning
Kim JongIn was always getting on LuHan's nerves. He was the most infuriating person the blond had probably ever met. He was also one hell of a pilot and good with his fists too. The Chinese man was better with weapons though.
JongIn was a dreamer. He traveled around the galaxy with his friends and it couldn't get any better than that. The Ariadne was everybody's property but the crew gave the title of Captain to LuHan because he was the oldest and the most responsible.
JongIn was his first mate and navigator and Yixing was the handy mechanic and translator.
The two Chinese men were childhood friends and there both dreamed of getting out of the streets and travel the galaxy. They met JongIn while doing some illegal work for an underground black market on the S.M system. LuHan laughed at how Yixing immediately fell for the tan-skinned Korean boy.
After that, they were the inseparable three. And when they had gathered enough money, they bailed and never looked back. It was a pirate's life for them. And let's not forget, Jason, their mascot.
The four of them would go anywhere they pleased, or more like anywhere JongIn would lead them. They would do mercenary jobs when they needed the money or helped out lieutenant Cecily, a GSI military employee and a very good friend of JongDae and JunMyeon's, on outer space rescue missions and sightseeing on different systems.
The teams worked perfectly well together. JongDae was the one who found the Ariadne crew and recruited them. Mr. Griffith always needed someone to do his dirty work.
But still, JongIn was the happiest man in the universe. He was with his best friend and his lover and that was all that he needed. That should have been all that JongIn needed. But the first mate had an addiction for thrill and action and adventures. He always wanted, needed more. He was reckless and Yixing wished he would value his life more. But the tanned boy always answered with a 'what's the point of living if you don't live to the fullest'.
The crew was a little worried sometimes but they never saw it as a real problem.
Until one day, eventually.
They were on TRAX, a volcanic planet. At first, the mission was to befriend the Traxens but there had been a misinformation and the people of TRAX thought that it was a raid to conquer and steal they craft.
On purpose or an honest mistake? But knowing Mr. Griffith and his lust for power, all of them guessed they walked straight into a trap.
Indeed, Traxens were sorts of shamans and they believed that the volcano was their patron god. They had the rarest of vegetation and knowledge of how to bottle lava and use it as deadly weapons.
It quickly became out of hand as YunHo's unit began to fire the area, fearing for their own lives or possibly following GSI's orders. Cecily tried to stop them but at this point chaos was reigning and no one would listen.
The lieutenant called for backup but Mr. Griffith made it clear that it was outrageous. That's when they all acknowledge that it was, indeed, all part of a scheme to over power TRAX.
So Cecily asked directly for JongDae's help and that's when the men himself came to the rescue. Well 'rescue' was a big word for he was alone.
"I couldn't," he told Cecily and the others as soon as he got off his spaceship. "Mr. Griffith is too stubborn and the others were too afraid to come. I'm probably fired, but what the hell."
JongDae was always a positive person and JongIn and LuHan understood why he wouldn't want to get JunMyeon involved.
JongIn was worried, though. Yixing wasn't much of a fighter and he couldn't take a chance to lose the love of his life.
"Yixing!" JongIn shouted, the sound of guns and bombs being so loud. But he was already at his side. Yixing was always at JongIn's side. The tanned man kissed his lover furiously and hold him tight.
"I love you."
"I love you too," was always Yixing's answer and JongIn maybe wanted to cry.
I love you so much. Please forgive me.
JongIn tasered his love with the taser he had stolen from Cecily earlier. And as Yixing fell unconscious in his arm, letting out a faint 'JongIn', the Korean man let a tear roll on his tanned skin.
"JongDae!!"
It was such a mess. JongIn could only trust a few people here but the chestnut-haired man was unquestionably one of them. Like always, JongIn didn't need to say much. As soon as JongDae saw Yixing in JongIn's arms he knew.
"I'm on it."
"Thanks."
JongDae took the sleeping Chinese man on his back and rushed towards his spaceship. Now Yixing was safe and JongIn felt a little less worried.
But the battle was still ahead of them.
"Watch out!!"
LuHan's voice echoed as an arrow was shot towards JongIn. He dodged it and it scratched his waist. Just a scratch, no big deal.
Or that's what he made the others believe as the truth was that it was poisoned and the venom was already in his system. The tanned man felt it but bared with it. Yixing would fix him up when they win the fight.
It didn't fool LuHan, though. JongIn could never fool LuHan.
"You're hurt," he shouted over the sounds of explosions.
"It's nothing," JongIn said but he didn't know if he was trying to convince his captain or himself.
But they had no time to argue as more Traxens were coming. JongIn was light on his feet and a really good kicker, and luckily, the foes -might as well call them that now- wore no armors. But the first mate wasn't sure who to fight, those people were just defending themselves. All this was Mr. Griffith's fault. JongIn always hated that bastard. It's a good thing JunMyeon took more from his mother, even though sometimes the tanned man doubted if his friend was really blood related to that sinister man at all.
YunHo managed to activate a barrier against the shamans' magic but it wouldn't hold that long. Retreat was probably the best option right now.
JongIn looked around him and all he could see was panic and destruction. He quickly searched for his friends. Cecily was shot in the shoulder and JongDae was trying to get her up. The two Korean men's eyes met and the chestnut-haired one nodded.
Good. Yixing is safe.
"Retreat," YunHo kept shouting and people were running all over the place.
JongIn was just about to reach the Ariadne. His vision was blurred and he was sweating like mad. He could feel the thumping of his heart in his ears and it hurt like hell.
Just a little bit more.
His feet were heavy and JongIn had trouble to breathe. His head began to spin and suddenly his face met the ground.
"JongIn!!"
LuHan rushed at his first mate's side and when he saw how the poison had already spread to his chest, the blond looked up, trying to hold his tears back.
"No no no no no, please."
"Sorry hyung," JongIn had his usual smirk face and LuHan hated it so much right now. "Looks like I'm taking the easy way out." The tanned man coughed some blood and there was nothing the Chinese captain could do.
LuHan wanted to shout at JongIn. He was always so stubborn. Why couldn't he just have told them. The dark-haired boy had a bad habit of always wanting to resolve everything himself. He was so selfish.
"Hyung, please."
JongIn begged for the first time in his life and it was something LuHan wished he never had to hear.
"JongIn, no-"
"Yes." The Korean boy looked so weak and it was a hurtful sight to see. "Don't make me say it again."
JongIn reached out to LuHan's desert eagle strapped to his hip and put it in the captain's hand. LuHan shook his head again and again even though he knew nothing was going to change his first mate's mind.
"Do it. For me."
JongIn knew it was unfair to ask the blond such a thing but he didn't want to die because of some stupid poison. He knew the Chinese man was having a struggling fight in his head.
"'To die would be an awfully big adventure.', right?" LuHan finally said with a forced smile, tears rolling on his reddened cheeks.
JongIn clutched the man's arm tight as the pain was more and more unbearable, but he forced himself to speak anyway.
"No. 'To live will be an awfully big adventure.', hyung." He looked straight into LuHan's eyes. "Promise me. Promise me that you will live, and that you will not mourn me. Don't hold back because of me, or Yixing, or anybody. Live for yourself. Find your happiness."
The blond shook his head again. He closed his eyes as to make everything disappear.
"Promise me. Hyung!"
JongIn's voice was pleading and LuHan reluctantly pointed the gun at him and pressed the hammer.
"I promise," he whispered.
JongIn sighed and smiled at his best friend. "Thank you." He breathed in and breathed out.
"I'm ready."
JongIn was glad that Yixing was unconscious and on the ship. Thanks to JongDae. This way he wouldn't have to see his lover's sad face. He was such a coward.
"Do it."
LuHan was strong, JongIn knew that and he was so grateful for what he was doing. For everything he had done for him. The captain's hands were shaking but he managed to lift the first mate so that his head laid in the crook of the blond's neck. LuHan breathed a few times, trying to calm himself and kissed JongIn's forehead.
"I love you."
"I love you, hyung."
LuHan shut his eyes so hard he could see stars and pulled the trigger.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," LuHan kept repeating as he rocked JongIn in his arms. "Please forgive me."
The blond kissed the top of his best friend's head and JongIn took his last breath smiling.
