Chapter 4: The Company

Snow White and Seven and the Dwarves

“Ahjussi, please keep the change.” Sandara said, giving her fare to the cab driver. The ahjussi shakily accepted it with thanks, and after he fully got hold of the money, Sandara bowed and got off. She stared at the large building in front of her, the Park Food Corporation—biggest and most productive food business of all, starting from food stalls up to the restaurants. It’s her time ever since she got locked up to visit it again—of course how can she visit this when she’s locked up?

She remembered in the back of her mind the soft vanilla and fruity smell all around the building when you enter or wherever you went. Depending on the day, the smell would change to different food. And the funny part of that was when it’s break time; the smell would change into something aromatic and delicious. Also, the office workers were given by her father perfumes that smelled like fruit to add to the food-motif of the building—even the cafeteria at the back of the building was built from the shape of an apple. Every employee was happy, and they worked with ease. No one ever got stressed and sometimes, they would fill the whole building with their overpowering singing voice—all of them singing just one song.

Sandara grinned and told herself, “Fighting!” She ventured inside, and instead of the same fruity smell, she was greeted by the air freshener smell that felt very unnatural. Everyone almost grew gray hair, and they were already wearing office uniforms not the past farmer Cosplay her father chose to honor the farmers who planted the food he sell. There were no more singing and dancing. Everyone was… different.

Sandara tapped her foot lightly on the ground, and thought deeply where she can see a part of the building where she can see the fruits. She wiggled her lips, and suddenly gasped under her breath, “The storage area!”

She walked past the busy employees, hiding herself every now and then behind the walls and ventured towards the storage area. It was located in the basement, so it wasn’t that hard to reach from the entrance area. As usual, the whole basement smelled food than upstairs and Sandara felt the memories twenty years ago relived inside of her.

She went down the stairs, quickly and after she opened the door to the storage area using the key Bom gave her, she went towards one box that was marked Oranges. Excitement filled her heart and lungs that she could hardly breathe, then she opened the box’s lid.

Her heart stopped, her lips turned into a sad frown, her bright eyes suddenly turned dark and her lungs lacked air again because she felt her asthma slowly kicking in.

Instead of the fresh oranges that she expected, the box was filled with illegal drugs inside small packets of plastic.

Sandara couldn’t breathe, and she felt like the air from her lungs getting away as if on escapade as her. Her asthma was kicking in, and she doesn’t have her medication with her. But it wasn’t the asthma that slowly kills her but the horrible changes done in the company by her stepmother. It was devastating, much more devastating than the fact her stepmother refused her to step outside or communicate with others. The company her father had worked hard for was now illegally working. She thought of the numerous souls in Seoul and South Korea that uses the illegal drugs their company delivers. She thought of the numerous lives taken away and slowly being taken away. Sandara was brought into tears, and she put up her hoodie.

As she made her way to the exit, she tried not to wheeze due to lack of air. It was a good thing that no one noticed her, or even takes the time to peer inside the hood. Their bustling somehow gave her a benefit.

As she was about to reach the door, someone quickly blocked her away. “Excuse me,” She slightly bowed, her voice limited due to the asthma attack but the person didn’t give way.

“The men that will deliver the to Gangnam are only a few. You want to join the crew?” He asked, lifting up his clipboard.

Sandara shook her head. “I have more business to do. I-“ She bit her tongue, still wheezing. “I just had gotten here from the deliver to Il-san.”

“Il-san?” He asked. “Ah, okay. You can go home now.”

“Thank you.” Sandara bowed, and finally exited outside.

“Hey, Baechul!” He shouted, and automatically, someone showed from who-knows where. “Did we deliver drugs to Il-san?”

“We only deliver fruits to Il-san, sunbae-nim.” Baechul answered. “Why?”

He slapped himself and groaned. “Ah, I just asked a fruit delivery guy to deliver to Gangnam. I’m in trouble with the—Wait, if he’s at the fruit division…” He cupped his chin. “Why did he know about the drug dealing? Was there a division with the fruit delivery and drug delivery?” Baechul just answered with a shrug.

“Nah, it’s just imagination.” He shrugged and went off.

Actually, I'm sleepless because I'm suffering from insomnia--sort of. My body radiates too much energy that I can't sleep even if I wanted. -_- Only a few more!
