Dad

S.M. Youth Star Audition - The Trainee Stage

I'm dawdling. I'm nervous.

Lights on, Lights off.

Open the fridge door, close the fridge door.

Mum has gone out to the shops to grab something, and dad has just finished preparing dinner. I walk from the fridge and approach the couch where he was sitting...but detour to towards the bathroom at the last minute. I glimpsed that he was resting his eyes.

I pluck up the courage and exit out of the bathroom. It was now or never.

"Hey, Dad," I tried to steady my voice as much as possible whilst speaking in a casual, light tone. "Mum told me to ask you...if I could go to a music festival this Saturday..in Sydney." I couldn't bring myself to say it was an audition for singing. Why? Because he thinks it's a joke. I don't know where he got that idea from, but if my 10+ years of experience in learning and performing music isn't enough to let him know that I'm serious about this, then I don't know what is. Maybe he's comparing me to his younger self...He used to play the Drums while he was younger, and also dabbled in the Harmonica - he's singing voice isn't too bad either. But just because he gave up his dreams, it doesn't mean that I have to too. I have to try before giving up.

"Mmm...wait, what? Sydney?" Dad said, waking up from his rest.

"Yes." I reply, watching his lips for every word.

"What music festival?"

I kept a steady look, "You know, singing, dancing, performances..." I'm not lying here...just not saying that I'll also be one of the singers.

"Who are you going with?" He asked curiously.

"Just myself," I say, after deciding not to tell him about the other auditionees on the forum because technically, I'm not going there with them, just meeting up.

"You have to pay for plane tickets and festival tickets too! What kind of addicting music festival is this?" He exclaimed, eyes wide.

"No, festival tickets are free!"

"Free?!"

"Yes...because it's held in Sydney."

"Oh, you mean like, because Sydney city is hosting it?"

"Yes, yes," I nodded, Sydney technically is hosting S.M. auditions. "And I found cheap plane tickets!"

*ding dong*

Mum's back and interrupts the conversation by starting dinner.

The matter gradually solves itself over a thick layer of tense atmosphere.

Dad didn't ask any further questions, nor did he explicitly say no...

so the final answer, is yes.
