Dresses for Dummies

True to Life: Short Shorts

Jessica scoffed in indignation.

“No.”

Stephanie’s aegyo-filled pout had the Ice Princess rolling her eyes excessively, clearly not amused in the slightest.

“Oh, come on! It’ll be fun!” Sooyoung exclaimed, unfazed by the glowering girl in front of her.

“Our definition of ‘fun’ seems to be on a whole different level.”

“Wearing them won’t hurt anybody. Sooyoung and I will also wear one, too! It’s not like we’ll let you have all the fun by yourself. It’ll make for a really good memory,” Stephanie stated, not giving up in the slightest. Jessica just lifted a perfectly manicured eyebrow at the younger girl.

“Walking around Barcelona in broad daylight while wearing wedding dresses isn’t exactly considered normal, Stephanie.”

Fany just waved her statement off as she latched onto Sooyoung’s arm.

“First off, when were we ever normal? Second, it’s just for one hour, two at most. Let’s treat it like some sort of social experiment! And, FYI, they are not even full wedding dresses. They’re like – mini wedding dresses! Like cocktail dresses but with more flair. And they’re pretty. And cheap! Let’s not forget cheap.”

The older girl looked at her like she was retarded, which she probably was. Jessica's eyes were saying that it was a very stupid idea and would only end in disaster if she agreed. Seeing this, Fany and Sooyoung changed their tactics.

“Soo and I will pay for that crazy-expensive wine you love so much for two nights,” said Stephanie.

“Plus midday snacks of your choice for the rest of our trip,” added Sooyoung.

“And we’ll add in a couple of souvenirs, too. You wanted to check out that vintage shop near the hotel, right?”

Jessica couldn’t help but be amused at how serious her friends were about this wild, idiotic idea of theirs.

“Why are you guys so adamant about doing this anyway?”

Fany crossed her arms and thought for a second, slamming a fist on her palm like she had some sort of epiphany, before answering.

“Well, when else can you say that you did something eccentric while in Spain? And on your birthday, too! It’s not like people here know us. They can literally call us ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and we won’t even mind ‘cause, like, it’s true. Well, you’re rich, anyway. But that’s beside the point!”

The older woman snorted. It was a very poor argument, if she could even call it that. But Stephanie wasn’t really one for covert tactical speeches to get her to agree on stuff. And sadly, Sooyoung was no better. They just tend to put their feet inside their mouths most times.

“If you want to do something different, why not just go busking around a commercial plaza or something?”

Fany just stared blankly at the older girl. The girls could practically hear the gears turning in her head.

“…That - is actually not a bad idea! Let’s do that sometime this week!”

Jessica just threw her hands up in exasperation while Sooyoung laughed. There was really no dull moment with these girls.

“Ugh! You are really shameless!”

Stephanie started jumping excitedly as she saw her friend finally caving in.

“Come on! Please? We’ll definitely get good laughs out of this.”

“So, you game or what? Take your pick!”

The two looked beside them, Fany squealing as Sooyoung held a few hangers up for their perusal. Jessica bit her lip and reluctantly nodded in defeat.

“Okay, fine! But only for an hour.”

Fany and Soo grinned cheekily and high-fived while Jessica dejectedly followed them towards several racks with multicolored fabrics of different shapes and sizes.

“God, I hope I won’t regret this.”

Jessica wore a deadpan expression while scrutinizing her reflection intensely, internally cursing everyone within a ten-meter radius.

“OMG don’t we look so pretty?!”

The Ice Princess looked behind her, unsure if she wanted to laugh or hurl something particularly hard and heavy towards her friend.

“Fany, you literally look like a walking pink pig bathed in glitter and glue that fell in a vat of sparkles. Seriously?!”

Jessica’s obvious loathing towards the dress-shaped atrocity didn’t deter Stephanie from checking herself out, giddily twirling around like an elephant high on weed.

“I prefer describing it as being blessed by fairies and unicorns, thank you very much. Aren’t you happy that I’ll obviously attract most of the attention from you?”

Jessica just shrugged.

“Beats looking like a cream puff in heals, I guess.” The older woman actually looked divine in an ecru-colored, A-line, spaghetti-strapped dress, the bow and full skirt made of tulle that flowed beautifully down to her ankles.

Sooyoung went over and fixed her skirt.

“Oh, stop it. You look so gorgeous! Doesn’t she, Angel?” Sooyoung said as she addressed the owner of the store; a proud gay man who confidently proclaimed that he resembled Chris Hemsworth. At a certain angle, probably? But in his defense, the bulging muscles made up for his poor eyesight and everything else in between.

“Sí, Señorita. Hermosas damas. Beautiful ladies.”

Fany and Soo couldn’t help but coo at him, trying to butter him up a bit so they could get a bigger discount before paying for the dresses.

“Aww. Gracias, mi bebé. See, Jess? It really suits you!”

The older girl just took her belongings and headed for the exit.

“Let’s just go already so we can get this insanity over and done with as soon as possible.”

The rest of the girls followed her out the door.

“Oh, poo. Lighten up! We’re doing this together! Girl power and female unity and all that jazz, right?” Fany exclaimed, looping her arms around her friend while trying to force her to skip towards their next destination.

Sooyoung shook her head at her friends and waved goodbye to the shopkeeper who enthusiastically winked and waved back.

“Bye, Angel! Wish us luck!”

“Adios, Señoras!”

“Where the did they run off to?!”

After leaving the thrift store, the girls rode a cab and ended up going on a Barcelona Gardens tour for the day.

The gardens were simply breathtaking with their picturesque landscape and amazing history. So far, they had visited the Palau de les Heures Gardens, The Tamarita Gardens, The Laribel Gardens, Cervantes Park, and The Horta Labyrinth Park.

Stephanie and Sooyoung were glad that their friend was enjoying herself and seemed to have forgotten that the three of them looked like they came from a poorly hosted costume party with “Retro Wedding Massacre” as the theme.

Currently, they were at Ciutadella Park, Barcelona’s biggest park that resembled the one in NYC. It was their final stop, but unfortunately for the older woman, her good-for-nothing tour guides practically deserted her ten minutes upon arrival, leaving her right smack in the middle of the lush field.

It was a cool Saturday afternoon, only an hour shy of six in the evening, but the sun was still up and the park was bustling with weekend activity.

“I didn’t even see them leave!”

She started walking around, trying to stay away from the more crowded areas as much as possible but proved futile since the park was teeming with locals and tourists.

“They are so dead!!” Jessica grumbled, nose flaring.

She finally noticed the amused and appreciative looks she was getting and her face flushed red in embarrassment. She didn’t exactly mind the occasional attention, but what she was getting was unwanted, and she just really preferred to go back to her hotel room and lounge inside her luxurious tub.

Jessica would’ve changed her clothes hours ago but Sooyoung insisted on carrying them along with hers and Fany’s.

She was startled when her phone suddenly rang, and she let out a relieved sigh yet couldn’t help but get pissed at the same time when she saw it was Sooyoung calling.

“What the hell, Soo?! Where are you?!”

A laugh was her answer, which just made her pissed off even more.

“We’re sorry! Fany suddenly dragged me into this area of the park with swing dancers and circus performers. We honestly thought you followed, and only now did we realize you weren’t with us!”

It was a bit fishy since Jessica didn’t notice any performers when they arrived but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. She just wanted to leave.

“Whatever. I’ll just head on over to wherever you are. Where exactly are you, two?”

“Oh, no need, Sica! We’ll go to you. Bye!”

Jessica stared at her phone blankly.

“But I didn’t give them my location yet. Did I?”

Fany and Soo laughed as they watched from a safe distance their friend who looked like a lost little lamb in an extravagant Bo Peep attire.

Hands down, all of them really did look exemplary in their gowns. Jessica’s was the simplest, yet she gave off the most regal vibe out of the three. The memory of strolling around in the gardens feeling like princesses was like a dream, and all of them definitely enjoyed the experience. And the pictures would make great wedding photo collage material someday.

But Stephanie and Sooyoung wouldn’t be them if they didn’t attempt any kind of mischief to cap off their day. And who better to bully than their beloved Ice Princess?

They stayed hidden for another ten minutes before deciding that they’d tormented their friend enough when Fany suddenly pulled Sooyoung back again.

“What?”

“Look!!”

Jessica was getting really frustrated. She tried calling Soo once more but she wasn’t answering and Fany’s phone seemed to be turned off for some reason.

She started walking again to try and blow off some steam when she suddenly bumped into something accidentally.

Not really caring where she was going and stomping like a rhino in heat, Jessica unintentionally tripped on a woman’s foot, landing unceremoniously on top of said woman’s lap.

It was like time was frozen. No one moved as the pair stared at each other, eyes wide, mouths open – both equally stunned at what had transpired.

The whole scene felt like something out of a cheesy rom-com movie, cliché as that sounded.

And Jessica Jung was absolutely floored. Even though she should be spouting apologies and then screaming away in embarrassment, all her mind could process at that moment was how ethereally charming the woman in front of her was, her features she wouldn’t mind staring at forever and never tire of, as crazy as that sounded.

At the back of her mind, she was probably drooling.

The taller woman was finally startled from her obvious daydreaming when the beautifully handsome lady cleared and let out light yet husky giggles. CUTE.

It took the two a while to re-orient themselves of their surroundings, with Jessica profusely asking for forgiveness for her lack of coordination while the other just stared and smiled at the beautiful girl in amusement, waving the apologies away.

“I am really, very sorry! How can I make it up to you?”

“It was an accident, no harm done. If anything, I also shouldn’t have stuck my foot out in the first place knowing people were walking by. Oh, I’m Taeyeon, by the way.”

Jessica bashfully introduced herself and shook the woman’s outstretched hand, noting how soft it felt. Her cheeks flushed at that thought.

“Are you late for something? Is that why you were rushing?”

Jessica tilted her head in confusion as to what the other woman was talking about. Taeyeon found the girl in front of her very adorable as she chuckled and pointed at the taller woman’s fancy attire.

Jessica looked down at her dress and blushed even deeper as she finally understood what Taeyeon was referring to.

“Oh, oh no! I-I just got roped into something so I had to wear this. I was looking for my friends and wasn’t really paying attention to where I was walking. I really am sorry. Is your foot okay? I didn’t crush it with my heel, did I?”

She looked down to check on Taeyeon’s foot when she finally noticed what the girl was wearing.

Jessica’s eyes widened as she took note of the polished wingtip shoes up to the clean-cut, rose-colored pantsuit, stopping at the face that she was starting to grow fond of.

Taeyeon gave her a boyish grin, eyes alight with glee.

“Looks like we’re both dressed up with nowhere to go. Can’t let a beautiful dress go to waste now, can we? How about accompanying me to dinner? Think of it as making up for falling on me, although I can’t say I minded one bit. You’re definitely a welcome surprise.”

Jessica, not knowing where the sudden act of boldness came from, timidly nodded her head and gently placed her hand on Taeyeon’s proffered arm, allowing herself to be led away, completely forgetting that she had friends who abandoned her.

A few meters away from the scene of the “crime,” under a beautiful oak tree, sat Stephanie Hwang and Choi Sooyoung, phones in one hand and mimosas in the other, huge- grins on their evil faces.

“You think she’ll ever forgive us for ditching her on her birthday?”

Sooyoung snorted and gulped down her drink.

“I’m sure she’ll get over it seeing as how she’s ditching us, too. If not, we have a pretty good arsenal of blackmail material at our disposal if ever she’ll give us a hard time.”

Fany lifted her cup and offered a toast for a very productive day with her partner in crime. Maybe they should start some sort of Cupid services using wedding dresses when they get back home. Seemed effective. Who knows?
