The Ghost's Sadness

Devil's Hour - 3 AM

For the first time ever since her appearance, Im Nayeon felt scared.

She knew clearly who was coming for her .

That loud voice could only belong to one person-

More specifically, one witch.

“H-Hey, Park Jihyo-sshi.” Nayeon greeted before Jihyo even showed up to the scene.

Her words became a warning sign for the easily startled females, thus they finally didn’t let out a scream upon witnessing the supernatural being’s teleportation skill.

Jihyo popped out right before Nayeon’s face.

“What the heck do you think you’re doing, picking fights with demons?!” the large-eyed witch scolded mercilessly in front of the others. “Are you out of your goddamn mind?!”

“I-I can explain…” Nayeon tried to defend herself, yet she knew she could never win against her friend.

Park Jihyo was obviously the more reasonable witch out of the duo.

Although they both were seen as troublemakers within their witch community, Jihyo knew where to draw the line.

Nayeon- obviously- still struggles with it.

“You are grounded, Im Nayeon. You’re coming back with me right this instant.”

“Wow, your mum is fierce.” Jeongyeon couldn’t help but to joke, yet she earned herself a death glare from Jihyo herself.

Excuse you, I’m younger than her!” the witch snapped. “She merely has the IQ of an infant, that’s all.”

“Oof, nice burn.” the barista still managed to laugh even after the brief scolding she received. “I definitely like this witch more.”

“Yah- you’re just going to cheat on me right in front of my face?” Nayeon gasped, making all five other supernatural beings gasp also.

Jeongyeon noticed and violently shook her head.

“I do not recall myself ever agreeing on dating a ing witch.” she hissed in embarrassment. "Guys, learn to not trust her words, thank you very much.”

“Rude.”

“Shut it, buck teeth.”

“Extra rude!!!”

“What do you witches do anyways?” Chaeyoung suddenly asked, unable to hold back her curiosity any longer. “Nayeon-sshi mentioned about being responsible for our area or whatever…”

Jihyo looked at the curious cub before letting out a sigh, unable to act harsh towards a girl who’s eyes were sparkling at her so brightly.

“Witches get assigned to different jobs, but you can think of us two as security guards or something similar to that.” Park Jihyo actually explained, “Each security guard is responsible to look out after a specific area so that they don’t have to run around too much. You guys unfortunately have this idiot in charge.”

“Damn, stop roasting me. I’m sorry for acting harsher than I should, okay?” Nayeon pouted.

Her attention then suddenly shifted towards the drinks that were placed on top of the kitchen counter.

Nayeon’s eyes immediately lit up in joy.

“Can we like, have a toast to call it a truce? Between all of us.”

“Im Nayeon, I swear to Go-”

“Sure! Come sit!” for some reasons it was Chaeyoung who agreed in Dahyun’s place, but the home-owner didn’t seem to mind.

It was better than to let the witches have an on-going battle with the demons, or for the ghosts to forever tremble from both of their presence.

Jeongyeon couldn’t believe what they’ve gotten themselves into, but since Dahyun didn’t disagree to the idea as the master of the house, she had no choice but to let things continue.

The barista assisted with Dahyun with pouring the drinks for each of the girls.

As they prepared a cup for all nine of themselves, Chaeyoung realised something rather important.

“Wait- would you two be able to drink? We can’t even touch you.” the curious one asked the ghosts, who both merely shrugged back.

“Don’t worry, I got you.” Nayeon grinned as she gestured for them to bring her the drinks.

The older witch took two cups before muttering something under her breath, her hands waving directly above them.

There was a slight glow beneath her palms, fascinating everyone but Park Jihyo.

After a few seconds of undecipherable mumblings, she handed the drinks to the ghosts.

They were capable of holding onto the human’s plastic cups now.

“Woah- what did you do?” Jeongyeon marvelled in awe.

“Who cares? All that matters is now that they can drink with us.” Nayeon simply grinned back before checking to see if everyone had a drink in their hands.

Although she had first appeared to drag her fellow witch’s back, even Jihyo found herself staying for the truce.

She also has a special soft side for her friend, no matter how much trouble she gets themselves in.

“Cheers, to not killing each other!” Nayeon shrieked in joy before downing her cup in one continuous gulp.

Jeongyeon looked at her weirdly after merely taking one sip. “Dude, are you trying to get wasted tonight or what?”

“Sorry, she’s borderline an alcoholic.” Jihyo shook her head, but she soon let out a high-pitched squeal as Nayeon squeezed one of her cheeks- hard.

“You dare to spread false information about me, right in front of my face?” Nayeon sneered, “Remember I’m still your unnie, Jihyo-ah.”

“Then freaking act like one…” the younger witch muttered under her breath, but her still ended up getting assaulted- this time with a kick.

The other girls simply laughed at the two girl’s comedic interactions.

As they chatted on with more rounds of drinks, Dahyun took notice on how Tzuyu hasn’t gotten a refill for her cup yet.

On the other hand, Jeongyeon, Nayeon, and Jihyo seemed to have finished two bottles all by themselves.

“You don’t like to drink, Tzuyu?” the home-owner asked, wanting to care for her.

She caught sight of the ghost’s cheeks blush a little.

“… I’ve actually never drank before.” the ghost confessed, making all the other girls gasp audibly.

“How come?!” Chaeyoung questioned, unable to believe her ears.

Tzuyu simply stared back at them while her cheeks gradually turned redder.

It was Sana who stepped in to help her out.

“Chewy died when she was 18 years old, so she never reached the legal drinking age!” Sana explained ever so casually.

The others didn’t really know how to react to the sentence.

Despite acknowledging the fact that they were ghosts, they tend to forget that the two girls had actually passed away.

The sudden realisation made the other females within the room a little uneasy and awkward-

Except for a single girl who didn’t give a flipping as usual.

“How did you guys even die?” Nayeon blurted out just as casually as Sana did, not sure whether it came from the alcohol in her system or she was just that straightforward of a person.

Her friend immediately smacked her loudly on the back of the head, the force almost making her spill her drink.

“How dare you ask something like that, Im Nayeon?!” Jihyo scolded, yet she heard Sana laugh light-heartedly as her response, surprising the ones around her.

“It’s okay! Please don’t feel bad for us. We’ve acknowledged our death for decades now!” the ghost was even capable of smiling brightly at the rest of the girls.

Even Tzuyu didn’t seem to be bothered that much.

It was incredibly weird for the remaining seven girls to watch them act so calm about it since they couldn’t relate at all.

They were somewhat thankful that they weren’t offended from the question though.

“I love how at parties you’re supposed to tell ghost stories, but here you have a ghost telling you her human story.” Sana joked, successfully making the others laugh. “Would you like to go, or should I?” she asked her friend.

“Go ahead. I’m not an entertaining storyteller.” Tzuyu merely shrugged before taking a small sip of her cup, making a face right afterwards.

Mina giggled softly from seeing her reaction and couldn’t help but to give her head a gentle pat.

Tzuyu looked at the demon in shock at first, unable to take in the fact that an actual demon was acting nice, but soon she got used to it and even leaned into the touch.

She had missed receiving affection from people- other than Sana.

The older ghost cleared out before beginning her story-telling session.

Dahyun gulped as she was really terrified of ghost stories- even though it was technically Sana’s life story.

The home-owner scooched closer to Momo subconsciously as she would like the comfort of someone else’s warmth.

Momo found her heartbeat racing-

From both having her crush snuggling closer to herself plus the fact that a ghost was about to tell them how she had died.

“So! It was a fine spring day, like any other day.” Sana began, making the other girls listen to her sweet voice attentively. “Everything had occurred just as usual. I worked as a waitress at a local family restaurant while Chewy went to school as a high school senior- ah by the way, we lived together in this exact house as housemates after I had moved to Korea from Japan, while Chewy came from Taiwan!”

“Wait- you’re Japanese?!” Momo gasped with her hands clasped over . “So are Mina and I!”

“Oh my gosh, really?!” Sana squealed in delight, “Where are you guys from?!”

“Kyoto!” Momo grinned.

“Kobe, but I was born in Texas.” Mina smiled shyly.

“I’m from Osaka- wait you’re born in America?!” Sana gasped in awe, “That’s so cool!”

“Don’t stray too far from your story please, I’m still anticipating for the details.” Nayeon reminded playfully, making Sana apologise sheepishly before refocusing back to her story-telling.

“Okay- ah, where was I?”

“We became housemates.” Tzuyu kindly reminded.

“Ah yes. I purchased this house alone but I wanted someone to split the bills with me since I was a broke girl. I was also incredibly lonely due to moving into a foreign country all by myself, but thankfully a fresh teen Chewy entered my life soon after I started looking for a housemate! Anyways, we lived together under this same roof for around five years until that day came.”

The rest of the girls were incredibly serious as they listened on to the ghost’s voice, not a single person dared to interrupt-

Well, for now.

“I got home from work and Chewy was already fast asleep in her room since it was pretty late. I decided to take a quick shower before heading to bed myself, but right when I was about to head inside the bathroom, I heard a sound.” Sana continued slowly, “It was the sound of our living room window getting picked open. It turned out that there was a burglar breaking into our house. I de-”

BOO!” Jeongyeon suddenly shouted at Nayeon, successfully making her and Jihyo scream their lungs out.

Mina and Momo also flinched simultaneously from the barista’s sudden loud voice, both of their hearts racing incredibly fast.

Dahyun and Chaeyoung instantly gave their embarrassing friend a smack on the head each.

The poor victim to Jeongyeon’s childish prank actually started sobbing from getting so surprised, to which Jihyo shoved some tissues onto her damp cheeks.

After making sure everyone had calmed down from the interruption, Sana cleared out once more before resuming back to the story.

“I instantly thought of Chewy since her bedroom was the closest to the living room, so I instinctively grabbed my baseball bat from my room and went towards the source of the sound. Little did I know that the man had a pistol!” she suddenly burst out laughing from her own story, flabbergasting the other girls incredibly.

“H-How is that a laughing matter, Sana?!” Dahyun chocked from her drink slightly.

Sana had to take a few deep breathes to calm herself down enough to speak properly again.

“B-Because I clutched onto a stupid bat w-while the guy simply went ‘pew’ and I died!” Sana couldn’t stop her laughing fit. “C-Chewy, can you continue for me? I-I need a time out.” the ghost wheezed before vanishing without another word.

The seven girls could only look at Tzuyu with mixed feelings, mostly the ones of confusion.

The younger ghost let out a small sigh.

“So yeah, I heard the gun shot and found her dead on the living room floor. The guy instantly spotted me and chose to tackle me down since he didn’t have time to reload his gun, and eventally he choked me to death.” Tzuyu finished her part of the story speedily and emotionlessly, making most of the girls’ mouth dangle open in shock. “… What? I told you I at story-telling.”

Unlike what the young ghost that thought, they were actually stunned by how she was capable of remaining so calm despite experiencing and remembering such a terrifying experience.

Nayeon’s sobs got louder now that she felt sad for the young ghost.

Jihyo was incredibly upset from hearing such a tragedy yet she was too busy wiping away her fellow witch’s snot to react properly.

Mina had her hand placed above Tzuyu’s thigh as they both sat on the ground, squeezing it slightly as a gesture of sympathy.

Momo had been covering with both hands ever since Sana revealled her death.

Jeongyeon’s body seemed to have froze itself upon taking in such a shocking story.

Chaeyoung’s playfulness had died down as she clutched onto her cup tightly.

Dahyun was now on the verge of tears.

The current home-owner had no idea the ghosts that had once lived within the exact same location had their lives ended in such brutal ways.

No wonder their souls weren’t capable of passing on in peace.

It triggered something new within Dahyun’s mind.

“You know why Sana-unnie disappeared?” Tzuyu suddenly spoke up, snapping the girls out of it and refocusing back to her voice. “She only displays her happy side to people- which you should all notice by now- so now that she’s crying she chose to vanish away until she’s all good to go again.” the tall ghost revealed, triggering Dahyun’s tears to drop from the brim of her eyes.

Mina also had tears forming in her eyes now, making them look like shining diamonds.

“The poor girl was replacing her sobs with laughter, huh.” Jihyo huffed solemnly.

“S-She’s crying somewhere, right now?” Momo choked on her own sadness, trying her best to look around in hopes her demi-demon status could somehow grant her the ability to dig out ghosts from their hiding spots.

“She’s probably in her room- which is your current bathroom, Kim Dahyun.” Tzuyu answered, “Although this house has been reconstructed and renovated millions of times ever since we lived here, in our vision everything’s still in its original spot.”

Dahyun immediately stood herself up and dashed straight into the bathroom, abruptly leaving her guests alone in the living room.

“Welp, this party got dark and sad real quick.” Jeongyeon huffed as she poured everyone another round of liquor, knowing that they need it.

“Cheers to that.” Tzuyu surprisingly was the one to chug down her cup this time.

The rest of the girls followed suit, all hoping that the alcohol could soon blur out the sadness of the past.
