Their Mutual Struggles

Devil's Hour - 3 AM

a/n:

For the JeongMi and MiTzu shippers who got lured in from the tags.

Once again I'm sorry LOL.

“Hello, what may I ge- huh?”

Jeongyeon paused mid-sentence after she took a look at the customer’s face.

She was once again working alone at 3 AM.

Not a single person had entered the café in five hours-

Not until she dropped by.

“Hello, Jeongyeon-sshi.” the girl smiled softly.

“Mina! What are you doing here?” the barista gasped, yet she found herself smiling back soon afterwards.

It has been quite a while ever since Mina’s first visit at the coffee shop.

Since they’ve been through a lot of stuff with the other girls, there was no longer a weird tension in the air.

The human could still recall the uneasiness she felt when Mina had asked for Dahyun’s address out of the blue.

Now she was actually pretty happy to see her.

“Can I get an Americano, please?”

“Are you asking me to treat you?”

“Of course not. Why would I?”

“Oh, sorry. I guess it’s a weird instinctual reply thanks to a certain someone…” Jeongyeon grinned sheepishly. “Anyways, is that all ma’am?” she returned to her barista-mode, joking around with the girl.

“Yes, thank you.” Mina giggled back as she handed her a bill.

Jeongyeon proceeded to make her drink while humming along to the song that blasted out from the speakers.

Mina took the closest seat to the till.

“Jeongyeon-sshi, I actually came in hopes to seek for advice.” Mina suddenly spoke up as Jeongyeon approached her with both a drink and a small plate of dessert in hand.

The demon took notice of the slice of cake she didn’t order, resulting her to tilt her head in confusion.

“It’s on me. For dealing with our sh*t during that one random gathering at Dahyun’s.” Jeongyeon chuckled. “I felt like death the next morning- and so did the witches who surprisingly slept on the sofa with me, so I figured the three of us were quite a handful that night.”

“Not at all. Even when you did bother people, you guys bothered yourselves.” Mina laughed, “But thank you. I’ll eat it deliciously.”

Jeongyeon returned back to the till as she couldn’t abandon her responsibility for the special customer.

She leaned onto the counter, still looking at the nice demon.

“So? What was it that you were talking about? You needed help?”

“Ah, yes.” Mina answered after taking a sip of her drink, though she instantly became timid again after thinking about the reason to her sudden visit. “I uh… came to you since you’re one of Chaeyoung’s closest friends and I figured that you’d probably know enough about her in order to hel-

“Mina-ya, you gotta raise up the volume if you’d like me to understand you.” Jeongyeon snickered from the flustered-looking girl.

The barista had developed a soft spot for the demon after getting to know her a little better.

Mina was the type of person- well, demon- that just made Jeongyeon feel like protecting.

“Try again, slowly.”

Mina took a deep breath before she looked into Jeongyeon’s eyes.

The barista flashed a comforting smile.

The demon nodded in acceptance.

“I… I like Chaeyoungie.”

Jeongyeon didn’t respond at all for five seconds until had dropped open while the size of her eyes tripled.

“YOU LIKE CHAEYOUNG?!” she couldn’t help but repeat, just to make sure she had heard it correctly.

Mina was blushing furiously, giving the human the answer she needed without speaking.

The barista’s smile was now wider than ever.

“Oh my gosh- that’s great!”

“But I have a problem, Jeongyeon-sshi.” Mina stammered back, “I’m a demon, remember?”

“So? Momo exists.” Jeongyeon blinked, “You guys can still have perfectly fine.”

“T-That is not the issue!” Mina cried in embarrassment, making the teasing girl laugh out loud.

“I know, I know. You’re worried about the future, aren’t you?”

“Yes. My parents are very strict and protective when it comes to our royal heritage. They would definitely not allow for our blood to get ‘damaged’ from me being with a human being. They absolutely despises demi-demons.” Mina let out a sigh.

“You’re a royalty?” the barista exclaimed with curiosity, “No wonder you’re so elegant and proper.”

“Y-Yes, something like that.” the demon bowed her head down timidly. “It’s quite a burden to bear. There’s a lot of expectations put upon me.”

“Well, ‘em.” Jeongyeon blurted out loud, making Mina bring her head back up to look at her with surprised eyes. “It’s your life, Mina. You have all the rights to be with whoever the heck you want to be with.”

“B-But as a demon-”

“Chaeyoung wouldn’t mind. Have you seen that girl’s reaction to anything supernatural? Heck- she’d love you even more because you’re a demon.” Jeongyeon chuckled.

“I just- I really don’t want to ruin her life with me entering it…”

“Hul, you’re thinking way too much…” the barista couldn’t stand it any longer and made her way back to Mina’s table.

She swiftly took a seat across from Mina and picked up the fork she had never touched.

“You’ve proved it yourself, how demons aren’t as deadly nor evil as we thought. There’s absolutely no reason to beat yourself down for who you are since you’re a super nice girl, okay?” she comforted while stabbing a chunk of the cake, bringing it up to Mina’s lips.

The demon hesitated shyly but eventually accepted it, chewing slowly while Jeongyeon gave her a gentle smile.

“A relationship consists of two parties- two people, and that would be you and Chaeyoung only. No one else can have a say on whatever the you two decide to do with yourselves. It’s a private matter and it will forever remain that way. As long as you and Chaeyoung are happy, there’s nothing to be stressed about.”

“I understand, but what if I-” Mina’s words got cut off as Jeongyeon shoved another forkful of cake into , making her blush in embarrassment.

She quickly chewed and swallowed in order to comment again, this time making sure her lips were out of the fork’s reach.

“What if she doesn’t like me?”

Jeongyeon stared back at the girl before her, absolutely dumbfounded.

“Are you being serious?”

“Y-Yes?”

“Are you actually super dense, or are you kidding me?”

Mina blinked back at her in confusion.

Jeongyeon knew the answer and face-palmed herself loudly.

“Well that’s an unexpected trait of a royal demon.” the barista snickered, “Chaeyoung literally shoots hearts out of her eyeballs whenever she sees you, don’t worry.”

“… R-Really?”

“Literally everyone but you knows who she likes. Even my mum knows just from watching her talk about you.” Jeongyeon revealed, “You’re insanely dense when it comes to this sort of stuff, huh. Guess I learnt something new today.” she reached a hand out and pinched Mina’s cheeks playfully.

Just then, the wind chime of the front door rang.

The two heard some footsteps followed by a scoff.

“So you are cheating on me.”

Mina instinctively flinched upon seeing the familiar girl who instantly strutted towards the two.

Slamming a palm down onto the table, Nayeon stared straight at Mina’s face.

The demon’s body trembled slightly as the witch eyed her up and down, her piercing gaze gradually arching into a crescent shape.

“Jihyo was right, you are super pretty.” Nayeon now smirked. “I wouldn’t mind if we all started a poly relationship- then I could also cheat on you with Mina.” she had turned to face Jeongyeon, making the barista’s eyes widen to the point it seemed like her eyeballs were about to pop out.

Mina could only look back and forth between the two.

It took her a while before the light bulb within her mind lit up.

“You two got together?!” Mina gasped in awe, her eyes sparkling in delight.

“That’s right babe, so back off or join us. There’s no other choices.”

“I’m so sorry that you still have to deal with our bullsh*t, Mina-sshi. Want another cake?”

“Yah- so you’re just here feeding another woman generously and wouldn’t treat your girlfriend to a strawberry shortcake?”

“Im Nayeon, we weren’t dating back then.”

“It’s never too late, you know.”

“Bug off.”

Mina smiled softly at the two bickering females before her.

She wondered whether she could experience the same kind of joy too.

“So what do you want to know?” Jeongyeon asked the demon after fetching Nayeon a piece of strawberry shortcake, finally giving in. “Chaeng’s like a brother to me, so I should know enough to help you prepare.”

“Oh yeah, that one’s a feisty one too- though she lacks the height to look intimidating.” Nayeon snickered, making Mina pout slightly.

“She’s cute that way…”

“Oh, what is this I sense?” the witch wriggled her brows, “Are you trying to give Momo company by making demi-demons yourself?”

“Get your head out of the gutter, you nasty.” Jeongyeon scolded, but Mina raised her eyebrow with a grin back at her.

“Speak for yourself, Yoo Jeongyeon… you nasty.” Mina copied, resulting Nayeon to burst out into laughter.

“Give up Chaeyoung and come to us, sweetie. I promise I’ll treat you right.” the witch reached out a hand and Mina’s chin, making Jeongyeon slap it away.

“Let us focus on her real concern, alright? She’s really stressed about this.”

“My bad, go ahead.” Nayeon raised her hands in surrender before picking up her fork.

She dug into her free treat as the other two discussed on, mainly with the human trying her best to reassure that no matter what Mina does, she’d definitely succeed.

“If you’d want to be extra sure, just go talk to Dahyun.” Jeongyeon then advised. “Those two have been best friends ever since they were in junior high. I only started hanging out with them when they were high school freshmen.”

“Dahyun-sshi doesn’t seem to be very fond of demons herself though…” Mina mumbled, causing Nayeon to choke from her slice of cake from bursting out into sudden laughter.

The two waited patiently for the witch to calm down to listen to what she has to say.

“Yah- I had thought my honey was a dense idiot, but you seriously just took it to another level.” Nayeon snickered uncontrollably. “Can’t you tell that she’s in love with a demon herself?!”

“S-She is?!” Mina’s eyes widened in surprise. “Who?!”

“If you hadn’t been focusing on Chaeng throughout the whole gathering last time, maybe you would’ve noticed how Dahyun had been snuggling up to your best friend.” Jeongyeon also chuckled at the oblivious girl, wriggling her eyebrows.

“So she likes Momo as well…” Mina now beamed happily, placing her hand onto her chest. “Thank goodness…”

“Anyways, back to our main topic. Do go talk to Dahyun as she could help you prepare on how to confess or something. I’m not really good with that sort of stuff so I’m not much of a help anymore.” Jeongyeon said as Mina finished her drink.

“What do you mean you’re not good? I found it heart-throbbing when you screa-”

“SO GOOD LUCK, MINA-YA. I’m rooting for you!” Jeongyeon slapped a hand right onto Nayeon’s mouth to mute out her next words, forcing out a grin for the giggling demon.

“Thank you so much, Jeongyeon-sshi.”

Nayeon then stuck out her tongue to the barista’s hand.

“EW, GROSS!” Jeongyeon cried in disgust while wiping the saliva onto Nayeon's arm.

“Serves you right for trying to silence me. No one can stop Im Nayeon.”

“Gosh, why on Earth did I agree to be with you…”

“Because you truly love me. I’m just that irresistable.”

“Mina, is it too late to start chasing after you?”

“You’re actually going to cheat on me right in front of my face?!”

“Serves you right for my hand.”

“But hey, you tasted delicious.”

“S-Shut up!”

Myoui Mina never knew she could experience such happiness in her life.

To be laughing with humans and even other supernatural beings seemed impossible at first, yet there she was doing exactly that.

She was incredibly grateful to have stumbled across her two adorable composition classmates.

Without them, she’d never get to meet all her new friends.

She’d never have found her first crush.

When Jeongyeon had suggested for Mina to meet Dahyun, she didn’t mean straight away.

But the naïve demon did just that.

It was almost four in the morning and she somehow thought the university student would be still awake.

After saying goodbye to the two in the coffee shop, Mina had teleported herself into the human’s living room-

Just to surprise herself by seeing Tzuyu alone on the sofa.

“Oh- hi.” the demon smiled timidly, “Is Dahyun-sshi…” her words trailed off by themselves after she noticed the redness of Tzuyu’s eyes and nose.

She instantly went to sit herself down beside the ghost, her kind instincts making her engulf the young one into her arms.

Tzuyu immediately sobbed louder, leaning into the warm hug.

“W-What’s wrong?” Mina tried her best to help despite her timid and awkward self.

Usually she’s the one who gets comforted by someone else- mostly by Momo.

Tzuyu took a few seconds to calm herself down before pulling away from the gentle demon, wiping her tears away with the back of her sleeves.

“D-Dahyun gave me something…” the younger girl choked, pointing to the opened envelop on the coffee table.

Mina’s eyes followed Tzuyu’s finger and saw the unfolded letter.

She scanned it through briefly, gasping from the final words.

“Sana…”

“I know. We both knew- Sana-unnie and I.” the ghost let out a shaky sigh. “We had a ‘some’ relationship despite never saying a single thing for years. Our friendship just somehow escalated into it naturally.”

“Was she the one who expressed it first…?” Mina asked cautiously, not knowing whether she should be asking in the first place.

Tzuyu didn’t seem to mind her prying into her business.

The older female was trying to comfort her.

“Yup, I sensed it after living with her for two years.” Tzuyu smiled faintly from recalling their past. “She start conducting unnecessary skin-ship with me, but I had only thought of it as her treating me like her own daughter or something. She really put a lot of effort in caring for me since I was really young when we first met.”

“But then you realised your own feelings for her?”

“I guess so, but I can’t grasp the exact moment it happened. Before I knew it I had started to enjoy her skin-ship more and more, and even craved for it sometimes.” Tzuyu blushed from saying it out loud.

“So… why are you crying about her letter? Does she not feel the same way anymore…?”

“That’s not it.” Tzuyu shook her head slowly, “She has never changed- we never changed, ever since we left for the spirit world together…”

Mina simply waited for her to continue, her hand grasping securely onto Tzuyu’s to spread her warmth and care.

Tzuyu took her time to muster enough energy to reveal her problem to the patient demon.

“You know why ghosts remain on Earth, Mina-unnie?”

Mina blinked from the unexpected question. “No, I don’t.”

“It’s because of their regrets.” the ghost revealed, “Whether it’s something that they couldn’t do in time or an issue that hadn’t been resolved before they died, we are stuck here for eternality if we’re not ready to move on from our past lives.”

“So you’re saying that you and Sana both have an unsolved issue to fix before you can rest in peace?”

“And you’ve already witnessed Sana-unnie’s key to moving on.”

“E-Eh?” Mina couldn’t help but to mutter out in confusion.

It took her a few seconds before she finally solved the puzzle.

She slowly turned her head around to look at the old letter again.

Tzuyu nodded from her gesture.

“That’s right. That’s most likely the regret that’s forcing her to be stuck here.”

“To not have given it to you and let her feelings known…” Mina gasped quietly. “But now that Dahyun-sshi has delivered it to you in her place, can’t she move on at last?”

“And we’re back to my problem, unnie...” Tzuyu’s body trembled once more as the emotions returned, making Mina wrap her arm around her slim waist. “Half an hour ago I had just begged Kim Dahyun not to tell her about it yet.”

“Even when Sana-sshi had asked her to do so and she had truly completed her favour?” Mina blinked, “Why…?”

Tzuyu let out another deep, shaky sigh.

Her hand grasping tightly onto the fabric of her trousers.

“… I’m not ready for her to leave me for good…”
