The Demon's Explanation

Devil's Hour - 3 AM

“WAIT- WHAT?!” Dahyun couldn’t help but scream in shock.

It has been a while ever since she had been that loud in public.

Most of the time she was the sensible one who had to control the volume of her two loud friends.

“Are you for real? You’re actually a demon?!” Chaeyoung also screamed, her eyes filled with both fascination and shock.

Her crush turned out to be a supernatural being.

It made her fall deeper in love-

Well, she wasn’t sure whether it was a good idea to fall for a demon, but she couldn’t help it.

Anything about the supernatural fascinated her.

She’s probably the most willing to die from the hands or chomps of Mina out of the human trio.

Mina’s face blushed furiously before her two classmates who were losing their sh*t.

She had no idea what to do since she had made sure to blend in within the humans while she’s getting her university degree.

She was determined to keep her true identity a secret, yet there she was facing two humans who had somehow discovered it.

“So do you really eat humans?” Chaeyoung then asked out of nowhere, completely forgetting the fact that Mina was still their school’s idol. “If you’d choose either one of us to eat, who would you pick?”

“E-Eh?”

“Chaeyoung- shut up.” Dahyun hissed, worried that she’d accidentally trigger the female’s inner demon and devour them whole. “Sorry Mina-sshi, please just ignore us. I’m more than willing to pretend that this never happened.”

“Well I’m not. Tell me more!” the other human whined as she wriggled away from her friend’s grasp who tried to pull her away. “I don’t mind that you’re a demon. I still want to get to know you, Mina-sshi!”

You’re the one that called her dangerous a few minutes ago, pabo-ya!”

“That was when I was being defensive okay? I was fearing for your life!”

“Still- never do that again! If you ever die because of me I’ll get myself a Ouija board just to scold your ghost-!”

“Wha- why the heck would you scold me if I saved your life with mine?!”

“Because I don’t want you to!”

“You weird albino eagle!”

“Stupid tiger cub!”

The demon couldn’t respond to the situation she was witnessing.

Out of the few humans who had also discovered her identity, none of them were like these weird girls.

Without a single hesitation, the others ran for their lives.

They wouldn’t spare her a single second to explain herself.

To explain that she was harmless.

To prove that she wanted to live peacefully among humans.

That she wasn’t like the stereotypical demons.

It was the reason Mina chose to remain quiet most of the time.

She was done being misjudged.

She was done with being looked at with trembling eyes as if she was a murderer, when in reality she wouldn’t hurt a fly.

She didn’t want anyone to fear her for her terrifying and seemingly bloodthirsty identity.

She chose to hide away her true self.

But it seems like a particular girl wanted to discover that side of herself.

To dig out what she had buried.

To be willing to get to know the true her.

She was a first.

Son Chaeyoung turned out to be a special one.

Before any of the girls could continue, the chime of the school bell echoed throughout the campus.

Mina instantly panicked as she was a straight A student who had never been late to any of her classes.

She didn’t realise they had spent all their lunch break dealing with misunderstandings and weird chaos.

She also knew that the curious humans before her wouldn’t let her go so easily without giving them some answers.

“I-I’ll answer any questions of yours after school. I must get to class now.” Mina hastily pulled out a pen from her pocket before she grabbed hold onto Dahyun’s hand.

She proceeded to scribbled down some numbers onto her pale skin.

Dahyun tried her best to remain still despite the tickling sensation that made her want to wriggle herself free.

“Please send me a text so I can contact you about where we should meet up.” the demon gave the girl a quick smile before running away.

The duo were left to stand on the rooftop by themselves.

They were both too dazed by what had occurred to move a single muscle.

They couldn’t care less that they were now extremely late to their next classes.

Dahyun stared at the ink on her skin.

She has now obtained the other goddess’s number randomly.

Despite the hundreds of people who would donate a full kidney just to be in her shoes, she didn’t know how to react about her situation.

“… Unnie, you should buy some lottery tickets.” Chaeyoung slowly mumbled out, still star-struck. “People would kill to get both of their numbers, and you somehow managed to do just that within 24 hours.”

“Well, I sure hope that I won’t get murdered anytime soon.” Dahyun blinked blankly with her reply. “Not when we just confirmed the fact that Myoui Mina is indeed a demon.”

“Remember to send her that text. I’ll write down all the questions I want to ask her.”

“You’re going to fill out a whole notebook, aren’t you?”

“I’ll try not to, but no promises.”

“Well... this was an interesting lunch.”

“I don’t even need to eat anything. My excitement for later on is keeping me going just fine.”

“I’m probably going to get something to eat though. I used up all my energy coming up here since I really thought I was going to die today.”

“Oh- then can you fetch me iced coffee while you’re at it?”

“Are you going to pay me back?”

“Yah unnie, I was willing to sacrifice my life for you back there. Can’t you treat me to a drink for once?!”

“… Fine.”

“God, I’ve never felt so happy to be alive.”

“Good for you, bud.”

Eventually leaving the rooftop and splitting paths, Chaeyoung dashed for her life to her class while Dahyun truly skipped her class and left to fill up her stomach at the nearest café.

As the pale student waited in line, she quickly saved the number into her phone before the ink accidentally get smudged- which happened soon right after.

She also sent out the text so that Mina could obtain her number.

Hello Mina-sshi, this is Kim Dahyun.” her message simply read, not knowing what else to say.

It was when she had finished most of her food she received a reply.

Just like Mina’s note, the text was just as straightforward and short.

Hello Dahyun-sshi. Please meet me by the front gates at 4:30 PM.

Understood, see you then!

See you.

After delivering Chaeyoung’s drink and spacing out for another hour and a half, the time has come to meet up with Myoui Mina.

Chaeyoung was the first to arrive since Dahyun had relayed Mina’s message to her during her coffee delivery.

She literally sprinted her way to the front gate out of excitement, causing her to be there ten minutes early.

The next to get to the meeting spot was Dahyun.

The final one was of course, Myoui Mina.

The duo almost couldn’t recognise her until they realised that she was actually walking towards them.

The popular female had changed her attire completely and had put on a baseball cap with all of her hair stuffed within.

She had also covered her face with a mask, making her look like a celebrity in disguise to avoid unwanted attention.

… Well, technically she was doing just that.

As soon as Mina made herself to the girls’ side, she immediately grabbed hold onto each of their hands.

“Let’s hurry before people find out- especially Momo-unnie.” Mina whispered, “I can’t let anyone follow us, not when we’re supposed to talk about that.”

“O-Okay.” Dahyun gulped from having her hand wrapped within Mina’s.

The two humans let themselves get dragged away from their school, and eventually they ended up in a small café which neither of them had ever seen before.

It was in a very small alleyway, making it incredibly hard to find.

“Mina-chan!” the barista immediately greeted upon seeing their entrance. “I didn’t realise you had friends other than Momo. What a pleasant surprise!”

“Shush, oppa.” Mina hissed in embarrassment. “We’ll be on the second floor.”

“Alright, I’ll bring you ladies the menu in just a bit.”

Following behind Mina’s footsteps, the trio found themselves a seat.

The whole café was dimply lit and had a posh British vibe to it.

With furniture and displays that made them feel as if they were in a foreign country, the humans couldn’t help to be intrigued by everything.

“Holy crap, why isn’t this place built on a busier street? It’s popularity would explode.” Chaeyoung marvelled in awe while admiring the decorations.

“It’s because this café is owned and mainly serves demons, like myself.”

Dahyun chocked on her water from taking in Mina’s words, making Chaeyoung pat on her back in hopes to clear out her windpipe.

“A-Are we even allowed to be here then?” Dahyun choked out nervously, “We’re obviously not demons…”

“You’ll be completely fine. We’re not as bloodthirsty as you may think.” Mina giggled softly.

Without a warning, the previous barista had teleported to their table with the menus, making the humans scream in terror.

“Oops, sorry girlies. I didn’t realise you’re not one of us until now.” the man chuckled. “I didn’t think Mina-chan was capable of becoming friends with humans since she barely interacts with any of them.”

“S-Stop exposing me, oppa!”

“Alright alright, my bad.” he gave the pouting girl a pat on the head before leaving them be.

They spent a few minutes looking through the menu before placing down their orders and finally resuming back to their conversation.

“So… demons aren’t as dangerous as everyone thinks?” Chaeyoung was the first to break the silence.

Dahyun stared at Mina attentively, curious about the fact also.

Mina blushed from their glistening eyes as they waited for her answer.

“Y-Yes. There’s a big misunderstanding about us modern-day demons.” she began to address, “We don’t murder anyone, and we merely live with the powers that were gifted to us naturally upon birth. I was raised to live a normal human life myself.”

“So you don’t know how demons truly act yourself?” Dahyun gasped in surprise.

“Many of us newer generations don’t, yes.”

“Are there ancient- demons out there who’d still feast on human flesh?” Chaeyoung shot out another question, incredibly absorbed into the topic.

“Um… there’s a slight possibility, I suppose.”

“DAEBAK!”

“Oh God.”

“Please don’t be afraid! There hasn’t been an incident regarding to demons murdering humans for a while now.” Mina quickly reassured the trembling pale student. “We’ve all been trying our best to not cause any trouble, or else we will be punished ourselves.”

“Can demons die, or are you guys immortals like ghosts?” it was Dahyun’s turn to ask.

“Unlike our great ancestors, we are mortal.”

“Do you have horns and wings?!” Chaeyoung’s eyes sparkled in curiosity, leaning in closer towards the table.

“U-Um… no and yes.” Mina smiled sheepishly at the hyper student, “We don’t have horns but we do have wings. It’s just we tend to get them removed as soon as we’re birthed since we’d like to blend in with you guys.”

“That is so freakin’ cool! Are there scars on your back where your wings used to be?!”

“Y-Yes.”

“Oh my gosh, can I see?!”

“Chaeyoung! Behave!” Dahyun snapped while giving her friend a nudge. “You’re being rude!”

“It’s okay. It’s the first time that someone had been so curious about me.” Mina smiled softly back, confusing the two girls before her.

“What do you mean? Half of the school’s madly in love with you. Of course they’d want to know more about you.” Dahyun tilted her head.

“Well… they wouldn’t if they knew my true identity.”

“They’re simply .” Chaeyoung grinned, earning another nudge from a glaring Dahyun. “I love the supernatural, so of course I’d love to know everything about you!”

“You’re very welcome to kick us out at any time though, Mina-sshi.” Dahyun quickly added, “I can’t guarantee you that I’d be able to control this one’s curiosity.”

“It’s completely fine, don’t worry.” Mina found herself giggling from the girls’ behaviour.

They were interesting humans unlike any other she had met.

“I’m actually happy to be able to have a casual conversation with people like this. I didn’t know that it was possible for humans to not fear me.”

“I mean, I’m still a little scared of you- sorry.” Dahyun admitted with a shy grin, “But trust in Chaeyoung. She’s seriously nuts for anything supernatural. She even befriended the ghosts in my house.”

“Ghosts, you say?”

“Yeah! Before you confirmed your identity yourself, we wanted to invite you over so the ghosts could tell us whether you’re a real demon or not.” Chaeyoung revealed, gaining Mina’s full attention.

“Speaking of which, how did you two discover my true identity?”

“Our friend Jeongyeon-unnie told us. She said she met you at her work and a witch popped out of nowhere and kicked you out.” Dahyun explained. “Apparently the witch warned her about how you were going to kill her.”

“I-It’s a misunderstanding!” Mina quickly defended bashfully, “I had no intentions of harming your friend!”

“Yeah sorry, I attacked you today believing in the witch’s words.” Chaeyoung scratched her head in embarrassment. “I just found it suspicious since you did leave after the witch had told you to.”

“Oh t-that’s…” Mina’s face turned red once more, her shyness making her struggle with her words.

The two girls merely blinked as they awaited patiently.

“That’s because I’m scared of witches…”

Her voice was so quiet that Chaeyoung and Dahyun could barely catch what she had said.

Luckily they did, and that made their lips arch into a big smile.

They didn’t realise how a demon could be so timid and adorable.

Well, maybe it was just this particular demon.

Only Myoui Mina.

“Why are you scared of them?” Chaeyoung tried to hold back her giggles, amused by the unexpected fact.

“B-Because their magic can kill us, plus they don’t really like us demons to begin with.” Mina confessed with a soft sigh, “Like that witch I had met when I went to ask for help from your friend. She was incredibly harsh towards me when I didn’t even do anything…”

“Why did you go to Jeongyeon-unnie anyways?” Dahyun asked out of curiosity.

The barista then appeared with their drinks, making the humans scream out once more.

Mina couldn’t help but giggle at their reaction.

It took her a while before she was capable of talking again.

“I enjoy strolling around late at night as my skin is sensitive to the sunlight, and I just happened to stumble across her café. I was actually worried about Momo who I knew went to your house, Dahyun-sshi, but she’s the only one who obtained your whereabouts.” Mina explained carefully, “For some reasons Momo wouldn’t pick up her phone and I got anxious, thus I decided to enter the café and ask your friend for your address in hopes I could find her.”

“But then the witch scared you away?” Chaeyoung raised her eyebrow.

“… Yes.” Mina mumbled with flushed cheeks, “In the end I went home and simply waited for her to return.”

“I still can’t believe how we all went through such huge misunderstandings though.” Chaeyoung chuckled light-heartedly, “And the fact that I got to meet three different types of supernatural beings within this month. Damn, the spooky season is truly magical.”

“Good for you, Chaeyoung-sshi.” Mina smiled, “Ah, by the way Dahyun-sshi, may I ask you a favour?” she then suddenly asked, making the pale student flinch in her seat.

“Y-Yes?”

“If you don’t mind, can Momo and I visit your house someday?”

“W-What?!” Dahyun then spluttered while Chaeyoung squealed in delight, “I mean, of course- but why all of a sudden…?”

Mina’s lips arched into a shy smile.

“Momo had always wanted to meet ghosts.”
