Hysteria
SmudgesLydia POV
I want to open my eyes, but I don’t have the strength to do so. I can’t see but I can hear. I hear machines beeping, feel the needles beneath my skin and most importantly, I feel his touch. Johnny’s voice and touch came in a pair, he’ll always hold my hand softly and whisper soft words to me. Instead of the usual fear or hatred I feel for him, I feel safe now. When it’s quiet, I remember the last thing that happened before everything went black. The images flash in mind as quickly as the actual event happened. I remember losing control of the car, I remember skidding on that cold winter night and I remember crashing into the grey concrete and looking at my own blood before blacking out. But when he’s around, I focus on his voice and they all disappear.
Today again, he comes and holds my hand. He tries to talk to me again and I didn’t miss a single word he said. This time, I will myself to open my eyes and it happens. Although it takes me some effort, light comes through. It starts out as some slits but before the harsh white beams from the fluorescent lights can hit my eyes, Johnny’s face appears and blocks them out.
“Lydia you’re awake! Ok I’m going to get the doctor, stay right here.”
Like a flustered puppy, he rushes out of the room and down the hallway, the rubber soles of his sneakers making loud squeaking noises against the well-polished floors. He come running back a little while later, with the doctors’ right at his heels.
