Our Sound

Woohyun got off the phone with Boohyun and shoved his hands into his pockets. Today was an exceptionally cold day for the coming spring and he hadn't thought of bringing mittens or a scarf. He had finished school like usual and wanted to take Sunggyu on an apology date for when they were interrupted in the kitchen. It had been a few weeks since they last talked in person. They would text each other often, now that Boohyun came back from Japan and work shifts returned to normal, but Woohyun's day was usually filled with college and his job so they had little time to actually meet.

Woohyun pushed his hands further into his jean's pockets until his wrists were hardly visible. He was standing in front of Sunggyu's college in a spot that his boyfriend could see him once he walked out, unlike last time. The sun barely warmed his shoulders as he stood away from the shade, despite it being nearly cloudless in the sky. Woohyun whipped out his phone for a quick check of the time before immediately burying his freezing hand back down his pocket.

"Three twenty-eight…" He said out loud to himself. Only two more minutes until his boyfriend would come strolling out of the gates. Woohyun waited patiently, going over his plans for the date in his mind. Two minutes flew by quickly and the first students began to trickle out slowly. Some girls giggled as they passed him and shyly looked away when he met their gazes. Woohyun sighed. What were they, high school students?

Another five minutes passed and still no sign of Sunggyu. Woohyun checked his phone for any texts he might have gotten explaining as to why he would have been late. With nothing new popping up on his screen, Woohyun clicked the power button and examined himself with the dark reflection. He had a lot of time before he went to pick up Sunggyu so he lightly gelled his fringe up in a stylish way, hoping it would add to his plain features. He hadn't dressed any differently than usual but with just that one change, Woohyun had to admit he looked pretty good.

"Oh, Woohyun!" A voice called out. Woohyun put his phone down and scanned the area for his boyfriend, the owner of the voice. Their eyes met and he couldn't help a grin slide over his lips. As Sunggyu walked closer, Woohyun noticed three other men walking along with him. "Are we going right now?" The light haired man asked, balancing his books a little higher on his chest. Woohyun took note of the subtle action and quickly reached out and took some from the pile.

"Yeah, are you ready? Or do you want to hang out with your friends more?" Woohyun questioned, looking back and forth between the new faces. Sunggyu followed his gaze and gasped as if he remembered something.

"Oh right, you guys haven't met yet. Woohyun, these are my friends Heechul, Jaejoong, and the new addition Baekhyun. Guys, this is Woohyun, my boyfriend." Sunggyu introduced, waving one hand around to each person. Woohyun gave a slight nod and matched names with faces. He had heard of Heechul and Jaejoong before through texts when one of them stole Sunggyu's phone. They seemed like nice guys. Woohyun turned to Baekhyun, who was glaring hole into his skull for no reason.

"Uh, hi." The dark haired man greeted awkwardly. Baekhyun's glare never wavered, if fact, his eyes narrowed even more as he eyed the taller man. Not feeling intimidated at all, Woohyun raised an eyebrow at him. The man almost looked familiar, but Woohyun couldn't grasp how he had seen him before. Suddenly, the dark haired man was pulled in for a death-bringing hug. He grunted in surprise as he felt his back give a painful crack.

"Heechul, I think you should let go of him before he dies." Jaejoong said in a monotone voice. Sunggyu let out a laugh as his best friend released a gasping Woohyun and continued to poke around, inspecting every inch of him.

"I'd say you've got a good one. Mysterious, handsome, but most of all, has a nice . Ten out of ten." Heechul stated proudly, high fiving Jaejoong on his way back to Sunggyu's side. Woohyun, finally catching his breath, tilted his head at Heechul's assessment.

"Don't worry, he does that to everyone." Sunggyu smiled at his clueless boyfriend. He then turned to Baekhyun, who must have been unusually quiet, and noticed his expression. "Hey, what's wrong?" Sunggyu asked worriedly, startling the glaring man.

"Oh, nothing. I just got something in my eye." He joked, rubbing at one of his eyes a little. Woohyun could easily tell that was a lie and fought the urge to roll his eyes. Baekhyun grinned happily that the attention was on him before glancing over to Woohyun with coyness evident in his gaze. Something about Baekhyun ticked Woohyun off. The dark haired man slightly frowned at the man, who probably was his elder, before turning to his boyfriend.

"Time to go?" Sunggyu guessed. Woohyun nodded and waited for the light haired man to say goodbye with his three friends before they walked off. As they were about to turn the corner to head in the direction of Sunggyu's house, Woohyun threw a quick glance back at the men who were now conversing among themselves. From that distance, he recognized Baekhyun's slim figure to be the same as the person who was watching them leave a week prior. Silently, he faced forward again and continued to stroll down the sidewalk with Sunggyu's heavy books in his arms, deep in thought.

"So, what's this about? You only texted me that you wanted to take me somewhere." Sunggyu struck up a conversation, noticing the looming tension in the air. Suddenly his eyes lit up and he inhaled sharply. "Are you taking me to another Nell concert?" He asked excitedly, nearly dropping the remaining books in his hands. Woohyun looked over to his boyfriend and laughed at his expression, tongue lightly sweeping over his canine tooth.

"Sadly, I'm not." He said, earning a pout from Sunggyu. "But I am taking you to a movie." Woohyun watched as Sunggyu looked up as if trying to recall recent movie releases. "I was thinking about Your Voice." He suggested. Sunggyu looked at him and tilted his head.

"Sounds interesting. What's it about?"

"I read online that it's about this girl who hears music when she sees certain people. It's a real condition that people have. Synthesizer? Synasti…"

"Synesthesia." Sunggyu corrected. Woohyun nodded.

"Yeah, that. Do you know of it? Sounds like you've heard of it before."

"Synesthesia is something I'm quite familiar with." The light haired man said, looking down at his books. Woohyun felt a strange shift in Sunggyu's mood and decided to change the topic.

"If not then we can go see the new super hero movie." He suggested. Sunggyu quickly shook his head and met Woohyun's gaze.

"No, I want to see that movie. Your Voice, was it?" The light haired man's expression agreed with his words but something still felt suspicious to Woohyun.

"All right. I think the movie starts in an hour."

~~~~~~~~~~
Sunggyu shifted in his spot as he read the entry of the diary. The man on the other side of the bed sniffled a couple of times before returning to a deep sleep. The light haired man closed his eyes for a minute. All this reading in the dark was starting to strain his vision.
In all honesty, Sunggyu hadn't known that Woohyun caught on to his insecurities so early in their relationship. Back then, Sunggyu thought that his whole seeing colors thing would freak Woohyun out, possibly to the point of leaving him. It scared him whenever someone found out about his ability. When Heechul first found out, it was on accident when he snuck up on Sunggyu's conversation with Dongwoo. At first, Heechul didn't believe that such a thing existed, but once he researched it, he told Jaejoong and soon both of them were asking question non-stop. It put Sunggyu on edge that they would get bored of it and lose interest in being his friend.
Sort of a stupid thing to be worried about, Sunggyu knew, but he couldn't help feeling uneasy. Even now, two years later and still going strong, bringing up the topic of his synesthesia bothered him.
Sunggyu crossed his legs and straightened the covers on him to completely cover his body. With a large sigh, he watched as his blue voice floated into the night air, unchanged in color even though it was nearly pitch black around him. His eyes refocused on the words scribbled on the slightly aged pages and began reading once more.
They had ended up watching the movie about the girl who heard music at the sight of someone and Sunggyu had learned a few things about his own condition. Woohyun, as written in the diary, attempted to use this date to make up for their second kiss gone wrong. Of course, he was too hesitant to initiate it and the movie ended before he could even wrap his arm around Sunggyu's seat. Next time, Sunggyu remembered taking note; he'd have to be the first to start something like that.
