I Came, I Saw, I (Haven't) Conquered (Sujeong x Kei)
Avocado Procrastinates
"Sujeong, it's that time of day again!"
Sujeong shrieked at the top of her lungs as her tutor barreled through her door and entered her room, wearing a wide smile on her face - her pretty face, which Sujeong appreciated in its entirety, from the top of that glorious forehead down to that cute, perfect chin. Sujeong would've relished in Kei's appearance more if it hadn't been for the fact that she was her math tutor. And boy, did Sujeong have a dislike for mathematics. She was as passionate in her dislike of the aforementioned subject as much as she was passionate about Kei's amazing face.
It didn't help either that Kei was particularly insistent on making Sujeong enjoy math. It was one thing to teach her how to work through problems and such, but it was a totally different thing to try to make that terrible process fun. Math and fun? Math, fun? For Sujeong, the highest level of fun she could have in math was probably the equivalent of stomping through a room littered with tiny Lego building blocks. Yeah, no thanks.
Sujeong felt her insides twist and turn and beg for mercy as Kei held up her math textbook next to her grinning face. "You ready for this?" Never. Ever.
"N-No."
Kei's bottom lip jutted out upon her reply. Hm, a pout of substantial effect, but the tutee refused to give in so easily. Sujeong narrowed her eyes and Kei approached her, sitting down beside her on the floor. The older girl set the textbook of abominations right down on top of the younger's other homework in progress. She already had it opened to a page presenting the unit circle. A strangled sound involuntarily emerged from the back of Sujeong's throat.
"You remember this?" Kei asked, folding her hands together and placing them on her lap.
How could Sujeong ever forget this thing that was probably created for the sole purpose of torturing poor high school students like herself? She reached for a corner of the page with the intent to turn it over but her tutor gently brushed her hand away. Kei clicked her tongue and Sujeong's hands dropped down to her sides in defeat.
"It's not bad, you know? Once you've got the hang of it, it's actually pretty fun. Because it's so laughably easy." Sujeong hummed flatly in response. Easy for the math whiz to say. Even easier said for the girl who found math - dare she say it - fun. "You're in luck today, Sujeong! Because I've figured out a great way for you to memorize the unit circle!" Kei appeared so excited as she said this, that Sujeong felt inclined to at least smile.
Kei placed a dainty finger on the starting point of the unit circle, at (1,0). Then she dragged her fingertip across the circle in a counter-clockwise direction. "3, 2, 1. 1, 2, 3. 3, 2, 1. 1, 2, 3." Sujeong was admittedly too mesmerized by the motion of Kei's finger on the page to actually comprehend what her tutor was doing. Kei beamed at her expectantly, probably waiting for a vocalization that conveyed her understanding. Too bad, that was not going to happen.
"What was that? I don't get it." Kei's hopeful expression disappeared immediately, soon replaced by a small frown.
"What do you mean you don't get it? Here - let me show you this more slowly - " Kei's finger fell upon the (1,0) point again, her nail emitting a dull sound as it made contact with the page. Before the muscles in her thin arm even contracted, Sujeong's hand darted out and landed on top of hers.
The tutor sent her tutee a questioning glance, and the girl completed the exchange with a sheepish smile. "I think that's enough for now."
Kei's brow slowly lifted up while her hand remained trapped beneath the younger girl's. "But we just started - "
"I'm already tired - "
"We literally just started - " Kei's eyes travelled to the cat-shaped clock on Sujeong's wall. " - three minutes ago!" Sujeong merely shrugged and Kei softly breathed out. She placed her free hand on top of Sujeong's, making a sandwich out of their hands. "Look, Sujeong. I know you don't like math, but I'm here to help you. It is my duty to make sure you succeed and pass this class with flying colors." Sujeong nodded and Kei continued, "You know what, let's do something different today!"
Not math, not math, not math, Sujeong chanted inside of her head as she stared at Kei in anticipation.
"I'm going to focus on making math fun for you!" Sujeong retracted her hand from between Kei's and coughed into her fist. Of course, she couldn't escape from math. She unconsciously sighed as she recalled the last few times that Kei insisted on doing this. To say the least, none of her attempts were even close to successful. But she was going to entertain the older girl anyway, because it may have been a fact that the mere thought of math made her want to charge headfirst into traffic, but passing the time with Kei like this was not so bad.
"Sure." was Sujeong's simple reply.
"If you find some fun in it, I'm more than positive that you can eventually conquer it!" There was a spark behind Kei's eyes, and that was what Sujeong liked about her (among many many other things). For such a delicate frame, Kei had a powerful drive to do what she wanted to. Sujeong sat up straighter, offering the older girl her undivided attention. "First, let's get to the root of the problem. What is it about math in particular that you don't like?"
Sujeong took Kei's question into serious consideration. She never actually bothered to think about it - she just thought of math as something she disliked and would relentlessly continue to dislike. Now that she was really thinking about her experiences with math, she remembered t
