Just Taeyeon

The Silver Guardian

- Story view -

Jessica was a little anxious than usual when she was running late. Taeyeon had become slightly more than just a supervisor to her. Maybe, some sort of a friend, and Jessica had started to feel the need to be a little bit more responsible towards her. She kept glancing at her watch while she waited for the lift which was descending from the 42nd floor, the highest floor, which was the level her office was located at. She bit her lower lip, secretly hoping that it wasn't Taeyeon in that lift.

The lift was at the 33rd floor when Jessica felt the familiar tingling sensation on her neck, and the feeling was getting stronger as the lift got nearer and nearer to the ground floor. She swallowed her saliva, her body tensing up while she waited in anxiety, knowing that it was a Rebel. 20th. She clenched her jaw, sensing the amount of power whoever in the lift possessed. She couldn't help but to feel slightly worried, even though she knew that she possessed more power than that. 10th. Unknowingly, she grabbed the side of her pants tightly. 3rd. Her Silver Pulse was beginning flare threateningly. 2nd. She kept her eyes fixed on the lift. 1st.

The door of the lift slowly opened, revealing a gorgeous lady clad in a chic brown leather jacket. Their eyes met, as the lady took slow steps out of the lift. They were separated by barely an arm's length, when both their eyes flashed a momentary silver. Jessica stood where she was, her body as tensed as ever, while the lady finally tore her eyes off her and moved right past her. It was a second or two, before Jessica turned back to look at the lady who was taking confident steps further and further away from her.

"Jessica." Jessica's eyes widened in shock when the familiar voice sounded behind her and she snapped her head back to face the front.

"A-ah Tae...no...boss."

"It's 9.30 now and what are you doing here?"

"Uh... That... Uh..."

"Aren't you going to go up quickly?"

"Ah yes yes. I'm heading right up now. Sorry," Jessica mumbled, bowing slightly before she took quick steps towards the elevator.

Frowning, Taeyeon shook her head before making her way out of the building, towards the outdoor carpark. She smiled automatically as she approached the pink Chevrolet Spark parked not too far away. Not knowing that the girl inside the car was the exact reason why Jessica was held up at the ground floor instead of in the office just a moment ago, she naturally got into the passenger's seat and turned to greet the driver who flashed a charismatic eye-smile.

"Finally I'm done. Sorry to have kept you waiting. Let's go now Fany."

***

It was an hour or two since Taeyeon arrived back at the office. Jessica was almost done with her work when she happened to glance at Taeyeon's room, and noticed that the girl was holding her head with a pained expression. Furrowing her eyebrows, she sped up in doing her work. Finally, after half an hour or so, Jessica hit the enter button with a satisfied smile. After printing the necessary documents and filing them neatly, she let out a breath, before she picked up the file and a small packet and headed towards Taeyeon's room.

Knocking on her door gently, Jessica entered the room after hearing a weak "yes, yes" from her supervisor.

"Hey boss. I need your signature on these documents." Taeyeon only nodded as she took the documents over. "Are you okay anyway?" Jessica asked, and Taeyeon looked up from the documents, before she shook her head slightly.

"The heat sorta fried my brains. My head hurts," came her reply before she returned to the documents. It didn't take Taeyeon long to finish looking through the documents and sign them, before handing it back to Jessica with a tired smile.

"Uh... This," Taeyeon who had already started to continue her work, looked up at Jessica once more, and took over the small packet from Jessica's hand.

"This is...?"

"Painkillers. I saw you holding your head from outside."

"Ah..." Taeyeon let out a laugh before she nodded. "Thanks."

Smiling back in response, Jessica bowed before she turned to leave the room.

"Ah Jessica!" Taeyeon's words managed to stop her in her tracks.

"Yes?"

"Do you wanna go for dinner tonight?"

"Uh..." Jessica hesitated, not knowing what to reply. It was the same old money issue she was worried about.

"You don't want to?" Taeyeon asked again, her tone filled with uncertainty.

"A-ah it's not that... Uh... Can we go to somewhere less expensive...?"

Upon hearing Jessica's words, Taeyeon only laughed. "Don't be silly. It's my treat."

"Ah no! That wasn't what I meant. I'm not trying to ask you to treat. I just thought we can go to somewhere less expensive... I can pay for my own," Jessica tried her hardest to explain.

"I'll treat."

"No really. You don't have to."

"Can I treat you because I'm your boss?"

"But..."

"Or, because you're Yuri's friend?"

"Even so..."

"I'm not taking the painkillers if you're gonna keep rejecting like this."

"I... Okay okay..."

"Right. Get on with your work then." Taeyeon smiled, before she picked up her pen and continued where she had left off.

Jessica could only sigh helplessly, as she returned to her desk.

***

Jessica could only stare at the steak before her eyes, which was a far cry from the less expensive food she had suggested earlier. "How do I eat something this expensive...?"

"How? Easy. With your knife and fork, and your mouth," Taeyeon replied, utterly deadpan, "And thank me later, perhaps."

"Taeyeon-ssi..."

"Just Taeyeon. How many times do I need to say this? Dig in. The food's turning cold."

When both girls were finally done with their food, Taeyeon let out a satisfied sigh.

"Good?" The older girl asked with a bright smile.

"Very good." Jessica nodded, giving a thumbs up. "Thanks, Taeyeon."

"Welcome. So...how's work so far? Manageable?"

"I still think that my method is more efficient..." Jessica answered matter-of-factly, and Taeyeon couldn't help but to laugh heartily.

"I know it's more efficient, but our current method is more beneficial to the company."

"I'm just teasing."

"And now you're learning to tease your boss?" Taeyeon raised an eyebrow.

"I thought you're just Taeyeon now?" Jessica tilted her head slightly to the side, a mischievous smile obvious on her face.

Taeyeon relentlessly landed a stinging smack on Jessica's arm. "I'm gonna fire you."

"You love me too much to do that," Jessica challenged. "Or maybe, you want to fire me so that you'll always be just Taeyeon?" Laughing hard, Jessica wondered when did the girl in front of her become such a comfortable figure for her to even dare to like that.

"You do your 'just Taeyeon' thing again and I'll fire you for sure," Taeyeon snapped, rolling her eyes and Jessica threw her hands up in defeat.

"Right, no more 'just Taeyeon', just Taeyeon!"

"You!"

"Hahahaha okay zip!" Jessica made a zip gesture across her lips and Taeyeon found herself laughing too.

When the two girls finally stopped laughing, Taeyeon hesitated for a moment before she decided to ask Jessica the question that was bothering her since a while ago. "Actually Jessica... Are you in some kinda debt or something?"

Jessica's eyes widened in surprise at her sudden question, but she shook her head. "No. Why are you asking?"

"Hmm... 'Cause you gave me the impression that you were in need of money or some sort."

"Well... I do need the money, but it's not because I'm in debt."

"Ah... Then may I ask...what for?"

"I...have a sister to feed other than myself. And her education too. It's not quite easy for me to earn that money alone, but I'm managing. Thanks to you, actually."

Taeyeon could only smile when Jessica showed her appreciation. "Alone? What about your parents?"

"My parents...aren't around any more." A sorry expression took over Taeyeon's face, and Jessica quickly added, "It's okay. I'm over the sadness."

It took Taeyeon a while, before she looked mindlessly at Jessica. "It's the same for me."

"What...?" Jessica furrowed her eyebrows at her words.

"My parents. They aren't around any more either." The slightly younger girl didn't know how to react, and she only stared blankly at her supervisor. "I don't even remember what exactly happened. My dad's friend came over to my house one evening and took me to his house, telling me that my parents were gone."

"I'm sorry to hear that..." Jessica's eyes were sad, and part of the reason came from the memory of her own parents.

"Heaven gave me two sisters in return, after taking away my parents though."

"Two...sisters?"

"Yeah, sorta. Two other orphans like me. We grew up together and we're pretty much like sisters. I don't know how I'd have survived without them, really. Somehow, I grew up and...yeah."

"You grew up well. Like, really really well," Jessica grinned as she gently tapped the crown of Taeyeon's head.

"And now you're treating your boss like a puppy." Taeyeon narrowed her eyes at the girl.

"You're cute, boss."

"I am? But you thought I was your unnie."

"Can't you be cute even if you were my unnie? Plus, technically, you are my unnie."

"Fine then. This unnie shall treat you to delicious food, okay?"

"Why are you so rich actually?"

"My parents just left quite a bit of money for me, I guess."

"We have the same stories, yet I'm not quite as fortunate as you. This is so unfair." Jessica pouted, and Taeyeon shook her head as she laughed.

"Didn't I say that this unnie will treat you to delicious food? Just stop declining my offer next time."

"There's a next time?"

The corners of Taeyeon's lips curved upwards. "Of course. There will be many next times."

"Thanks, unnie."

"Oh and did I mention, it's only if you'd stop calling me unnie. I'm not that old, you know."

"Okay, just Taeyeon then."

"Jessica Jung!"

Firstly, the very sweet iasb123 surprised me with a picture/poster for this story which is the main image for this chapter. I appreciate it so, so much. :) So, this chapter is so full of conversations, isn't it? It's so typical of my stories. I hope the conversations helped you to better understand Taeyeon's past, as well as Taeyeon and Jessica's personalities. Write me something, in any case. What you would like to read, and such.

And in case anyone wondered how Tiffany looked like in the first part of the story, it's like this. Kinda. ;)

Chapter 10 may take a little longer than usual this time, but I'll try to release it on time. However, something big is happening really soon. Hint? Death.
