pleae listen to the music how to save a life by The Flay

The sea was black and there was no difference between it and the sky. The waves made no sound among themselves, only faint noises as they went under the canoe or struck against it. Sometimes the noises seemed angry and at other times like people laughing. I was not hungry because of my fear.

[Flashback]

“I no longer believed in the idea of soulmates, or love at first sight. I used to believe it when I was young but I was beginning to believe that a very few times in your life, if you were lucky, you might meet someone who was exactly right for you. Not because he was perfect, or because you were, but because you combined flaw were arranged in a way that allow two separate beings to hinge together.

“Did you meet him, Nurse Kim?”

“I don’t know. Probably.”

[Present]

Yonghwa had hangover from last night; he woke up late and felt sick to his stomach. He didn’t want to step out from his bed.

He called his secretary, Jongsuk to cancel the meeting and after that he called his landline to have some maids bring him the coffee and painkillers.

Knock knock..

Someone knocked on his door.

“Come in.” Yonghwa said while trying his best to sit up but his head was way too heavy. He gave up and threw his weight back onto bed.

The door was opened but standing there was SeoJoohyun.

“It’s me, samchon. I’m sorry for bothering you here.”

“emm Joohyun.” He acknowledged her.

“I heard you were late, are you sick?” She asked, standing close to the door, not sure if she was allowed to get in or not.

“yeahh, I have terrible headache.” Yonghwa said while trying to sit up one more time just to have a clear look of her.

Joohyun watched him struggled so she automatically moved fast to help him, now she was next to Yonghwa.”Did you take any medicine already, samchon?” She asked while put her hand on his forehead to feel the fever, but his temperature was normal.

Yonghwa grabbed her hand off his forehead and held it. “I asked someone to bring me coffee and painkillers, they must be coming”

“Do you mean painkillers and water? Why do you still want coffee?” She asked, looked at him with rounded eyes.

“Because coffee will help with hangover.” Yonghwa closed his eyes when the pain rushing in.

“Hangover? What does it mean?”

At this point, Yonghwa opened his eyes to watch an innocent Joohyun standing beside his king bed, one hand in his. Too bad…she didn’t know what hangover meant, perhaps she never taste a single drop of alcohol her entire life. Right, that was very SeoJoohyun.

But one thing for sure, he didn’t want her to disappoint with his wasted behavior.

“Hangover is a type of virus, kind of like influenza but it doesn’t give you fever, only terrible headache and stomach pain sometimes.”

“Hangover virus?” Joohyun muttered.

“Yes, hangover virus. And so coffee with painkillers are enough to cure it.”

“Never heard something like that before. You aren’t trying to deceive me, are you, samchon?” Joohyun wondered.”And how it’s coffee instead of herbal drink to help with it?”

“Aigoo.. coffee was made from coffee beans, and coffee beans are kind of grains. Grains are full of essential nutrients. You can go ask anywhere if coffee helps with hangover or not.” Yonghwa dared her, he wanted to laugh but the headache just didn’t allow him.

Joohyun saw how he seemed in pain, so she didn’t want to bug him more. “Then I will bring you the coffee and painkillers myself. Hang in there.” She pulled out her hand and scurried out.

Yonghwa couldn’t help but smiled to himself – Joohyun was really something else. She was adorable in her own way and yes, she was sweet, so sweet.

After a moment Joohyun came back to find Yonghwa back to his sleep.

“Samchon.. You need to take pill first, palli, wake up.” She called and tried to wake him up.

Yonghwa could smell his favorite coffee but only snuggled to his pillow more. “Coffee is still hot, just leave it there.” He mumbled.

“Aniyoh. If you don’t take it now, the virus may spread to your entire body.”

It got Yonghwa to laugh; even he was still closing his eyes tight.

“It’s not funny somchon. I mean it. You need to take it now.”

“Ani, the hangover viruses don’t spread. Lucky to you, right, you won’t get infect and I will wait until the coffee turns cold.”

Actually she forgot to bother if she would get infect or not.”..But you won’t get worse for waiting, right?”

“If you are so worried sick, you can stay here and make sure I’m alright.” He said and patted the empty space on bed. “Here, sit down.”

Joohyun sat on his bed as he told. “What can I do then? Do you think I should put some ice in your coffee to make it cold faster?”

Yonghwa laughed.”You can’t do that.” He whined out as a little boy made Joohyun amused and finally she gave up with that idea. “If you want to be a help, perhaps tell me a story while I wait for my coffee.” He told her.

“If I tell you a story, does it make you feel better?” She asked, concerning.

“Yes, somehow when I hear your voice I feel serene. You have the power as a tranquilizer.” He said while close his eyes, succumbed to the steady noise inside his head.

“A tranquilizer? You want me to put on the role of tranquilizer?”

“Yes, please.” He mumbled.

“But I’m not sure how.”

“Just tell your story the way you always do. I don’t know since when but thinking of your story and the way you told it calmed me. Perhaps you have a super human power in soothing” He opened his eyes to look at her.

Joohyun looked him in the eyes and felt the pull again. “Okay, I’m a tranquilizer now, samchon.”

Yonghwa smiled watching her determination and the way her eyes sparkled always got to him.

“Though I don’t have that kind of power but if you believe, I will believe.”

“Good job, a tranquilizer Joohyun.”

“Which story should I tell you?”

“Any story will do.”

Joohyun was thinking before she decided. “Samchon, you know what - I have another name.”

“Eh?” He uttered while kept his eyes close.

Joohyun smiled to herself.”This name was the holy name, must keep as secret and seldom used for if people use your secret name it becomes worn out and loses its magic and you will die. But I know it’s not true.”

“How?”

“I think it’s a strategy since the common name is for everyone to call you – the stranger or whoever, they don’t know you well. In that case the common name is like your shell, but there is the inner part, your core. You won’t wish anyone to see right through it, so it goes by the secret name.”

“Why can’t you let anyone see right through it, isn’t it better to save ‘the get to know part’?”

“Aniyoh. Because you can’t trust everyone, samchon. Because you don’t know strangers, they could harm you. I know this is not about the magic or holiness. I trust you now; I will tell you my secret name.”

“Tell me?”

“Yes, when I thought of it back then, I asked the doctor to name me. And I learned that ‘Joohyun’ means the black, precious peal.”

“Keurae? It means that?” He thought that name suited her.

“Yes, and my secret name is……” She lowered her face to whisper in his ear. “Seohyun” and then she pulled back.

“Seohyun? So it’s SeoSeohyun, right?” He looked at her.

“Aniyoh. Just Seohyun, not SeoSeohyun.” She corrected him with her shy smile.

Yonghwa didn’t know why but he liked the way her cheek brushed. Joohyun was such a cutie. “And what does Seohyun mean?”

“The doctor told me to give its meaning my own way, so I picked ‘Seohyun’ to go with ‘a girl with long black hair’, samchon.”

Yonghwa raised his brows while observed her. “If it’s like that, I thinl ‘Seohyun’ fit for a common name better while Joohyun will be right for a secret name.”

“Aniyoh, samchon. I think Seohyun fit for my secret name best.”

“Why?”

“Because I want my trusted people to see my inside, I’m that girl with long black hair all along.” There was hidden sadness in the way she said it.

Yonghwa felt the urge to touch her long black hair. “Keurae, you are her.” He reached out to hold a log of her hair, using his hand to comb it, letting it smother between his fingers. “And then everyone can easily see just your inside.” He said.

But he didn’t realize that no one was allowed to know it, no one had the privilege to hear it from her, no one but him….. Anyone could see and think whatever about her, she didn’t care – only she cared how he perceive her, the real her.

And he didn’t seem to understand the way she granted this privilege only for him.

He would never realize how much she wanted him to understand…

She was a girl with long black hair, the one who was left, alone in the far lost island.

She was a girl; she had a galaxy in her eyes and a universe in her mind….

Sometimes she cried for help, waiting for anyone to come and rescue her.

Now that he came but no one knew where they were gonna go.

And she granted him the map to her soul, the book to read her, but he just didn’t know.

Yonghwa noticed the sadness in her eyes again even it was just lightly and he didn’t know what he did wrong.

“How about I ask you to name me my secret name? In exchange that you tell me your secret name.”

This times her eyes seemed twinkle the million stars in her galaxy. “Really?”

“Did I ever lie to you? Com’on, name me one.”

“Then you will go by the secret name ‘Yong’.” She said.

“Yong? A dragon? Does my inside seem like a dragon?”

“Aniyoh, it’s not like that. You have to give its meaning your own way and tell it to anyone you trust.”

Yonghwa considered it, to give the word ‘Yong’ other meaning…the one that explained his inside..?

“I think you coffee is cold enough now.”

[Flashback]

“Abonim, your coffee is getting cold now.” The boy said.

But the man was still lost in his oblivion, so far away.

“Abomim.. Appa..” the boy shook his father’s arm.

“eh? Ahhh Yonghwa-yah, what do you say?”

“Coffee, abomim, it’s all cold.”

“Ahh this coffee? It’s okay, son. Cold coffee tastes good, too.” And then the man raised his cup to sip the cold coffee so finely.

“Does it really taste good? Despite its coldness?”

“Of course, it’s good. I’d say it’s the best.” The man said though he didn’t feel the taste of thing he swallowed down at all.

And then he shifted back to his far away haze again.

The boy kept asking question after question…

“..Abonim, don’t you hear me?”

“Ahh Yonghwa-yah, I’m a bit busy now. Go ask your omma, she sure will answer you all that….right, she is going out, but she will be back soon. Just be a good boy and wait, will you?”

“but abonim…”

And then again, the boy watched how his father’s mind seemed to be lost in the far away oblivion, Yonghwa couldn’t reach him.

Never would…

[Present]

Jonghyun hadn’t show up at Yonghwa’s office since last hang out. When the whole week passed, Yonghwa was sure how they seemed to be in estranged state now.

He knew Jonghyun was the type who was honest to his beliefs, when something crossed; Jonghyun wouldn’t withstand it, he rather died fighting the causes.

And like that he threw Yonghwa away because he knew Yonghwa was a lost cause.

Yonghwa didn’t blame Jonghyun and he couldn’t deny that it was hurt – to have your trusted one turned a cold shoulder on you.

But Yonghwa didn’t do anything, the man was so used to leave thing settle on its own term.

Finally on Friday, Jonghyun showed up to ask for his transferring to Inchon branch, he said it was closer to his home which it’s kind of true.

“…but you are the head of law segment here.”

“Seulong hyeong was back from America now, he was senior. I think it time for me to step back from the front row.”

“Seulong hyeong can work as senior consultant, but the head is you. I trust you most.”

“Keurae? Then I will just tell you I don’t like it here. It’s so damn frustrating the way people think I’m here because I was your best friend, not that they care about my work.”

“Can’t you put aside that? You handle it so finely before.”

“Put aside that I’m your friend? This is how I’m doing just now, Yonghwa. I don’t give a about you anymore, that’s why I’m asking for transfer.”

“…”

“You know only this way; we can keep our good old days as friends.”

“Is this really what you want?”

“Yeah, can you grant me my wish?”

“Are you throwing me away like this?”

“No, you are the one who keep pushing me away all these years, don’t you?”

Yonghwa turned silent.

“As you friend, I want to be by your side and I want to watch over you, but you! You make it hard for me, Yonghwa. I’m feeling useless around you; it’s always like that between us.”

“Useless? How’s come?”

“Let’s just say, I can’t understand the way you deal things. I know you are excellent when it comes to work but you are ty when it comes to relationships. And to keep it professional, I don’t want to mix up work and personal dilemma, that’s why I ask you for transfer.”

“So you will never have to be around me anymore?”

“Believe me Yonghwa, you never want me around, not as much as we make it seems like. So you will be fine, perhaps better off without me bugging you. And I will be good having a time for my life and my family instead of intervening with your life.”

“...so I will have to grant you your wish then.” Yonghwa said helplessly..

But deep down, he wish Jonghyun would change his mind.

Well no, Jonghyun was so determined this time.

And so Yonghwa was thrown away by his best friend like that.

From this point, everything seemed to go wrong for JungYonghwa; when he felt lost and frustrated, there was no one he could talk to like Jonghyun and so the man became full of self-doubt.

It was like there was big wave after wave rippled from his inside, the inside which he couldn’t see and couldn’t explain to anyone.

Before this, there was Jonghyun who seemed to understand, but now that Jonghyun had enough with him, Yonghwa was no better than a mess.

His frustration got the best of him, he turned moody and illogical. His anger radiated from little things. Even things that never caused him problem turned out one hundred different ways possible.

He couldn’t stand the press and those netizens who kept bugging on his personal life. He was moody and rude to YoonA when she called on him, made him hated himself even more.

JungYonghwa was a living self-destruction.

By next 3 days, his wrecking temper was regular thing everyone around expected to see, he was moody at the workplace with his employee and those senior executive directors; he was moody at home with his maids. He was moody with everyone and everything around.

He was moody, annoyed, desperate, and helpless.

He simply was a sinking boat.

[Flashback]

“Yonghwa, stop going around looking for your mother”

“But immo, I….”

”That selfish woman won’t come back‼ And you, Jonghyun, you should stop him instead of tagging along.”

“I’m sorry, madam Jung. I just try to make sure Yonghwa didn’t get himself into trouble.”

“It’s not Jonghyun’s fault, he just try to help me, imo.”

“Enough! You two‼ And no more going around from now on.”

“I can’t, imo! Abonim is waiting for omma. I’ll bring her back and everything will be alright.”

“Just in your dream, boy. Women who abandoned her child and husband, then ran away with her lover, why do you want her back? Don’t you, at least, have your pride?”

“It’s not true! My omma doesn’t runaway with anyone. I know she has her own reasons for this, and she didn’t mean to leave me.”

“tsk, whatever you think, you little loser and  your loser father...”

[Present]

“..samchon?” a girl voice echoed in the dim light. “Is that you?” She asked.

It’s SeoJoohyun.

Every night, Yonghwa calmed himself by spending time at home bar, drinking alcohol for one more night to pass. And he preferred most light to turn off.

He didn’t answer the girl, hoping for her to go away.

“What are you doing alone in the dark?” She asked, now standing behind him.

Yonghwa didn’t say a word; actually he was tipsy enough to not give a about anything.

“Now I know. Because you are alone and you can’t see well in the darkness, that’s why you are attacked by these hangover viruses.” The girl said.

And then she climbed to sit on the high stool next to him.

“I will sit here with you, so you won’t have to be alone. At least, you will know here am I in the darkness, and you won’t be afraid.”

“I don’t afraid of darkness, SeoJoohyun.” He said, a bit annoyed and offended. And then he raised his cup to sib the liquor.

“Then which way you are looking when you are surrounded by darkness, samchon?”

No answer.

“At first when we found ourselves all alone on the island, we had decided that we would take one of the canoes and go to the country that lay towards the east. So we did and by the night fall the sea was black and there was no difference between it and the sky. We were tired because of padding all day, but we were not hungry because of our fear.”

Yonghwa didn’t know what she was talking about now.

Joohyun continued “The first star made us feel less afraid. It came out low in the sky and it was in front of us, towards the east. Other stars began to appear all around, but it was this one we kept our gaze upon. It was in the figure that we call a serpent, a star which shone green and which we knew. Now and then it was hidden by mist, yet it always came out brightly again”

Yonghwa couldn’t care less; he just let the girl be.

“Without this star we would have been lost, for the waves never changed. They came always from the same direction and in a manner that kept pushing us away from the place we wanted to reach. For this reason the canoe made a path in the black water like a snake. But somehow we kept moving towards the star which shone in the east.”

Yonghwa kept drinking and the girl kept telling her story. Yes, somehow it made him felt calm.

“This star rose high and then we kept the North Star on our left hand, the one we call 'the star that does not move'. The wind grew quiet. Since it always died down when the night was half over, we knew how long we had been travelling and how far away the dawn was.”

Joohyun stopped just then, Yonghwa turned to look her way.

She sighed. “About this time we found that the canoe was leaking. What do we do now, samchon?”

“You ask me now? If it was me, I wouldn’t take that damn canoe out in big sea at the first place.” Yonghwa replied with mocking tone.

“Alright, somehow we manage to stop the leak. We were very tired, but more hopeful. Another night and another day might bring us within sight of the shore towards which we were going. Not long after dawn, while we were thinking of this strange place and what it would look like, the canoe began to leak again. This crack was between the same planks, but was a larger one and close to where we were kneeling.” And then she paused, taking in some breathe.

“You aren’t going to give up easily, are you, despite that wrecking canoe?” Yonghwa couldn’t help but asked. He suddenly remembered the stubborn look radiated from the photo of little Joohyun’s since the very first glance he laid his eyes on.

“Should I give up on the boat that carries my life? I don’t think so.”

Yonghwa just shrugged.

“Yes, it was suddenly clear to us that it was dangerous to go on. The voyage would take two more days, perhaps longer. By turning back to the island we would not have neatly so far to travel. Still we could not make up our mind to do so. The sea was calm and we had come far. The thought of running back after all this labor was more than we could bear. Even greater was the thought of the deserted island we would return to, of living there alone and forgotten. For how many suns and how many moons?” Her voice became richer for she poured her emotion out each word.

And that moment Yonghwa turned to watch Joohyun in the new light, suddenly it was clear to him what she was trying to convey – she was talking about the fear of going on and the greater fear of returning to her deserted island. She was on that boat, betting her life on it.

It was clear to Yonghwa now, how she might feel all these times.

Joohyun was that girl with long black hair, who was left, completely neglected by her relatives at the far lost place. How many suns and how many nights?

There was loneliness and there was fear, and then there was fear of loneliness which was worst of all.

That’s why she didn’t hesitate when he came. Even she had no idea what kind of place he would take her to.

But looked at him now….

What am I doing? Do I look like someone who could be entrusted with her?

Joohyun manage to steady her voice and continued. “..But when we saw the water seeping through the crack again, we picked up the paddle. There was no choice except to turn back towards the island. We knew that only by the best of fortune would we ever reach it. With the wind we went more slowly and had to stop more often because of the water spilling over the sides, but the leak did not grow worse. This was my first good fortune.”

She turned to look Yonghwa in his eyes. “The next was when a swarm of dolphins appeared.”

“Dolphins?” Yonghwa uttered softly.

“Yes, samchon. Dolphins, they came swimming out of the west, but as they saw the canoe they turned around in a great circle and began to follow us. Dolphins are animals of good omen. It made us happy to have them swimming around the canoe, and though our hands had begun to bleed from the chafing of the paddle, just watching them made us forget the pain. We were very lonely before they appeared, but now we felt that we had friends with us and did not feel the same.”

Yonghwa felt his throat dry, so he swallowed down more alcohol. He thought of when she told him to put on the role of blue dolphins, how long it took him to understand that?

“..And finally we could make it back home safely, samchon.” She ended the story with her smile.

To realize all that made Yonghwa felt guilty, but his ego just didn’t allow him to admit it easily, it set him out for a mood killer.”The only reason dolphins are animals of good omen because they don’t feed on you. Think about if it’s not dolphin but shark, you won’t survive to feel glad for it. Am I right?”

Joohyun just smiled to him. “You are my blue dolphin, samchon. And I’m thankful for everything.”

“Keurea? Whatever you seem so sure.” Yonghwa watched her coldly and turned to immerse himself on drinking, just ignoring Joohyun.

He kind of understood her ground now, but he barely understood his. And that didn’t help with the situation. He only wished he could drink himself to oblivion, and everything else could go to vain.

How bitter and disappoint the day could bring! How many suns and how many moons?

“..But I know, you didn’t just pick me up because you mean to help.” Joohyun said.

Yonghwa looked her way again, what was she talking about now? He didn’t expect to hear that because he, himself, never fathomed on the ‘why’. Why did he pick her up? Who cared?

“For what I see, I think you are on the voyage, travelling around, searching for something, things that went missing in your life. You never get lost, you are not afraid of darkness. You know so many stars and the stars are loyal to you. And finally you met me; you don’t think it’s a burden to tag me along, so you take me on your boat….for what, samchon?”

She didn’t ask why, she asked him ‘for what?’. That was a difference. And so he thought about it.

If it was not for the sake of helping her then for what else?

For what that he took her with him…

“for you not have to fear of loneliness, isnt’ it?” She answered with her guess.

He? Fear of loneliness? Yonghwa didn’t think so.

“It wasn’t that you are so lonely, but you just barely have anyone who related with.” Joohyun clarified. “And you found me related with you, right?”

Yonghwa’s eyes were bigger in mirth like he felt a thunder hit.

… And you found me related with you, right?

How?

How could she see right through it while he didn’t even sort it out yet?

And that he knew it with all his heart – she was right.

7 years ago, when he was 26 and struggled with some hidden truths…

“Sometimes people were too busy chasing after happiness, before they ended up realize that they were left with full of unhappiness in their arms”

No, before that…

“Your noona, will she be happy ever again?”

 “Why ask?”

“Nothing…just I’m curious”

Before that…

 “Have you ever visited them?”

“Yes, I have, several times when my bro-in-law was there. But since the incidence, noona doesn’t want to see my face either. I’m missing my Joohyun so badly.”

Perhaps, before that…

“She doesn’t live with her parents, does she?”

“Yes, she lives with her omma, but…Did you hear about my noona’s scandal?”

“Eh? I’m not kind of catching up with scandal”

“She ran away with a low class guy.”

Runaway with a…..guy‼

Uri ahbeoji is so mad at her; he put an end to father-daughter ships. But just 4 months ago, my bro-in-law became bankrupt on his small business. It’s his family’s business passed to generation after generation, so he couldn’t stand the loss that why he committed suicide.”

Committed suicide‼

[Flashback]

“..Appa‼‼” The boy called out and ran fast to hold on to the body of his father, puddle of blood stained on table, one of his hands was still holding a gun which used for his execution.

.

.

.

.

The boy was standing in front of his father’s grave alone.

At that moment, he noticed someone showing up from behind the big tree…nearby. Soneone…

“..Omma! Omma, where have you been?” The boy shouted and ran fast to his mother.

“Kajima, Yonghwa! Don’t get close to me.” His mother screamed.

It made Yonghwa stunt, stood still on the spot. “Why, omma? Why… I very miss you. Why did you leave me? Why didn’t you stay with us?”

“I’m sorry, Yonghwa-yah. I’m so sorry. I couldn’t stand one more moment with him, I couldn’t find any happiness.”

Tears were running down his face…

“Omma love you, Yonghwa. Love you with all my heart, but omma didn’t love your appa. Never.”

“But appa loved omma, and we are family.”

“I’m sorry ..i’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for it to turn out this way, Yonghwa-yah. I’m sorry.”

“Omma, come back to stay with me, please”

“I can’t, Yonghwa. I can’t go back after all I have done.”

“But I have no one.. omma please come back for me.”

“You stay with Imo, Yonghwa. Stay there, be good, made us proud of you ..Yonghwa, I have to go now.”

“Omma… omma please take me with you.”

The boy could only cry for his mother, he watched his mother turned her back on him..

He shouted, called out for her but she never turned back.

He started to run after her when he saw his mother reached a car, got on, and the car started to move away

He ran fast after that car, screamed from the top of his lungs like a mad boy, cried a lot, hoping for his mother to stop and look back.

But she didn’t.

And at the end, he didn’t even know what he was searching for, all this time.

Deep down inside, he still wished for his mother’s happiness.

.

.

“Your noona, will she be happy ever again?”

“Why ask?”

“Nothing…just I’m curious”

“Sometimes people were too busy chasing after happiness, before they ended up realize that they were left with full of unhappiness in their arms”

“….”

“But they just can’t help doing that to themselves, because if they stay still the happiness never comes to them though. Or at worst, they are in deep misery that why they need to struggle out and run away as far as they could. Perhaps we could say – happiness is such delusive”

.

[Present]

He still remembered the photo of a little girl’s and some story of hers since then.

He remembered the feeling of sympathy for her because of all people; he understood well how it felt to have no family left. And as time passed, no matter what happened, he still remembered her.

At least, on this world, there was someone who was just as hurt as him.

He felt related with her.

And now he felt how much it hurt, and how long he had been hurt.

He couldn’t hold it back this time when all thing you had been through rearranged itself and intensified your suffering.

Yonghwa pulled Joohyun to his embrace and broke down to tears. “It’s just too much now.” He said, softly, his voice strained with so much agony.

Joohyun put her arm around him, touched him with her tenderness

“I know samchon. I know we have been hurt a lot and we always feel lonely. All of us, the one who was neglected like me, the one keep pushing everyone away like madam-nim, or the one who couldn’t reach like you…we are in this together.”

Hearing her words, he pulled her closer.

He hugged her so tight that all of her broken pieces came right together.

She nestled her head on his chest, healing his invisible wound by her well wishing.

“It seems like all this time, madamnim is on the mainland, I’m on the island, and you are in the boat traveling across the sea. But now you take me with you, I don’t know where we are heading to.”

“Somewhere, we’ll be fine as long as you are with me, Joohyun.” He told her. “Do not throw me away no matter how disappointed I am, understand?”

“I won’t throw you away, samchon. Please don’t throw me away either.”

“No, I won’t. You are my tranquilizer now. I need you to stay serene.”

“Yes, samchon. Now I know it. I promise to do my best.”

“Thanks you, a tranquilizer Joohyun.”

The night was very long, longer than the night before. Twice I dozed kneeling there in the canoe, though I was more afraid than I had ever been. But the morning broke clear and in front of me lay the dim line of the island like a great fish sunning itself on the sea I reached it before the sun was high, the sandpits and its tides that bore me into the shore. My legs were stiff from kneeling and as the canoe struck the sand I fell when I rose to climb out. I crawled through the shallow water and up the beach. There I lay for a long time, hugging the sand in happiness.
