The conversation
Woohyun's mistake
Woohyun was careful around Sunggyu for the week after his confession. Sunggyu had not been clear enough with him for him to be sure on how to act. They also had hardly any time around each other alone as schedules picked up and so everyone came back to the dorms exhausted and unable to speak, instead just going straight to bed and sleeping.
“Woohyun we need to sit down and talk” Sunggyu said suddenly to Woohyun late on in the week as they were getting their hair done. Woohyun was startled.
“Um what? About what?”
Sunggyu gave him a pointed look and Woohyun suddenly caught on. “Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah we do.”
They stayed silent again for a second while their make-up was touched up. As soon as the make-up artists moved away Sunggyu spoke again.
“We don’t have anything for about a half an hour on Friday afternoon. Can we talk then Woo?”
Woohyun nodded in response and his hairstylist made a disgruntled noise. Woohyun apologised before pulling a face when the hair stylist turned away. Sunggyu shook his head disapprovingly at him but Woohyun could tell he was trying not to laugh.
Friday came around quickly and Woohyun felt anxious. He didn’t know what Sunggyu wanted to say, or what he wanted to say or what was going on at all really.
They were at the studio when they got a free half an hour. Sunggyu found him at the agreed time and they wandered toward an empty studio. They sat down awkwardly in silence for a moment before Sunggyu started to play on the piano in the room. Woohyun smiled.
After a few minutes Sunggyu stopped playing and turned to face Woohyun. "Enough stalling I think." Woohyun immediately looked down at the floor, too scared to meet Sunggyu's eyes.
Once again Sunggyu broke the silence. "So, you like me?"
Woohyun swallowed. "Yeah."
There was silence for a moment and Woohyun could feel Sunggyu's gaze on him. Finally Sunggyu said "I don't know how I feel about you but my heart is beating really fast right now."
"What does that mean?" Woohyun almost whined. He wanted to throw up, this was too stressful.
"I don't know."
"Great."
Silence.
"What do you want to do now?" Sunggyu asked carefully. He seemed to be very worried about pushing Woohyun over the edge. Woohyun wasn't sure if he was glad or annoyed about that.
"I don't know what you mean."
Sunggyu sighed. "I mean like do you want to try dating?"
"Not if you don't want to."
Woohyun looked up to see Sunggyu seriously thinking. Eventually he spoke,
"I don't like the idea of hurting you. And to me all relationships must end and they never end well. So going down that path seems like sealing a painful end. But I'm willing to try it if you really want, I have nothing against going out with you."
Woohyun should've thought more carefully. He should've listened to everything said, thought about the future, and thought a little about himself. Instead he just thought about Sunggyu, what would be easier for him , and he replied with "we can just stay friends then."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I just don't want to lose my best friend." Woohyun smiled at Sunggyu. Right now he was just so happy that Sunggyu didn't hate him, wasn't repulsed by him, and he didn't want to push things. One day Woohyun would look back on this and want to slap himself. But he didn't know that yet.
Sunggyu got up and hugged Woohyun. "I'll always be your best friend, no matter what, don't you worry about that ok?"
"Ok."
Sunggyu smiled and stepped back. "We have to go back to recording soon, we'd better head out."
"Ok." Woohyun smiled back, happy in this moment.
If only he knew how hard things would become.
