The family drama

The Spell

Luhan looked at Sehun and then the two women sitting on the other side of the table. If stare could kill, there would be three dead bodies here five minutes ago.

They were in a café down the street near the orphanage. After a lighting greeting and bidding goodbye to everyone there, Luhan and Sehun were dragged outside for a private talk. Actually the Chinese boy had excused himself to wait at the bus stop and stayed out of a family drama but the younger one had given him a don’t-you-dare-leave-me-alone look, so he had no other choice to accompany them.

The tension of his table actually attracted attention from the waitress when she approached to take the order. Luhan felt like he had done something wrong and was being lectured for it.

Today was so beyond his expectation, so much info was revealed and frankly he was not prepared for that.  First, Sehun was adopted. Now he had two moms and one of them by the way shifted her eyes to his direction, noticing the awkward moment was tutoring him inside.

“Oh, come on you two. You’re making Sehun’s friend uncomfortable.” Chaerim nudged her life-partner while smiling gently to Luhan. “What’s your name, sweetie?”

“I…I’m Luhan.”

The Chinese boy didn’t know why he sputtered, scratched his head shyly and hoped there was a hole on the ground for him to jump down.

“Oh, so you must be the new friend of Sehun that Jongin has been talking about.”

Luhan’s eyes couldn’t get any bigger whereas Sehun handpalmed himself in embarrassment, couldn’t believe the older one would be a topic for his mom and his best friend chitchatting. The younger male growled.

“You have got to stop gossiping with him mom, especially about me.”

“Why?” she retorted “At least he cares.”

To be honest, Sehun felt offended. Sometimes, he thought they had adopted the wrong child, like he never became a person that they wished him to be. But they knew how things would turn out and that was their choice too so they had no right to complain any more.

He was about to argue with her when he saw his other mom, Sora, sent him a stop-there-before-you-cross-the-line kind of eye message. Swallowing a lump in his throat, the young boy lowered his voice as he leaned in.

“Of course I care of you too mom. I’m your son, remember?”

Chaerim gave him a sideways look, clearly didn’t want to let this go easily.

“Then why didn’t you come home on our last anniversary?”

“I sent you presents.” Sehun almost fell down from his seat. His mom was sometimes like a child, sulking every time he said he was busy and could not go home when she asked.

“Uhmm two cooking books” she held both her hands, started to compare “my son”.

Seeing the fighting was going to no end, Sora finally gripped Chaerim’s shoulder, cut off the tension between mother and son.

“He said sorry to you twice darling. Let it go.” then she dropped her look on the boy who was crossing his arms, leaning on his chair “But we do miss you Sehun ah.”

He tightened his lips, averted his eyes outside the window. He was not good at showing his emotion, even with his moms, no especially with them. Being adopted and the only man in the house, seeing how people looked down and abused on his family, Sehun eventually turned into a cold person. He told himself to be stronger everyday to protect the ones he loved the most. Sometimes he forgot he was still their precious son and treated them like strangers.

After a long minute no one had spoken a word, Sora darted her look to the Chinese male, flashing her apologetic smile.

“Luhan ssi, sorry for you to witness this. But when you have your own children, you will know how we feel.”

Luhan was startled at the mention of his name but quickly covered it with an understanding nod. That was what his father always told him when he did something wrong.

Parents are the same.

“It’s okay. I don’t mind at all.”

“You’re such a gentle man.” she sent him another smile, then looked at both young boys sitting across the table with a lovingly gaze “I bet you all hungry. Chaerim had cooked a big dinner for us. Let’s go home boys.”

Sehun choked on his saliva at his mom’s sudden proposal. Their house was in Incheon so if they drove there to eat, they couldn’t make it back to Seoul before closing hour of the dormitory. Besides, he wasn’t ready to let Luhan involve more into his personal life, even though a little part of him wanted to.

He peeked at the Chinese boy and saw the other was just playing with the hem of his shirt, didn’t have any reaction to the invitation.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea mom.” he said, pointing the boy beside him “You know we won’t go back to our place in time. Moreover I don’t want to cause any trouble to Luhan hyung.”

“Who said you will be back within tonight?” his mom arched her brow after exchanged look with her life-partner “I’ll drive you tomorrow.”

“But Luhan hyung…”

“I’m fine with it.”

The Chinese boy burst out excitedly. The fact that Sehun just called him ‘hyung’ twice for the very first time was enough for him to go anywhere. He couldn’t deny that he found himself more and more attracted to this young boy, besides the reason he had told Jongin.

Sehun was taken back at the overload enthusiasm in the older one’s voice, tilted his head aside waiting for Luhan to say ‘I’m kidding’ but ten seconds passed and nothing was coming from the beaming boy. Having no other choice, he turned to his moms and let out a sigh.

“If you say so.”

***********

It was not exaggerated to say that the Oh’s house was the warmest home the Chinese boy has ever been to. It was small but well decorated. Every space in this house was used for its own purpose and that made the house unique. It had two floors, a garden in front and a smaller one backyard, both was planted vary of trees and flowers. The fence was painted white and adorned with green liana. Luhan thought whoever created this beautiful scene was truly God blessed.

But that was not ending there. The dinner was out of words. Luhan was surprised that he could eat that much and even though he was full, the inside of him screamed for more.

“Say Luhan dear, how do you know our Sehunnie?”

Chaerim holding a plate of fruit, walking from the kitchen then placed it on the table. They had just finished the meal and were gathering at the living room.

Luhan grinned widely as he recalled the memory of their first encounter. That was definitely the most interesting thing happened to him so far.

“We were on a blind date.”

“Oh really?”

Both of the elder women uttered, smirking at their son who was simply popping a grape into his mouth, showing his apathetic to the story.

“It was traditional thing of SIA. Sehun and I won the draw.” Luhan continued.

“FYI, it was not a good luck though.”

The younger boy commented, earning a pout from the Chinese male and a chuckle from his moms. However, despite his attempt to end the story there, three other people kept on digging deep into information.

He finally gave up and left the room, decided to have fresh air in the garden. The cold breeze of late fall sent shiver down to his spine. Sehun sat down on the chair where his mom usually had her book reading in the morning, scanning around. He thought he was getting older (or Suho hyung started rubbing on him) because lately, whenever he visited home, many memories rushed back.

If somebody asked him whether he wished he had had a normal family, a normal childhood or even hadn’t had a chance to get adopted at all, then the answer was yes, many in the opposite. He hated the way people kept an inquisitive eye on him, the way his classmate making fun of him, the way they called him ‘bastard’. Since the day he was aware of the fact that he was adopted, that he had two mothers, that his family didn’t look like the others, his life became a misery. Not a single day he came home without some bruises as a result of fights at school. He was so scared that his moms would yell at him or even kicked him out of the house. But no, they just hugged him, took care of his wound, asked him if he was okay. They never questioned, he guessed they already knew the reason.

A small hand placed on his shoulder pulled Sehun out of his thoughts. Without looking back, he knew whose this hand was. It was the same one that fed him, comforted him whenever he had nightmare, the one that gave him strength to be the man he wanted to be.

“Why are you out here mom? It’s cold.”

Chaerim took the chair on the other side of table, pointing her thumb back to the house.

“Those two men were talking nonstop about all kinds of camera. I’m bored.”

Sehun chuckled, he forgot that his big mommy was a crazy fan of photography. Although she gave up her dream of a photographer to get a real job that could support her little family, her passion for art never died and actually inspired him a lot when he was young.

“So Luhan is nice.” his mom suddenly commented, her voice had some kind of allusion.

“Yeah, nice but annoying.” the young boy shrugged.

“When will you ask him out?”

“What?” Sehun exclaimed. He swore he saw some little stars as he turned his head aside too fast “No, mom, I’m not gonna ask him out.”

“Why?” Chaerim put her elbow on the table, leaned in “You don’t like him?”

And Sehun became speechless. His head was yelling “yes, I don’t like him” but his tongue betrayed him, it didn’t move even though he opened his mouth, going to say something but ended up shut it up. It’s not like he liked the Chinese boy. No, he didn’t know if he liked Luhan or not but clearly he didn’t ‘not like him’.

The longer he stayed silent, the more suspicious his mom became. Sehun scratched his nose awkwardly, chose the safest way to response.

“I..He’s just not my type.”

Great, now I sputtered!

Chaerim wanted to son a little longer but looked at how his face turned into a slight pink, she decided to drop it here.

“Okay. Point taken.” she giggled “Anyway, I think you should show your friend where to sleep.  I need your mom back now.”

Sehun gave her a are-you-kidding-me look before stood up, heading back to the house. Right when he saw the younger boy, Luhan beamed brightly at him, making the Korean boy suddenly feel nervous. To think about it, he was going to sleep in the same room with Luhan tonight.
