The fairy tale

The Spell

I squealed when I saw the picture above.

Whoever made it was a genius. Credits to you dear!

-----------------

Sehun leaned his back against the wall, panting hard. He was lost in a maze without a way out and it seemed like he had been searching around for a good hour.

“Sehun ah”

There came again that angelic voice, the one led him to this hide and seek game.

He looked back and forth, tried to remember if he had been to this place before. The hallway was painted plain white with numberless door. Hesitated a bit, he reached out and twisted the nearest knob, opened one of these rooms.

It was empty but somehow Sehun felt like he had stayed here a long time ago. It’s too familiar.

“Sehun ah.”

His stomach jolted back like an instinctive reaction.

Damn it!

He cursed under his breath, wondering where the hell that voice came from and when this kind of game was over. The only thing in this room caught his attention was a curtain striking the wide window with a flapping noise. Moving closer, he drew the curtain and darted his eyes to the outside. His heart skipped a beat as he spotted a small figure stood out from the snow covered ground.

Even though that person was standing with his back facing him, he still recognized immediately. Without a second thought, Sehun stormed out of the room at light speed to wherever his instinct told him that’s the exit. To his dismay, when he finally made it to that place, there was no one there anymore but the scent lingered in the air said the opposite.

“Sehun ah, I miss you.”

The vast space rebounded with that voice one more time. Sehun spun around, scanned his eyes to everywhere he could but nothing came to his sight as if he was being stuck in between some kind of sick parallel world.

“Luhan, where are you?”

He helplessly called out loud in the hope of getting a response but nothing was heard except for his own voice echoed back.

“Luhan, please….I miss you too.”

Blinked his eye slashes few time to gather himself together, Sehun was brought back to reality.

, what the hell…

He mumbled inside his sore throat, hitting his head at the airplane’s window in frustration. That dream had been once his misery for almost a month after his breakup with his boyfriend but he hadn’t had any of it since forever and now from nowhere it came back to haunt him. What he couldn’t figure out was why he never dreamt of seeing Luhan’s face, just his voice coming from somewhere unknown.

Taking a huge gulp of water, Sehun gazed aimlessly into the sky outside the window, wondering whether it was a right choice to fly all back to Korea.

He didn’t know how he could survive through his mental crisis after the shooting day back then. He wanted to rage at something, anything but he couldn’t. He forgot how to fight, how to explode his anger out. Without Luhan, he felt his life was so aimless. No target, no goal, no dream. Because all of them had been crashed down or gone with the Chinese male, along with his heart.

So he made a decision. If he wanted to forget about sweet memories with Luhan, he needed either to work out for the new ones or to wrap himself up with something that didn’t let him a single minute to think about anything else. And he chose the second one.

After being absorbed all his time and energy in research and practicing, he had finally won a scholarship to continue his study at Jacobs School of Music in his last two years of bachelor program. Then he had applied for another refresher fellowship and was on his half way to complete it. People admired his effort and talent. Hyungs said he had been trying to run away from whatever reminded him of Luhan. Sehun just kept his silence and found his own way to move on.

Maybe it was true. Maybe struggling to live in another country pushed him to the fact that he didn’t even have time for himself and it helped him a lot to get over his sorrow. It had been worked perfectly for him even though since that day, he couldn’t open his heart to anyone else, not that he cared anyway.  Until he got a phone call from Jongin a week ago.

“Hey, how are you doing man? I haven’t heard from you since Lunar New Year.”

“Sorry man, the mid-term report is coming. I’m going insane here.”

“Hahaha, aren’t you already crazy?”

“Yah, watch your . Oh, Suho hyung has just told me you were promoted to a team leader. Way to go man!”

“Thanks man, but that’s an old news. Guess who I ran into yesterday?”

“Who? Don’t tell me that’s the you dumped last Christmas. Because oh she’s like a pain in the . ”

“Nope, I don’t think she has enough courage to face me after that accident though.”

“Hahaha, we’ll see. Okay, so who is it then?”

“It’s Luhan hyung.”

And Sehun dropped his phone in reaction. He felt like someone was squeezing his stomach inwardly and it took him a long minute to carry on the conversation with his best friend. Jongin told him to think about the proposal but frankly, his brain had stopped working from the moment the Chinese name was mentioned.

So he did what he was supposed to be. He lost his temper for many vague reasons. He didn’t expect it at all. He didn’t say a word since their breakup didn’t mean he forget all about the pain he had suffered back then. He was getting used to living without thinking about Luhan or memories of their sweet time together and now the said boy showed up, messing with his life again... Who gave him the right to meet his buddy and asked information about him? Who he thought he was to come back and chased after him?

And Jongin simply answered those questions for him.

“He still loves you Sehun ah.”

“Who cares?”

“You do.”

“I d...”

“I know it and you do too so stop your nonsense denial. If you still want to vent your anger on him, this is your only chance. He…”

“I’m not angry wi…”

“Dude, save it for Luhan hyung. And let’s me finish! He said he would wait for you at the place where miracle had happened till the end of next week. Is that you guys long lost secret code anyway?”

“It’s none of your business.”

“Rude as always! Okay, my messenger mission is accomplished. Up to you man.”

So yep, it was all up to him. If he wanted to see Luhan again, it’s quite easy, taking a trip to Korea and faced it like a man he was. If not, much easier, just forget about it and kept on living the now. But inside Sehun’s head, there was a tug of war between those two simple options. It was a mess and he couldn’t think thoroughly.

If it was just about love then it would not give him headache like this. From what he had learnt, it required more than love to get two people together forever and he was not sure Luhan could give him what he needed at the moment. In another word, he was afraid of getting hurt again after four years trying to heal the wound in his heart.

However, somehow knowing the Chinese boy was coming back for him made a part of him suddenly awake from a long sleep, the part he wasn’t aware that still existed, the part that craved for Luhan’s presence unconditionally.

To make it worse, that nightmare kept replaying for a few days since the phone call and he knew the only way to get it out of his head eternally was to having a proper meeting with his ex once to see if there was any chance for them to be on the same road one more time.

Sehun had let fate do them apart before. Now he decided to count on it once again.

*********

Spring Lake Resort didn’t change a lot compared to what he could remember about it.

Luhan had been staying here for three days and did nothing but hanging about in his room all the time. After seeing Jongin, he had spent a few days catching up with his old friends. They talked about random stuffs but no one dared to ask him about his love’s life. Everyone knew the sad ending of his love story with Sehun back then and Luhan couldn’t be more thankful to them for their thoughtfulness because he didn’t told anyone about his plan this time except for Yixing and Jongin.

He thought four days was enough for the younger to make his decision but sadly it had been a week since his last talk with Jongin and there was still no signal of Sehun here. He had prepared himself for the worst but when the chance it would happen rose every single day, he couldn’t help feeling scared and disappointed. He didn’t want to lose his hope that easy but there was no guarantee that Sehun would be willing to give him another chance.

Did he not get the message?

Did he still hate me?

Did he not want to come?

Shaking those negative thoughts out of his head, Luhan breathed out a long sigh and grabbed his coat, deciding to take a walk around. He passed the karaoke section, the flashback of Sehun holding a mic and singing with his low voice made him unconsciously smile. He guessed they were too old to do this now.

 No, scratch that.

If he could win the Korean boy back then nothing stopped him to force the younger to sing for him, at least tenth times or more.  But there was too many “if” already in this situation and waiting for an answer was like an ultimate torture.

His feet led him to the back area of the resort, where white snow was the only thing he could see. It was almost end of February but the weather was still frozen to the marrow. Luhan tugged the collar of his coat up high, trying to give a little warmth to his cold hands by rubbing them continuously together. He forgot to bring an extra pair of gloves and his only ones had gotten wet when he went to the spring on the first day here.

Today was the last day of the compromise he had told Jongin and the anxiety kept increasing inside him as the first step of his plan was likely a big failure. He took out his phone to see it already passed noon. He had skipped breakfast this morning, no wonder why his stomach was growling.

Letting out a small sigh, Luhan slowly sat on his heels and wrote down something on the snow, a sad smile was plastered on his face. If Sehun didn’t come, would he have enough confidence to continue this chasing? He was not sure any more. The sudden thought sent tear to the corner of his eyes and Luhan let it fall down on his cheeks.

He sat like that for a good minute before stood up and turned around, about to head back to the restaurant for lunch. However, he barely made any step.

Not far from where he was got tied up, Sehun was standing with his typical emotionless facial expression, watching him silently. It was so strange how he had dreamt about this scene before and now when it was displayed in front of his eyes, he couldn’t open his mouth to say a proper hello. It felt like the time was stopped and everything became frozen around them.

They stared at each other just like the first time they met at the blind date, unreadable mixture of feeling, but this time, Sehun was the one who stepped up to break the moment.

“What are you doing here?”

His voice was still as low as Luhan could remember

“I’m waiting for a miracle.” he simply smiled along with a shrug

Slowly slipping both hands into his coat pocket, Sehun looked around then dropped his eyes back to the older one, asking vaguely

“Did it happen yet?”

“I think it just did.”

Luhan nodded in reply, carefully approached to the other’s direction, that happy smile never left his lips. When he was at about two arms length away from Sehun, the younger held up his hand and motioned him to stop. A small thing in the Korean boy’s hand sparkling under the weak sunray caught his attention.

It was a ring. Their couple ring.

“I took it off since the day you left me.” Sehun spoke up, took a quick glance at the symbol of his long lost love before shifted to Luhan again “I didn’t even recognize it’s still in my drawer until yesterday. Tell me a reason to not throw it right away.”

It’s not like he was expecting a particular answer, it’s just the way Sehun told the other how hurt he was back then and how much he wanted to erase all those memories about them. But when he was on the edge to do something crazy, it’s what this love left inside had stopped him from causing damage to himself and other people as well. And the way Luhan held up his hand to show what he wished to see was enough for a reason.

“I think it’s the same here.”

“What is it?”

“Because it reminds me that I never stop loving you.”

Luhan kept on his steady gaze, examined the boy in front of him. Sehun didn’t change much except for the part now he had more mature appearance. But his face was somehow remained the same and his eyes, those eyes that were staring at him with an unreadable expression, still had some kind of invisible attraction. The younger had come here to see him but that didn’t mean he agreed to continue what they had left off, and frankly that was what the Chinese was afraid of at this moment.

They stayed in that position for a while as if they could communicate by their eyes until Luhan decided to make his move, after all he the one who started it.

“Sehun ah, I have so many to tell you in my head but I guess now might be not the right time to say anything. I’ll prove it by my action if you let me have a chance.”

Sehun his lips nervously like an old habit. When the figure of Luhan had come to sight earlier, his heart couldn’t help but beating loudly and he finally knew why he was here. He desired to see a miracle too. But he also wanted to make sure if this miracle could last forever.

“You know, getting over you was like the hardest thing that I have been through and it’s a lie to say that I ever made it.” he closed his eyes to swallow down the emotional lump lodged at his throat  “How do I know it will work this time Luhan?”

“I’ll do whatever you want.” the smaller one looked straight in his eyes, confidence was all he could see “How about we starting with me introducing you to my family?”

Luhan continued without even a small hesitation and Sehun flinched at the sudden proposal.

“What? Are you serious? I mean….”

“Of course I am.” he cut off the latter’s sentence along with a firm nod “But we have to wait for my dad to come back from his business trip. I’ll take you to visit my mom’s grave first though if you want.”

“Your mom…she’s….” Sehun uttered, didn’t see any of those coming.

The Chinese boy paused in a split of second, lowered his head a bit whenever he mentioned about his mother, sadness lingered at the top of his tongue.

“She passed away two years ago.”

“I’m so sorry, Luhan.”

“It’s okay.” the older boy smiled softly, it’s not the time for regret or sorrow anymore “Look, remember when I said I wanted to announce our love to the whole world outside. Now I’m more than ready to do it Sehun ah. Just…just give me a chance.”

The minute after that was the longest period of time Luhan had experienced because it seemed like the latter was debating with himself for what to do next.  It was not until he saw a small sigh let out of Sehun’s mouth and the younger’s arms were open wide did he know he was accepted again.

“C’mere you idiot.”

And Luhan took no time to jump into that tight embrace and crashed down their bodies onto the snow covered ground. He heard the other mumbled gruntingly due to the pain but he also heard a blissful chuckle somewhere at his throat as well so he assumed it’s alright for them to just lying like this.

“I miss you Sehun ah.” he whispered against the crook of Sehun’s neck, taking a long deep inhale of his familiar scent.

It felt like a déjà vu to Sehun as that angelic voice echoed to his ear but he knew it’s not a dream anymore. He still didn’t believe in happily ever after ending but he couldn’t care more, because from now on, he’s going to write his own fairy tale with the love of his life, the one who no doubt could make him fall over and over again.

His Luhan.

************

“Guess who’s back?”

“Exo?”

“Haha, funny…but nope, it’s Hunhan.”

“What Hunh…. Oh my God, Sehun and Luhan? You’re not kidding right?”

“I’m abso-ing-lutely serious.”

“How? When?”

“I don’t know the detail but let’s just say, my spell worked perfectly for them.”
