The drawing

The Spell

Seoul International University of Art (SIA) was one of the most famous universities in Korea, not only because of its quality (the entrance exams gave a lot of people headache) but also its welcome festival help up at the beginning of school-year.

This was the only chance for all the clubs to introduce and enroll freshmen into their club. Therefore throughout the campus, there came a tacit war among them, using every method they could do to make good impression and induce newcomers to join their activities.

However, that was not what everyone talking about.  The most expected event was the Miss SIA and the traditional blind date drawing which took place in the hall afterwards. They sold a limited quantity of ticket for the outsiders and each ticket had a number for the drawing. The Student Council was in charge of making the date really happen no matter what by establishing some rules in SIA’s Regulations. To be one of the lucky people who got involved this event, there were people standing in a queue in front of the gate one day before the festival and the tickets were sold out only thirty minutes. All of them wanted to have a slight chance to go out with a handsome/smart boy and moreover, they wished the spell would work for them, a spell that was spread from generations.

*********

Sehun looked at the ticket in his hand one more time before crumpled it up and threw into a trash bin on his way to the hall. Why did you need a ticket as you’re already at the backstage, working like a slave from early in the morning, Sehun thought. If it hadn’t been Jongin, who forced him to be his co-worker in this project, he wouldn’t have come to this festival at all. Being a second-year student in Music Department, Sehun was quite famous for his own good looking and talent. He had won the second place at the Junior Violinist Contest held up in Jeju last year and was in the top ten ranking by the total score at the end of school-year in his department. People thought he was perfect and he couldn’t care more. What they didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them.

The campus was getting more and more crowded by people dressing like they were going to a party. Sehun sped up his pace to get rid of being surrounded by a bunch of girls who were talking about someone named Luhan with really high excitement.

“Did you see Luhan oppa earlier? He’s so cool.”

“Really? Arhhh, you’re so lucky.”

“If only I had a date with him…”

“I heard he’s dating someone right now.”

“It’s just rumor! No girl deserves him.”

Urghh…Fan girls! How annoying!  Where the hell are you Jongin?

Sehun turned right at the cafeteria to escape from the chaos he was stuck with previously, fished out his phone to call his friends.

“Hello? Hyung, where are you?” he almost shouted from the overloud noise.

“Sehun? Quick, they are going to announce the number.”

Baekhyun’s enthusiastic voice made the younger boy winkle his brow. They’re doing lottery?

“Tell the others I’m waiting outside.” Sehun decided to stay away from the crowd “At the café.”

“Oh, okay.”

There was a slight disappointment in his hyung’s tone but Sehun just shrugged, disconnected the call and chose a table in the corner. Jieun, the waitress welcomed him with shocking big eyes, clearly not expect a customer at this time.

“Sehun? What are you doing here?”

Sehun looked up with his usual face

“Having a drink. What else would I do in a café?”

Jieun crossed her arms, she finally got used to his attitude just few months ago since the whole group became the shop’s patrons.

“You really couldn’t be any friendlier huh. And I meant why you’re here while everyone is having fun in the hall down there.”

“It’s noisy. Besides, I can have fun here, with you entertaining.”

Still with his hard-to-read expression, Sehun lifted his chin up, gazed at the waitress who was staring at him in response. After a long minute eyes-contest, Jieun blinked and stomped her feet on the ground, her heels back to the counter.

“You’re no fun noona!”

The younger boy called after her, chuckling. He didn’t wait long before a cup of bubble tea placed a little bit harshly in front of him. Flashing his rare smile, Sehun bid a thank you and dug in his favorite drink. Jieun gave him a sideways look and smacked the tray on his arm.

“You should smile more!”

Sehun rubbed the hit spot on his arm, watching the waitress walking to the back of the café. To think about it, he used to smile a lot when he was young. But after so many fights he involved in junior high, he eventually stopped showing his emotion. He also stopped making new friends, making conversation with strangers. To his opinion, the less people knew about him, the better.

A loud mixture of laugh and voices snapped him back, brought his view to the entrance. There came five other boys, all grinning and sweating like they just finished a marathon.

“Sehun ah!”

The tan-skin boy rushed to his table and immediately grabbed the cup, taking a huge gulp. When the whole group already sat down, Baekhyun spoke up with sparkle in his eyes.

“You’re going to a blind date this weekend.”

Sehun blinked several times, he even looked over his shoulder to make sure his hyung didn’t talk to someone behind him.

“Blind date?” the youngest boy asked confusingly.

“Yep, our traditional blind date.” this time Chanyeol butted in, his creepy smile sometimes sent cold shiver to Sehun’s spine. “You got the lucky number.”

Sehun was stunned by the news for a second before shook his head doubtfully.

“What number? What blind date? Hyung I don’t understand.”

His hyungs exchanged each other are-you-kidding-me looks before Jongin clapped his hand as if he discovered something.

“Ah, he was in Jeju this time last year. No wonder why he looks so clueless.”

And as always a good friend, Jongin slowly explained.

“Remember the ticket I gave you, it has a number for the blind date drawing. The date is set up in a format and you have to follow all the guideline they gave you. And one of the lucky numbers this year is 412, which is on your ticket. I remember it because it’s also your birthday.”

Sehun swallowed the lump stuck in his throat, it took his brain almost half of minute to function all the information given. Why nobody told him that damn ticket was not just a ticket. He didn’t need a date right now, in fact, he couldn’t stand going out with a girl. From what he had learned, it’s troublesome.

“Can I…just not come or simply make a compromise with whoever has the other number?”

All the eyes now gazed at the only person that could answer that question. Suho who was a member of the Student Council shook his head slightly, fished out a small book from his backpack, flipped over some pages before handed to the youngest boy.

“Sorry maknae, you have to do it. It’s traditional.”

Sehun read the whole page in a one go with his eyes getting bigger in every second then threw it on the table harshly.

“What the hell is this?” he exclaimed “I’m really going to be grounded if I don’t do it?”

Suho just nodded, sending his sympathy to the boy sitting across the table. Chanyeol quickly picked up the book and elbowed Baekhyun to read with him, wondered what kind of book that made the youngest lose his temper like that. Seeing Sehun facepalming himself in frustration, D.O being the Umma of the group, gently suggested.

“Hyung, can you ask the President if there is any way to get him out of this?”

The oldest male bit his lip thinking. His friendship with Kris was very good, maybe he could use a favor. Dialing the number on his phone, the leader patted Sehun’s shoulder reassured

“Okay, I’ll try.”

After a long conversation with the President, Suho plopped back to his chair, his lips curved into a big grin.

“I have good news!”

Sehun immediately looked up, leaned in to hold the edge of the table eagerly.

“You got me out of this?”

The latter paused a moment as he was caught off guard and sniffed.

“Okay, I have news. You could find someone to go for you and inform to the Council before tomorrow noon. Just give him your ticket and you’re free.”

“If you want I’ll go for you.” Jongin beamed brightly, his hair “A blind date sounds fun to me.”

That was why you always needed friends, to help each other when you reached deadlock.

D.O’s face was lightened up, he stretched out his hand toward Sehun’s direction.

“Problem sovled! Now give me your ticket.”

There Sehun went again facepalm himself. This was so gonna happen to him, like seriously, how was he supposed to know to keep that piece of paper after all.

“I threw it away” the youngest boy murmured.

And that was when everyone was dropped into an awkward atmosphere where the maknae still digging his face into his palms, D.O comforting him by his back gently, Jongin pursing his lips not knowing what to do, Chanyeol and Baekhyun couldn’t care more, enjoyed reading the book with an amused expression and Suho kept having a weird smirk on his lips.

After a few minutes blaming himself for being so reckless of the consequence of a simple action, Sehun slowly stood up, rubbing his temple. The whole blind date really made him dizzy and he needed to lie down before his head actually exploded.

“I go back dorm hyung.”

“Okay, get some rest maknae. We see you tomorrow.”

When the youngest boy’s figure was out of sight, D.O darted his eyes to the leader’s direction, tapping his chin suspiciously.

“I smell something fishy. Spit it out hyung.”

Suho scanned all his dongsaengs before leaned back on his chair comfortably. He knew his little brother would kick his if he found out that he kept this as a secret, but the fun after that was something really worth risky.

“Kris told me who got the other number.”

He paused a moment to get more attention from the others, even Chanyeol dropped the book on his thigh to lock his eyes on the oldest male in the table.

“It’s Kungfu Panda Tao from Sport Department.”
