Chapter 9: Best Friend Strikes Again

For A Happy Ending

Yikes, so sorry guys...it's a second update, but it's really, really shortttttt.... Writer's block... *growls*

When Myungsoo and Sungyeol boarded the bus, It was virtually empty, except for a little girl and her mother. Sungyeol flashed them both a smile before they sat down. On the ride back, nobody else got on or off. The farmers were already at the market, or working in the fields, and the rest of the population were probably still asleep at home.

"I had fun too." Sungyeol's eyes crinkled up in a grin, and then he closed his eyes, and fell asleep against the window, head lolling against the glass. Myungsoo watched him for a while. He'd wake the guy up when they arrived. One seat behind them, the little girl and her mother began to talk. Myungsoo didn't mean to eavesdrop, but he couldn't help overhearing their conversation.

"Min-ah, Mum's got this for you." Myungsoo turned his head slightly, to see what the mother held up. It was a lollipop, flat and round, and a clear yellow colour, wrapped in plastic secured with a ribbon. The child's eyes lit up, and she clapped her hands, and reached for the treat. Myungsoo smiled at that. It must be great to be a kid. They didn't have to bother their heads about love, about impending death (not that he minded this too much).

"It's lemon candy, Min-ah." The woman smiled down at her child. The little girl didn't respond, and continued reaching for the lolly.

"Do you remember? Granny used to make this for you." The mother still held the sweet out of reach, and the child whined a little, shook her head, and her fat fingers grabbed hold of the corner of the wrapper.

"Do you remember Granny?" The mother tried again. Then gave up, and let the child have the sweet. There was no spark of recognition in the child's eyes.

Myungsoo stopped watching, and listening to their conversation, because his chest suddenly felt tighter. It wasn't the hurt of another attack that he felt right now, but sympathy for the forgotten grandmother.

Myungsoo glanced at Sungyeol, who was sleeping with his mouth slightly open, and head thrown back against the seat. Myungsoo's throat hurt. Would Sungyeol forget him too, after his two months were up? Cold fear grabbed at his heart. If Sungyeol didn't remember, then who else would hold the memories of their time together? Who else would remember how they first met, that day at the hospital, when Myungsoo thought Sungyeol the strangest person he'd ever met? Who else would remember how Sungyeol had made the path towards Myungsoo, and only Myungsoo when they'd played cards with Myungsoo's friends that day? Who else would remember having fun on the beach, and spending the night under the stars?

It'd be as if Sungyeol had never met Myungsoo, as if they'd never been friends. Myungsoo felt selfish, but he wanted Sungyeol to remember him, even after two months were up. For the first time since he'd received the information, Myungsoo hated the fact that he was going to die soon. Myungsoo didn't want to die. Not just yet. He wanted to spend more time with Sungyeol, he wanted to be friends with Sungyeol for just a while longer.

Myungsoo wasn't afraid of death. He was simply afraid of never seeing Sungyeol again.

So, when the bus rolled to their stop, and Myungsoo nudged Sungyeol awake, in time for them to stumbled off the bus, still looking slightly dishevelled from their night at the beach, he turned away from Sungyeol, and composed himself, and tried phrasing his question, so that Myungsoo wouldn't seem like the sad, desperate person that he was.

"Remember me." Myungsoo hated the way his voice shook, hated the way his throat closed with surprise tears, hated the way he didn't sound strong. Behind him, Sungyeol placed a hand on his back. Myungsoo leaned into the touch.

"Hmm?" Sungyeol didn't understand what his friend was talking about. He leaned his head on the boy's shoulder. He was sleepy.

"Remember me, okay? After my two months..."

After I die.

Those were the words behind what Myungsoo was saying, and Sungyeol seemed to hear them too, because his chin rested even more heavily on Myungsoo's shoulder, and he rested his hand on Myungsoo's free shoulder. Myungsoo turned around, to hear Sungyeol's answer. It was too important for him not to see Sungyeol's face when he spoke.

Sungyeol let his head fall forward, and his fringe covered his face.

"I will." And after a pause, when Myungsoo strained to hear what he'd say next, "I promise."

Myungsooo felt a whole lot better, and both of them tried not to look at the two small, salty wet patches on Myungsoo's shoulder, where Sungyeol's chin had been. Sungyeol didn't feel like going home just yet, so he dragged Myungsoo into one of the road-side cafes, and used his puppy-dog eyes to get Myungsoo to hand over another crumpled note, so he could get them both milkshakes. Myungsoo turned around, to grab a seat.

"Hey. Myungsoo."

Why was his best friend here? Myungsoo's smile faltered, as he kept his eyes on Sungyeol, over at the counter, buying their drinks. He didn't understand why it was so hard to look him in the eye. Was he too ashamed of his confession? Or was he just too afraid of the rejection reflected in those orbs? Myungsoo didn't understand.

Maybe he never would.

"You know what I said the other day?"

Myungsoo nodded his head robotically, then thought better of it, and shook his head. His best friend nodded his head, and the corners of his mouth pulled up in a smile that didn't reach his eyes. It was so condescending it hurt.

"Be my boyfriend. For today."

Myungsoo frowned, and tried to say no, but the words stuck in his mouth, and he choked on them. So he waved his hands in the air. But the guy caught hold of them, and held tight, so that Myungsoo faltered again, and melted completely, when he added a low 'I need you'. Myungsoo knew this wouldn't be his best friend's true feelings for him, and that this would ultimately kill his heart afterwards, and Myungsoo absolutely hated, loathed himself for being to weak.

"Myung--" Sungyeol came back carrying two tall milkshakes, and saw the look on Myungsoo's face and stopped.

"Should I come back later?"

And Myungsoo still found it diffucilt to force out a strangled, but heartfelt 'no'. Myungsoo just watched him, as he was dragged away by the hand (Myungsoo tried not to think too much about it, lest he freak out, and lose his mind), and left Sungyeol with two huge drinks, way too much for just one person to finish.

Chapter 4: First of all, congratulations for writing such an awesome piece. I'm new to Infinite and Seongyeol is my bias and I ship Myungyeol/Sooyeol friendship so much. This is one intellectually and finely written fanfic I have ever read. (I'm new to fanfics too but I have read many & this is 2nd one to my standards of very well composed ones.) All the love to you!
