Chapter 17: Stranger VS Myungyeol
For A Happy Ending
Embarrassed Myungyeol... :)
Myungsoo's shoulder was jerked backwards, so that he was forced to turn away from Sungyeol, and face the owner of the vice-like grip on his shoulder. He staggered a little, eyebrows scrunching up together, prepared to lash out at the person who had so rudely interrupted his interrogation of Sungyeol, but he never got around to it.
Perhaps it was Sungyeol's steadying hands on his back, gentle touches to advice him to keep quiet, or maybe it was the sudden rush of recognisation that killed the angry words on the tip of his tongue.
It was the guy with huge arms, and scuffed shoes. The one he'd seen through the peep hole in his front door, that night, when Sungyeol'd slept at his place.
The huge guy smirked. Myungsoo straightened himself up, and counted the amount of teeth the guy's one upturned lip showed, and watched one silver tooth gleam dully in the morning light.
Guys like him are nothing to be afraid of, Myungsoo told himself, they're all brawn and no brain.
"Yo."
The menacing stranger lifted his right hand off Myungsoo to stick it in the air, two fingers pointing up, and the rest of the digits relaxed and slightly curled. His voice was grating, mocking. Myungsoo shifted his stance a little.
"Hi." Myungsoo's voice was low, even, careful. He was wary.
The big guy threw back his head and laughed, a coarse booming sound that made Myungsoo want to cringe from the fakeness it carried. Not cool, not cool at all.
"I wasn't talking to you, squirt. Stay out of it." The guy lowered his hand, and swatted at Myungsoo, as if he was an annoying fly or something. And that got on his nerves. Myungsoo tried to hold onto the lid of his temper, as he stumbled in front of the guy for the second time that day.
Who did he think he was.
"I was talking to Yeollie--"
The way he pronounced Sungyeol's name was so saccharine, and sickly sweet that Myungsoo actually shuddered.
"--wasn't I, guys?" The guy stepped back to reveal the rest of his pack, that had followed him outside Myungsoo's place that day. There were five big, scruffy guys in all. The situation didn't look good to Myungsoo.
Myungsoo turned his head around, to look at Sungyeol, hoping against hope that his best friend was a friendly accquaintance of these rough-looking boys, that that one time when he'd seen Sungyeol flee from them was just for fun's sake. But one look at Sungyeol's face killed all his doubts.
Sungyeol's eyes were huge--bigger than he'd ever seen them go. The boy's head jerked from left to right, between Myungsoo and the distance they both were from Myungsoo's school, as if he was comtemplating throwing Myungsoo out of harm's way. Myungsoo backed away a little, to stand by Sungyeol, to try to show that he wasn't alone.
"Come here, Yeollie..." The leader guy spread open his arms wide, as if to envelope Sungyeol in a huge hug, but Myungsoo couldn't believe that the guy just wanted to cuddle with Sungyeol. There was untold malice in the guys' eyes.
"Now hold on a second..." Myungsoo tried to step in between the huge boy and Sungyeol, in a vain attempt to divert the attention away from Sungyeol.
"I said, I wasn't talking to you!" The stranger lowered his arms once more, and gave a stronger shove to his chest. Myungsoo lost his footing again, and went careening into the rough brick wall beside the pavement. His head contacted the cold, grazing material, and Myungsoo's hand slapped against the wall to prevent his face from rubbing itself out on the bricks. He stayed like that for a while, then raised one hesitant hand to the side of his forehead.
Sungyeol hadn't moved when the big guy had called for him, but when Myungsoo was sent flying, his body jerked as if he'd been hit too, watching Myungsoo crash into the wall with a sickening thump. When Myungsoo's hand came away from his head, and there was a splash of something dark, and sticky painted across it, Sungyeol's hand flew into action.
He balled his hand into a fist, scrunched his eyes tightly shut, and threw a punch at the perpetrator's head. His hand contacted flesh, and it hit it with a satisfying thump. It was probably one of the silliest things he'd ever done.
After the punch, there was a stunned silence, and only then did Sungyeol dare to open his eyes.
