Chapter 28: Earrings

For A Happy Ending

Hey guys!! I'm back!! (sorry for the unexpected wait for the next chappie....homework happened....><) But anyways... I'll update again tonight if possible xD!! *prepares for a night with little sleep....gogogo!!* Haha, I'm kinda surprised that none of you guys really picked at this particular issue, but if you guys haven't noticed, Sungyeol's birthday is portrayed to be in winter in this story, when his actual birthday falls in August. Yeah. Kinda far off... So sorry for this, but I kinda had plans for the end of this story already in my mind, and I had to fit in his birthday somehow too... so.... yeahh.... Anyways, thank you for reading, and don't forget to subscribe, comment and vote up (that little grey arrow beside the title in the forword xD)

Sungyeol...

Myungsoo made his tired mind focus on his lover's Sungyeol's face again, staring at his ceiling through the darkness that was just about to fade into dawn. He'd spent the whole night like that, sleepless, rigid.

Nothing. Still nothing. One whole entire night spent thinking, and no ideas to show for it.

Myungsoo slapped a palm to his face wearily, then tugged at his hair in frustration. Think, think, think! Myungsoo pictured Sungyeol's face in his head once again.

Sungyeol...

Still no ideas. Myungsoo his side, one half of his face smushed to his pillow. He was dead tired, but he couldn't sleep in peace until he'd made up his mind on what to get Sungyeol. If they'd remained as friends, there wouldn't be (this big) a problem. Myungsoo could probably get him a nice shirt (black and plaid shirts were the best. Period.), or a hat (one could never go wrong with a black hat), or a scarf (with winter well on it's way, a black scarf would be perfect for Sungyeol), and still feel pretty satisfied with himself. But they weren't just friends anymore.

Myungsoo smiled to himself in the gloom, rubbing his face into his pillow in delight and wonderment.

Two kisses. Nothing much so far. But Myungsoo remembered how awesome they'd been, how amazing Sungyeol's lips felt to kiss, how wonderful Sungyeol was at kissing. Myungsoo stopped smiling for a while. Maybe that kiss in the park hadn't been Sungyeol's first ever. Maybe he'd had lots of experience in the art of it. Myungsoo's heart dropped, but he shook himself out of it. It didn't matter who Sungyeol had been with in the past. Now all that mattered was the fact that Sungyeol was his, and his only at the moment.

A little voice still nagged at the back of his head, so Myungsoo tried to picture Sungyeol's face in his head once more.

Sungyeol...

GOD DAMMIT. WHY WAS THIS SO DIFFICULT.

Myungsoo groaned, pulled the cover over his head, and proceeded to tug at his hair again.

"Hyung!"

Sungyeol's little brother knocked on the door. There was no answer, so naturally, he let himself in. Sungyeol was slumped at his desk in the very same position that he'd been in last night when his little brother had gone in to disturb him. Sungyeol had been unusually unresponsive to his pestering, and even now his brother hadn't looked up from the papers on his desk.

"Hyung?" Sungyeol's little brother tried again, coming up behind him, and taking a peek at the stuff on his desk. His eyes widened. Sungyeol had (probably) pulled an all-nighter doing homework?! On the eve of his birthday, on a Saturday evening. Sungyeol was mad. Sungyeol's little brother looked at his hyung uncertaintly.

Perhaps he was ill?

"Hyung..." He shook Sungyeol's shoulder, until at last, his brother uttered something unintelligible. Sungyeol looked slowly up from his work, and his little brother could practically hear the creaks in his neck from being fixed in that position all night long. His little brother caught sight of his face, and gasped out loud.

Sungyeol looked terrible. Sungyeol looked like a zombie. He looked down again, and added a last full stop to what looked like an essay.

"I..." Sungyeol murmured, and his brother had to process the sound before he could make any sense of it, "I'm finished..."

His little brother looked alarmed. Don't die!!!!

"No more homework..." Sungyeol gave a half-drunken smile, eyelids drooping lower and lower. "I can spend the rest of the weekend with Myungsoo."

Ah, then his little brother understood the situation. He rolled his eyes.

"Totally head over heels." The younger boy shook his head. Sungyeol looked up sharply.

"What did you say?" Sungyeol's eyes narrowed, and in his zombie-ified state, he looked truly terrifying. His little brother gulped and gave a nervous giggle.

"I said, happy birthday, hyung!"

Sungyeol didn't look convinced, but he was just too tired at that moment to care. He folded his arms on the table, laid his head on them and proceeded to have a quick nap that he was desperately in need of.

Myungsoo looked at the rack of clothes before him. They were black, and therefore perfect to him, but he just couldn't imagine Sungyeol wearing them. The boy'd look awesome, Myungsoo had to admit, but the image just wasn't Sungyeol enough. And that bugged him.

Myungsoo sighed, and walked out of yet another clothes shop he'd scoured from shelf to shelf in the shopping mall. He went to sit by the little fountain bubbling cheerfully in the middle of the building, and glared at it as if insulted. It was about one and a half hours away from the party, and four shopping malls, and scouring of countless shops later, Myungsoo still didn't have the foggiest notion of what to get the boy. Before, this problem was merely frustrating, but now it was truly nervewracking. Time was running out. And Myungsoo had to find the perfect present for Sungyeol.

Afterall, this would be Sungyeol's only birthday Myungsoo would be able to celebrate with him. Myungsoo buried his head in his hands. What should he do?!

"Oppa!" A shrill voice cut through his despair.

Myungsoo looked up to see a couple pass by in front of him. The girl was acting all clingy, latching onto her boyfriend's arm. She was acting all cutsey, and laying on aegyo way too thick, and Myungsoo couldn't be more glad that Sungyeol didn't--and would never--act like that. Myungsoo smiled a little.

"Mmm?" Her boyfriend tapped a finger to her nose lovingly, scrunching up his own nose adorably at her, making Myungsoo gag mentally. They were in public. Why? Why did they have to act so sickly. Geez.

"Let's go in there!" She jabbed a finger in the direction of a tiny jewellery shop tucked away in a more lonely corner of the shopping mall, "There's plenty of couple items there..." She opened her eyes wide in an attempt at looking innocently winning, but to Myungsoo, she only looked like a startled fish or something.

Myungsoo glanced at the jewellery shop once more. He'd missed it when he'd scoured the shops in the building, following the logic that Sungyeol was a guy, and probably didn't want something so girly as a necklace or bracelet for his birthday, and he'd forgotten about the couple trinkets that were usually sold in those kinds of shops. Normally, couple stuff bought from the many shops that sold the little baubles and mementos turned Myungsoo off, because they looked so cheap, and made people look as if they were trying too hard (couples should be identified by the affection the two lovebirds showed for each other, and not merchandise they sported), but Myungsoo was desperate. He decided to follow the couple into the shop, feeling slightly uncomfortable about entering it.

The shop was tiny, wedged into a corner by newer, brighter, cleaner, bigger shops that dwarfed it. Looking at the heavy-looking wooden-framed display window and door, Myungsoo felt like the little shop was out of place in the modern shopping complex. He looked at the items on display, pretty little trinkets and baubles that would catch female attention. Beyond that, the shop was too dimly lit, and Myungsoo couldn't see any futher in.

He pushed open the chunky oak-and-glass door.

There was a soft tinkle when it shut behind him. Myungsoo took in the store before him. For some odd reason, he couldn't seem to see the couple anywhere anymore. He shrugged, and carried on his search for Sungyeol's present.

The shop smelt a little like herbs--not the strong scent of a traditional medicine shop, but something more warm and gentle. Myungsoo couldn't place a finger on it. Inside was lit by a single lamp that hung from the ceiling and gave off a soft orange glow. The little shop was cluttered with stuff, and although there were shelves set up along every wall in an attempt at orderliness, baskets of necklaces, bracelets, rings still lined the floor haphazardly. Myungsoo liked the place--it was cozy.

He ran a hand through his hair, and walked towards the shelves to his right. It held necklaces, pretty things made of delicately woven silver, and made Myungsoo wonder at the intricate work of unknown hands. How did anyone even create details that small? Myungsoo replaced the chain that he'd picked up, careful not to break the lovely thing. All the items on the shelf were similarly complicated, and Myungsoo didn't want to wonder about the price. Sparkly necklaces weren't really Sungyeol's thing.

He stopped at the next shelf, which housed bronze bracelets studded with numerous stones he'd never seen before. Myungsoo's eyes tried to follow the swirls of the pattern carved on one bangle. These were crafted with the same amazing skill, but once more, Myungsoo didn't think he could afford such a special thing, and again he couldn't imagine Sungyeol wearing it anyway.

Myungsoo crouched by a basket of rings by his feet. These were beautiful too, and it certaintly was a romantic notion to get Sungyeol a couple ring to remember him by, but Myungsoo didn't know Sungyeol's finger-size (Myungsoo wondered how men bought engagement rings that fit properly). He didn't want to buy one to find that it was too small for Sungyeol to slip on, or that it was too big, and Sungyeol lost it because it fell off easily.

No. Not couple rings either then. Myungsoo's right hand mussed up his hair in frustration. This shop didn't have what he wanted either. Disappointed, Myungsoo turned around, about to get out of there.

"Aurghhh!" He leapt back, startled by the appearance of a little old lady beaming up at him. When had she gotten there? How long had she been watching him for?!

"Mmm... That is a tough task..." The old woman's face looked like an inflated walnut, what with how tanned and wrinkled her skin was. Myungsoo reaised his mouth was hanging agape, and shut it hurriedly.

"Birthday present huh?" She placed a fist on her hip, and surveyed the small room with her bright eyes. Wrinkles on her forehead smoothed themselves out, and new ones formed around as she relaxed her pondering frown to smile again.

"How about this?" She rummaged in her apron pocket for something, and pulled out a small black velvet box. She handed it to Myungsoo who took it blankly from her.

"Well?" She gestured impatiently. "Open it."

Myungsoo stopped gawking at her and tugged it open. He stared at the tiny specks of silver winking at him. At first, he'd been skeptical, and hadn't really taken the items in the box seriously--the old woman was probably just using a marketing ploy to make him purchase her goods. But then he took a closer look at the two dots nestled in black cloth.

A narrow silver strip curved downwards, twisted upwards, and then continued on its previous path once more to meld with itself, merging the end of the silver strip with its start, so the line it created never broke and the eye followed it over and over again, in a dizzying, neverending cycle. It's twin glinted softly next to it.

"Figures of eight." Myungsoo breathed. They looked so magical, so perfect, that he was afraid speaking loudly would break the charm they seemed to hold him under.

The old woman looked at the earrings. She smiled, shook her head.

"Infinite. The sign of forever more."

And Myungsoo grinned too, because that was what he wanted the memories he'd created with Sungyeol to be.

"I'll take these please."
