ELLY: For a moment I just stand there, watching Rina trying to make out with Doyeon, who’s too stunned to respond, either to resist or cooperate. It’s equal parts funny and hot, but I’ve got to stop it. I step forward, grab Rina by the hair, and pull her off Doyeon. “Rina,” I say severely, “that’s not how we treat our unnies.” “I just. . . you. . . she. . . oooh. . .” She doesn’t know to react. I can tell she wants to be either embarrassed or angry, and embarrassment was gradually coming out on top. She quietly says “I’m sorry Doyeon” I let got of her hair and smooth it down. “It’s okay,” Doyeon says as she wipes , “just surprising is all.” She laughs nervously. “I might like it if I produced that reaction everywhere I go.” I mentally roll my eyes. The only reason Doyeon doesn’t produce that reaction everywhere she goes is that most people know better than to just start kissing random people. Rina blushes and takes a step closer to me. Taking pity on her, I close the distance between us and put my arm around her shoulders. I look at Doyeon. “Anyway, you said you had something you wanted to talk to us about.” “Oh, yeah,” Doyeon says, her mind having been brought back to the track it was on before Rina detailed it. “I just wanted to apologize to you for all the drama I caused. I know that I wasn’t the one who sent Suyeon to try to break you up, but I created plenty of other drama, and that can’t have helped matters.” She sounds sincere, as well as sounding remarkable self-aware for Doyeon, who’s never really been the introspective type. “Thanks,” I say. “I really appreciate that.” “Yeah,” Rina says, shrinking a little closer to me. “Thank you, Doyeon-unnie. And I’m sorry I kissed you like that.” “That’s okay,” Doyeon says, “you two obviously had something going on before I came up. And anyway, it wasn’t entirely unpleasant.” “Not entirely unpleasant!” Rina exclaims. She tries to scowl at Doyeon, but her embarrassment gets the better of her again and she turns and buries her face in my shoulder. Taking pity on Rina, I change subject again. “So Doyeon, how are things with you and Yoojung now?” Doyeon shrugs. “She’s still mad at me, but she said if I apologized to all our members, she’ll think about taking me back, so that’s how I’ve been spending my evening.” “Well, good luck,” I say, “and if you’ll excuse us, Rina and I have some things we need to talk about before dinner.” LUA: Lucy and I are still watching figure skating. She’s lying with her head in my lap and I’m absent-mindedly playing with her hair. Commercials come on, and I decide it’s time to start talking before I lose my nerve. “Lucy?” I say quietly.
