YOOJUNG: I should probably wake Suyeon, but this is too funny so I just sit on the couch and watch her sleep for a bit. She sleeping on the floor in the middle of the common room. Lua’s sleeping on one side of her, curled up into a little bag, and Sei’s sleeping on the other side, using Suyeon’s thigh as a pillow. By the time I finally decided that the time had come to wake her up, Suyeon ended up saving me the trouble by waking herself up when she tried to roll over and failed. I sit there and watch in silent amusement as she tries to figure out where she is and what’s holding her leg down. “Good morning, sleeping beauty,” I say. “I was wondering if you’d wake up on your own or if I’d have to wake you up.” Suyeon looks around, still confused. “What happened? Why and I sleeping out here.” “Oh,” I say with a laugh, “you had a big day yesterday and apparently you couldn’t make it back to your room before falling asleep. And apparently Sei and Lua were worn out from babysitting you, so they went to sleep next to you — or in Sei’s case, on you — under the theory that if you got up, you’d wake them up and they could keep you from getting into any trouble.” “Babysitting? Trouble? Big day?” Suyeon’s sitting up now. She looks like she’s on the verge of panic. “You’re not making any sense, Yoojung! Can’t you just explain to me what happened? And why I can’t remember yesterday evening?” I mark my page, close my book, and put it down on the coffee table — this is probably cruel, but it’s so rare that Suyeon s up like this that I can’t help myself. I’ve just got to have a little fun with her. “After the drama of yesterday morning, I baked some herbally enhanced brownies. You with me so far?” Suyeon nods. I can see it on her face as she makes the various connections in her brain. “So anyway,” I continue, “after I left the apartment, you apparently ate enough of my brownies to get eight ordinary people high. Fortunately, for you, Lucy, Sei, and Lua were here to keep you out of trouble. They kept you from leaving the apartment. They kept you from using the phone. They kept you from going on V-Live. They used the band credit card to order food when you got the munchies. You really owe them all a huge favor. And you also owe Rina and Elly for cleaning up the common room last night — apparently you’re a really messy eater when you’re stoned.” Suyeon buries her face in her hands. She looks like the heroine from a drama, and if it was anyone but Suyeon doing this, I’d think they were putting on an act. “I’m so embarrassed,” she says. “I should really resign as leader. . .” I have to laugh at this train of thought
