SEI: I wake up before my alarm and immediately jump out of bed. Today’s the day we go to the Olympics! I head out to the kitchen and grab some rice and an orange for breakfast. As I’m sitting there eating, the others begin trickling in. Even Suyeon gets up before her alarm, which I think is a first. She stops to give me a kiss on the cheek as she goes to get herself some breakfast. I glance up and see Lucy looking right at me. I can’t read the expression on her face. She doesn’t say anything, though, so I go back to my breakfast. We all get dressed and ready to go, and we’re standing in front of the building waiting when Manager-nim pulls up with the van. She gets out and opened the side door, rushing us into the van. “Now remember,” she says as we’re getting settled in, “this is a treat, but it’s also a public appearance. Best behavior at all times. Willing to sign autographs or pose for selfies with any fans who approach you. You know the drill.” She gets back in the van, sitting up front with the driver. In our seats in the back of the van, we look at each other and roll our eyes over Manager-nim’s list of instructions. We’ve been through so much media and comportment training that by now we’re pretty much physically incapable of acting inappropriately in any situation. “Just let her go on,” Suyeon says. “It makes her feel better — as if she actually has control of the situation, instead of having to trust that this bunch of beagles does the right thing.” We all laugh at this, and settle in for the two-hour ride to the arena. After a while, Doyeon says “I wish they could have gotten us tickets to women’s hockey.” “Get real,” Elly says. “As far as management knows, we’re all straight and would love nothing better than to see a bunch of big strong Korean lads fighting it out on the ice for national honor.” Again we all laugh, and then everyone splits up into their pairs for conversations. Suyeon and I are sitting in the back corner of the van, and I tell her about my visit from Lucy the night before. “She was full of questions about polyamory,” I say. “She said she’d gotten it from a zine that she was reading.” Apparently Suyeon knows something about this, because her face just freezes in place and she looks out the window for a moment, then looked back at me. “You want to know what she’s really been reading?” she asked, her face serious. “She’s been reading whatever I wrote when I was stoned. . .” She tells me about Lucy cornering her with questions about polyamory when she and Suyeon were the only ones in the apartment, and how Lucy had hinted that these questions were based on Suyeon’s stoned scribblings. “So apparently,” she concluded, “when I get stoned I write about polyamory — and I try to explain it using Twilight?” She buries her face in her hands, mortified. “Twilight actually worked for explaining polyamory, as least, as filtered through Lucy’s brain it did,” I say, trying to reassure her. “It could be worse: You could be using Fifty Shades of Grey to explain .” She looks up at me and says “But Fifty Shades of Grey is great for teaching !” My jaw drops, and my disgust with this idea must have been written on my face, because Suyeon says “Christian Grey is a perfect example of what not to do!” Okay, I was totally not expecting that. I start laughing so hard I’m crying. When I stop to catch my breath, I overhear Lucy talking to Yoojung. I catch Suyeon’s eyes and jerk my head towards them so she’s listen too. “Yoojung, I’ve been doing some reading,” Lucy says, “and I know you’ve read a lot more than I have about this—” Suyeon and I raise our eyebrows at each other. Lucy is good — she knows that if you want to get Yoojung to talking about something, all you’ve got to do is appeal to her intellectual vanity— “so I’ve got a question for you: Is monogamy automatically a feminist value?” Yoojung doesn’t even stop to think — it’s like she’s kept a monologue in reserve for just such an occasion. “Hell no!” she says. “It’s a leftover from cave
