feeling left out

just a rumor | seventeen

the semester's finals had ended the week before, and the students that attended university could never be more relieved and relaxed that the tests were over and done. now kai, jisu, mina, yuna, and taehee were all sitting around in the living room of kai and jisu's shared dorm. "hell week is finally over!" they all cheered, some dancing around crazily and the rest sitting down and laughing. kai sighed happily. "now i don't need to study too hard." "and i don't need to send you guys more notes than usual," yuna added. "really?" jisu said, throwing her arms up in the air in disbelief. "no one's gonna thank me for sharing my chocolates? i was trying to make you guys smarter for the damn exams!" the other four girls thanked her as she muttered under her breath, "you're damn right you're grateful for me." lazily, they started conversations, which went from talking about their professors, to whose jokes were the best. "it's obviously me," argued kai. "i'm freaking hilarious." "you?" taehee looked at the taller girl in disbelief. "i've been class clown ever since class clowns were even invented! maybe even before then!" mina interjected, "class clowns were 'invented'"—she emphasized the word 'invented' and used hand motions as she did—"before you were even born. haven't you seen those comedy movies?" "that's not the point!" the two screeched in unison. kai turned to jisu and yuna and asked them, "who do you think is funnier, me or this midget?" and without hesitation, yuna replied, "kai, probably. i like her puns. taehee's more of a cheesy pick-up line person." the older cheered happily and sent the youngest a smug smile as she proudly announced, "i am the queen of puns!" taehee pouted at yuna. "i thought you were my friend!" she exclaimed, faking a sob as the other girl rolled her eyes at her actions. "well, i think," jisu started in attempt to get taehee's hopes up before crushing it into pieces, "that i am the most hilarious person in this room." "are not!" argued kai. "are too!" jisu shot back. the two of the eldest in their little girl group continued to childishly fight while the other three sat and watched, cheering for one of them to win. the fight died down once kai noticed that yuna tried getting a few pieces of her candies. "hey!" she slapped the candies out of the younger's hands and wagged a finger in front of her face jokingly. "no touching my food." then yuna looked at her with a stone cold expression and used her most serious voice. "i can make you s'mores and ice cream cookie sandwiches," she bargained, holding out her hand. kai took the other's hand and shook it, agreeing to the deal. after a while, giddy smiles and grins replaced their serious expressions and they burst out into laughs and giggled, rolling on the floor. soon the others joined in just because, and what anyone would see if they stepped into the room was a bunch of friends laughing over nothing. taehee pretended to wipe a tear from her eye. "that has to be the most serious agreement i've seen." "you better make those sweets for me or else," kai warned yuna, half joking. yuna saluted and grinned at her. "yes, ma'am!" they laughed again until it died down into soft chuckles and small grins. taehee sighed, "we haven't been this happy ever since the semester started, and the rumors started spreading." "yeah." mina nodded, agreeing with her. "speaking of drama, i'm still partially confused to this day" "same" "no, it's cause like, 95' say that everything is all good, and that there's nothing going on. then suddenly seungcheol tweets about lies, and how not everything you hear is true. i don't know about you, but it's ing scary" "didn't jisoo tell you that they're all fine?" taehee asked kai, but she seemed equally confused. "yeah, i did, then he went to the kitchen with seungcheol and jeonghan. weird" "maybe we should just let it slide? i don't know, but i think its better that we stay out of this..." yuna trailed, but jisu was quick to disagree. "we're already involved in this, we can't just 'let it slide', and besides, we know that those three can't solve between themselves without help." "still, it's their business, not ours" "at least the spotlight's not on us anymore." jisu tilted her head to the side in confusion. "so you're okay with the drama not happening to you but to your friends? that's some messed up ." mina immediately shook her head. "that's not what i meant. what i meant was that the k.b. person hasn't been posting anything about our group. he's been posting about other people recently, like that new girl and one of the other popular kids." "oh, i heard about them!" taehee exclaimed. "i heard that the popular kid was new last year. people are saying that she's bi." kai shook her head at her. "you can't believe everything you hear, you know." the youngest frowned. "i didn't say that i believed it." "anyways," mina said loudly, a bit annoyed that someone had changed the topic easily. "i guess that k.b. dude couldn't find anything too interesting about us anymore for his readers." jisu raised her eyebrow at her. "how do you even know this?" mina rolled her eyes at the question. "i check it just to see if he wants to spill tea about us any time soon." "oh." yuna then attempted to lift their spirits up a bit or to at least change the topic they all seemed to get uncomfortable with. "so what are you guys dressing up as for halloween?" "you're still going on about that?" asked taehee. "hey, i stopped when i was 7 years old, and i just got back at it a few years ago," she tried to reason with them. "i need to make up for the years i lost sitting in a bedroom instead of trick-or-treating." "if we really are pulling through with this," kai started, a smirk making its way to her face. "then i vote that jisu and mina go couple costume." the youngest two of the group raised their hands with wide grins on their faces as they played along with their friend's act. "i second the vote," they said together jokingly while jisu and mina groaned and threw couch pillows on them. *** "i just don't know what's going on!" chan exclaimed, falling to his bed in exhaustion. "i wanna be in college, so i don't have to sit in high school not knowing what's happening with my friends." "are you sure you wanna go to college, chan?" mark questioned his friend. "it's pretty ing stressful there." "well, i know but, i'm the only one in my friend group who's still in high school. i miss so much it's so annoying, like there's drama going on, and i know nothing," chan complained to his friend. "well, at least you don't have to babysit anyone younger than you," mark pointed out, and that's when chan realizes how much worse mark probably has it. "okay, that's true. but apparently, mingyu and mina dated, and the '95 line has this weird love triangle. you know, there's a rumor out there that minghao and junhui broke up and guess what?" "what?" his friend asks, rolling his eyes at him. "i have no ing clue what the hell is really happening." "dude, at least you aren't 20 ing people and are too much y'all need to hang out in small groups." this time, mark complains. his phone suddenly rings, only to find 200 more messages in his group chat. "and at least you don't have a hundred messages every time you open your damn phone cause the gc has almost 25 people in it." "okay, but let's be real here, big groups in general," chan points out from his sprawled position on his bed. mark agrees and sits down on the messy bed, eyeing the every inch of the bedroom they were sitting in. "it's been a long time since i've been here," he comments. "i know," chan said nodding. "the last time was 8th grade, and that was because you were running away from taeyeong." mark and chan lightly laugh at the memory. the two spent their friday night talking gossip, and playing video games till 2am. in those hours, they remembered how it felt to have no worries even if it was just for a little while.
