Heartstring

My tutor Jinhwan

“I DID IT!”

Jinhwan had packed his stuff and was ready to go home after a tiring day with school, when suddenly he heard a loud shout, followed by a door slid opened. Every head in the classroom turned to the panting guy, who seemed to have had ran a mile, with a paper in his hand. Jinhwan was quick to register the guy. Hanbin.

“I DID IT!” he repeated again, but when he noticed all the heads were focused on him, he shut up, and shifted to a cool guy and leaned against the doorframe. Jinhwan surprised how happy Hanbin was, and couldn’t help to laugh when he tried to hide his happiness and play it cool. When the others had left, Hanbin ran up to Jinhwan and showed him the paper that remarked his score and grade. Jinhwan took the paper in his hand and analysed it. Jinhwan’s eyes widened as he saw the test result.

“Congrats on getting a B+ Hanbin-ah! I’m so proud of you!” Jinhwan smiled from ear to ear, as he, by pulse, hugged the taller and then let go as he looked through the paper again, to make sure he had seen right. Finally the hard work has paid off.

The hug might not have done Jinhwan any harm, but Hanbin on the other hand was all startled, after all it was their first hug ever. Hanbin hadn’t thought they would hug actually, but he liked it. Hanbin looked at Jinhwan who couldn’t stop smiling, infecting Hanbin as well, as he couldn’t stop smile.

“Thank you, but I couldn’t have done it without you!” Hanbin said shyly looking down, as he hid the blush that crept upon his cheeks. “And therefor we should celebrate! As a way to thank you,” Hanbin added getting awfully shy, more to his liking. Jinhwan looked at him, smiling. “Jinani, I’ll take you to the new amusement park that just opened in town!” he exclaimed in excitement. A bit surprised Hanbin wanted to take him out, Jinhwan couldn’t help but have a huge grin across his face, the tiredness long forgotten.

The amusement park was like any amusement parks should be: full of fun laugher, crazy carousels and a lot of food to get wherever you are in the park. And this is exactly what Jinhwan saw when they arrived the parks gates. It had been a long time since last Jinhwan was here. In fact, he hadn’t been here since his fathers’ death. Jinhwan was just like a little kid again: exited to go to the park and take as many rides as possible before getting nauseous of all the roller coasters. But Jinhwan was surprised that the person who was even more excited than him, was the stone cold B.I, who really was a nice guy Hanbin. Hanbin stood jumping up and down in the line, as he was more than excited to enter. Once they had entered, the smell of cotton candy, popcorn and various of food crossed their noses, the sound of people screaming in either fear or enjoyment in the roller coasters, and the laughter that proved the people’s joy, made both of them even more excited. They looked at each other with huge grins before they began looking at random roller coasters and attractions to take. They ended up taking almost anything that was here. From the tall roller coaster that went too fast down for Hanbin’s liking, while Jinhwan enjoyed it, to the teacups that span too much for Jinhwan, while Hanbin couldn’t do anything but laugh, to the bumper cars where Hanbin almost made Jinhwan fall out from his car, to the drop tower where both their bowels were long up in their throats. Everything had been so fun and they have had a really good laughter. They took a break as Hanbin bought cotton candy and Jinhwan bought popcorn. Thinking again, if they were to take more attractions, it was maybe not the best idea to eat more, but who cares? They had fun!

Jinhwan leaned against the bench and watched the attractions, smiling. Then his eyes fell on the boy next to him, Hanbin, who ate from his cotton candy. Jinhwan couldn’t help but smile while looking at him. He was just like a five years old kid. Jinhwan had for a long time wondered why he liked everything about Hanbin. How every little thing Hanbin did, whether it was bad or good, Jinhwan still liked it, as long as it was him. He hadn’t felt like this with anyone else. Jinhwan was really happy he got to become Hanbin’s tutor, in order to learn more about him. Jinhwan noticed how Hanbin had gotten a little cotton candy in the corner of his lips. Jinhwan watched as Hanbin it away, and his eyes fell on his lips. His lips were round and big, and Jinhwan had for a long time wondered how it would feel like to touch them, what they would taste like, and how they would match with his own. Jinhwan shook his head by his thoughts and as he noticed he was staring. Back to reality, Jinhwan, he reminded himself.

Hanbin noticed Jinhwan’s stare and looked at him. “Are you tired?” he asked looking at him. Jinhwan was fast to shake his head as a ‘no’

“No no! I have so much fun,” Jinhwan exclaimed excited, making Hanbin chuckle. Hanbin then offered Jinhwan a bite from his cotton candy. It should be a casual thing but for Jinhwan it was a very thrilling happening. He carefully took a bite, not wanting to look greedy, or puny. Hanbin couldn’t help but smile at how cute Jinhwan was. He was obviously nervous, and Hanbin had to admit, Jinhwan wasn’t the only nervous one. Hanbin didn’t know why he wanted to share his food with Jinhwan, or why he even wanted to take him to an amusement park at all for a celebration. He hadn’t been taking his friends with him for a celebration, and Jinhwan wasn’t technically a friend, or? Still, Hanbin felt the urge to be with Jinhwan, outside from school and tutor lessons. He had this urge to know more about Jinhwan and about his life. Honesty the feeling annoyed Hanbin, cause he had never experienced it before. It was a mixture of a good and frustration feeling. Good because he liked being with Jinhwan, but a frustrated feeling because he wanted to know more about him, be more with him, without being to clingy. Why the hell would he of all feel like this, and with him of all?

“Should we head for another one?” Jinhwan asked looking for another attraction to take. Hanbin looked around as well, until he found the perfect one. This was perfect to make them walk closer together, and maybe Jinhwan could even hold around his arm, who knows? The question is rather: why would Hanbin want Jinhwan to cling onto him? “We shall take that one,” Hanbin said as he pointed at the next attraction. Jinhwan followed where Hanbin was pointing, and when his eyes landed on the same attraction s Hanbin was referring to, cold shivers ran down his spine. Jinhwan had always hated them and had always avoided them. However, he couldn’t say no to Hanbin, so the only thing he could was to nod. With that they headed towards the haunted house.

Upon arriving the haunted house, Hanbin was more than scared and regretted his decision in the minute the darkness endured him and the doors behind them close and locket. Who would’ve thought that B.I, the strongest in school, the leader of his gang, the guy who weren’t afraid of punching someone – or getting punched – until the face weren’t recognisable, would stand there almost peeing himself. Hanbin would classify himself as a not easily scared guy, yet the darkness and the scary music that filled his ears didn’t make him comfortable at all. Hanbin had a considered retreat while he still had the chance, but as soon as Hanbin felt the smaller holding tight around his arms, in fear, his heart skipped a beat and the fear that played with his mind subsided. Hanbin was glad all the could see was darkness at first, because he’s cheeks were covered by a dark shade of red and a smile plastered on his face making his cheek apples lift up. Suddenly a dim green light went on, and they were able to see a little.

They were in a group of around 15 people at the same time in the haunted house. They walked around with a guide, dressed all in black and had only a staff with him. He followed them through weird halls, where it hung awful, scary pictures. The staff talked about an old myth that scared the out of most of the people there. Hanbin, who still had the smaller around his arm, looked around, and felt like the pictures somehow came closer to him. He felt a bit startled when one of the pictures originally looked to the right, suddenly shifted gaze and looked right into Hanbin’s soul. Suddenly a gunshot was fired and the guide fell down on the ground, making the people scream. Hanbin was pale as if he had seen a ghost, but the only thing on his mind was Jinhwan. How was he after what just happened?  Before Hanbin could even open his mouth, the dim light went of and they were covered in darkness. Suddenly there was a led light saying, “You’re on your own now,” in front of them. Some panicked and screamed, while other understood what happened.  Hanbin was one of them to realised at that moment it was a part of the haunted house arrangements. Hanbin could feel Jinhwan’s tense body and took his tiny hand and squeezed it. He leaned closer to him, hoping it was his ear he was close to, as he couldn’t see anything in the dark, and then whispered “It’s okay Jinani, it’s a part of the haunted house, let’s just keep going.” Hanbin could feel Jinhwan’s body calmed but still was a bit tensed.

After the group had calmed down and as the doors were locked, and their only way out was to walk through the haunted house, the group decided to continue, Hanbin still holding Jinhwan’s hand.

Walking further in, they walked through a lot of halls. Some were halls with walls that had different texture: for example one wall had arm sticking out, while another one was covered in fur. Feeling the walls, their heart were all up in their throats in fear. In another hall, there were windows. Jinhwan who had clamed down a bit looked through the windows. The first one was black and empty, so was the second one as well. Through the third, it was a dim light, but Jinhwan couldn’t make sense of it and continued. When he looked through the forth one, a panic rushed through him as he screamed on top of his lungs. In the fourth there was suddenly a person, dressed in scary masks and makeup, popped up from nowhere and scared the hell out of them. Jinhwan were on the verge to cry as his poor heart couldn’t contain it. Hearing Jinhwan’s scream, Hanbin puled him closer and didn’t let him go.

They kept walking through scary halls and suddenly came to a room, which there were a mix of white and red dim lights, making them see everything in the room, yet it was scary. A sudden coldness ran through their body as they saw the room they had entered: a slaughterhouse. Chills ran down Hanbin’s spine as he saw there hung dead pigs, ducks and, surprisingly enough, human bodies in the room. By a table stood a butcher with a chainsaw, they had thought the butcher was a statue. If they weren’t too busy being distracted by the horrible smell, they would’ve noticed that the butcher made tiny, tiny movements, like the twitching with his eyes, or the with the fingers. Suddenly the statue ran towards them while the chainsaw was spinning, making their hearts go all the way up to their throats and they screamed like it was their last day. Hanbin had grabbed what he thought was Jinhwan’s hand and they ran for his life.

Arriving the next room, which was less scary, almost like a resting room, Hanbin had the change to think clear with his head. Now he had time to realise that in fact the hand he had taken, did not belong to Jinhwan, but a tall boy he couldn’t care less about. Hanbin let go of the guys’ hand quickly, and looked around in the room, realising that only half of the group was gone, but more importantly: Jinhwan was gone. Hanbin looked desperately around for the smaller. Hanbin felt his heartbeat increase drastically as he got more and more frustrated. He began to pat himself on the left chest side, as he did when he was nervous. Had he just lost Jinhwan? What if he was sitting in a corner, crying for himself? Seeing how he almost began to cry with the butcher, Hanbin couldn’t imagine how it would feel for him now.

When the butcher had began to run after them, Jinhwan felt panic rush through his body and his first thought was to get out there. He ran and ran and ran without thinking where he ran. When he heard the chainsaw behind him, he ran even faster and his heartbeat increased. Was he going to die?  Wasn’t it only a haunted house? Apparently Jinhwan had ran the wrong way as he came out of the slaughterhouse and came to the halls again. Jinhwan looked behind him and noticed the butcher weren’t after him anymore. Jinhwan didn’t know what to do. His heart were beating so fast, he had hard time breathing. He looked around, trying to adduce to the darkness. As he couldn’t see anything and didn’t know where he came from, Jinhwan sank down to the floor. Was he going to be stuck here for eternity? Where were Hanbin in all of this? Who knew what kind of scary things would come out here. Jinhwan closed his eyes. The only thing he wanted now was Hanbin to embrace him and tell him everything was fine. “Hanbin-ah” Jinhwan softly whispered, as he didn’t dare to talk louder.

“Have you seen the tiny boy?” Hanbin asked as he held a frim grip around the boy who he had just held hand with. He only shook his head in fright. Hanbin groaned and let go of him. He looked at the other half of the group that came to the room they were in, yet he didn’t spot Jinhwan. He ran towards a woman, asking: “Have you seen the boy with the heart shaped mole?” but only a shake were to receive. He felt his voice rise for each person he asked, until he shouted his lungs out. “Jinhwan! Jinhwan answer me!” The other looked at him as if he was a madman. Hanbin had only one thing to do: go back inside. Hanbin ran as fast as his feet could bare him and the darkness began to endure him. Hanbin shouted Jinhwan’s names several times before he heard a soft sound of a sob. Hanbin’s eyes that had gotten used to the darkness, noticed a small figure curled up to the wall. “Jinhwan?” he shouted whispered.

Jinhwan’s head shot up at his name, and looked around, until he noticed a person in the darkness. “H-Hanbin-ah?” he whispered as he stood slowly up, scared it might not be him.

“Jinhwan!” Hanbin shouted, as he understood he was right, and the relief rushed through him, making his heartbeat decrease back to normal. He had found Jinhwan.

In the minute Hanbin had called his name, he ran up towards him and hugged him like they hadn’t seen each other for years. Jinhwan had never felt more relieved, and the best part was that Hanbin was with him. Hanbin was shocked at the smallers embrace but were quick to hug him back. “I thought I lost you,” Hanbin whispered as he felt his t-shirt getting strained by Jinhwan’s tears. “I wont ever let go again.” Hanbin held him tight, and swore that he wouldn’t let Jinhwan get this scared again, a promise he couldn’t keep.

When they got back to the ‘resting room’, hand in hand, they saw the rest of the group turn their heads up towards them and they began to cheer in happiness. “Thank god you came back!” A woman said happy. They all had been worried fro them? Hanbin smiled looking down at Jinhwan. “Let’s beat this haunted house,” he said, taking Jinhwan’s hand, making him smile and nod.

“You’re such a cry baby,” Hanbin teased Jinhwan as they just had gotten out of the haunted house, with Jinhwan still clutched to Hanbin’s arm.

“Yah Hanbin-ah!” Hanbin had gotten used to Jinhwan call him Hanbin and adding a ‘ah’ to the end, but each time he did so, Hanbin felt a sudden warmth to his heart. “Who were the one to almost cry?” Jinhwan fired back, trying to save his reputation, however Jinhwan knew he would lose.

“Well, you were the one to cry,” Hanbin chuckled as he looked at Jinhwan, regretting it in the minute, after all Jinhwan had begun to cry, and Hanbin felt guilty for not protecting him. Jinhwan felt his cheeks burn in embarrassment. He looked away, avoiding Hanbin who was laughing at him. “The jump scares were pretty scary! A-and the butcher who came out of nowhere, h-he was terrifying! And when I got lost...” Jinhwan trailed off, looking down, as he recalled the scary event at the haunted house.

“Jinhwan, I’m so sorry, please don’t be mad,” Hanbin stared as he looked at the smaller boy, who wouldn’t pay attention to him anymore, not knowing that he only spaced out and didn’t intend to ignore him. He sighed in defeat. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to take you there, if I knew I were going to lose you and getting you this frightened, I wouldn’t have taken you there,” Hanbin apologised, however Jinhwan didn’t look at him. Jinhwan was too embarrassed over how clingy he had been when he was terrified, and the fact that he had cried in front of him. Oh dear god how pathetic he was. Hanbin sighed again as there were no reaction.

He searched the park, and suddenly a brilliant idea hit him in the head. “Jinhwan wait here a second,” he said. Jinhwan snuck a glance at Hanbin who stood up and left without further explanation. Jinhwan felt disappointed with himself for being too stubborn. He though Hanbin understood he wasn’t being serious, that he was only joking. Jinhwan now felt bad and wanted to go after him, apologising, but Hanbin was already far away and Jinhwan had lost the sight of him. Jinhwan took this as an opportunity to find a great way to apologise. Then a thought crossed his mind: was Hanbin angry and would he punish him? Like he would for some weeks ago, when Jinhwan wasn’t his tutor? Does Hanbin still see him as a victim? Is Hanbin still a bad person? Thoughts like these surrounded his head, as he didn’t notice the figure beside him.

“Jinan,” Jinhwan was startled by his own name, more importantly the nickname, and jumped in his seat. He looked up at a smiling Hanbin who had two chocolate figures on a stick, shaped as two people holding hand, in his hands. Jinhwan cheeks turned a dark shade of red as he realised Hanbin had given him a nickname. The only person who had done that was Donghyuk, his mother and his sister. No one else. Ever. Jinhwan liked it, to have a nickname, but it was something special when Hanbin called him by that nickname, and Jinhwan wanted to treasure the sound of Hanbin saying it.

Hanbin pointed one of the chocolate figures on a stick at Jinhwan. When Jinhwan saw Hanbin like this, handing him chocolate figures on a stick, smiling like a five years old boy, to be exact: smiling to him, the thoughts he had previous were washed away.  Jinhwan took the chocolate and smiled at Hanbin. Now Jinhwan felt guilty for Hanbin buying him chocolate.

“Hanbin-ah! I’ll pay you back,” Jinhwan said as he made space for Hanbin to sit next to him. When Hanbin sat down, he seemed to be closer than usual. Normally when peoples at close to him, he would feel uncomfortable, but Hanbin’s presence had this calmness to it.

“Nah, this one is on me, beside its only chocolate,” Hanbin winked at him. Jinhwan’s cheeks fluttered red and he looked away. Why was Hanbin like this? Did he know he made Jinhwan like this?

Pouting, Jinhwan took a bite from his chocolate, and enjoyed the melting chocolate on his tongue. Hanbin chuckled as he lightly, making Jinhwan look at him in confuse. “What’s the matter?” Jinhwan asked trying to read the other guys face, to no help.

Hanbin brushed away the chocolate that was smeared in the corner of Jinhwan’s lips.  “Just some chocolate,” he simply replied. Jinhwan’s cheeks turned a deep shade of red as he realised Hanbin’s action. His heart skipped a beat as they sat on the bench, face to face. Hanbin’s hand still rested on Jinhwan’s warm cheek. Hanbin’s heartbeat rose at the thought of that he wasn’t the only who was nervous. Did perhaps Jinhwan feel anything for him? Wait; does Hanbin feel anything for Jinhwan? Hanbin has always liked girl, and he have slept around with many girls, however never felt a real connection honestly. Not at least as real as this feeling he had in his whole body right now, sitting here with Jinhwan, whereas they both leans in. Hanbin isn’t stupid; he knows that this will lead to a kiss, yet Hanbin couldn’t pull away. Was it because Jinhwan was such a cute boy? Or maybe his heart shaped mole that Hanbin had always loved? Or his small lips that fit his face perfectly? Or maybe his cute, round nose? Or perhaps it’s just how Jinhwan in general is perfect? Hanbin didn’t know, yet he didn’t actually want to retreat now. He wanted to see if he felt something for the smaller boy. The boy who would always make Hanbin’s heart goes crazy.

Both leaned slowly in, not daring to take their eyes of each other, trying to read what the other might feel or think. Both heart rose at each other’s tempo. Jinhwan could swear that his hear beat so fast and loud that Hanbin could’ve heard it. Hanbin caressed Jinhwan’s cheek, as they were only a few centimetres apart.

“Jinhwan,” Hanbin slowly whispered as Jinhwan slowly closed his eyes, afraid that Hanbin would have a bad reaction to the kiss, and therefor didn’t dare to look, besides, he wanted to feel it, rather than see it.

Jinhwan could feel Hanbin’s lips touch his in a millisecond before a sudden buzz sound made them both jump away from each other. They looked at each other, panting, sweating and trying hard to catch their breath, as if they had ran a whole mile. They both looked down at Hanbin’s pocket, as the sound came from there. Hanbin signalled that he had to get take that, and went off. Jinhwan was left with a heart that was beating like crazy and a confused mind. Where they just about to kiss? Had Hanbin led him into almost a kiss? Jinhwan lightly his lips. They had almost kissed. Jinhwan’s heartbeat rose even faster at the thought and his cheeks were more than hot. Jinhwan tried to fan himself with his hand as Hanbin came back, with a stern look on his face.

“Jinhwan, I-I’m really sorry but I have to go,” he said, trying to sound strong but his voice failed. All Hanbin wanted, was to be with Jinhwan, but he had to go. Jinhwan smiled and nodded.

“It’s getting late, and I have to study anyways, but thank you for today,” Jinhwan said as he waved Hanbin off, hiding the disappointment. They parted way at the same gate they had arrived with. Both walked their way, with mixed feeling and a common though: what had just happened? And what would happen if they further on?
