A dinner and a promise

My tutor Jinhwan

Never in his life had Yunhyeong ever though he was going to do this. He put the massive mask onto the bench beside him and rested his elbow on it. He had heard that being a mascot was a bit warm, but never ever had he imagined he would sweat places he didn’t know he could sweat. Walk around in the festival grounds, giving candies to kids, dance with them in a huge costume and taking pictures with people does really make you warm. He didn’t even sweat this much on basketball trainings. Catching up his breath he looked at Donghyuk and couldn’t help but smile. Donghyuk hadn’t taken one single break from when they started, which was about two hours ago, and yet this was Yunhyeong’s third or fourth break. How on earth did he manage to make it out alive? How did he even agree to this? Oh yeah, because of him.

“Yunhyeong! That’s mine!” Donghyuk pouted as Yunhyeong had just stolen his rubber. They were currently in the library, studying as Donghyuk had finally said yes to at least study with him. Donghyuk grabbed the rubber and continued into his studying.

“Oh c’mon, you’re no fun,” Yunhyeong pouted back. He crossed his arms on the desk and rested his head on them. He looked carefully up at Donghyuk who was fully concentrated on the studying. How can one be this into studying? I think the only one who is worse is Jinhwan, at least that’s the impression he got from B.I.

“I am fun, but school’s important, and you know that,” Dong said as he drew two lines under a math answer.

Yunhyeong sighed a loud, clear and sarcastic sigh, making Donghyuk chuckle a bit, causing Yunhyeong to smile as well. Yunhyeong studied Donghyuk’s eyes, which was definitely not paying attention to him. He has really small eyes, and they are really cute. He liked them, but they should only pay attention to him. “Dong, do you do anything fun, besides studying?” Yunhyeong chuckled, earning a sarcastic glare from Donghyuk.

“As a matter of fact, I do, indeed,” Donghyuk said, as he sat up straight, head up high, showing how proud he was, while Yunhyeong tried to hold in his laughter. “This weekend I will be participating in a charity event,” Donghyuk said looking at Yunhyeong who looked at him with amazed eyes.

"Charity work? In the new festival event that will take place in Seoul Plaza and the streets?” Yunhyeong asked as he was amazed by Donghyuk’s work. He surly has a pure heart.

The younger nodded with a smile, as suddenly an idea hit him and words flew out: “Yunhyeong-ah, why don’t you join me?” Yunhyeong looked at him confused for a second, before grinning.

“You want me to join you as an date?” he grinned, while Donghyuk rolled his eyes.

“You can call it a date if you want to,” Donghyuk said before smiling to himself. Yunhyeong would actually join him, and it made him more than exited, but scared as well. What if he thought it was boring? Well they would be occupied for a long time.

Yunhyeong smiled at the earlier incidence, as he realised when they arrived there that he hadn’t meant to join him to the event as a date, but as a part of the event, as warm, sweating and stinking mascot. Yet, he couldn’t complain, rather he liked it. He got to spend time with Donghyuk on another place and learn more about him. Donghyuk in the mascot waved at Yunhyeong and Yunhyeong got up on his feet. He sighed before taking on the mask and becoming a blue cow with green dots around him. He walked over to Donghyuk who was surrounded by kids by this time. He approached Donghyuk and if it wasn’t for the mask, they would’ve been nose-to-nose, and whispered; “This is cute, but next time I’ll take you somewhere special where it’s the only two of us.” Although he couldn’t see Donghyuk, he knew he was blushing like mad, and that made Donghyuk satisfied as he walked away and gave candies to kids.

After some other 30 minutes walking around and giving candies, Yunhyeong, again, began feeling tired in his feet and honestly wanted to sit down and rest, but seeing Donghyuk still keep going, he felt like was losing he walked up to Donghyuk and kept going on, even though he felt like dying.

Donghyuk noticed how tired Yunhyeong was and felt bad for him. He was about to ask him to take a rest as suddenly a kid approached him. It was one of the most adorable little girls he had seen, with two ponytails at each side and a cute little dress. “Oppa, take picture,” she said as she hugged Donghyuk’s mascot. Donghyuk bent down so he was on her level and made gestures to her, making her laugh. Yunhyeong turned around noticing the girl laugh. At first he smiled seeing Donghyuk act silly in front of the girl, but as soon as he saw whom the girl was, his smile died, and his eyes widened. Hanbyul?

As if the girl had read her mind, she turned towards Yunhyeong as well, smiling brightly. She waved him closer, wanting to take a picture with both the mascots. Yunhyeong walked over and squatted to her level. All he could wish for now was that he was not here.

“Shall I take a picture?” he heard a familiar voice ask. Too familiar, but he couldn’t put his finger on who it was. Yunhyeong looked up at the person who was with the girl, and surprise hit him as he saw Jinhwan with a camera. Wait was Jinhwan here with Hanbyul? Does that mean…

“Hanbin-ah! Come here! Look, Hanbyul want’s to take a picture with the blue cow and the princess,” he heard Jinhwan say enthusiastically, as if he was a mother, making Yunhyeong almost chuckle. He could see Hanbin approach them with a few bags in his hands and food in between his fingers. They must’ve enjoyed it, probably more than him. Wait what if Hanbin sees him like this? Hanbin would probably never let this go. , Yunhyeong had to stay in a low profile, when he suddenly realised, he is wearing a mask and a huge costume. No way in the world they would find out it was him, so he didn’t have to worry at all, cause it’s not like they’re going to be exposed to them. Well that was until…

“Hyung!” Donghyuk suddenly shouted as he stood up dragging of his mask, making Hanbyul scream in fright as she thought it was a living doll. As she screamed, she ran into Jinhwan’s arms, and he lifted her up. Donghyuk felt bad for scaring a child away, but surprise hit him too hard. Seeing Jinhwan with him.

When Jinhwan held Hanbyul, with support from his hip, he looked at the crazy person in the mascot. His jaw immediately dropped when he saw his best friend, sweaty and shocked. “D-Donghyuk!” Jinhwan felt sweat running down his spine as last time they had talked, Donghyuk made it clear that he didn’t want Jinhwan to be with Hanbin, and now he was with Hanbin and his sister on an event. Jinhwan gulped as he looked at Hanbin who was also really surprised to see Donghyuk.

“H-hi Donghyuk,” Jinhwan tried to break the surprised and awkward atmosphere, “who are you with?” he continued as he looked at the other mascot. Yunhyeong closed his eyes tight as he wished that Donghyuk wouldn’t expose him.

“Yunheyong,” Donghyuk said as he pulled of Yunhyeong’s mask, resulting in Yunhyeong and Hanbin have a moment with staring, before Hanbin burst out laughing.

“Yunhyeong, what are you doing?” Hanbin asked, earning an elbow in the rib by Jinhwan.

“Hanbin!” Jinhwan said as he glared at him. Hanbin scratched his head with his free finger, mumbling a ‘sorry’. “So you guys are the mascots? How fun!” Jinhwan said as he looked from Donghyuk to Yunhyeong, smiling while Hanbyul rested against his chest, most likely betrayed by the mascot who turned out to be a man.

"Yeah he made me tag along, but next time I’m the one to chose,” he winked, making Donghyuk turn red and Jinhwan laugh. Hanbin was only surprised as he had a small clue of what was going on. Hanbin shook his head backwards, hinting to Yunhyeong that he should come with him, while dropping the bags. Yunhyeong looked at Donghyuk before he rolled his eyes sighing, “here we go.” Donghyuk couldn’t help but chuckle, and as Yunhyeong passed Jinhwan, Jinhwan walked up to Donghyuk.

“I’ surprised you got him with you,” Jinhwan said looking at a smiling Donghyuk.

"Well I was surprised to see you with B.I,” Donghyuk said look at Hanbyul, as he bent down a little and smiled at her.

“Yeah we kind of came to an agreement,” Jinhwan said as he remembered the long night walk, just the two of them, and how they both had confessed.

Donghyuk raised an eyebrow at Jinhwan’s statement. “Came to an agreement?” he said cheesy as stepped a bit closer to Jinhwan, knowing he would be uncomfortable. And as said as done, Jinhwan looked away from Donghyuk and tried to avoid him, but as Donghyuk wouldn’t stop, Jinhwan finally gave in and sighed.

“We… eh kind of ended up…. k-kissing a-and confessing to each other,” Jinhwan said as cheeks were burnt up by embarrassment.

"Oh my god! Jinhwan! Really?” he said excited, almost squealing. Jinhwan smile widen as he nodded. He was more than happy that Donghyuk was happy for him. “Who confessed first?” Donghyuk asked with a wide smile as his white teeth shone through.

“Actually it was Hanbin, but we somehow ended up confessing in the same confession,” Jinhwan laughed as it sounded pretty stupid. Donghyuk smiled at his best friend, who seemed to more than happy. Suddenly guilt showered over him, and his smile faded. Donghyuk had been really against Hanbin, and not a good reason. Jinhwan noticed his best friends sudden change of expression and the laughter died down. “Are you okay Dongie?”

Donghyuk look at Jinhwan, and saw the smallers worried face, then he shook his head fast and smiled. “No there’s nothing to worry about at all! Ah and who is this?” he said as he paid all his attention to Hanbyul who hid her face and Jinhwan began laughing at her silliness. Donghyuk smiled, as he couldn’t be happier. If his best friend was happy so was he.

Hanbin leaned into a lamppost and crossed his arms, smirking at Yunhyeong. “So it’s Donghyung?”

“Donghyuk,” Yunhyeong corrected him. Damn. Hanbin knew it was something with Dong. Yunhyeong chuckled, knowing Hanbin cursed to himself. “Yeah it’s him. Or well, I have confessed but he hasn’t yet,” Yunhyeong continued.

Hanbin looked at him surprised then, a smirk crept upon his face. “Oh I see! It’s a one sided love,” Hanbin began to laugh, earning a punch in the arm from Yunhyeong who was laughing along, but with an undertone of annoyance.

“Ha-ha-ha,” Yunhyeong said sarcastically as he imitated Hanbin. “No I know he likes me as well, he haven’t just admit it yet,” Yunhyeong said as he crossed his arms, glancing at the smiling Donghyuk. Hanbin looked at Donghyuk and felt a familiar feeling. Just like this, glancing at his beloved one, had he done as well, and it was one of the most beautiful and scariest feelings as what if you got caught, it would be awkward. Hanbin was glad he could say that Jinhwan was his.

“So you and Jinhwan?” Yunhyeong asked curious as he shifted gaze towards Jinhwan who rocked Hanbyul on his hip.

“Yes,” Hanbin smiled as he looked at the sight and nodded. “Oh but don’t let it spread out, or else I’ll let this spread out, and make your life miserable,” Hanbin said referring to the mascot incidence.

Yunhyeong began laughing as he Hanbin was threatening him with the mascot incidence. “Sure sure! I won’t tell,” he said in between his laughs. “But tell me, why shouldn’t it be? Are we doing a Romeo and Juliet or?” he said as he elbowed Hanbin in his arm, smirking.

Hanbin rolled his eyes at his silly friend. “Ha-ha-ha, wow you’re so funny,” he sarcastically said as he looked at Jinhwan. “No I just don’t want to be gossiped about and you know that very well,” he said as he lifted an eyebrow and his friend. Yunhyeong made a downward smile with his mouth and nodded, as he knew Hanbin was right.

After studying Hanbin, who was looking at Jinhwan, for a while, Yunhyeong smirked again. “All this teasing,” he suddenly let out, making Hanbin look at him confused. “All this pranks we pulled towards him, was because you had fallen head over heels with him?” He said making Hanbin’s cheek suddenly paint a pretty red shade.

“W-what the hel-

“Oh that’s adorable! Who would’ve thought that!” Yunhyeong continued on teasing Hanbin as Hanbin felt defenceless.

“Shut up or I’ll kill you,” Hanbin said all red, making Yunhyeong laugh till his stomach hurt.

“Yeah, yeah, what ever you say, Hanbin,” he said as he turned around to the two boys. Hanbin was quite surprised to hear his own name coming from his mouth, but somehow, he bag to like that more than ‘B.I’. “Let’s so back shall we?” Yunhyeong said as he began walking, making Hanbin tag along.

The two of them went back to the others and enjoyed chatting, laughing, sharing candies with kids and generally just having a great time, until Hanbyul began complaining about being hungry. The two couples, one with a kid, walk their way as Jinhwan and Hanbin goes to a family restaurant to feed Hanbyul. Sure they got stares, some whispers and some even squealing over their cuteness. After all they did look a like couple with a kid. After food was down in their bellies, Hanbyul yawned, earning a chuckle from Jinhwan and a suggestion that it was late from Hanbin. Turns out that the suggestion was the best one so far, as Hanbyul already had fallen asleep.

On their way home they chatted and laughed, recalling how awkward the meeting with their friends had been, but at the same time wonderful. They both had felt a bit more relived after telling someone. After putting Hanbyul to bed, Hanbin and Jinhwan was already ready to go to Jinhwan’s.

They sat on the buss, Jinhwan leaning onto Hanbin’s shoulder and Hanbin playing with Jinhwan’s hands. Was there a thing Jinhwan really didn’t want to, was this evening to end and he wants to spend more time with Hanbin. They rarely have fun like this, and it’s not the usual studying, training, tutor lesson. It might sound selfish of him, but he wanted to spend more time with him. Then the idea hit him.

“Hanbin-ah, do you want to eat dinner at my place?” he asked as he lifted his head up. His question had earned a frown from Hanbin and Jinhwan sat up in the seat. “You’re taking me home anyway, why not come for dinner as well?” he asked smiling. Hanbin’s frown turned to a smile as he nodded his head in agreement, making Jinhwan almost squeal in excitement.

“I’ll call my sister,” Jinhwan said as he picked up his phone and dialled the number. After a few beeps, he heard her voice on the other side of the line.

“Hello, Jinan?” she answered the phone call.

“ Hey noona!” he exclaimed happy.

Jinhwan I was actually going to call you,” she said surprised.

“Oh really?” Jinhwan said amused over their sibling radar. “Uhm about the dinner today, could you make an extra portion? I’ll have a friend over,” Jinhwan said, suddenly turning shy.

“Jinhwan, are you making friends?” she said knowing it was not Donghyuk, which meant that Jinhwan was making more friends, at that’s all she ever wants, him being happy and social. “Oh my, I’m so happy, yes of course I’ll make more!” She said happily. “Oh and Jinhwan, I have a surprise to you when you get home,” she said smiling cheekily, even though she knew she couldn’t see him.

Jinhwan smiled, as he knew he had made his sister happy. Curious over her surprise, he left it at the phone call and waited till they got home, so it would be a surprise. He said his good byes and hung of before smiling at Hanbin and rests his head on his shoulder again. Hanbin couldn’t help but smile at how adorable Jinhwan was, though Jinhwan’s phone was really old fashioned, which had Hanbin thinking; he still didn’t have his number.

Upon arriving Jinhwan’s home, Hanbin became more and more nervous. Even though it was only his sister he was going to meet, it still felt like he was going through a check to see if he was qualified to be with Jinhwan. Jinhwan had tried to calm him by saying they weren’t like that all, but every sibling will be protective over their brothers or sisters, Hanbin was when it came to Hanbyul. As they were on the staircase in front, Hanbin stopped in his tracks, making Jinhwan turn around confused. Jinhwan noticed how Hanbin practically sweated as of nervousness. Jinhwan couldn’t help but smile. Since Jinhwan was on a stair above Hanbin, he was only a few inches shorter, making it easier for him to look into Hanbin’s eyes. He took Hanbin’s arms and smiled.

“It’s going to be fine, I promise, my sister won’t bite,” Jinhwan said making Hanbin chuckle before he nodded his head. “Good boy,” Jinhwan said as he pecked on Hanbin’s lips, before turning around and open the door, leaving Hanbin even more nervous.

As they got in to the small entrance hall, Jinhwan immediately smiled as he saw his sister waiting for them. “Noona!” he exclaimed as he hugged her, and she gladly hugged him back.

“Ah so this is your friend?” She asked as she made eye contact with Hanbin, who looked like a fragile Chihuahua. Hanbin was shocked, almost terrified over the similarities between Jinhwan and his sister.

“Yes! This is my dear friend, Kim Hanbin,” Jinhwan said as he broke the hug and turned towards Hanbin before he went to the kitchen.

“Hello, I’m Kim Sei Yeon,” she said as she smiled, extending her hand.

“My name is Kim Hanbin, it’s a pleasure to meet you Sei Yeon noona,” Hanbin panicked as he bowed at her, making her giggle.

“No need to be that formal,” he laughed. “Just call me Sei Yeon and everything will be fine,” she said. He chuckled nervously as he tried to find Jinhwan by his eyesight, but panicked, as he couldn’t find him. Suddenly both of them turned as they heard a loud thump, followed by a “mother!” by Jinhwan. Hanbin looked at Sei Yeon, who was smiling proudly. They duo walked into the kitchen, only to find Jinhwan and his mother hugging tightly. If Hanbin was right, he could swear he saw tears in Jinhwan’s eyes.

“She always works when he is home and this is the first time they have seen each other for days,” Sei Yeon whispered to Hanbin making him understand a bit more. Hanbin knew their mother were working hard, but he hadn’t known that Jinhwan, and Sei Yeon for that matter, hadn’t seen their mother in a long time. Hanbin stood there smiling at the beautiful yet awkward scene. Then Jinhwan suddenly broke of the hug as his mother wiped away his tears.

“Now, now Jinhwan, don’t cry, your guest is also here,” she said smiling as she looked at Hanbin, who awkwardly stood by the doorframe, not knowing where to put himself. Jinhwan’s mother approached Hanbin, studying, smiling. “So tall, and so handsome, and he has a well-built body,” he said as she looked everywhere at Hanbin, making Jinhwan highly uncomfortable and blushing as crazy, and Hanbin chuckle. “My name is Kim Eun Ah,” she said as she bowed, making Hanbin bow as a reflex.

“My name is Kim Hanbin, it’s a pleasure to meet you Mrs Kim,” Hanbin answered back, and Jinhwan couldn’t help but feel embarrassed as his mother definitely liked Hanbin.

“Polite boy as well, hmm you have chosen a nice friend,” she said as she smiled and Jinhwan who rolled his eyes in embarrassment. Hanbin looked at Jinhwan, smiling and Jinhwan couldn’t help but return it. He is more than happy that his mother likes him, but still it was a bit weird and awkward. “Let’s take some dinner now, shall we?”

Dinner had gone well and there were a lot of laughter and smiles around the table, making the atmosphere, which once awkward, filled with comfort and welcome. Hanbin had learned quite a lot about these two women, such as Eun Ah were a nurse and a linguist. No wonder Jinhwan did it so good in English! Jinhwan was worried that Hanbin would have a hard time here, but he has been laughing, cracking jokes, told them about his sister and a bit about his parents, leaving the part where his father is a CEO. Jinhwan rested his head in his palm, as his arm was planted on the table. Studying Hanbin, Jinhwan smiled from ear to ear, this was what he wanted, a family dinner, and Hanbin and his family getting along. It seems like this was his day today.

“Thank you so much for the dinner,” Hanbin said as he felt his stomach was filled with rice, beef, radish soup and other side dishes. As Eun Ah was beginning to take the plates, Hanbin quick on his feet. “Let me help!” he said as he took his and Sei Yeon’s plate. Jinhwan was about to take his plate and Hanbin stopped him. “No just sit down and rest,” he smiled making Jinhwan look surprised and Sei Yeon mumbled a ‘wow such a gentleman’.

Hanbin and Eun Ah stood in the kitchen, washing the dishes in a comfortable silence. Hanbin liked himself here. It was way smaller than is house, but it felt like it was filled with more love than his house. He wouldn’t mind moving to a small house, he and Jinhwan. He smiled to himself at the thought, as suddenly Eun Ah interrupted the silence.

“Hanbin-ah, you and Jinhwan are good friends, right?” Hanbin nodded, as he would count them as good friends when they were together. “Good, I just want to make sure that Jinhwan tags along with good people, cause up through the years he has had a hard time, and…” she trailed off. Hanbin looked at her curious. “My son is kind, too kind, and I’m afraid that he cant defend himself, as you may see, he isn’t one of the strongest boys,” she said and Hanbin knew what she meant. Jinhwan was small, but as it was a flaw for some, it was a beauty to him. “And up through the years Jinhwan have had a hard time, and he ha been bullied by this guy B.I or whatever they call him,” at the sound of his “nickname” Hanbin choked and dropped the spoon he was drying on the floor, making him almost fall down to get the spoon. Panic hit him. has Jinhwan been talking about him? In this way? Well it makes sense, after all, he was horrible towards him.

As Hanbin still was on the floor, Eun Ah squatted down to hi level and put her hand on his hand and looked him deep in the eye. Hanbin gulped as it felt like she could see right through him. “Could you please take good care of Jinhwan, he is really one of the sweetest boys out there and he is really fragile. I want you to protect that smile I never could protect,” she said as she had hint of tears in her eyes. Hanbin looked at her and nodded.

“I promise.”

After the dishes were clean, Hanbin and Eun Ah joined Jinhwan and Sei Yeon in the living room. Hanbin looked around and saw lots of pictures surrounding them. He noticed a man appeared on lots of the photos, assuming it was their father Hanbin smiled an nodded to him.

“Okay surprise time!” Sei Yeon said excitingly as Hanbin and Eun Ya sat down around the table on the sofas. “Okay Jinan, you know the waitress job I have?” she asked as Jinhwan nodded her to continue. “Well I got a raise!” she squealed excited making Jinhwan hug her tight.

“Congratulations! It’s well deserved,” he said smiling sincerely at her.

“But here’s the best part,” she said as she pointed in front of Jinhwan’s lips. “I bought you a new phone!” she exclaimed happily as she gave him an box with a phone in, earning a shocked expression from Jinhwan and a clap from Hanbin and Eun Ah.

Jinhwan shook his head surprised. “No, you can’t mean it,” he almost whispered as he held the box in his hand. “You shouldn’t spend money on me,” Jinhwan said as he hugged her tight.

“But I want to and you are worth spending money on,” she said as he hugged her tight, whispering a ‘thank you’.

Seeing Jinhwan look so happy made Hanbin smile unconsciously. It definitely made him more eager to keep his promise with Jinhwan’s mother. He will protect that precious smile, whatever price it may cost, Hanbin will take care of it, after all, it was the most precious thing about him. His smile, happiness and kindness. Hanbin wouldn’t let him down, ever.

After the surprise and more chatting, it had turned late and Hanbin was ready to go. As he had said his good byes to the two women, all was left was to say goodbye to his beloved. Jinhwan walked out on the stair with him and saw how the stars had taken their places now. Both Hanbin and Jinhwan looked up, before looking at each other. Jinhwan smiled as Hanbin caressed his cheek.

“I hope you had a great time,” Jinhwan said. “And I’m sorry about my mom and noona if you felt awkward,” he apologised looking down. Hanbin smiled at the smaller before taking a finger under his chin and lifting it.

“Don’t ever apologise for something beautiful as you family, and I had a great time, they all made me feel like home,” he said as he looked as Jinhwan who looked at him with big eyes. “ More home than my own home,” he whispered the last part.

“Hanbin,” Jinhwan said as he slung his arms around Hanbin’s neck and hugged him. “Your home is as beautiful as mine, different but still beautiful,” Jinhwan said into the hug, making Hanbin smile as the pulled apart. Still holding around his neck, Jinhwan leaned in, and Hanbin followed right after as they lips met. It wasn’t a long hot tongue kiss, but a short passionate one to show their love. They broke of the kiss as Hanbin rested his forehead on Jinhwan’s.

“Do you know I love you?” Hanbin asked as he breathed out.

“As much as I love you,” Jinhwan answered pecking on his lips before turning Hanbin around, which shocked Hanbin. “Okay you have to go now, or you’ll miss the buss,” Jinhwan chuckled, making Hanbin laugh as he shook his head.

“Oh wait! Jinhwan, Hanbin bent done on one knee making Jinhwan’s eyes wide. His heart thumped fast in his chest and Jinhwan didn’t know what to do. Wasn’t it a bit early? Or? “Can have you number?” he asked smirking making Jinhwan roll his eyes after almost having a shock.

“No, you can’t have my number, you ,” Jinhwan said laughing, as Hanbin stood up and approached Jinhwan.

“Then I have to force it out of you!” Hanbin said as he picked Jinhwan up and spun him around, making Jinhwan laugh as well as it tickled. After going on for about five minutes, Jinhwan’s throat hurt form laughing.

“Okay, okay OKAY! You’ll get my number, Jinhwan said in between his laughs. After receiving each other’s numbers, Hanbin stole a quick peck on Jinhwan’s lips before walking towards the fence made of tree.

“Bye Jinhwan, see you tomorrow,” Hanbin waved as he left the ground, leaving Jinhwan standing at the doorstep until Hanbin was out of sight, smiling to himself at the thought of his silly boyfriend.
