His Friends

My tutor Jinhwan

Packing his stuff and dragging his chair into the desk, Jinhwan was finally ready to go after a long and tiring day from school. School has been killing him lately with all the assignments and tests. Jinhwan roamed the room, looking for Donghyuk, still wanting answers. Donghyuk’s departure to the toilet was fair enough, but the fact that he did not come back and abandoned him at the rooftop by himself, made Jinhwan irritated. He knew that Donghyuk weren’t only going to the toilet, and he was proven right when class had started and Donghyuk had come a bit later in, cheeks all flustered. Jinhwan had seen the apologetic look his best friend gave him, and forgave him, after all, he probably had his reasons, and Jinhwan hadn’t many others than Donghyuk to go to.

He slung his bag over his shoulders and hinted to Donghyuk that he was ready and they could leave. Usually it would be a tutor lesson after school, but seeing how angry Hanbin had been all of sudden today, Jinhwan thought the lesson was more than cancelled. If Hanbin was still angry, Jinhwan didn’t know, but he knew that he didn’t want to work with a grumpy kid who hadn’t control on his hormones. Donghyuk walked up to him, still with an apologetic look that shone through his eyes. Donghyuk was about to talk, when Hanbin interrupted, “c’mon, we don’t have all time in the world!” Jinhwan sent Donghyuk a confused look, only to receive a shrug from Donghyuk’s shoulders, as he knew just as little as Jinhwan. Jinhwan sent him an apologetic look, before trying to catch up with Hanbin who had already began walking.

“B.I” Jinhwan shouted, aware that in school ground he should call him B.I and not Hanbin. Jinhwan understood early that the whole tutor lesson was not to be spoken about in school, if it was of pride, or ashamedness, Jinhwan didn’t know, still he knew enough to not speak about it. Luckily there weren’t many student left in the hall, as school had ended. Hanbin turned around at the direct, yet sweet voice. He smiled from ear to ear as he saw the small petite boy jogging up towards him. Why this small sequence excited Hanbin, he didn’t know, but it did made him indeed happy.

“Where are we going?” Jinhwan asked confused as he looked around, not wanting to draw any attention. “We are having the stupid lesson, as we usually have, or did you forget it already?” Hanbin said, and Jinhwan looked at him surprised. Were they really going to have a lesson now? Even after Hanbin had been this mad? He surly was a bipolar person, yet it seemed to make Jinhwan happy. Not that he is bipolar, but that he shows both his sides to him.

“No I just thought since you were so…” Jinhwan trailed off, not wanting to make Hanbin angry. Who knew what might pull Hanbin’s trigger. Being Hanbin’s bully victim past the years has learnt him that Hanbin has short temper, and usually doesn’t like to be talked back at.

“I was so…?” Hanbin asked, wanting answers. What did the little boy think of him?

"No never mind,” Jinhwan said as he looked up at Hanbin. By this time they were the only ones left in the hall, making it easier for both to speak as well. “So are we picking Hanbyul up today as well?” Jinhwan asked as they walked towards his locker. Jinhwan grabbed the math and biology book, as those were the subjects they were going to focus on today.

"Nah, today we are not going to my house, “ Hanbin said, earning curious look from Jinhwan. “We will be studying at the library for today.” Jinhwan looked at him surprised. Were they actually going to be out in public? Jinhwan thought Hanbin was too ashamed to be seen with Jinhwan, that they couldn’t work outside of his home. A smiled snuck unconsciously upon Jinhwan’s face. They were going to the library for the first time. Jinhwan hadn’t been there for a long time, as tutoring Hanbin at his home had taken over most of his free time. It was actually crazy to think how much time he had spent with Hanbin.

“Okay,” was Jinhwan’s simple answer. Hanbin watched Jinhwan walk in front of him.  Did Jinhwan suspect something? Was he curious why Hanbin didn’t want to take him home today? Truth is, Hanbin was a bit disappointed that Jinhwan didn’t ask why, nor gave slighted hint to be curios. However, Hanbin didn’t want Jinhwan at home at all, since his father was at home now. First of all, Hanbin was never going to reveal to his dad that he had a tutor. His father already looked down enough on him because of the sudden change in grades. To make his father proud again, he needs to improve, without Jinhwan being exposed. Second of all, his father would probably scare Jinhwan away in the minute Jinhwan saw him. You wonder where Hanbin, or rather said; B.I got his scary look from. Well the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Hanbin’s father could literally kill, and is Hanbin hadn’t been his son; he would’ve been dead by now.

Hanbin came back from the land of thoughts as Jinhwan spoke up. “Okay lets do this,” Jinhwan said as he looked at Hanbin, smiling widely. Hanbin returned the smile. Hanbin was really happy, because now he was going to spend the time with Jinhwan. Jinhwan smiled as Hanbin began to walk. Hanbin do have a beautiful smile. Where the sudden though came from, Jinhwan didn’t know, but he couldn’t help but studying even more. Jinhwan liked how Hanbin’s dimples showed off when he was smiling, and how his cheeks were lifted way more. Hanbin smiling face is way more comfortable than his normal face. To think that only a smile can change a persons appearance is fascinating. But what surprised Jinhwan the most was how happy Hanbin seemed to be.

The library was, as usual, filled with the smell of old books. Hanbin didn’t like it at all. Why the hell would he choose such a bad place to work at? But seeing how the library excited the smaller, Hanbin pushed the thought away. Hanbin couldn’t help but feeling energy come to him as the smaller receives energy from such an old place. Honesty speaking; Hanbin was rarely this happy to be studying, but there were something about the situation. The new place they were in, Jinhwan gave him energy by being excited of the library, and they were all alone, just the two of them, and no Junhwe to ruin it.

They had been working effectively for nearly an hour, which surprised Jinhwan, considering how the other tutor lessons had been. He was surprised by how happy Hanbin had seemed today, which is a big contrast compared to earlier. Jinhwan couldn’t help but smile at him. Hanbin was so focused as he drew two lines under the answer. Jinhwan chuckled as he returned to his book. It was a book of two boys who had to survive together through a dessert, a romance novel, it was actually highly recommended around here and there, and Jinhwan had to read it. As the plot had devolved to a more romantic one, Jinhwan felt his cheeks heathen up a bit. Somehow, Jinhwan seemed to compare the characters with himself and Hanbin. Why? He didn’t know. He had actually never thought of them other than tutor buddies, and he shouldn’t either. But still, deep down, if he was conscious about it or not, he still knew there were something.

Jinhwan suddenly heard a humming filling his ears. As he looked up, he realised that Hanbin was humming on a song; rather a humming, it sounded more like he was rapping in a low voice to himself. Jinhwan listened carefully to Hanbin’s low and soft rap. He was really good, and it came all natural to him. Jinhwan couldn’t help but smile at the thought. Hanbin has secret talents. Jinhwan wondered if his friends knew he could rap. Of course they had to, they are after all his best friends.

“Wow you’re good,” Jinhwan’s soft and sweet voice made Hanbin look up from the math assignment. . Had he been rapping again? He needed to stop. Event though Hanbin loves rap with all his life, he can’t do it. Not as long as his father decides over him, which will probably be until he dies. “You should become a rapper.” Hanbin knew Jinhwan’s words were only meant as an encouragement, but Hanbin became pissed of it.

“Forget about it,” he said as he focused on the math book again, making Jinhwan jump a little in his seat. The least Jinhwan wanted now was Hanbin to become angry again. Jinhwan sighed as he looked down in his book again. Maybe rapping is personal to him, and doesn’t want to share it with others? Perhaps he does this in his free time, maybe he was rapping alone or together with someone? Does his friends knows about it? While thinking of his friends, other thoughts crossed Jinhwan’s mind. A certain Goo Junhwe. What had he meant with Hanbin not being a person to trust? Were these two really friends, after all Junhwe had been bad behind his back in some way.

“Hanbin-ah,” Jinhwan said carefully. Uncontrollably, Hanbin felt a small flutter in his heart by Jinhwan adding “ah” to his name. Hanbin felt certain warmth grow throughout his body, it was refreshing and he felt the happiness almost take over. “How long have you been friends with Junhwe?” By the mention of Junhwe’s name, Hanbin’s heart sunk to the bottom, and all the warmth was replaced by coldness in his stomach. The coldness climbed up and reached his face as well, but decided to play it cool. He leaned to the chair and crossed his arms.

“We’ve been friends for quite some time. Everyone in our gang, actually. It all started with the stupid bunny, Bobby. We both lived in America when we were about 4 years old, and two foreigner kids at the same place would automatically become good friends, right?” slowly nodding, Jinhwan was shocked. Hanbin had lived in the states? That must have been quite the experience, despite the young age. Jinhwan had never imagined someone in his school would’ve lived another place than Korea, unless they were foreigner. “We hung out every single day and had a great time, but then I turned seven, my family decided to move back to Korea, and me and bobby broke the bond, since we hadn’t any way to communicate, as we were only about seven years old.” Hanbin paused as he thought of the upcoming content. He sighed with a mixture of anger and frustration. “Then when I came to Korea again, I met with Junhwe, my amazing friend,” he said sarcastically, making Jinhwan chuckle. “Actually, the first time we met was my first day of school and he told me I wasn’t a pretty boy and my nose were too big. I couldn’t understand what he meant by it, but later as we developed and learned terms, I learned that he was quite the sassy person, he and his big mouth. Urgh, he should learn to shut it once or twice, his talking too much. Anyway yeah he told me I wasn’t a pretty boy, so I didn’t want anything to do with him. But then once at the playground, more specific sandbox, two kids who were probably a year older were bullying Junhwe, he couldn’t protect his pretty face, so I came to his rescue. To that he answered that my face wasn’t that bad, and after that we became good friends.” Jinhwan couldn’t help but to think how similar their childhoods stories had been. Donghyuk and him, and Hanbin and Junhwe had somewhat the same meeting.

“Then bobby moved back to Korea and we were finally reunited. Oh how badass we were,” Hanbin said chuckling, as he remembered the past trouble they would get into. “We always did bad things and ended up with fighting against other “gangs” as we would like to call us at that time. When I say ‘we’ I mean Bobby, Junhwe and I. We were a nice trio, even though it was really awkward between Bobby and Junhwe, which is fair enough since I was their mutual friend. Later on we stumbled upon this kid who was really a good kid. We thought he didn’t match out style at all so we ended up leaving him behind. But then it turned out that he would save us all” Hanbin said as he looked back at the past memory.

“Yah! Isn’t that the ugly bunny? Haha!” Said one of the 15 years old guys while his friends laughed at his taunting towards the younger. Sure, B.I along with Bobby and Junhwe made an awesome gang at only the age of 13, and there were many kids who were afraid of them, but still no one dared to come across those who were two years older. They were the scariest of them all.

“Why are they so crooked?” Another one said, “Are you too poor to get braces?” The rest of the kid once again took a round of laughter, making bobby shrink in his own skin. Bobby couldn’t help the fact that he was born with them like this? And was it bad that he maybe weren’t rich enough to get brace? He didn’t want to make his mom pay for something only he can get use of when his whole family needed money for their own economy.

“Why do you have such a broken Korean language?” the third and the tallest said. “He think its soooo cool to be from America, when in reality it’s a pretty ty place, don’t you think?” the guy nodded towards the first guy, as he took a frim grip around Bobby’s shoulder, ready to punch him.

“Yeah and beside what the hell with the half moon eyes? You want to be ing rabbit? Oh wait your teeth, your eyes ahhhh, I’m so sorry I didn’t realise that you were a ing animal! My bad,” he laughed taunting along with his friends and the only thing bobby wanted was to vanish from the earth’s surface.

B.I felt bad watching his friend getting bullied, and he wasn’t able to do anything as one of the older guy’s friends held both him and Junhwe tight. B.I saw that Bobby, the cheerful happy Bobby who thinks no evil existed in this world, were on the verge to cry, then he knew they were in a messed up situation. Junhwe kept shouting to the boy who held him not to touch his hair, which made their gang sound less tough. B.I mentally punched Junhwe. B.I looked at realised, there were nothing he could do for his friends, his brothers.

When all hope was lost and B.I thought, this is it, then suddenly a sharp voice cut through the thick air of scariness and cockiness. “Yah! You guys aren’t worth a if you think bullying him will help you at any costs!” Yunhyeong, the guy they had rejected earlier, said as he flung a solid punch at the guy who stood in front of Bobby, making him scream in pain. This caused the guys who were supposed to hold B.I and Junhwe to lose focus, which they saw as an opportunity. B.I kicked the guy in the balls, making his scream like there were no tomorrow. Junhwe took an uppercut at his guy making him nosebleed in the second he hit him.

The, in total, five guys began walking towards them, tired of small kids playing around. There where a long silence before one of the elder guys ran towards them, fist high, ready to punch, but Yunhyeong was already ahead of him and had planted a solid punch in his stomach, making him fly backwards. When the other guys saw this, they looked at each other before making a run for it.

When the other struggled to catch their breaths, Yunhyeong walked over to Bobby, taking his hand. “Dude, it’s going to be fine now,” he said smiling, making Bobby smile. In that moment B.I realised he had misjudged this lad. After that incidence, they swore to each other to always be by each other ad protect one another.

Jinhwan smiled at the story, even though he was a bit scared that they were this violent at such a young age, yet it was a good story. They returned back to the studying which again seemed to go really smooth. Jinhwan could proudly say that this study lesson went really well, and somehow Jinhwan feels like they have become a bit closer? Not best friends or anything, but a bit closer.

Donghyuk looked nervous around at the café as he sat on a table for two, waiting. Looking at he clock, to reveal that it already had passed 10 minutes, disappointed Donghyuk. Yunhyeong didn’t actually seem to be a person that always runs late. He shifted gaze towards the door, in hope that Yunhyeong was passing by that door in any minute. When the door opened, Donghyuk’s heart began to flutter. Unfortunately, reality didn’t match with his hopes, as the next person to walk through the door was a complete stranger. Donghyuk sighed as he leaned towards the backrest on the chair. As expected: Yunhyeong was only playing with him. Why would he even want to meat with him outside school? It was not like they had a chemistry, even though Donghyuk had to admit, he automatically became more shy whenever Yunhyeong was around. Shaking his head, Donghyuk stood up ready to go as suddenly heard someone shouting his name.

“Donghyuk-ah! I’m so sorry! The buss was stuck in traffic, and I didn’t manage to come faster,” Donghyuk’s heart fluttered more and more by each word Yunhyeong told him. Unconsciously, Donghyuk began to smile, and Yunhyeong reflected the smile like a mirror.

“I-It’s fine, I only waited for about 10 minutes,” Donghyuk said as shyness took over when Yunhyeong’s white teeth shone bright.

“That’s 10 minutes longer than it should be,” he winked, making Donghyuk’s cheeks lighten up a colour of red. “Anyway, you wanted to talk about B.I and Jinhwan?” Yunhyeong said as he sat down and made contact with a waiter. Donghyuk followed Yunhyeong’s lead and sat down as well, looking directly at boy across of him. He took a deep breath and went through his mind. There were so much he wanted to say, how he didn’t like B.I, the way e treated Jinhwan or his behaviour, how Yunhyeong could be a part of this, but most importantly, he wanted to stop B.I and Jinhwan being together. Donghyuk was more than terrified that Jinhwan would regret it with his life.

"Well yeah, let’s both be true here, what B.I does to him is inhuman. He has been bullying him for the past 7 years, and suddenly he want’s him as his tutor, and he is not a good student! He keeps getting angry and he has never control over his stupid emotions, and then he punishes Jinhwan for that? For him being stupid? Yes I think that’s horrible wrong of him. Jinhwan have been trying for so long to not being near him, but now he is forcing him to be at home with him! Do you know how much time they spend together? ”

“Aish, I should’ve made you my tutor as well! Then I would’ve plenty of time with you,” Yunhyeong teased. “I’m so handsome and I deserve a cutie like you,” he winked, making Donghyuk blush like mad. A waiter came and took only Yunhyeong’s order, as Donghyuk already have had a drink f tea. Donghyuk took a breath as looked down at his hands that rested on the table.

“Y-Yah! I’m serious! Jinhwan is too kind,” he whispered.  “He keeps telling me that B.I is really a good person, and that Jinhwan will show me that B.I is a kind and loving person, yet he has never given me any specific proves, only his words. We both know words against actions, which in this case are the proves, are nothing but a dead end.” With that, Yunhyeong knew it was time to be serious, even though Donghyuk’s innocence was too cue.

Donghyuk was too stuck in the though of what to say next, that Yunhyeong’s big hand on Donghyuk’s smaller hand sent him shock through his body. A bit startled by the sudden touch, Donghyuk jumped in his seat.

“Donghyuk-ah, I understand that you’ve gotten the impression you have of B.I, and I know he might not be the best person in the world, but trust me, he can be a really nice person, if you just take time to know him,” Yunhyeong tried to make Donghyuk calm. “Maybe that’s what Jinhwan has now, since he’s so much with him?” Yunhyeong said calmly.

“That’s not the problem! I just don’t want B.I to bully him!” Donghyuk let out a frustrated shout.

“But lately I’ve seen Jinhwan smile more,” Yunhyeong tried.

“Are you telling me that he is making my best friend more happy than me?” Donghyuk said, crossing his arms, clearly not in the mood.

“No I’m saying that maybe B.I makes him happy? I know that B.I is more happy with Ji-“

“I don’t want him near Jinhwan!” Donghyuk suddenly shouted, attracting all the people’s attention. Donghyuk were fast to cover his mouth in embarrassment. Yunhyeong looked at him surprised. Yunhyeong couldn’t help but associate it with an overreacting girlfriend. Yunhyeong was unsure what Donghyuk’s main goal for this conversation was, but he knew he needed to change the course of it. Donghyuk took a deep breath.

“I just want you to make B.I stop being with Jinhwan. It’s wrong of him to use Jinhwan to get good grades,” Donghyuk said, avoiding

“As far as I see it I am in no position to do anything, but Donghyuk?” Yunhyeong asked, making Donghyuk look at him. “I was wondering if we seriously could talk about other things than B.I and Jinhwan and maybe more about us,” he paused, making Donghyuk blush like mad, if he did already. Yunhyeong caught him off guard again and he didn’t like it. Donghyuk could feel his heart beating two times faster than usual.

“D-don’t joke around like that!” Donghyuk said, but the stutter didn’t make him sound serious, making Yunhyeong smile. Of course Yunhyeong had to play with him, it’s not like he would ever fall for a person like him. Yunhyeong was too amazing, too handsome and too cool to fall for someone like him.

“Donghyuk, I’m serious, I have had my eyes on you for a while,” woth these words, Donghyuk became speechless, and a silence filled the room, with only the sounds of two hearts beating like crazy.
