Secrets and Lies

My tutor Jinhwan

Finally done with most of the preparations, Hanbin sighed in relief. This was going to be the best birthday surprise party ever, and all for the person Hanbin cared the most about, along with Hanbyul. He couldn’t wait to see Jinhwan’s surprised face, and he would probably start crying in touchiness. He looked over at Chanwoo who hung up confetti from the roof to the lamp. Honestly speaking, Hanbin was very surprised that Chanwoo had agreed and been this eager to help him. From what Jinhwan had told him, so wasn’t Chanwoo that happy to see Jinhwan’s face at all.  But it seems like Jinhwan was wrong. Chanwoo had helped him all along, and often asked to help or simply just showed up and helped. Hanbin smiled as he looked at the room, which began taking place as a surprise party. He couldn’t have done it without Chanwoo.

The smile that was plastered on Hanbin’s face, soon faded away. Hanbin felt bad for lying to Jinhwan. He felt bad for telling Jinhwan each and every day that he would spend the days writing raps with Bobby, while in reality he was preparing this surprise party for him, with Chanwoo. He couldn’t ask Bobby for help. Bobby would probably think its weird. But he would invite the gang to the surprise party, saying that Chanwoo arranged it to the, while to Jinhwan he would say it was he himself who had arranged it. Wait, would it sound believable for the other that Chanwoo arranged it for Jinhwan? Oh well, he could take care of the details later.

Hanbin looked in Chanwoo’s direction as Chanwoo began talking. “Hanbin, it seems like we should buy more confetti, this isn’t enough, and maybe some more party things,” he said as he looked around the room. As Hanbin looked around in the room, considering Chanwoo’s thought, Chanwoo glanced at Hanbin. Frankly, Chanwoo didn’t care at all about the surprise party, but by offering help, he could spend time with him. Honestly Chanwoo had no idea how to get close to Hanbin and follow Junhwe and his plan, but Hanbin surly made it easy for him. Hanbin had come up to him in all secret and asked for help with the preparations. What was a better opportunity to take Hanbin away from Jinhwan than this? This way he would have Hanbin all to himself, and Junhwe could work on his plan on hijacking Jinhwan. Eventually Hanbin has to realise that Chanwoo was a much sweeter and cuter and of course an better option than the shorty, right? That was Chanwoo’s plan to do, event though he wasn’t really enthusiastic about Jinhwan’s secret birthday party, he would make a good use of all the opportunities he gets with Hanbin, to make hi open his eyes and realise that he was better than that other thing.

Luckily for Chanwoo Hanbin agreed. “Yeah we should probably get more,” he said with his familiar thinking face.

“Okay let’s go!” Chanwoo exclaimed with eager. Too much eager. Chanwoo took a step too close to the edge of the stepladder he was standing on. Suddenly he lost his balance and felt the whole weight of his body go downwards. He closed his eyes, in hope that the pain would be less painful. As he thought he was near dead, he suddenly felt a pair of strong arms hold tight around hold, keeping him safe and warm. He felt his heart beat up in his throat when he looked up at Hanbin, who, more than ever looked handsome and brave. Chanwoo lost the whole dictionary looking at the stunning man. “Y-you saved me,” Chanwoo managed to press out. Hanbin’s perfect white teeth were to seen, as he made sure it was nothing.

Hanbin helped the younger up. “Phu that could almost go wrong,” Hanbin said as he looked at the stepladder and then at Chanwoo, making him jump in his skin. When Hanbin’s eyes landed on Chanwoo, Chanwoo were looking at him as if he was a hero. Hanbin gulped, as Chanwoo wouldn’t stop staring at him. “Chanwoo are you alright?”  Hanbin asked half concerned, half scared.

“Yes, yes! Now let’s go,” Chanwoo said even more eagerly, this time not in danger of falling. He took Hanbin’s hand and went outside from his house. Yes the whole surprise party would happen at Chanwoo’s. It was totally unacceptable to do it at Hanbin’s place. The problem is not to host a party, cause Hanbin has done that before, many times, but the problem is Jinhwan. Remembering the last time Jinhwan was brought up between his father and him, Hanbin didn’t dare to bring Jinhwan along another time. He wasn’t afraid of his father’s disapproval, but rather that his father could scare Jinhwan out of his life.

When the two had reached the marked, Hanbin suddenly felt coldness went down his back. Fir some reason he felt uneasy, like something that shouldn’t be there, was there. Was it the unusual crowded place, or was he afraid that Jinhwan might me there, he didn’t know, but there were something making him uneasy. As he was in his own little world, Chanwoo grabbed his hand, making Hanbin snap out of his trance and try to withdraw his hand. Chanwoo on the other hand held tighter, not going to let go in the first round. “Hanbin, it’s such a crowded place, I don’t want to loose you,” Chanwoo said smiling. Truth be told, the only persons Hanbin held hands with was Hanbyul and Jinhwan. It felt weird to not hold a small hand anymore, rather an almost bigger hand than his. However Hanbin nodded and kept going, hand in hand with Chanwoo. It felt weird and wrong, yet he understood the youngers concern. Today was way more crowded than usual, and it would be bad to loose each other here.

Chanwoo liked the comfort and the warmness to Hanbin’s hands, and this wasn’t the last time he would feel it. That he was sure of. Chanwoo scouted around the market, looking for party things. Chanwoo tiptoed, as the crowded market was too much for him to see a thing, when he suddenly spotted a short silhouette in the large crowd. Chanwoo looked a bit taken aback at first before he smirked to himself. He looked to left, and lucky enough for him was there a small party stand there as well. Chanwoo squeezed lightly Hanbin’s hand as a sign for finding it. Now he only had to get closer.

“Hanbin-ah,” Chanwoo said, adding more to the last ‘ah’. Hanbin frowned as Chanwoo somewhat reminded him of Jinhwan and the way he did it, only Jinhwan did it way cuter than Chanwoo.

“Yeah did you find it?” Hanbin replied, not really paying attention, making Chanwoo fake pout until Hanbin looked at him. Hanbin didn’t know if he was supposed to be cute, but it turned out too weird that the older began laughing and ruffled Chanwoo’s hair, making Chanwoo smile. Chanwoo pointed at the stand while walking Hanbin over. Chanwoo glanced carefully over at the tent Jinhwan stood in. Suddenly Chanwoo burst out laughing, as he saw a pair of monkey sunglasses.

“Hanbin-ah! These monkeys look like you!” Chanwoo laughed, making Hanbin look over at him. Hanbin couldn’t help but laugh at the younger. How stupid he looked. Hanbin turned around, trying to find some party supplies for the surprise party, while Chanwoo was not over the fun part. He was quick to take off the glasses and found a weird hat. “Does it look good on me?” Chanwoo asked as he posed in weird ways, whit a big, blue and red sunhat on. Hanbin couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the sight. Chanwoo glanced carefully in Jinhwan’s direction, with a smile playing on his lips. Bingo.

Jinhwan’s eyes were wider than ever. He couldn’t believe the sight right in front of him: Hanbin and Chanwoo. Jinhwan’s eyes traced down the whole scenario, breaking his heart more and more as he sees Hanbin’s smile, and laughter while being with the younger. What broke his heart the most was probably that they hold hands. He had never held Jinhwan’s hand public, maybe a few times, but that was where there were quite few people, and not in a crowded place like this! Not understanding the situation, Jinhwan couldn’t help but feel the blood bubble up in his veins. He couldn’t help that his heart pumped faster than ever. He couldn’t help the knot of jealousy that formed inside his stomach. He was going mad. His feet began moving by themselves, and his fist was tightened. He was about to explode, when suddenly Donghyuk, who had observed it all, grabbed his arm. Jinhwan looked confused up, not realising tears that had taken place in his eyes.

Donghyuk shook his head. “Jinhwan stop before you do something stupid,” his word seemed to hit Jinhwan, as Jinhwan hadn’t been conscious that he was about to make drama. “just calm down, lets go back and sort things out instead,” Donghyuk said as he held Jinhwan’s hand, and began walking the opposite direction.

Jinhwan followed like a kid that had just been yelled at. He looked behind him a few times, only to see the smile that he treasured the most, was shared with someone else.

As Chanwoo saw the two walking away, he was quick to pull up his phone and send a quick text to a certain person, before returning to Hanbin who looked at him weird. “Oh sorry it was my mom who sent me a text, and you know how mom’s are,” Chanwoo covered his lie with a joke, returning to the party stand. Hanbin’s face fell at Chanwoo’s statement.

“I wish,” he mumbled and Chanwoo looked up at him.

“Did you say something hyung?”

“Nothing at all,” Hanbin smiled weakly as he continued into the planning.

Jinhwan laid on Donghyuk’s bed, face buried into the pillow, refusing to listen to anything. “Jinhwan I think there must be a logical explanation to this, maybe there were some others here as well?” Donghyuk tried to convince him, but Jinhwan didn’t move a flinch. Donghyuk sighed at his best friend. Thinking back to it, it was kind of weird to see Hanbin and Chanwoo together. Then again, Donghyuk had heard from Yunhyeong that Hanbin’s father had forced Hanbin to become friends with Chanwoo for his company, and maybe this was a bonding thing?

“You know how they’re ‘forced’ to be friends”

“What about the handholding? Huh? That’s not what friends do. We are no exceptions!” he whispered to himself, recapping that they would not usually hold hands at all.

Donghyuk chewed on that thought. He was right, the handholding still didn’t add up at least to some points.  However, the place was actually crowded, and he and Jinhwan would probably do the same.

“Jin-“ was the furthest Donghyuk came before Jinhwan stood up from the bed.

“Sorry Dongie, I’ll be heading home, I feel kind off sick,” Jinhwan said petting his stomach. Donghyuk knew Jinhwan was lying, but seeing that Jinhwan didn’t want to search for any logical reasons now, Donghyuk smiled and nodded. As he walked out his best friend, his mother had stopped them, giving Jinhwan some baked cookies and had a small chat with him, Donghyuk sure could see the pain through the fake smile he put up for his mother. Donghyuk hated to see Jinhwan like that. Donghyuk closed the door behind him and stood on the stairs outside side with Jinhwan.

"You know Jinhwan, the best advice I can give you is to talk to Hanbin, and don’t let other thought push through before you’ve talked to him,” Donghyuk said as he leaned onto the front door.

Jinhwan nodded carefully before away some tears. “Yeah.” With that Jinhwan began walking home, and Donghyuk followed him with his eyes until he couldn’t see him anymore, worrying about his best friend. Donghyuk was definitely going to talk to Yunhyeong.

Jinhwan took Donghyuk’s advice and was more than prepared to talk to Hanbin. There had to be some reason behind it, he just knew it.

Hanbin, I saw you at the market with Chanwoo yesterday, would you explain that?

No, no, no that would be too harsh Jinhwan thought to himself.

Hanbin you and Chanwoo were at the market yesterday, Donghyuk told me, mind tell…

Jinhwan stopped that thought. He couldn’t involve Donghyuk unnecessarily.

I didn’t know you had come to be good friends with Chanwoo, would you…

Okay that definitely sounded like an overly attached girlfriend. Jinhwan sighted as he leaned onto his desk, trying out sentences he could tell Hanbin when “confronting” him about Chanwoo, without sounding like a possessive girlfriend. He could probably just ask someone else, maybe Bobby or something but that would be too pathetic. Suddenly the classroom door opened and in came smiling and laughing Hanbin looking at Jinhwan. Jinhwan couldn’t help but smile as well when Hanbin brought cheerfulness to the room.

What was Jinhwan afraid of? It was Hanbin, who, after Donghyuk, knew him the best! Hanbin wouldn’t get mad for him asking why he hung out with Chanwoo! Jinhwan stood up smiling. No he had no needs to be afraid, as he could ask his own boyfriend about things. Jinhwan was prepared to walk over to Hanbin, when Chanwoo appeared behind Hanbin, showing phone to Hanbin.

“Hanbin-ah!” Hanbin-ah? As far as Jinhwan knew, it was only him who used the ‘ah’ after Hanbin. Jinhwan’s smile faded realising that Hanbin wasn’t looking at him, but he had been smiling since before he came into the classroom. “Hanbin hyung! I told you this meme was fun! Oh you should check out this one as well!” Chanwoo cheerfully showed Hanbin another picture on the phone, making Jinhwan sit down on his seat, only looking at Hanbin. The feelings Jinhwan had yesterday; the surprise, the sadness, the knot in the stomach, it all returned to Jinhwan today as well, looking how happy Hanbin was with Chanwoo. Both yesterday and today, Jinhwan could swear he hadn’t seen Hanbin laugh this much.

Jinhwan felt the tears dwelling up, but refused to let them slide. What on earth was happening? Jinhwan looked up at Hanbin and noticed Chanwoo looked at him for a brief second, with a smirk across his lips, before he changed his gaze at Hanbin. Jinhwan really couldn’t understand a thing. Why would Hanbin do this? Shut him out for the past week? Hanbin hadn’t even texted him, other than a ‘gonna rap with Bobby, let’s talk later?’ but he never talked later, which annoyed Jinhwan beyond the limits, and not enough with that, the small brat of a Chanwoo kept going on to Hanbin. Sure Jinhwan knew that they weren’t official, so technically from others point of view, Hanbin was a single man, but Hanbin should have at least try to stop him? Hanbin knows that he is not single, he should at least tell his not interested! Hanbin is an idiot. Jinhwan heavily sighed before unpacking his bag. He would much rather focus on school, than thinking about this.

Hanbin told Chanwoo and the others to wait a second, as he walked up to Jinhwan. “Jinan listen to this Taek Jin from class B showed me a funny meme, here I’ll show you,” Hanbin said eagerly as he was about to unlock his phone, but was stopped by Jinhwan’s sudden coldness.

“No thanks Hanbin, class soon starting,” he said not even looking at Hanbin.

“But I swear its funny,” Hanbin laughed while he was about to show Jinhwan it once more.

“The teacher is soon coming Hanbin,” Jinhwan, once again, ignored him.

“Jinhwan, you’re seriously going to laugh from it! It was too funny even Chanwo-“ f

“Hanbin I seriously don’t want to see it,” Jinhwan said coldly as he opened the book, ignoring Hanbin, as he was nothing but a faint wind. Hanbin looked shocked at Jinhwan, not knowing what to say. He looked over at Bobby who seemed to be as surprised. He probably has had a bad sleep, Hanbin thought to himself as all he could answer was a faint ‘okay’.

Jinhwan felt bad in the minute, but he wasn’t in the mood at all. Class had started, but throughout the class, Jinhwan hadn't been able to focus at all. His mind was filled with Hanbin. In both good and bad ways. He had stolen a few glances behind him, only to see Hanbin looking at Taek Jin’s phone while they whispered something about Chanwoo, making Jinhwan’s temper rise. Somewhat Jinhwan felt hurt. Usually Hanbin would look at him and they would always get eye contact and mouth weird thing to each other. He just couldn’t understand what was Chanwoo’s deal, or Hanbin’s for that matter.

Hanbin looked at Jinhwan from behind. He thought of the reason why he could be like this today. Maybe he stood up on the wrong side of the bed? Or had a bad sleep? Maybe he just hadn't had a glass of milk? He usually gets angry if he doesn’t have that in the morning. A stupidly cute habit of Jinhwan. Hanbin chuckled at the thought as he rested his head on the palm, looking at Jinhwan. That was until Taek Jin poked him, as class A and B were together in this class.

“Hanbin, Chanwoo sent this video,” he said as he showed a video of some monkeys being stupid. “He said it was you,” Taek Jin continued as he began laughing. Hanbin chuckled, then quickly looked up at Jinhwan, who hadn't turned around and looked at him once. Jinhwan always turned around and they would mouth words and weird things together in silence.  Hanbin sighed as he laid down on the desk, looking at Jinhwan’s neck. The familiar neck he usually would look at, way before he actually knew Jinhwan. There was just something about his neck that Hanbin liked. He didn’t know why he liked it, or why it was the neck of all things, but he liked the slim, milky white neck, with hair cut up, so that more of the neck would be exposed. Hanbin didn’t know why, but fell asleep in class, with a goal to hold that neck.

The bell rang, and even though Jinhwan was quick to pack his stuff, he still was one of the last to leave.  He began walking out of the classroom, but stopped automatically as he came near Hanbin's desk. Squatting down, he looked at the sleeping Hanbin. He sure is beautiful. He has strong features that Jinhwan loved. The sharp nose, his big lips, a sharp jawline and of course his beautiful eyes, thought they were closed, Jinhwan knew they were beautiful, cause he had seen them a million times and still was not getting tired of them. Maybe because of Hanbin beauty, yet manliness, he needs someone cuter? Jinhwan had no clue, but one thing for sure, he felt threatened. Chanwoo seemed to getting closer to him lately, even going to market together. It seemed fun, having Hanbin with you on a market. Hanbin was smiling so bright.

“Can’t I make you smile like that?” Jinhwan whispered to Hanbin as he some hair away from Hanbin’s eyes. Suddenly the eyelids opened and a pair of beautiful brown eyes looked directly at him. In the same minute, the door opened just as fast as Jinhwan stood up, and while Jinhwan went out, Chanwoo came in. They stopped in the doorframe.

“Aren’t you supposed to be in third floor? It thought juniors were in the third floor in this period,” Jinhwan asked confused, looking up at Chanwoo.

“Yeah but Hanbin asked to meet him in between the classes and I thought why not sneak around when it’s Hanbin who’s asking,” Chanwoo said smiling.

Jinhwan nodded his head before he shook it. “Of course,” he said to himself, yet noticed by Chanwoo, as he walked out of the room.

A confused Hanbin looked at Jinhwan walking out, while Chanwoo came towards him. “What happened?” Hanbin asked looking in the direction where Jinhwan had gone.

“No nothing, it seems like Jinan hyung is grumpy,” Chanwoo laughed, while Hanbin was worried. Chanwoo noticed, as he was the only one to laugh. “Anyway,” he said to bring the attention to him. “I think we need more balloons, and maybe soon prepare for the guest list?”

As Chanwoo kept on talking, Hanbin had lost track a long time ago, only focusing on what happened to Jinhwan. Had he been sitting next to him in class just now? He was sure he had heard Jinhwan’s voice just now, before Chanwoo came. Or was it his imagination? No Hanbin was sure he had heard Jinhwan, but what did he say? That would forever be a mystery for Hanbin.

Lunch came by and they sat by the usual table. Jinhwan was the first to arrive, along with Bobby, and little bye little the others also came, followed lastly by Hanbin and Chanwoo, taking about something serious. Jinhwan couldn’t help but look at them, as the annoyance grew. Chanwoo’s hands around Hanbin's arm. They were leaning close to each other, looking at the phone. They sure could be mistaken for something else. In annoyance, Jinhwan slammed the chopstick on the table, making those around the table paying attention to him. Donghyuk had a concern look, as he knew Jinhwan’s concern. Bobby had a frighten look as he didn’t know this little person could get angry. Bobby had grew to know Jinhwan a little better after becoming friends with him through Hanbin, and one thing was for sure, he was not a person to get angry. Junhwe smirked, knowing the plan was going smoothly. Hanbin looked at him, while Chanwoo tried to contain his laughter.

Jinhwan looked up at Bobby and smiled. “Sorry I just remembered something, anyway how was your day? You probably had Mr. Choi today, right?” Jinhwan began causally talking, and the others tagged along, with a slight of worry for Jinhwan. Hanbin sat down in between Jinhwan and Bobby as there was a small space in between them, while Chanwoo had to be seated across them, making Jinhwan smile to himself.

“Yah Jinan, can I get that mushroom?” Hanbin asked out of the blue, pointing at Jinhwan’s lunch, catching Jinhwan off guard.

“Y-yah! Don’t call me that way! I’m older than you, you better treat me with some respect I tell you!” Jinhwan fake pouted, making the others around the table laugh. Jinhwan looked at them and smiled in relief. He didn’t want to gain unwanted attention. Though Jinhwan was happy that Hanbin had joked with him again. After some round of talks and the others began talking about something else that uninterested Hanbin, Hanbin turned to Jinhwan.

“Jinan, should we do something today? I think no one is going to be home,” he said as he thought for himself. Jinhwan eyes lighten up, as this was the first time in a week Hanbin had asked him. Jinhwan was more than eager to respond with a big ‘yes’, when he suddenly noticing Chanwoo who looked at them from across the table. When Jinhwan had noticed him, Chanwoo looked away and focused on the others conversation that he had no interest in. Jinhwan’s bright eyes turned darker.

“Eh, I’m sorry Hanbin, let’s take it another time,” he smiled half heartily at the taller. How could Jinhwan feel this threatened by a junior? Jinhwan could see in Chanwoo’s eyes that Chanwoo was curious about Hanbin.

Hanbin didn’t know if he should feel sad or disappointed, or rather if he had the right to feel that way. After all, the only thing he had done was to reject Jinhwan all this week. Hanbin nodded his head and ate in silence. While the others kept on with their conversations, Hanbin was determined to take Jinhwan out at least once this week. While he was deep in his thought, Jinhwan was quick to stand up and left the table. Hanbin was about to open his mouth when the school bell rang as a sign for class to soon start.

Lunch was fast over and the rush of students was always uncomfortable, but Jinhwan was walking fast to get into class early.

“Jinhwan, tomorrow then?” Jinhwan suddenly heard behind, making him stop. To is surprise Hanbin, was behind him, panting. He had run after him. Hanbin stopped up beside him, by the lockers as the other students kept walking into the classroom.

“Tomorrow?” Jinhwan asked confused, looking at Hanbin who panted in tiredness after running from the cafeteria to the second floor’s classrooms, in between all the students and down the long corridor, after Jinhwan.

“Yeah do you want to hang out tomorrow?” Jinhwan looked at Hanbin, who looked deeply into Jinhwan’s eyes.

Jinhwan looked at Hanbin, somewhat suspicious. Although Jinhwan was happy Hanbin asked, he still felt like it was very sudden after being rejected the whole week. Jinhwan didn’t know, but was sure Hanbin had been with Chanwoo all week as well. If Hanbin thought he would get both of them, he was dead wrong. If he wants to be with Chanwoo Jinhwan was not going to stop him. Who were Jinhwan to do so?

“Sorry I-I cant, maybe next time,” Jinhwan smiled. Hanbin panted a little more, before he looked everywhere to find himself.

“Ah yeah sorry,” he said as he scratched the back of his head. They stood there in a long silence, avoiding each other’s eyes, by any costs. After the long silence, they heard the teacher call in for class. Hanbin looked at the teacher nodding, before turning to Jinhwan, who stood there in silence. Had Hanbin done anything to hurt him? And if so, he regretted it truthfully, seeing Jinhwan being all distant.  “I will be going first,” he said as he awkwardly began walking into class, leaving Jinhwan finally able to spill a tear that he had held in for a long time now.

Jinhwan slid down the lockers until he was fully squatted down, crying. What was this? Why was he crying? Was it because he wasn’t good enough? Was it because he had just rejected Hanbin twice, when in reality all he wanted was to be with Hanbin more than ever? Jinhwan didn’t know, but tears were there.

After hanging around for around 5 minutes, his tears were stung onto his cheeks as he just kept staring right forward, thinking about nothing at all. That was until a silhouette came in front of him, blocking his staring point, making him look up. He looked up at the person, confused by seeing Junhwe.

“Junhwe, shouldn’t you be in class?” Jinhwan said as he dried away the stung tears.

“I could say the same to you,” Junhwe chuckled, as he squatted down beside Jinhwan. “Now tell me hyung, what’s the matter?” Junhwe asked.

Jinhwan looked briefly at Junhwe, before looking down at his shoes. “I’m not sure, it’s just complicated between me and Hanbin's friendship,” excluding the dating part “or maybe its not complicated at all, maybe I’m just imagining things, but lately Hanbin has been rejecting me awfully a lot, and I don’t know Junhwe, it’s frustration,” Jinhwan said. Why he said it to Junhwe of all people, he didn’t know, but it felt comfortable, being able to talk to someone.

“Yeah I have noticed, “ Junhwe said, making Jinhwan look at him.

“Y-you have?” Jinhwan said a bit sacred

“Yeah and he keeps on hanging out with that Chanwoo kid,” Junhwe said, making Jinhwan look at the floor again, fighting the tears that was returning once more. Junhwe noticed and looked at the smaller boy. “You know what Jinhwan, I think you should get a small break from Hanbin and Chanwoo and this ‘drama’. Focus on yourself and other people maybe?” Junhwe said as Jinhwan kept looking at the ground. “I’ve asked it before, but this time I think it’s a good opportunity for the both of us,” he said, making Jinhwan look at him. “Become my tutor Jinhwan, I mean it, I will help you through this if it’s hard for you,” Junhwe said as he held out a hand for Jinhwan.

Jinhwan looked from Junhwe to the hand before taking it. “Yes I’ll be your tutor.”
