Across the Ocean
“Don’t get eaten out there Taeng.”
“I won’t.”
“Promise me.”
Tiffany’s face was dead serious, her brows furrowed and chin tilted down, eyeing her until she responded.
“I promise Fany.”
“Good.”
There was that smile again, radiating the kind of sunshine that was only meant for her. How would Taeyeon cope a whole year without this girl beside her, she did not know but what she did know was Tiffany would not let her turn down this scholarship to study overseas. “Don’t be silly.” Tiffany would say to her whenever she had concerns about living abroad. “We can have secret English conversations once you get back, then no one will know what we’re talking about!” the light in the girl’s eyes were unmistakable she had high hopes for Taeyeon.
“Your flight is ready to board now Taeng.”
Taeyeon nodded, she wished for just a few more minutes with this girl. She had decided last week to not let her feelings be known. Long distance relationships were hard to maintain and who knows how Tiffany would react to her confession, Taeyeon definitely could not afford to lose her best friend right now or ever. So it is with a heavy heart when Taeyeon looks at Tiffany for the last time and gave her a sweet smile. They shared one last hug after countless others in the past two hours and Taeyeon walked towards her destination but not without locking eyes with Tiffany one last time. She broke her own promise with that one look she had confessed her feelings.

The sounds of compiled Korean conversations should be familiar to her but they felt so foreign as she walked through the arrivals gate. There were many people waiting for their friends and love ones peering eagerly into the space. Taeyeon glanced quickly from left to right no sign of her best friend. She wondered if Tiffany had forgotten about her flight landing at 6am today, she checked her watch it was past 7am now she’s here somewhere.
After searching for her best friend for more than half an hour her stomach began to grumble again. It was time to make a pit stop, she unlatched her pastel blue penny skateboard from her backpack and placed it on the floor. Taeyeon carefully cruised towards the cafés making sure not to run anyone over, she had a thing for being tricky and loved the challenge of skateboarding especially in tight spaces.
