Accident Prone

“Hey, she’s pretty cute.”

My wingman, as she so called herself, looked at me with a silly grin as she pointed towards a girl sitting not too far away from us. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her. “Not so loud,” I hissed before hitting Taeyeon on her shoulder. She only shrugged before leaning back, and rocking back and forth on the back legs of her chair.

“And I never thought the day would come where I could go pick up girls with my best friend,” she said with a chuckle.

“You thought right.”

“What? You don’t want to go pick up girls with me?” she said with an apparent frown as she let the chair sit on all four legs. Her frown suddenly turned into a mischievous grin as she started rocking her chair back and forth again. “Wait, I get it; you just want the girls all to yourself, huh? You know, I wasn’t surprised when you came out. I always knew you had a thing for me.”

I let out a frustrated groan before shooting my delusional best friend a glare. The librarian gave us a disapproving look before raising one finger to and gave us the universal “shut the hell up” signal. I mouthed a sorry before turning around and giving my best friend another glare. Ever since I came out of the closet, her and Tiffany wouldn’t stop trying to set me up with girls. Remind me again why I’m best friends with these two lovebirds?

“I don’t want to pick up girls with you because you have a girlfriend. Her name is Tiffany. Remember her?”

“Of course I do. I’m just trying to help you out here! The both of us are! In fact, it was her idea for me to go scope out girls with you.”

“We’re supposed to be studying,” I muttered to her before looking back down at my World History book. I sighed as I flipped through the pages. I tried to suppress a yawn as I reread the page on the Genghis Khan for the millionth time. “Why are there so many letters…” I muttered to myself. I mentally chided myself for not taking better notes in class. This book made absolutely no sense. What was I even doing in class? I thought for a moment that maybe Taeyeon would have better notes…Oh what am I thinking, all she does is sleep. I glanced up at Taeyeon to see her eyeing the same girl she pointed out earlier. Where the hell did she think she was looking? The erted look on her face was enough to make me disgusted. I kicked her chair, and she lost balance for a second as she flailed her arms around trying to grab the table before she managed to get her chair back on all fours. Damn it, I was hoping she’d fall.

“Oh come on Yuri, relax a little!” she shouted. I groaned. Did she not understand what a library was meant for?

“I should just go ahead and tell Tiffany you were checking out random girls in the library!”

“No! I swear I wasn’t! I’m trying to help you!”

The librarian came over and gave her a warning and told her if she had one more loud outburst she would kick her out. Serves her right for checking out that girl while we’re supposed to be studying. Why did I even bring her along? Maybe I should’ve asked Sunny to come instead.

I couldn’t help but wonder what that girl looked like though…

I shook my head of the thought. I was supposed to be studying! It wasn’t the time to be looking at girls. Then again, I was only curious. I should satisfy my curiosity, right? I decided that a look wouldn’t hurt, so I snuck a glance at the girl.

Wow.

Taeyeon wasn't lying when she said the girl was pretty.

Granted, I could only see the back of her head, but I don’t know, she just had this really pretty aura, you know? Maybe it was just the hair. Yeah, the hair. Her blonde hair was really pretty. Yeah. Her hair.

I blinked and the nice view was replaced with Taeyeon’s grinning face in front of me.

“What?”

I was not in the mood for her snide comments anymore. Actually, I didn’t think I was ever in the mood for those. Her grin got wider and was starting to remind me of the Cheshire Cat. Creepy.

“You were so checking that girl out,” she whispered in an excited tone. I wasn’t checking her out. I was just admiring her hair. It was nice hair. Really, it was.

All of a sudden, all that fills my ears are the restrained, not to mention slightly creepy, giggles from Taeyeon.

“Um, I believe that was you. ert.”

“And what if I was? Does that annoy you? Oh! Are you secretly harboring feelings for your beloved best friend?” That ridiculous Cheshire Cat grin was still glued on her face.

She just made sure that I’m never going to tell her about my short lived crush on her. There’s no way I’m boosting her ego even more.

She didn’t wait for a reply before spouting more nonsense. “But seriously come on, just admit it. You were checking her out.”

“How could I be checking her out? She has her back turned to us!”

“You can still see her legs. I mean, those shorts are pretty short…”

“Shorts are supposed to be short. That’s why they’re called shorts. Otherwise they’d be called longs. Which, you know, just doesn’t sound right.”

“That’s not my point.”

“Then what is your point?”

“My point is, she has pretty nice legs. Don’t tell me you honestly didn’t see that before? What were you looking at then?

“Her hair.”

“…Seriously?”

I shrugged. “Yeah.”

I spared another glance. The more I thought about it, the more she looked familiar. Just by looking at her back, I felt like I had seen her somewhere before. We both shut up as soon as we heard the girl shifting in her seat. I panicked. Did she hear us? We were quiet enough, weren’t we? I felt myself relax as soon as she stopped moving. It looked like she was sleeping anyway. We both let out a sigh of relief. I looked back at Taeyeon and she had that stupid grin plastered back on her face.

She tugged my arm and pulled me out of my chair. “Come on, let’s go see if she has the face to go with that body.”

“W-Wait,” I tried to protest, but she managed to pull me out of my chair with relative ease. She was just stronger than me, that’s all. It’s not like I wanted to see her face or anything. Of course I didn’t. I mean, I had the perfect view of her beautiful blonde hair from behind. We walked around her table and grabbed a random book to make it seem like we were actually trying to work.

Oh my god.

It was then I knew why she had looked to familiar to me, and there was one thing I was sure of.

Her hair definitely looked better from the front.

“She’s in our History class!”

Jung Jessica.

How did I not notice it was her before? The beautiful blonde hair and those legs should’ve given it away. She was the sole reason for my poor note taking in that class. Now it makes sense. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I stare at her in class or anything. It’s her hair. It’s really pretty.

“She is? How come I don’t recognize her?”

“Maybe because you’re always sleeping.”

“Oh right. Well, do you guys talk or anything?”

Does Facebook stalking count? “No.”

“Maybe you should start.” She nudged me with her elbow.

“No, I’ve had enough of this. We should go back to studying. Our test is three days!” I reminded her. I needed to study if I even stood a chance at passing the exam at the end of the week. I couldn’t be distracted by pretty girls, no matter how incredibly stunning they were…I forced myself to turn away from the pretty face to make my way back to our table only to trip and land face first onto an empty cart that was usually full of books. I felt the pain shoot through my head.

I looked up at her only to see his foot sticking out and that Cheshire Cat grin plastered on his face once again. She gave me a thumbs up and dived behind a bookcase to get out of sight. That little shorty. I swear I’m going to –

“Are you okay?”

Oh crap.

I suddenly became mute as soon as I realized that I had woken sleeping beauty up. What do I say? It was the first time I had felt so tongue tied. All I had to do was answer her question, and it wasn’t even a hard question at that, but for some reason it felt like she had suddenly asked me to recite Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet from memory; a feat I was incapable of. I didn’t know why I was freaking out so much; it was just a girl for goodness sakes. I willed myself to look up at her from my position on the ground to find her staring at me with droopy eyes and for a second I was amazed.

Her hair looked even better when her eyes were open.

“Um, hello?”

I mentally forced myself out of my stunned state and reminded myself that I still had yet to answer her question. I swallowed the lump in my throat and forced myself to answer the question.

“Huh? O-oh, I’m f-fine.” I scolded myself silently for stuttering. I stood up and dusted off my clothes, avoiding eye contact with her.

“You dropped your book,” she said as she leaned to pick up the random book I grabbed earlier. I took notice of her voice. It was soft and light. I could listen to it all day. I couldn’t help but imagine what she’d sound like singing with a voice like hers. “Er, here…” I could sense the awkward tone in her beautiful voice. I looked down at the book in her hands.

101 Positions

Oh.

“Th-thanks.” I awkwardly took the book from her hands.

Awkward silence.

Of all the books in this stupid library, I had to grab this one. Now the girl I’ve been secretly admiring from afar, which, by the way, is not stalking, thinks I’m some weird freak.

“Um, did you need something?”

I stopped my inner chiding of my actions and mustered up enough courage to look at her face again. She was now wide awake, and staring at me with questioning eyes. Gosh, she is so beautiful.

I snapped out of my daze when I noticed she was waving a hand in front of my face. “Are you sure you’re okay?” I unconsciously smiled at her actions. There weren’t a lot of people who would be concerned over a stranger, especially one that just got caught with a book. She’s so nice. And pretty. Really pretty…

“Huh? Oh, um, I, uh…you’re pretty.”

I froze when I realized what just came out of my mouth. Did I really just say that? She probably thinks I’m an idiot. I should just walk away. I looked down and swiftly planned my escape. I could feel the heat rushing to my cheeks.

An amused giggle stopped me from moving and I immediately forgot about my plans to hide in a galaxy far, far away. “Thank you.” I looked back up at her to see smiling at me.

Her hair looks even better when she smiles.

She’s smiling, so does that mean she’s enjoying my company? With my newfound confidence, I found myself preparing to spout out whatever else came to mind. Unfortunately, there was one thing on my mind that overpowered all of my other thoughts.

“You’re pretty.”

“You said that already.”

“Oh.”

Whatever confidence I had before disappeared almost immediately.

I noticed she was still smiling. That’s a good thing, right? Smiles are a good thing. Of course they are. Smiles are smiles. I shook my head. People fake smiles all the time. I gulped and started panicking for what felt like the millionth time that day. What should I do? She’s still looking at me. Is there something on my face? Or is she waiting for me to say something? Should I say something else? For reasons beyond my own understanding, I found myself opening my mouth again to talk to the girl. I wasn’t sure why, but I just wanted to stay here with her, even if it meant making a fool out of myself.

“You have nice hair.”

“Uh, thanks?”

“You’re welcome.” I had a feeling that I was going to regret this later…

“And um, nice legs.”

“Excuse me?”

“Y-you have nice legs. T-They’re um, nice and long. And smooth. Or well, they look smooth; I wasn’t touching them while you were asleep or anything. N-not that I was looking at them either! Well I was looking, but not in that way. W-what I’m trying to s-say is that um, they’re nice.”

I was right, I regret it. I felt the heat rise to my cheeks and the blush take over my face.

She raised an eyebrow at me. “Uh, thanks…I think,” she muttered that last part. She turned away from me, the smile gone from her face. I frowned in response. She looked so much prettier when she smiled. Not that she didn’t look pretty now. I mean, she looked pretty damn gorgeous right now.

“You’re bleeding.”

“Huh?”

“Your nose.”

I reached up to touch my nose and brought my hand back down to see traces of blood left on my fingers. Suddenly, the pain in my head from before started to register again as I felt drips of blood coming out of my nose. How did I not notice this before? I glanced back at her to see a concerned look on her face and the throbbing in my head went away. Gosh, she’s like my own personal pain killer.

It finally registered in my head that I probably should do something about my bloody nose. But that would mean walking away from her. If I walk away then the pain will come back. This is for my own personal health! I have to stay here and stare at her. For my health. That’s all it is. I stood rooted in my spot.

“Here,” she said pulling out a wad of tissues from her purse. She tugged on my arm to get me to sit down on the seat next her. I probably looked like an idiot just standing there with a bloody nose staring at her. She probably felt obligated to help someone who looked as clueless as I did.

“Lean your head back,” she instructed. She didn’t wait for me to listen before putting her hand on my forehead and pushing it back so that my view was replaced with the ceiling. I felt her place the tissues on my nose and hold it there. I felt my face flush even more. I didn’t have the will to tell her that you were supposed to lean forward and not back to help stop a nose bleed.

I was starting to feel a little light headed after a minute or so. I’m not sure if it was because her hands were still on my face or if it was all the blood rushing to my head.

“Here, I got it,” I said as I reached to grab the tissues from her hand. I felt this weird tingling in my stomach once I grabbed her hand to take the tissues from it. What is this?

We sat there awkwardly for a couple minutes while I held the bloody tissues against my nose.

“There, all better!” I said happily as I removed the tissues from my nose. I shot her a sheepish grin. “Thanks.”

I looked in front of us to see Taeyeon hiding behind a table spying on us. She gave me two thumbs up when she saw that I noticed her. I mentally groaned. Idiot.

“No problem,” she said with a shy smile. My god, why are you so cute?

I placed the bloody tissues and the book I forgot I was holding onto the table. What do I do now? This is getting really awkwardI struggled to find something to say, anything at all, but everything I said so far has just made me look like an idiot. I stared at the book cover. Why did I have to grab this book? I felt the need to explain myself, but I couldn’t tell her the truth, could I? I mean, could I really just go ahead and say “I just randomly grabbed this book without looking because I was too distracted by your goddess-like beauty?”

Probably not.

But the need to explain that I wasn’t a ert overpowered any other thought that came to mind.

“Er, just so you know, this book isn’t for me.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. It’s for my friend over there,” I said as I pointed to where that idiot was hiding.

“Oh.” She saw both of us looking her way, so she quickly ducked back down. We can still see the top of your head, idiot.

“Yeah, she’s a bit shy, and her and her girlfriend have been having, uh, problems,” I said trying my hardest to keep a straight face. Oh god, what am I saying…

“I see…” There was another moment of awkward silence between us. “I guess you should go and give it to her,” she said suddenly breaking the silence.

“Huh? Oh right. Guess so.” I reluctantly stood up and grabbed the book and threw the tissues into a nearby trash can. Come on Kwon Yuri, walk away. Just walk. How come I can’t move my legs? I felt the need for some type of closure for…whatever it was that just happened. I turned to her and offered another sheepish grin. “Sorry for all the trouble.”

I finally got my legs to move.

“Wait!”

Before I knew it I ended up tripping over the trash can and hit my head on the table. How did that trash can even get there? Wasn’t it over there just a minute ago? I grabbed my forehead in pain as lifted my head a little and saw that idiot grinning at me as she was being pulled out of the library by security. I should’ve known. I’m going to kill her later. That seriously hurt! I should go push her down some stairs, Yeah, that’ll teach her! Being pushed down stairs teaches some pretty important lessons, you know, the main lesson being, don’t mess with me.

I closed my eyes and placed my head back onto the ground. My head still hurt from the first fall. This headache definitely isn’t going away now, is it?

“Are you okay?”

I opened my eyes to see her staring down at me with that concerned look on her face again.

And there goes my headache. Guess she proved me wrong there.

Can I just keep you around all the time? You can be my personal pain reliever.

“Your forehead’s bleeding now.” She helped me stand up and I could feel my head throbbing from the fall. She led me back to the chair I was sitting in and started to clean the small cut on my forehead. She held my head still with one hand and wiped off the blood with the other. The pain was starting to make me dizzy.

Or was it because she was so close to me?

“Your hair smells…” I got distracted by her close proximity before I could finish voicing my thought.

“Uh-”

“Nice! I mean it smells nice!” I said quickly.

“Er, thanks.”

“It really does! It smells like strawberries. You know, I love strawberries. They’re really good. And they smell really good. Just like your hair.” Jeez, I sound like a bumbling idiot. She looked at me with an amused smile. I could only offer her another sheepish grin.

“You’re really accident prone, aren’t you?” she asked smiling at me after placing a band aid on the wound.

“Guess so,” I replied grinning at her.

We looked at each other for a couple seconds before we burst out into laughter. We only stopped when the librarian shushed us. She’s really pretty when she laughs…

“Jung Jessica,” she said finally formally introducing herself with a hand stuck out.

“I know. We have the same History class. Kwon Yuri,” I said grinning and shaking her hand.

“Oh, sorry, I don’t really know a lot of people in that class,” she said with an embarrassed smile. Why are you so cute?

“It’s alright. I sit behind you, so it’s understandable that you didn’t notice me,” I replied. This is so much better than Facebook stalking.

“Next time I’ll make sure to notice you!” she said with a grin. I grinned back at her. There’s that weird feeling in my stomach again.

“Well, I have to go somewhere. It was nice meeting you,” she said standing up. You have to go already? But I just stopped being awkward with you. You can’t leave yet; you’ve yet to witness my non-awkward side!

“Yeah, you too,” I replied reluctantly. Is this really it? I wasn’t really sure what I was feeling at the moment, but there was one thing that I was sure of. I wanted to spend more time with her.

“Try not to fall so much anymore, okay?” she told me giggling. I could only smile.

“Okay. I’ll try.”

“Well, see you around!”

“Yeah, see you,” I told her. Suddenly, I couldn’t wait to go to my World History class. I watched her turn around, but she stopped and turned back to me. What now? Did she forget something? Am I still bleeding?

I watched her hesitate before handing me another tissue she had clenched in her hand. I stared at her cluelessly and she grinned at me before rushing out of the library. I was stunned for a couple seconds.

Is it even possible for someone to be that beautiful?

I looked at the tissue she shoved in my hands and I couldn’t help the grin that appeared on my face as I memorized the set of numbers written on it.
