Chapter 16

Far From Paradise

The second I stepped out of my room the next morning, I tripped over Sungyeol who was sitting on the ground.

He looked up and smiled. “Oh you're up?! Yay!”

“You waited out here for me?”

“Yeah. I didn't want to wake you so I waited. Come on!” he pulled on my hand and led me to his room.

“Wait! I haven't even washed my face or anything yet,” I told him.

He turned back and stared at my face.

“But you look beautiful.”

“But-”

“Aigo! Hurry!” he pushed me towards the bathroom.

Once I walked out, Sungyeol was leaning on the wall with his hands in his pockets, a gesture that I found very attractive.

“All done!” I said with a smile.

“Great! Let's go!” he pulled on my hand again and started running to the living room.

He grabbed our breakfast trays and sat on the couch.

“Okay, so here's the plan...” he started.

“Plan?”

“Yes!”

“What plan?” I raised an eyebrow, a little scared.

“Today is Sungyeol Day!”

“Sungyeol Day?”

He nodded. “We're eating breakfast together, lunch and dinner then we're gonna watch the fireworks together too!”

“But how? It's not like we have any cable or windows.”

He winked. “You'll see.”

Hoya walked in and grinned when he saw me. “Hay babay!” he said in English.

Sungyeol snorted as I chuckled.

“Stick to Korean,” he said.

Hoya glared at him but didn't say anything. That was one thing I loved about Sungyeol. Even if he's being the most annoying person ever, no one can ever dislike him or start a fight. It was impossible with a guy like Sungyeol. He puts my mind at ease a little when I'm around him.

“What are you two up to today?” Hoya asked suspiciously.

“It's Sungyeol Day, so Bomi's gonna spend it with me,” Sungyeol said with a large grin.

Hoya scoffed. “Says who?”

“Muah!”

“But it's New Years Eve. We should all spend it together,” Hoya said.

My eyes widened. “And have everyone in the same room for a long period of time? World War 3 will start. You all can barely make it through dinner.”

“If that's what you want I'm sure we could come to an understanding for one night,” he suggested.

I started to consider it until Sungyeol interrupted my thoughts.

“I object! I asked her first, so she's mine for today. You all can go back to fighting over her later. But for now, it's Sungyeol Day,” he hugged me possessively like a kid would hug his mothers leg.

Hoya just stared at him. “You're not gonna let this go aren't you?”

Sungyeol shook his head. “Mmm mmm.”

“Okay then, good luck Bomi-ah!” Hoya said and left the room with his food.

I looked at Sungyeol and couldn't help but smile. He's the only one to ever succeed in pushing the hot-headed Hoya away without any problems.

When Sungyeol said that it was Sungyeol Day, he really meant it. He refused to leave my side all day. I was starting to get immune to his childishness.

We were in my room playing cards when he suddenly stood up.

“It's almost midnight.”

“We have two hours. Sit down.”

“You know what people do on New Years? Get drunk and have fun. Let's go!” he pulled me up and dragged me down the hall towards his room.

Once we walked in, I looked around. I was surprised at his room. It was actually a lot neater than I thought. I was expecting clothes and random stuff lying around but there wasn't a spec of dust anywhere.

“This is sad...” I whispered.

“What is?”
“Your room is cleaner than mine.”

He laughed. “I'm just an naturally neat person.”

“So, how are we gonna 'get drunk'?” I raised an eyebrow.

He pulled out a bottle from underneath his bed.

“It's not really alcohol...but close enough,” he said and held up the bottle of sparkling cider.

“How'd you get that?!”

“I had to work for it.”

“Hmm...sounds suspicious...”

He grinned. “It's not.”

Sungyeol pulled some glasses from underneath his bed and poured us some of the sparkling cider and we talked about anything.

I was honestly starting to get tired and I laid down on the ground.

Sungyeol laid down and put my head on his stomach as a pillow. He started to my hair.

“Don't fall asleep on me now...I've already gone this far.”

I smiled. “I won't. I'm anticipating what you have in store for me.”

“You're going to love it. I know it.”

I grinned and nodded.

Sungyeol suddenly started to sit up so I rolled over on my stomach and stared at him.

He brought his face close to mine and closed his eyes. My eyes darted around the room in nervousness and I blurted, “We have one minute.”

He stopped and opened his eyes to gaze at me. His expression was so different to what I was used to that I couldn't help but stare back at him. He didn't look childish or immature but serious and manly.

Sungyeol grabbed my hand as we stood up to lead me to the curtains on the other side of the room.

He turned off the lights and opened them and I saw a beautiful view of the city.

“You have windows?!”

He nodded. “They're normally close by a another curtain on the other side but I managed to convince the dude on the monitor to open them just for tonight. You have no idea how many times I had to pester him until he agreed. I pressed that button about 30 times everyday. I guess I annoyed him so much that he even threw in some sparkling cider.”

“Wow, you tried really hard.”

“I wanted tonight to be perfect.”

“Thank you.”

Then we heard the fireworks go off and stared out the window. I was too into the pretty colors of the fireworks that I didn't notice Sungyeol staring at me.

He sighed and I finally snapped out of my trance and looked at him.

“What is it?” I asked.

“At first I didn't really understand why the guys would always fight over you. I just thought they felt obliged to protect you because you're the only girl. It's fun to tease you too because your reactions are cute. I didn't think I'd actually fall for you.”

I was speechless at his confession.

“Happy New Year's Bomi-ah,” he whispered and swiftly wrapped his arm around my waist to kiss me full and hard on the lips.

His lips were incredibly soft and sweet from the cider and I melted into him.

Everything was perfect.

The aura of the night, the sounds of the fireworks, the colors that filled the dark room.

The only thing missing was actual romantic feelings for Sungyeol. He worked so hard to make sure this night was perfect. He deserved at least something in return so I stood there without resisting.

As if he read my thoughts, Sungyeol pulled away and whispered against my lips. “I don't expect you to like me back. I'm sure one of the others have stolen your heart already. But just this once...”

And he kissed me again.

I was confused as to how I was able to control myself around Sungyeol. With the others, I gave in so quickly that it was pathetic. Maybe it had to do with the fact that Sungyeol acted so young compared to me that I only thought of him as a companion. Nothing more.

Or maybe my self control is getting better.

I don't know.

I stood there as I let him kiss me. Since he was getting no response he eventually pulled away and placed his forehead on my shoulder. I felt hot tears seep through my shirt.

“Life isn't fair sometimes,” his voice shook. “I'm always too late.”

“I'm sorry.”

He kissed me one last time and I could feel his emotions in those short seconds.

“Good night,” he whispered.

“Good night Sungyeol.”

I slowly backed away from him and left the room. I closed the door and started to make my way back to my room.

Before I knew it, tears started to fall down my face.

Myungsoo, who was walking back from the bathroom, spotted me and ran over to me with a concerned face.

“Are you okay?” he asked me.

“Why am I hurting so much people?”

He tilted his head in confusion. If I wasn't self-pitying myself, I would've thought it was adorable.

Myungsoo pulled me into his arms and rubbed my back.

I felt that familiar feeling in my stomach and I cried even more.

Sungyeol was right. Life really isn't fair. He's such a great guy and deserved someone to love him. But here I am having the romantic feelings for someone else. Why couldn't these feelings come before? So I could make at least one person happy.

Everyone deserves someone to love them though. It just so happens that the person I love isn't Sungyeol. And that person might be a killer.

We humans are twisted. Terribly twisted.
