Seven

Secrets & Lies

“Han Yeonjoo Han Yeonjoo Han Yeonjoo,” I looked up with a sigh after I heard my name being called countless time. Just like I expected, my noisy friend made her visit, not forgetting to make her entrance noticed. She had this quite excited face which now I enabled to translate as an expression where she wanted to deliver, according to her, hottest gossip.

“I have big news!” she claimed almost immediately after taking the seat behind me without being asked. Just exactly my thought.

“What is it?” I asked her while packing the previous lesson’s books.

She eagerly poked my back and didn’t stop until I turned around. “Do you remember the Oh Taehwan-Kwon Eunhye-Lee Jaehyung news I told you like two weeks ago?”She asked me; after I gave the attention she wanted.

Oh that one. “Yeah I remember. Why? Any updates?” I felt rather curious that time.

“You won’t believe this but Jaehyung confessed to Eunhye!” My mouth gaped in amusement at her information. Love triangle? I never expect a high school relationship could be this complicated. “Eunhye hasn’t responded yet and that makes me curious to death!” she added.

I chuckled in admiration. Is that even possible? I thought that only happen in dramas and movies, where the male lead finally realized he loved the female lead after letting her go and when she was with another man already. I shuddered at the thought. Cliché. I guessed the Lee Jaehyung boy indeed felt abandoned after someone he thought would never stop liking him had turned her back for someone that appreciated her, unlike the unresponsive Jaehyung. Boys will be boys.

“When did he confess to Eunhye?” I asked Gaeun. She went quiet for a while. “Two days ago?” she said lowly in uncertainty. I almost couldn’t hear her as her voice buried with the class’ chatters. “No one knows before Jaehyung went to Eunhye’s class this morning and demanded an answer,” she explained when I just about to ask why the news came so late.

“Eunhye is such a bad girl,” I commented which made Gaeun surprised. Her eyes asked for some enlightenment. “Well, she shouldn’t take that long time just to answer. If she already had Taehwan, she ought not to be hesitant; she should reject Jaehyung right away.”

Gaeun nodded vigorously and mumbled, “You’re right. I thought so…”

“I honestly feel bad for Taehwan. He didn’t-“ Gaeun suddenly stopped and I noticed her changed expression. Her eyes trailed on something behind me that took her attention and she looked flustered. I suddenly realized how the class went quieter and quieter.

I was about to look around at what could possibly cause it when Donghyuk, who sat in the back, shouted, “Hyung! What brings you here?”

Hyung? A senior, I supposed?

I turned around to find Hanbin walked in confidently as he was unaffected by the sudden silence around him. I unconsciously straightened on my seat.

“Hi,” he simply said when he got closer to my desk. Hanbin smiled as if it was normal thing to do. Well, Hanbin smiling wasn’t exactly something out of ordinary but I was referring to his presence in my class. A senior isn’t usually seen around the younger’s buildings, much more inside their class.

“Hi(?)” My answer came out with so much hesitation as I wasn’t sure what should I reply. It’d be less awkward if it was in another place but the fact that he was now standing near my seat was definitely something that couldn’t be ignored. Furthermore, the whole class attention was on us and it was unavoidable.

Gaeun coughed which made me tore my gaze from Hanbin and back to her that I just remembered was there. “So, I guess I’ll see you later Yeonjoo.” She got up and before I could say anything, she bid me a ‘bye’ and dashed out of the room.

Hanbin took the spot where Gaeun left and made himself comfortable. I suddenly felt so nervous. What was he doing here looking for me? Well it wasn’t like I expected too high but if it was for his friends, he would make his way to the back of the class instead of sitting down the seat where Gaeun previously sat, right?

He then turned to his friends and said, “I’m here for her.” Yeah, it confirmed my assumption. The three boys coughed, which I knew they did it purposefully.

Everything was just so uncomfortable. Hanbin appeared out of nowhere and looked relaxed, the class was in abrupt silence, the three boys were enjoying the scene, and I was awkwardly sitting there; being one of the scene’s centers.

Hanbin smiled shortly before turned to everyone else. “Continue whatever you are doing,” he said. Everyone scrambled nervously and continued their business. Hanbin’s words and tone were nothing exceptional but somehow it had peculiar effect on the others.

“Hi,” he repeated his greeting. I only managed to nod. “How was your class so far?” he asked, folding his hands on the table.

I found his question was weird but I replied nevertheless. ”Fine I guess.” I smiled slightly. “What are you doing here?” I asked him since his answer for Donghyuk didn’t satisfy me.

“As I said, I came for you, to see you,” he simply stated. I looked at him attentively and Hanbin only shrugged.

“Really Hanbin? I don’t think it is that necessary to walk all the way here just to see me. It’s unworthy,” I argued. His building and mine weren’t that far but it wasn’t an enough reason for his visit. I’d even doubted it that he ever visited his own friends. Beside I wasn’t that worth for the waste of energy. It’s not like he would feel energized when he sees me or something. Right?

“You sound displeased. Did I interrupt your conversation with that girl?” Hanbin’s expression started to show guilt and sadness. I quickly shook my head. I couldn’t believe he had that thought. I mean, if there was someone to feel guilty, it was me, not him. It was me that for unknown reason made him came.

“That’s not what I mean,” I said regretfully. I opened my mouth, tried to explain but I didn’t know how so I just ended it there. I closed it again with a sigh.

Hanbin chuckled at my behavior. He sent me another smile and said, “I know I know. You don’t need to worry about me. Everything is worthy enough if it is for you.”

Wait, did I hear it right? Did my head trick me into hearing things? My heart reacted and drummed faster than usual almost immediately. I found myself frowned in skepticism at his words. It wasn’t his first time to compliment me and I still had it weird. I used to get compliments from my family and neighbors (when I was a kid) but I wasn’t really used to be complimented by boys.

Seeing my expression, Hanbin broke into smile. Just how many times he smiled this day? He patted my head but said nothing. I tried to interpret his compliment and action but I couldn’t do it without having weird thoughts inside my head. Don’t get me wrong but I couldn’t help but to think his actions showed, somewhat, interest.

“Do you always sit in the front?” he said, with a face showed concern. I mentally scoffed at his ability to change the object in seconds and also naturally; as if his previous words made no impact to the person he was talking with.

I nodded at him. “Of course. I can’t bring myself to expect having the back seat vacant, right?”

Hanbin briefly glanced around. “Don’t you want to swap seat?” he asked again.

“Well, of course. But I won’t do it. I don’t to force the others,” I stated. Hanbin only nodded his heads.

The bell suddenly rang, which made me jumped a bit in surprise. I heard Hanbin sighed as he stood up. “I’ll see you after school Yeonjoo,” he bid his goodbye. I smiled and replied his ‘see you’. Hanbin then left the class, not forgetting to wave and smile at me.

I turned to sit properly on my seat. “Wow, you make Hanbin Sunbaenim come just for you,” I heard someone said. I looked at Jisook who stared at me with amused look in her face. I just shrug my shoulders at her playfully as I took out my book for the next class. I stopped my action abruptly and mouth gaped as realization hit me. Wait, what did he just say? After school?

---

I convinced myself during the rest of the period that I misheard him saying after school. Or even if I didn’t, I believed he didn’t meant what he said. But it turned out that I had no need to get my ears checked since it worked perfectly fine.

“I thought I heard you wrong,” I confessed when I went out of the class and saw him leaning against the wall nearby. Hanbin turned his head and straightened on his feet at the sight of me. Hanbin waited while I walked closer to him and we then walked in together in matched pace.

“You heard me quite all right,” he clarified.

I hugged my recently-borrowed books from the library closed to my chest. “Why are you waiting for me anyway?” I asked in curiosity. I looked up to him and greeted by his side profile.

I never took notice or paid more attention on his appearance but this time I couldn’t help but to admire it. I just realized he had very nice side profile. Every facial features of him amazingly complimented each other well. I admitted that I liked the sight before me. It was a little bit random but I like his nose.

“I want to send you home,” he simply said. I searched for any hint of joke in his face but I found nothing. It seemed he meant the words he said. Ignoring the weird feeling inside me, I just nodded.

We didn’t talk about anything as we walked and exited the gate. Hanbin was quiet and enjoyed himself during the time so I was surprised when he suddenly took two thick biology books from my hands. Wide-eyed, I stared at him in confusion.

“Why are you carrying these?” he asked, rather disapproving me having those in my hands.

“Because I’m the one who need it of course. Why are you taking it? I can manage myself.” I tried to take back the books but Hanbin prevented me to do so. He shook his head. “No. I’ll hold these.”

Hanbin and I stopped our walk to have some arguments but in the end I gave up and let Hanbin carry the books. I was at advantage anyway.

“How are you usually going home?” Hanbin asked. I told him I always ride the bus. He only hummed.

“Let me have those on my lap Hanbin,” I offered again.

When my bus arrived, it was quite full of people inside. Luckily there was one vacant seat and of course it was given for me. Hanbin was standing beside my seat but he insisted to keep holding the books. I suggested better option but he kept on refusing, saying he could manage it. Seeing he was struggling so much with multiple tasks –clutching on my books and keeping himself at balance- I gave him again the offer.

Hanbin hesitated for a moment but he eventually nodded with a sigh. I smiled as I took the books and placed them on top of my lap.

“Are you okay?” I asked him. Hanbin who was looking outside through the bus window diverted his eyes to me. He raised his eyebrow, clearly showing that he didn’t get what I previously said. I repeated again, asking if he was okay and he only tugged one corner of his lips into smile in assurance. I had occasionally glanced at him during the ride and he looked uncomfortable but Hanbin didn’t complain.

I heard him threw relieved sigh after I told him we almost reached my stop. When we finally got out from the bus, Habin breathed deeply; it was so deep as if he finally able to inhale oxygen after hours of holding breath.

“How can you survive it?” he inquired; a slight amusement tone I could notice in his voice.

I shrugged my shoulders at him. “It isn’t usually full like that,” I replied.

Hanbin took again the books from my hand and held it close to his chest. I just chuckled lightly before walking to home with Hanbin trailing beside me.

“Are you free tomorrow, Yeonjoo?” Hanbin suddenly asked. I thought about it for a moment. Tomorrow was Saturday so I supposed I had nothing to do. But then I remembered my intention on borrowing the biology books which was because I was going to work on my biology essay this Saturday night.

Getting no response, Hanbin pointed out, “Don’t tell me you’re going to do homework again.”

I swiftly turned to him and grinned. He had guessed it right. Hanbin rolled his eyes in annoyance and scoffed; knowing his assumption was true. “This?” he asked again; eyes pointing to the book. I shortly nodded.

“Come on Yeonjoo… Forget the homework and let’s just go out tomorrow,” Hanbin suggested. I hastily stopped on my path as I tried to digest his words. Let’s go out? Wasn’t it a little bit ambiguous?

Flustered, Hanbin quickly clarified before I had weird idea but too bad, I was already having that idea. “With the boys I mean. Let’s hang out together,” he smiled. I mentally scolded myself for letting funny thoughts inside my mind. Of course he meant to hang out with the others.

I really wondered why I kept on assuming things when it comes to Hanbin. I wasn’t sure whether his actions were all pure in friendliness or it was something else. Strangely, the ‘something else’ had bigger power that it keeps on dominating my brain. I didn’t really have many friends in my previous years of school so I didn’t really know how I should respond on this boys-related subject.

“Why? Did you think I was asking you to date?” he playfully said which was not playful at all to me. Hanbin nudged me on my arm repeatedly. I could feel my cheeks heated in embarrassment but I tried to act cool.

I was about to told him that I didn’t think that way but thankfully the sight of my house saved me so I decided to say nothing.

“We’re here,” I announced, making my pace slower and eventually came to a stop. Hanbin mirrored my action and stared at the building in front of him.

Wordlessly, I took the books from him. Hanbin looked surprised but then he regained himself and helped me to hold the book properly. After that Hanbin just took few steps back and stood there. I looked at Hanbin but he only stared at me in return. I frowned, “Why aren’t you going? You can go now,” I informed.

“I need to see you go in first,” he reasoned. I gave him a disbelief look. “Because I need to know you arrived at home safely,” he explained when I almost asked why.

Since I guessed there was no point in arguing with Hanbin, I decided to do as he wanted. Sighing, I opened the gate and walked inside. I stopped for a moment right before the door and turned around to see if he was going but Hanbin was still standing there. He smiled and motioned me to go with his hand. I shook my head slightly but went in nevertheless. I waved to Hanbin before I closed the door and he waved back with the smile never left his face.

I opened the curtain to take a peek and finally I saw Hanbin walked away; hands stuffed inside his pocket.

A smile crept on to my face as I watched him leaving. I could safely say Hanbin is really a good person. He may appear cold but he is actually warm and nice. Too bad people are being so harsh and judged him right away only from what they see on the outer shell. But that’s how people work right? They don’t bother to look deeper and satisfied just with brief glance.

“Was it Hanbin that send you home?” A sudden voice interrupted my thoughts and I jumped in shock. I turned and found Nayeon waiting an answer for her question in expectancy.

I nodded at her and her expression turned sour, obviously she disliked it. Nayeon just shrugged before turned and walked back; mumbling something around why I didn’t listen to her.
