Fifteen

Secrets & Lies

It was Saturday night, the night I was supposed to go out with Seungyoon. 7.43 p.m and I was done in getting ready. Seungyoon told me that he would pick me up at 8 which were 17 minutes to go. Seungyoon had specifically asked me to wear something comfortable. I opted for jeans and sweater since it was a little bit chiller than usual.

I sat on the edge of my bed, was scrolling through my Instagram to kill the time when suddenly the door of my room burst opened. My head looked up to see who the criminal was and it was Seungyoon, dressed in a checkered shirt, jeans, and black leather jacket. I’d never seen him in leather jacket before, nor I ever thought he had one. But that besides my point.

“Why are you barging in my room like that?” I asked in rising tone.

Seungyoon rubbed the back of his neck as he smiled sheepishly. “Sorry,” he muttered with no apologetic tone at all.

“I might have in the middle of changing my clothes, you know,” I pointed out. He insisted that he already apologized which I shook my head at him.

“Ready to go?” he asked.

“Of course. I already waited for ages,” I retorted to him.

Seungyoon chuckled and moved aside from the door frame to let me pass through and closed the door behind him. We together went downstairs and met Nayeon in the couch with Dad, watching television while doing some father-daughter bonding time.

“Where are you going Yeonjoo?” Nayeon asked quickly right after she saw me.

“I need her to accompany me buying gift for a friend. I hope you don’t mind, Uncle,” Seungyoon said smoothly to my father. Every lie that comes through is considered as truth. No doubt would be given from my father. He believed everything.

My father nodded his head as I expected. Nayeon also nodded her head with a small smile. I returned her smile and went to the front door with Seungyoon behind me.

After he closed the door, he immediately said, “Sorry for the lie to your father.”

I shook my head at him. “He is the one you were lying to. Why are you apologizing to me?” I asked him in teasing manner, hoping it’d make him feel guilty. He only shrugged nonchalantly.

I scoffed at his ignorant response, “Of course. You lied to him too much that you aren’t guilty anymore.”

He chuckled this time. “You talk to much, Baby. Let’s just get going,” he said as he handed me a helmet.

He wore his and proceeded on his motorcycle. I hopped on after him. Unlike the usual girls who wraps their hands on the male’s waist as soon as she went up to the motorcycle, I put my hands on the vacant spot between us instead. My gesture got questioned by Seungyoon.

“Are you sure you don’t want to hold me?” I laughed at his inquiry. It sounded vague.

I shook my head at him, forgetting the fact that he couldn’t see me. “No,” I confirmed.

“And if I go with high speed?” He asked again, trying to break my certainty.

“And if you go with high speed, I would just pull your jacket and slap you in the back so that you go back to normal speed and so that I won’t be damaged, Oppa,” I replied which caused a laugh to escape from his lips.

I didn’t understand where the funny part was because I was saying things very seriously.

“Okay okay. Oppa got it,” he cheerfully said.

After that he drove both of us to the mysterious destination only known by him. At first, we went past the city, leaving the colorful lights and busy people behind. He then brought us to the highway.

Questions clouded in my mind. Where were we going? I hadn’t any slightest idea about what Seungyoon was planning. Although I was confident that he wouldn’t hurt me in any ways, but I still couldn’t bring comfort to myself knowing that we moved far away from the crowd.

I tugged at the end of Seungyoon’s leather jacket nervously. Seungyoon could feel the uneasiness in me. He held my hand on his for a moment before giving it reassuring pat; his way to ask me to trust him. I drew back my hand. Right. It wasn’t like I only knew Seungyoon for days. I’ve known him for years and despite his craziness, he would still protect me.

The trip went on and on. It only got more and more unfamiliar. It was road that I never crossed before. Maybe I didn’t even know it existed. It was really quiet, only the sound of Seungyoon’s vehicle that could be heard. And crickets. Yeah, and crickets.

In the darkness with only the moon as the source of the light, I could make a faint shape that was similar to a bridge around 200 meters in front of us. There were lights there and I heard people?

For the first time in my life, I doubted Seungyoon’s protectiveness. I thought he brought me to a place that obviously could hurt me.

The closer we got to the bridge, the louder I heard the sound of people cheering. Was it underground party? Or worse, some drug party? I couldn’t stop my heart from beating so fast. I was nervous and afraid. Seungyoon suddenly became unbelievable. I couldn’t put my trust to him anymore. As we got nearer and closer, I also heard the sound of vehicles, engines being . The cheers got louder and I could see people under the bridge with few lights.

My heart was about to explode the moment Seungyoon brought us exiting the darkness, exposed to the light under the bridge. My view became clear in front of me. There were a lot of motorcycles; all in different kinds, color and interesting shapes.

At the other end of the bridge, stood four motorcycles ready to be driven with their respective owners on top of them. A man in the middle had a small white flag as he waved it left and right.
The drivers geared up their vehicles. Cheers went on louder.

The man then waved the flag down after his fingers counted silently from three to one. At the wave of the flag, all four motorcycles rocketed with a very high speed leaving the place. People around yelled happily as they began to fill up the main road to see the unseen four motors and its owners.

I hopped off the motorcycle with slightly agape mouth. Illegal racing? Was this the ‘adrenaline pumps’ that Seungyoon had promised me before? Racing? Oh my God.. My head felt like spinning. Why on earth Seungyoon brought me here? I looked at my cousin who also cheered and clapped at the leaving contestants. I glanced at him in displeased look. Seungyoon turned to face me and shrugged his shoulder with a smirk.

“Illegal racing?” I straightforwardly asked Seungyoon. I was hoping that he would say no but the answer was exact opposite. Seungyoon shook his head with an amused smile, probably at my mixed expression.

Seungyoon didn’t say anything until I heard the sounds of vehicles coming near. I guess it was the four contestants. Four lights were moving together. I couldn’t figure out who had the lead because they all seemed to drive equally fast. The people cheering got louder as names of their favorites being yelled.

The previous man in the middle got to his position along with the white flag. Seconds after, a  motorcycle pulled up and went past the man; the first person to finish the race. A group of people circled him as they enchanted his name along with happy cheers. Before the man could take off his helmet, people already started to gtab his hands and gave hin handshakes.

Seungyoon pumped his fist in the air, shouting a loud ‘wow’ as he ran towards the driver. He made himself some space through the crowd and hugged the winner in a cool manner.

“Just as I expected,” he commented.

Upon finally having break drom other people, the driver took of his helmet and looked to Seungyoon wih a foolish goofy grin. “I won right?” he asked in which Seungyoon nodded.

The man hopped off his motorcycle as more people came for a handshake. I looked at the scene from afar. Seungyoon seemed to forget my existence. Among the people around him, I saw the familiar middle-schooler-boy-who-offered-me-alcohol, Jinwoo. I gueesed the winner of today’s race was Seungyoon’s friend.

The driver suddenly took notice of me and nudged at Seungyoon. From his eyes, I guessed he was silently asking about who I was. Seungyoon turned his head and laughed after. Maybe he realized that he had forgotten me there.

“Right! This is my cousin, Yeonjoo,” he introduced me briefly.

I smiled and bowed politely to him. He nodded and stretched out his hand. “I’m Song Mino,” he said. I took his hand as I told him my name.

“Where’s Seunghoon?” Seungyoon suddenly asked. He looked to left and right but the said boy wasn’t there. Mino responded with shrugs of his shoulders and with that Seungyoon went off saying thay he’d be gone to look for Seunghoon.

“You two, talk,” he shortly commanded to both of us, leaving me alone in awkward situation with a man who was a complete stranger to me.

“Let’s go there,” he suggested, pointing to a quieter area as he led our way. There was a bench and I decided to sit as Mino followed beside me. None of us said a word that I then chose to speak up.

“You like racing?” I asked him and Mino nodded his head. I scrunched up my eyebrows, “But it is illegal and dangerous”, I commented. The race was obviously against the kaw and amateur. They weren’t protected by the law and it was very possible option for causing death.

“I’m a man, those facts don’t scare me,” he replied nonchalantly. My mind disagreed tochis idea. A man isn’t judged by his bravery to do something illegal. The thing that made me worry was that the race was dangerous.

“Why?” I asked him again. “I just like the feeling.” He said, smiling.

Then he suddenly turned to me. “I’ll give you a ride. Come on,” he stood up and offered his hand to me.
I looked at him, flabbergasted.

My eyes went back and forth drom his convincing eyes and his outstretched hand. Should I take it? My innner self was telling me to take it. But my sane self refused. Again, it was dangerous and I just had known thia man for like fifteen minutes. Letting him to take me for a ride could lead me into a trouble. But then again, he was Seungyoon’s friend. I trusted Seungyoon and so this man should’ve earned my trust as well.

Enchanting to myself that it was fine, I took his hand and stood up. Mino then led me to his motorcycle where it was still in crowd of people. He shushed everyone there and took a random helmet to be given to me. I took it rather skeptically but still grateful.

He hopped in and I followed right after. He then started off and brought me out of the under the bridge.

The gust of wind hit my face and I smiled in relaxation. I enjoyed the coldness in my cheeks. Minoo started slowly before he was speeding up and kept speeding up. I clutched on his jacket tightly as the velocity went higher than I could tolerated. If it was Seungyoon, I would slap him and pinched his back. But obviously, I couldn’t do that to Mino.

My grip just went tighter and tighter. I faintly heard Mino chuckled as he slowed down.

“Hold me tight, I’m going to bring you to the next level,” was what Mino said. Before I could understand and define his sentences, he went for a high full speed.

I threw my hands around his waist as I put all my life in him. Mino chuckled again and I didn’t know, I thought I misheard him, but somehow I was quite sure he said, “Finally," which I didn't understand.
